I few fab little finds that turned my head recently…

01. Mignonne Gavigan shell earrings. I own and LOVE these (seen above, with this Hill House dress, my Celine sunnies, and these heels). A big statement (they’re oversized) and a fun way to amp up a party look. They’re a mid-weight — not super heavy but not super light — but the French backing makes them easier to wear than your standard clip-on. Currently on sale! Sadly, these are sold out at Mignonne Gavigan itself, but I do have a code there for 20% off with JEN20. I just ordered these flower hoops from them, too! (Code works on them!)

02. Rainbow sarong. Also love these ones from Cesta, but they’re 2x the price.

03. Shell phone wristlet. This was so popular, it sold out and is now available for pre-order! I have one of these wristlets from this brand and they are like jewelry!

04. Pam Munson clutch. I love the frayed flower! Adds interesting texture and dimension to a look.

05. The Jacksons tote bag.

06. Lizzie Fortunato necklace. I’m OBSESSED with everything they’ve released this season, but especially this green shell, this turquoise heart, these flower earrings, and these drop earrings.

07. Call It By Your Name bandanna bag. All the cool girls are wearing!

08. Gold bangle set. I’m imagining throwing this on with white jeans, a white tee, and one of my Hermes scarves for a little bling statement.

09. $30 raffia earrings. The perfect pop.

10. Pearl cord necklace — fun to layer in with your usual stack.

11. Cult Gaia clutch.

12. Amazon sunnies!

13. Loewe crossbody bucket. The colors!

14. Teleties hair clip.

15. Gucci crochet bag.

P.S. My gift closet must-haves. I just added a few items to it, including these genius “gwrap” bags from Joy Creative — they require no tissue, no box, and come with a little to/from sticker that you use to seal the top.

P.P.S. Kitchen must-haves you might not own.

P.P.P.S. The art of letter writing.

Q: Date night dress!

A: You must try the Doen Jewel (seen above)! So saucy and chic. Runs pretty short — I’m 5’0, FYI! — but otherwise take your usual Doen size. I’m usually an XXS in their dresses, which is what I took here and it fits perfectly. (I am typically an XS. If you’ve never ordered at Doen, I’d go down a size — most of their styles are loose fitting.). I’m very into the slip dresses at the moment. I also just received this polka dotted Rixo and I’m obsessed with her! Will be wearing on a date with Mr. Magpie this weekend!

Q: Two dresses for a 10-year college reunion in DC at the end of May. Dress code one night summer cocktail and other is smart casual. Will be 14 weeks pregnant.

A: Fun, and congratulations! For summer cocktail, I’d consider this Coco Shop, one of the Fanm Mon Lorr dresses, this Mille, this SEA, or this Celia B. I’m pretty sure all of those would accommodate a 14-week bump! Pair with practical shoes — something you won’t be teetering around in. I love these daisy-studded mules for summer cocktail affairs. Knowing it’s in Georgetown might mean you should wear something with a block or platform heel instead of something spindly (all the brick!) — something like this or this! For smart casual, I’d probably still wear a dress. Something like this Parterre, this Mille, this Hunter Bell, or a Julia Amory caftan with Ancient Greek Eleftherias or something like this.

Q: Cute sneakers for my son.

A: I’m currently eyeing these for mine! He also loves these NBs — he’s owned in a few colors. Very comfortable and easy for him to get on/off himself.

Q: My son is graduating from college and I would like to get him a money clip. Help please!

A: So sweet. Congrats mama! Tiffany is a forever gift, and you can have it engraved with his initials. However, if that feels a bit precious for a college grad (!), Leatherology has a handsome brown leather one that you can emboss with initials, and it’s under $50. I’m not sure if he’s specifically asked for a money clip, but I would also suggest / contemplate getting him one of the needlepointed card cases from Smathers and Branson so he can safely carry ID, card, and cash in one place.

Q: How does the RMS compare to Goop Glow?

