Jen’s Weekend Drafts: Hotel Bucket Lists + Success.

By: Jen Shoop

+HOTEL BUCKET LIST: Do you keep a hotel bucket list? I’m inspired by my friend Meghan’s list here and just started doing this over the past few days. (I’ve been using Google Maps more intentionally with this London/Norway trip on the horizon — adding lots of “markers” / “tags” for restaurants and activities I want to visit so that they’re easy to see at a map glance view.) So I am keeping track of hotels I’ve heard of in the same way, even if I have no immediate intentions of traveling — will be a really helpful future starting point!. The first one I added: Casa Bonavita in Malta. I mean WOW. A hotel in an old castle!

Also, if you do keep a list, what are your top three wishlist hotels?

+TRAVEL ROLES: Speaking of travel, this video hit a litttttle close to home — lol. Poor Landon! I just show up at the airport and everything else has been taken care of…

+ON SUCCESS: Landon sent me this video of an inspiring coach talking about competing, self-improvement, and success. The mantra of solely focusing on doing a better job today than I did yesterday is galvanizing and in a weird way liberating for me. I don’t need some long and complex road map. I just need tiny, iterative improvements and willpower. (Reminder: the only thing between me and my goals is effort!) I’m also planning to pocket some of these sentiments when reassuring my daughter, who is competing on a swim team and will be leveling up in her soccer playing in the fall. Not being an athlete myself, I never quite know what to say besides “you did your best; I’m proud of you for that” but now I have a couple of other ideas up my sleeve.

+MORE ON SUCCESS: Talking about success always reminds me of that quote on success from Emerson. My favorite bit is: “Success is to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate beauty and find the best in others.” True, true, true, true, true!

+AUDIOBOOKS FOR SUMMER: I’m currently listening to The Calamity Club on the rec of dozens of Magpies! More great audiobooks in the comments section here. I always ask people when they listen to audiobooks and a lot of you tune in while doing dishes, folding laundry, and doing your makeup. I’ve begun to follow suit. A really nice experience when your hands are busy! Wanted to mention that Audible is offering a special deal for Prime members this weekend — 3 months free plus a $20 credit. That works out to four free audiobooks. A good little on-ramp to your summer listening. I’m thinking I will download the Emma Lyon series (top top Magpie reader rec as a summer book series) for my trip to London and listen while on the plane/in transit!

+BTCHY FRENCH: This account is incredible. I’m picking up all kinds of gems for whenever I need to impress my French speaking friends (which is never, lol). My favorite is — instead of “turn out the light” >> “ce n’est pas Versailles ici” (“it’s not Versailles here”). LOL.

+WEEKEND SHOPPING:

FOURTH OF JULY SHOPPING

LA LIGNE COLBY PANTS // FAHERTY SHORTS (SELLING FAST) // FREDA FLATS ON SALE // LOW-DOSE RETINOL // STRIPED SHIRTDRESS // RESTOCK ON THE VIRAL DONNI TAFFETA PANT // FANCY EUROPEAN SOAP (ON SALE) // BEST NOTEBOOKS (25% OFF)

+Coolest pants restocked! Trust me, you’ll love the way these look, and they’re basically never in stock. I like all the ginghams, but think the espresso pair will work well into fall (pair now with a tank, pair later with a button-down and even later with a chunky crewneck).

+An extra 50% off sale at J. Crew this weekend — don’t miss fab striped dresses like this and this. Upgrade pick: this stunning ME+EM.

+Ordered these classic Colbys in the linen navy. Use code MAGPIE10.

+Freda Salvador is running a summer sale this weekend, with up to 40% off our favorite woven flats (go with a bold color!) and fisherman sandals.

+I spoke with my dermatologist about retinol when I went in for my routine skin check (just a lil big sis reminder to schedule your annual check-ups!), and mentioned that differin had been horribly drying on my skin when I tried it a few years ago. She recommended starting with a low dose retinol — so I’m going to give this 0.2% one a try, starting with every few nights and seeing how my skin reacts. If it works well, she said I can gradually go up to higher percentages (they also have an 0.5% and 1%) and then maybe graduate to a retinoid. She also specifically said not to use on the nights I’m exfoliating with these!

+Speaking of: 25% off a selection of great beauty brands at Blue Mercury. I ordered some of these powerglow peel pads (rec’d by my aesthetician at a recent facial and seconded by several Magpies). I was JUST mentioning that I think Claus Porto soap is a major chic summer thing, and you can get a gift box of their soaps or this pretty soap on a rope on sale too. All my Blue Merc sale picks here!

+25% off my longtime favorite notebooks. I just ordered a couple of these – they are my favorite little gift for a fellow creative. I gave them to most of my interlocutors / podcast interviewers on my book tour!

+New in at Faherty: fun patterned shorts. Pair with a scoopneck tank (reminder – this is 20% off with code PRIVATE20).

+Weekend sale at Ole Henriksen — you might consider this vitamin c packed primer. Not on sale but a good little value bundle: the cleanser I just ordered with their famous lip product.

+On a little bit of a high because I found a pair of these Prada mesh ballerinas (look for less here) in pristine condition in my size on TheRealReal for 50% off and snagged them. Eeek! Hence why I am not letting myself look at these Prada espadrilles, also on sale (40% off) in my size…

+Other good TRR gems: this Loewe raffia crossbody, this peony pink Hermes leather wrap bracelet, these Prada sandals (for fellow size 5 pixie feet people). I’ve also been stalking Vita Kin on TRR — their dresses are super splurgey. Someone in a size L needs to snag this one (in excellent condition).

+Reminder that Helix is offering 30% off mattresses (I think this is the lowest they go all year, including Black Friday). We recently got the Dusk Elite mattress (but you can take a quiz to figure out the best for you) and I slept in it in the guest bedroom while sick last month and WOW. Insane. Supportive but kind of holds you in a little cocoon hug. It’s divine. I was genuinely sad to return to my bed!

+BESTSELLERS: This linen striped midi and these sealife-motif beach pants were insanely popular. Both ultra-chic. Spectacular!

01. LINEN STRIPED MIDI // 02. BEACH PANTS // 03. FAHERTY TWO-PIECE SWIMSUIT // 04. ACTIVE SHORTS // 05. RAG + BONE LINEN ATLAS PANTS // 06. MY HUARACHES (25% OFF AND COMFORTABLE RIGHT OUT OF THE BOX!) // 07. BEACH DRESS // 08. RHOBACK SHORTS // 09. AMERICANA CARDIGAN // 10. BEST TANK EVER (USE CODE JENSHOOP)
