Jen’s Weekend Drafts: The Darcy Hand Flex + 90s Meg Ryan Vibes.

By: Jen Shoop

+MEN ATTEMPT TO RECREATE THE MR. DARCY HAND FLEX: Who did it best? I loved the comments section on this post, especially: “2 has watched that movie a few times.” LOL. The type of internet content we need and deserve.

+TORY BURCH PARIS APARTMENT TOUR: My sister was raving about this tour of Tory Burch’s spectacular Paris apartment — watching Tory in her pleated khakis partly informed her declaration that she would be channeling in recreating “90s Meg Ryan vibes” in her wardrobe this summer. I fully endorse the look. I couldn’t find the exact pair she’s wearing in the video (though she is wearing this gorgeous cardigan from her own collection), but found similar takes on this throwback look at Reformation, Vince, Veronica Beard, and Toteme. I ordered these Everlanes to channel the vibe.

+CARO CLAIRE BURKE ON YESTERYEAR: My sister and I compared notes on Yesteryear when she visited last weekend; she loved it, praised it deeply, couldn’t understand my circumspection about it. It made me revisit my review on the book. Has your opinion of it changed at all, with a little more distance in the rear view mirror? I found this recent interview with the Burke in The New Yorker fascinating, especially her perspective that the book is not actually about tradwives. Read her quote below — what do you think?

+THE BLIGHT OF THE LIGHTING AT THE HAIR SALON: Oh my gosh. Remember how I mentioned salon lighting in my list of “things I find NOT chic“? This video drives the point home. LOL.

+LED MASK LOVE: Just totally hooked on this mask. I notice such a big difference when I’m consistent with its use. I love the ritual my husband and I have going this summer: I’ll get up, wash my face, and put on the mask while I check emails in the morning, before the kids are stirring. Then I hand off the mask to him and he takes a turn. This is being married in your 40s. Anyway, we both notice improvements in the overall clarity/tone of our skin as well as decreased wrinkles around the eye area. This was one of the three keys to great skin in your 40s, per my aesthetician: retinol, exfoliation, and an LED mask. You can use code JEN10 for a discount. BTW, several of you asked for the aesthetician’s information — I’m sharing a photo of her card below. She works at the Ritz spa in Tyson’s!

+BARBARA KINGSOLVER’S LOVE LETTER: Meep, thought this post by Barbara Kingsolver about her husband so sweet: “Never once has he complained about getting called “Mr. Kingsolver” — he says it gets him into more interesting places than being called “Dr. Hopp” ever does. It’s only by wildest coincidence that we met in the first place. I thank my lucky stars every day, but especially on this one.”

+STYLING NOTE FOR THE CADETS PANTS WE’RE LOVING: A lot of us ordered these pants this week (they keep selling out, but there are planned restocks in September and a couple of colors left in select sizes — note that you have to scroll down through the kids sizes to see the adult sizes). I loved the styling inspo in this reel of pairing them with a rollneck cardigan? So cute! My top picks for rollneck cardis to pair with these pants:

+WEEKEND FINDS:

+Swooning over this gorgeous cashmere fair isle cardigan. It reminds me of a style Celine had a few seasons ago. SWOON.

+My mom and I both ordered this CHIC trio clutch (more Celine vibes)! Note that you have to buy the strap separately if you want to style as a crossbody.

+Aurate has such pretty everyday jewelry pieces, and they’ve extended my 20% off code — use JENSHOOP. I love this “connection” necklace — I gave one to my SIL a few years ago because she lives so far away (in Norway!). I also adore this “story” necklace where you can have anything engraved on it. I scanned in my son’s first attempts at writing my name and love to wear it around my neck. One of my girlfriends honored her recently-passed mother by having one of the necklaces engraved with her mom’s handwriting. I can hardly type that sentence without tearing up.

+My son has been really interested in spotting mushrooms when we’re taking our nature walks — when we were in Norway, he and my SIL looked through a big mushroom encyclopedia the owners had left at their cabin. We just checked out all the books on mushrooms at our local library and I might get him this one as a back to school gift.

+The chicest iteration on boat shoes I’ve seen this season.

+Thinking ahead to fall hygge: treat yourself to one of these fantastic electric kettles for brewing perfect cups of tea all season long. Extremely well designed and so chic.

+Khaki is having such a moment right now, between the aforementioned pleated khaki craze and then a great new colorway in my favorite running shorts and the matching athletic jacket. (Use code SHOOP20).

+Cool sneakers, significantly discounted!