A: The RMS product is more concentrated and gel-like — a dab to work in all over your face. RMS acts like a primer, blurring and adding glow. The SuperGoop Glowscreen feels more like a tinted moisturizer to me, and you need more to apply all over the face. It’s a bit more lightweight and creamlike. Similar products that blur the line between skincare and makeup! Both are excellent. The RMS is my current favorite for layering beneath concealer/tinted moisturizer. It does a great job of creating a smooth, glowy surface to apply makeup on top of.

Q: Can you share your desk setup or inspo or products? Feeling the need to revamp my very commercial office space.

A: I feel you! I shared thoughts on designing a work space to cultivate creativity here. These pinboards are also really great ways to introduce color, inspiration, pattern to a depressing space. You can pin up pretty paper, invitations, quotes, hang tags. Ballard has some options for this, too.

Q: Do you have any dress recommendations for a Derby party? I’m seeing people I haven’t seen in 15 years, thank you!

A: Fun! I like something punchy and preppy-ish, like this hot pink, this La Ligne, this Fanm Mon, this CeliaB, this Rhode, this Hunter Bell, this Borgo de Nor, this Emilia Wickstead. Or go for a set like this Farm Rio (top, bottom).

Q: Dress for a summer wedding by the beach? On the more formal side and not too fitted.

A: The gowns from Taller Marmo and Bernadette (this, this, this!) are spectacular and loose-fitting. Pair with a strappy sandal, updo, big earrings, and small clutch. I also love this patterned floral dress and this Agua B.! If you’re after a black dress, go with this La Ligne!

Q: Bump friendly dress for the summer. Maxi or midi length with sleeves and under $200.

A: I think you’re looking for the Anthro Somerset dress! Such fun patterns. Quince also has an “inspired-by” dress in solid colors for under $100. Marea also has some gorgeous breezy caftans to consider. And finally – check out Julia Amory’s sale section for dresses that are around $200 (some a tad over) but well worth the overage IMO — these are pieces you will wear pregnant or not and can be dressed up or down. I especially love this caftan (I own in a lime green — can be worn unbelted), this Majorelle (so soft and breathable), and this shirt dress (polished perfection).

Q: Blue dress for my best friend’s wedding. Oregon in August. Solids preferred, or small pattern.

A: So sweet! This ALC or this L’Agence if formal; this Ref or this Self Portrait if cocktail.

Q: Matching swimsuits for twin toddlers (one boy, one girl), not Minnow.

A: Have you seen Dear Georgie? I love this sting ray pattern (girls’ version here).

Q: Sunday Mass dresses for my seven year old — not too frilly.

A: I have been eyeing some of the cute pieces from Pink Chicken. I feel like they’re a little less “frou frou” and more fun (my daughter’s in the same camp as yours on this matter). The Kelsey dress comes in cute prints, and I also love the colors in this style. Minnow also has some great options — this floral, this stripe, this gingham.

Q: What are the cute moms wearing to t-ball this summer?

A: I’m new to this world, too! I’m learning that t-ball practice and games require practicality — you are dusty, you are standing grass, you are swatting at gnats, you are sweating. I wore my Birks and a Mille Saffron dress and regretted it. Honestly, leggings, sneakers, and a t-shirt are the way to go. I’ll probably be wearing my Beyond Yoga set, Adidas sneaks, and either a sweatshirt (obsessed with this one) or a long-sleeved tee over top (I love my Vuori Halo — it is the perfect weight and shape — or would opt for something like the Ayr Morning tee or one of these destination tees) this weekend. Don’t forget the Cutter wipes.

P.S. Getting ready for sunny days ahead.

P.P.S. Maintaining wonder as a parent.

P.P.P.S. On navigating weepiness after sending my son off to school.

A few statement pieces that have caught my eye recently…I’m actually wearing the Alemais dress seen above to an oyster fest tomorrow night! I’ll be styling with these daisy-print mules.

01. ZIMMERMANN TOWELING COVER UP // 02. LIZZIE FORTUNATO EARRINGS // 03. AQUAZZURA STRAWBERRY SANDALS // 04. CELIAB DRESS // 05. NAGUISA ESPADRILLES // 06. ALEMAIS DRESS // 07. ALEMAIS LINEN PANTS // 08. FIGUE SKIRT // 09. LIZZIE FORTUNATO NECKLACE

You can shop all of my Shopbop hearts here.

