Holiday Dresses.

By: Jen Shoop

*Dress above by Borgo de Nor, currently 70% off (!!!), seen on Camila Carril while lounging at home — exactly where I’ll be donning my dressiest duds this year.

I don’t know about you, but I am desperate for any occasion to dress up these days. Mr. Magpie and I take turns taking mini to school and sometimes I put on a dress and booties when it’s my turn (and the weather cooperates) just because it makes me feel good. My sister and brother-in-law recently glammed up in coat-and-tie/heels and pretended to “go out to dinner” at home one night, lighting candles and fixing up fancy cocktails first, and then sitting down to a proper dinner on china after. Below, sharing some holiday dresses for the upcoming season — no judgment (in fact, mad props) if you doll up just to trim your tree at home…

BLACK VELVET MAGIC BY BORGO DE NOR

CUTEST BERRY RED DRESS

TIERED VELVET DRESS ($118) — THE SLEEVES ARE ON-TREND AND THE PRICE IS RIGHT! ALSO LOVE THE UNEXPECTED MARIGOLD SHADE

A FEATHERED, SATIN HOUSECOAT DRESS…IT’S 2020, WHY THE HELL NOT?

MY DREAM CHRISTMAS DRESS BY MARKARIAN ($$$$ BUT SO GOOD)

SAUCY GREEN VELVET FROM REFORMATION

TARTAN SHIRTDRESS FOR $35

VELVET, STUDDED SELF-PORTRAIT

MY WARM WEATHER MAGPIES: THIS ULLA IN THE GREEN (ON SALE!)

SEQUINED MINI

THIS RUFFLED COLLAR DRESS ($35!)

THIS CHIC CHIC CHIC VICTORIAN-ERA-MEETS-2020 STATEMENT (VAMPIRE’S WIFE VIBES FOR MUCH LESS)

SPEAKING OF VAMPIRE’S WIFE, J’ADORE THIS AND THIS

THIS RED KNIT DRESS (AMAL CLOONEY DOES CHRISTMAS — AND SEE THE SHOWSTOPPING HALIMA IN IT HERE)

MAJOR RED BOW

If you’re not a dress gal, a few finds to pair with what you already have in your closet…

SEQUIN TOP WITH YOUR FAVORITE TROUSERS

VELVET PULL-ON PANTS (CAN YOU EVEN IMAGINE PAIRED WITH THESE HEELS?!)

SLIP SKIRTS ARE BACK (I SEE YOU, CAROLYN BESSETTE KENNEDY) AND THIS UNDER-$100 STYLE COMES IN TWO GREAT COLORS

PLAID SKIRT

HIGH-RISE TROUSERS WITH A FEATHER-TRIM TOP (LOOK FOR LESS)

DRAMATIC SATIN CAPE (WOW WOW WOW — WOULD ALSO BE MAGIC ON A BRIDE)

And if you’re more inclined to pull out a tried-and-true solid-colored dress you already own, pair with plaid heels like these or these.

Lastly: a couple of really good new holiday decor finds:

MARBLE + BRASS MENORAH

FAUX-MOHAIR PLAID THROW PILLOWS

SUCH FUN JULISKA PLATES

PRETTIEST HOLIDAY NAPKINS

P.S. I think that we have a lot of Bodega Santas in the Magpie community.

P.P.S. Did you watch “Emily in Paris”? Apparently it’s a polarizing show. I shared some oblique thoughts on it here. (I enjoyed it.)

P.P.P.S. The sweater as accessory, you say?

  1. I wish you hadn’t shown us that Markarian dress… 😉 Thankful that there are no big Christmas events this year because I would have a hard time letting that one pass by!!! It’s just to die for.

I have a feeling that my dad/brother/sister are all going to lean into the “casual” vibes of a just-us holiday but this post has inspired me to dress up, even if I’ll be the only one!

    1. I know, I can’t un-see it…TOO good. Maybe it will be heavily marked down at one point and snapped up for future holiday…?

  2. Hey Jen! Love the blog and read daily. Just a small note from a single lady…we like to dress up to trim our trees, too, even without significant others! Felt compelled to comment, even though it was such a small piece of this great post, since this time of year often seems to shine a spotlight on (even happily!) unpartnered people.

    1. Hi Susan! Oh gosh, of course! Thoughtless of me. Going to make an update to the post.

Thanks for reading along and happy holidays!!

  3. Hi Jen! Funny, I JUST bought a few pieces of that Juliska pattern after searching high and low for Christmas tableware! I had initially intended to get Aerin’s scalloped rim plates with the red trim but sadly Williams Sonoma no longer carries them — I have a few in the blue but wanted the red for an understated holiday feel as I generally prefer white or mostly white plates. PSA, the Juliska is 25% off with code APP25 at Bloomingdale’s if you order through the app! I feel like Juliska doesn’t get marked down often…not sure if you’re able to affiliate link to Bloomingdale’s?

Lauren, I saw that velvet shirtdress in a recent email from Emerson Fry too and was so drawn to it!

And velvet pull-on pants? Genius! (Especially for when I want a second helping of dessert!)

    1. And I just checked, the APP25 promo I mentioned earlier is still going on today! (Should have confirmed that first, as I ordered the Juliska yesterday!)

      1. Oo thank you! You are so right that Juliska rarely goes on sale! This might push me over the edge…thanks, Mia!

        xx
