Nosy thread this morning: I’m curious whether the conversations that grip the parent threads I’m on are echoed in yours. On my end, I’ve seen a lot of chatter the past few months about tin can phones, travel sports (strong opinions pro and con), and sleep-away camps (again, strong opinions — mainly about what age, how much of the summer, whether to do single-gender, and how we feel about separating from our kids!). I’ve also had an absolute ton of one-off conversations about whether we’ve nailed the formula for keeping our kids busy enough during the summer without forgetting that they are, in fact, kids, and deserve the downtime and backyard dirt and popsicles on the porch, too. (Consensus: it’s all right-sizing. Some summers are too lean on activity, and we pay for it as parents, and others too busy, and we pay for that as parents, too. One irksome truth that seems to be coalescing from these conversations: the answer will change as your kids get older. For example, we’re already feeling like my daughter may have outgrown day camp and are contemplating a different mix for her — but not for our son, who is still very much age appropriate for the day camp model — next summer. For our girl, this will probably look like dedicated athletic camps for the sports she loves mixed in with a lot of pool/swim. At our pool, kids can be left unchaperoned after they’ve completed a course that ensures they know all the rules — I think kids are eligible to take the course at the age of nine. Anyway. Right-sizing. It’s a big summer task each year, and I think all of us feel it.)
What about you? What are the topics that are blowing up your mom group chats? And what’s the best morsel of information you’ve gotten from them? (Mine are mainly of the logistical variety — the best place to get a component of the uniform, reminders to enroll in various programs on time.)
Post-Scripts.
