The Best Everyday Sweaters.

By: Jen Shoop

I love a statement sweater, but the value of a classic knit in a solid or stripe that you can reach for week in, week out, for seasons on end, cannot be overstated.

Some of my favorite investment sweaters hail from Goop’s house label, formerly known as “G. Label,” now styled as “Gwyn.” I find them to be elegant and timeless — wardrobe workhorses. You can tell that someone put thought and care into the details — the belted styles have the perfect length of belt; the overlong ribbing on hems and cuffs are thoughtful; the button placement intentionally sexy. I specifically love her slim belted cardigan, which can be wore with belt or sans and have a over-long, dramatic cuff. I love the lean lines and luxe but casual vibe; I own in two colors. This year’s Gwyn addition has been these oversized, cozy Tatum style (seen below). Per usual, every detail is so gorgeous: over-long, knuckle-grazing cuffs that feel just right for wrapping around a cup of afternoon tea; delicate pointelle detailing along the sides; a gorgeous ribbed collar.

From her most recent collection, I love the look of this ribbed cardigan and this iconic cableknit. (Use code SHOOP15 for 15% off all of Goop’s house labels, including their beauty!)

At the slightly little less spendy tier, I have slowly acquired a number of La Ligne’s Marin and Mini Marin sweaters (striped and solid). These are the plushest, thickest, coziest sweaters in the best colors. I love the exaggerated collar width and the proportions of the Mini Marin are just perfect — cropped enough to style with a fuller-silhouette pair of jeans (like a barrel or wide leg) but not so cropped you are revealing midriff. (Use code MAGPIE10.)

Also in this tier: Alice Walk (this is probably the most-worn knit in my closet — it is unbelievably soft, not a hint of scratchiness, can be worn directly on skin, and I love to layer over a pointelle or cotton tee) and Jenni Kayne, a Magpie reader favorite for years on end. So many of you love their iconic cashmere fisherman and Cooper cardigan. One of my beloved neighbors is very much a Jenni Kayne gal, and every time I see her in one of her simple but luxe cashmere sweaters, barefoot, with loose-flowing blond hair, I think: “I want to be her!” She’s very much living the ethos of the Maine-woman-in-the-summer archetype I’ve written about a few times.

A little more reasonable (around $200): this gray Henry button-up by Tuckernuck and this gray knot button cashmere (in my closet), also by Tuckernuck; try code YOUROCK or YOURULE for 20% off. And of course J. Crew is a fantastic destination for classic knits: I just snagged this perfect cashmere cable-knit sweater in chocolate. Finally, I have a few great pieces from Everlane, and am currently eyeing this fabulous cardigan.

Last but not least, in the incredible steal category: Quince everything! They have fantastic looks-for-less for several of the brands I’ve mentioned above: this (runs TTS) and this (go up a size for a slouchier look) remind me of Jenni-Kayne; meanwhile, I love the look of this cableknit and this crewneck.

Everyday Fall Sweaters Style Inspo.

First, some styling inspo from Pinterest. Don’t these chic peas put some wind in your getting dressed sails?! They make the simplest formulas look so impossibly chic! Some of the styling notes I appreciate the most from these collages:

+Layering neutrals — whites, creams, taupes!

+Using a sweater as an accessory (wearing like a scarf over the top of a trench or around shoulders);

+The bandana print scarf to add strong contrast!
