Things I Find Randomly Unchic.

By: Jen Shoop

A cheeky one today — the inverse of my chic things lists — but I just thought it was such a funny prompt. What do we find deeply unfashionable?

The curtains on Amtrak trains (is this the best we can do?);

Long, multi-page menus;

What humidity and light rain does to my hair;

When people don’t acknowledge busboys/runners, especially when they are holding hot plates and trying to figure out who ordered what;

Costco-sized condiment bottles — I get the utility but the volume is so off-putting;

The smell of industrial strength cleaner wafting out of bars in Midtown Manhattan;

“Upgrade to pro” in my child’s rec league sports app;

Talking over people;

Comic sans or Wingdings fonts, used unironically;

All of the alarm sounds on the iPhone;

Baby carrots;

Talking on speaker phone in public;

Anything “in a cream sauce” on an airplane, yikes;

Kidzbop (the name, the instrumentation, the terrible covers, ahhhhh!);

Movie theater carpets in America;

That ad at the AMC theaters about their cutting edge image quality…was it written by a motorcycle?!;

Standing in line for almost anything but especially to get into a buzzy restaurant;

Taking yourself too seriously;

Liquid Death water (??);

Shaming other people’s reading preferences;

1-ply toilet paper;

Passive aggressive signs (“please ring bell ONCE before…”);

Corporate lunch boxes — I can just picture the sad, stale cookie in its cello sleeve;

My ultra-thin eyebrows in 2001;

Bad lighting at a salon (have you ever looked at yourself in a mirror while getting your haircut and been astonished at your ugliness?);

Social insularity

What would you add?

Post-Scripts.

+Things I find randomly chic: home and summer editions.

+Songs for summer.

+My Grub-Street-style food diary.

Shopping Break.

+The popular Bessette button-down in a crisp stripe!

+A perfect, versatile LBD.

+YES to this ringer tank (more sizes here and here). I own this similar style from PerfectWhiteTee (this one is a tiny bit cropped/sheer, FYI). CUTE with our Rhoback shorts!

+These French hair pins are insanely chic. Going to watch a bunch of tutorials to figure out how to do it — but this is going to be my new fall hair accessory.

+Restock of the bestselling Dune shorts.

+Ulla’s new arrivals are just perfect, but especially this blouse (wear now and straight into fall — love that ribbon detail at the collar)! And this dress is a 10/10.

+A chicer alt to leggings this fall.

+Magpie guest room best seller.

+The sweetest tile-print dress. I love this silhouette!

+Love the silhouette of these Agoldes. But for something a tad more classic: these are probably my most-worn everyday jeans. The fit is elite. A Magpie called these “the sister of the traveling pants” jeans because they work well on so many different body types, heights, etc!

+Updated my Shopbop hearts!

+Love these running shorts.

+A red dress to wear to everything on your calendar — late summer BBQ, back to school event with a little cardi or denim jacket, date night.

+CUTE blockprint skorts for girls.

+Easy striped lounge pants. I love the idea of these with a big white button-down.

+Closed for August hat. I can’t explain its appeal but I love this.

Also hate when people shame other people’s music/movie/TV preferences.

I laughed more than I expected. Movie theatre carpets, iPhone alarms and those giant condiment bottles are oddly accurate. Thanks for the fun read!

Hard Agree with all of these! I also find judgmental attitudes very unchic. Also, always being on your phone and getting all your news, and opinions from your bubble of social media! Sadly, on my hair, any hair accessories including the beautiful French hair pins end up looking deeply unchic and boy have I tried.. And, my son came back from a haircut last week with a semi-normal looking hair from the front, but the back was a kind of poofy mullet! So unchic, but funny after another place fixed it. I thought his hairstylist had just had a very bad day until I noticed quite a few modified mullets being sported around our area. I guess we shall see if the poofy back mullet will replace broccoli hair in the cohort!

Unchic: using generative AI to do anything at all. I would rather see all your human foibles. The lack of confidence to hand over your one wild precious life to a model doing it so badly.
Looking at your phone while walking, ditto using AirPods on a city street. Watching TikTok or instagram out loud in public. Isolation rather than connection.
Bottled water.
Men wearing flip flops.
Talking about what supplements you’re taking, or your special diet. Deeply unchic. And I’m gluten free so I’m sometimes guilty of this!
Restaurants with beautiful front of house and dirty bathrooms. I don’t think this about a complete dive with a grungy bathroom–there’s something about falseness that bothers me.
“Home theaters.”
The moment in my cycle when suddenly I realize I have a faint mustache. Eek!
Wastefulness.
