Jen’s Weekend Drafts: The Romance of Letter Writing.

By: Jen Shoop

+THE ROMANCE OF LETTER WRITING: I loved this little musing — letters are magic! The intimacy, the hand-work of them! I actually received the most gorgeous hand-written letter from a Magpie who said she was inspired by The Correspondent to write more letters. A little nudge (for myself) to drop something in the mail this week…

+HOW TO GROW OLD: By Sandra Cisneros, as seen in The New Yorker:

+WHERE YOU’RE STANDING: I write a lot about this theme (being kind to younger versions of yourself, celebrating the micro-wins, gratitude for the normal day), but this still stopped me in my tracks:

+A FILM ADAPTATION OF THE GOD OF THE WOODS: All the details here. I love the casting of Alice Van Laar! If you’ve not yet read this book, it’s a great, gripping summer read (literary mystery).

+THE WRONG SHOE THEORY: Have you heard about this? The idea is that you look much fresher / more modern when you pair the unexpected shoe with the outfit. So instead of reaching for a sandal, you wear a sneaker, or instead of a polished flat, you slip into some boat shoes. I practiced this theory this week, styling breezy boxer style shorts with my favorite ballet flats (almost sold out in my denim, but tons of other colors — I’d strongly rec the butter yellow for summer). Honestly, I do prefer these slightly to Margaux because I prefer the elongated toe box — it’s more flattering on my very small feet / petite legs! I feel like it elongates the leg. I just discovered that A. Soliani is running a truly private sale here (use code SUMMER20 for a rare 20% off). Sizing is really limited but I LOVE these perforated blue Comos (same silhouette as mine but with the strap) and any of their denim pieces — this (Chanel vibes), this.

+NAUTICAL KNITWEAR SUMMER: Please join us in this whimsical trend! I hate to say it, but I kind of think that The Great sailboat sweater is worth it. I’ve been throwing it on over everything from breezy white dresses to airy shorts to gingham statement pieces and I feel like it’s going to be one of those “wardrobe icons” I pull out year after year that my kids will remember when they get older. It’s just so charming and perfectly proportioned. The one from Marea that launched a week ago sold out SO QUICKLY but they’ve brought it back for pre-order if you’re interested. Meanwhile, a Magpie reader alerted me to this Michigan-based small business that offers a similar style. And one of my girlfriends has this under-$200 style and it’s super cute as well. A full round-up of options at all price points here!

+BESTSELLERS: These “cool mom” shorts continue to be wildly popular in our community. The hype is warranted! These are insanely comfortable and lightweight — almost like wearing nothing at all. Great for peak summer heat, Saturday errands, etc! I consider these more of an athleisure/bopping around short versus true running short, as they aren’t lined and are very brief — FYI!

I’m in the middle of reading The God of the Woods right now! So good. I was disappointed by my original summer reading pick (Mansion Beach) but this book has me back in the groove. My audio picks right now are The Diary of a Provincial Lady (very entertaining) and Secrets at Sea (for driving with the kids – so sweet).