P.S. My favorite white jeans and white shorts for warming weather.

P.P.S. A delicious cocktail to go with these summery looks.

P.P.P.S. What’s your intention for next month? I’ve been finding myself intuitively going into each new month with a specific intention/word. (Here was April’s.)

A roundup of launches, sales, and finds I’m into at the moment…

01. Soldout NYC’s iconic (and very popular) Everything Shirt was restocked in all sizes over the weekend. This has been out of stock and then be available for preorder only for weeks now. I’ve written extensively about this shirt, but the quality is insane, and something about the fit/silhouette/material make it look like it could be a prestige designer (Tom Ford?). Trust me, you’ll feel like a million bucks throwing this on with jeans.

SOLDOUT NYC EVERYTHING SHIRT (I’M IN AN XS)

02. Sezane launched a beautiful assortment of giftable items over the weekend. I am loving the quilted pouches and bags in the D. Porthault-esque blue heart motif (also comes in pink). So sweet for a new boy mom. Would be great for baby gear (toting pump to/from work?), throwing extra gear when heading over to grandma’s house, etc. Also love this La Mamma tee and these fun gingham socks! All such unexpected, quirky, fun finds to give or treat yourself to.

03. Speaking of Sezane, for my fellow D.C. area girlies, Sezane is opening a pop up shop in Georgetown May 3 through early 2025. (Address: 1211 Wisconsin Ave NW, Washington, DC 20007.) Nice to have the option to try their pieces on for size.

04. Veronica Beard added some amazing pieces to their sale section, and I have to say — of all of the pieces I’ve acquired over the past year or two, my VB jackets and blazers are among my most-worn and most-treasured, and there are some great jackets included in the sale. I put mine on with a tee and jeans and immediately feel pulled together, polished, and styled. I was just thinking about this as I moved my fall/winter clothes out of the way for my spring/summer ones, and realized how much I adore each one, and how much wear I get out of them. If I’m uninspired, I pull one out and immediately feel better (part of my “hero dressing” philosophy). Some standouts from the current sale section: this black lace stunner (I own this style of jacket in a different material and it’s probably my favorite silhouette — slightly longer and therefore more elongating on me), this variegated tweed (love the buttons), this navy leather (!!), this cream blazer (so crisp), and this zippered blue beauty.

VERONICA BEARD FERAZIA BLAZER

05. Speaking of VB, I just ordered a few items: their white shorts I wrote about last week with various styling ideas (will style when they arrive!) and one of their classic navy blazers. I’ve wanted a new navy blazer for awhile, and it feels like a smart investment that will stand the test of time forever. I’m imagining wearing with white jeans, a white tee, and leather sandals as we continue through this chilly spring.

06. Pistola Denim is running a Friends and Family sale that launched this morning and will run through 4/29. Inspired by Nicole Cassidy, who told us that jumpsuits are in for the season, I styled this chic jumpsuit last week (seen above). I was stopped by three different women asking about it! I took an XXS and it’s a tad snug. Still works as it has a good amount of stretch, but would probably order an XS if I hadn’t taken the tags off already (oops). In other words, take your true size (don’t size down as I did) in this. I wore with my Dans La Main Seagrass Kelly, La Ligne Jack sweater, and Chanel flats.

PISTOLA DENIM JUMPSUIT

I have also been getting a lot of wear out of these utility pants (also come in a basil green and a fun pink. These run a tad north of TTS – they’re a bit big – and have a good amount of stretch. I love them and wore to Mass on Sunday (see below) with one of my VB blazers!

PISTOLA DENIM SOPHIA PANTS

07. G. Label launched in 2016 and they just released a fab collection relaunching their favorite pieces from the past eight years. I own several G. Label pieces and they are fantastic, well-made, elevated wardrobe staples. This belted cardigan is one of my week-in-week-out mainstays. Ultra soft and the belt adds definition/interest. I find this a bit more wearable than the popular Jenni Kayne Cooper sweater since I’m petite — I love the look of the Cooper but the sleeves/shape are so oversized on me. This striped shirtdress from the G. Label collection would also be a forever piece.

08. This is not a new launch, but it is new to me: have you tried Crown Affair’s Hair Renewal Mask? O.M.G. As you know, I’ve been focused on hair health and hair styling enhancements this year. Mally Goldman said at some point over the past year that “the key to a good outfit is good hair,” and I realized how true that was, and how much better I feel when I have a good blow out. I’ve been doing a few things this year to have more “good hair days.” First: I’ve been applying Mielle’s $13 rosemary-mint hair oil and Anablue’s hair serum (15% off with JEN15) every few days. I apply a dropperful of each and massage into my scalp, then an extra bit worked into the ends of my hair. I tie my hair back in one of these terry scrunchies and let it soak in for an hour or sometimes longer if I’m going to workout/run. Then I shower as usual. Second: I’ve been trying different hot styling tools. I like this T3 Airebrush as an upgrade to my Revlon — it achieves a better result than the Revlon because it’s more powerful and I think holds better tension with the hair strands. I’m also eagerly awaiting the arrival of this thermal brush to use on day old hair — a Katie from Beach Reads and Bubbly rec. I plan to treat myself to the Dyson AirWrap after I hit a personal milestone (hopefully soon). Third: I’ve been getting more at-home blow outs using Glamsquad! It is such a treat to head into a weekend when I have a few different plans on deck with great hair / without having to worry about styling it myself. (Reminder that code JenniferS = $20 off for new users with code JenniferS and code JenniferS15 = $15 off for repeat users.) Finally, I just discovered this hair mask that did absolute wonders on my tired, probably over-styled hair. My hair literally changed textures?! It’s so soft and fluffy and voluminous and tangle-free. I’m astounded! Will absolutely be working this into the mix.

09. Laura Reilly wrote a great post on building a “no skips underwear drawer.” So brilliant as I think we all have pairs of underwear we routinely avoid wearing until we absolutely have to, or bras that “are fine, but not great.” She introduced me to a few brands/styles I’d never heard of. I also wanted to re-share this collection of Magpie-reader-recommended underwear and bras to contemplate. I know they’re pricey, but these whipped boyshorts from Negative are my absolute favorite to sleep in, and the number of readers who upvoted Natori’s Feathers bra led me to dig mine out and I’ve been loving them! They are truly the most comfortable underwire, and they give the best shape/silhouette. Several of Laura’s readers recommended Gap’s reasonably priced line of “Breathe” undergarments and I’m going to give those a shot, too.

10. I can’t get these new Loewe straw bags in the fun kiwi color out of my head! Love the oversized straw tote and also the mini bucket. Also released in a punchy strawberry pink!

11. Julia Amory has promised us the Betty dress in new prints for summer — I am watching like a hawk and will buy! I do like their black batik pattern (still in stock) but am holding out for something colorful for the season ahead. I just pulled out my Majorelle caftan and look forward to wearing it a lot in the coming weeks. So lightweight and easy to wear.

12. I’ve never purchased from here before, but I came across this jewelry brand called Luna Skye and I’m obsessed with two of their necklaces — both are fine jewelry, but are somehow on sale at the moment. I love this flower necklace (would be so chic layered in with other pieces) and this diamond-flecked mushroom necklace reminds me of some of the pieces from Brent Neale jewelry, at a lower price point. I feel like both would be so fabulous mixed in with my every day lineup.

13. One of my favorite fashion Instagram follows, Mary Glenn McElveen, just launched a collab with Dillard’s. I know Magpies have had mixed experiences with the quality of these launches, so take that into consideration, but I adore this vest — reminds me of the one I have from VB, or the Posse one popularized by Sofia Richie. You can buy on its own or with the matching skirt. (You can see M.G. styling it below.). Another option for styling white shorts!

P.S. That time Caroline Kennedy made me feel like I was somebody. (A true story!)

P.P.S. If you’re still enduring cold weather (it is currently 38 degrees outside…), I really enjoyed your comments on what you love about winter here.

P.P.P.S. Spring finds for children.

I bought a bunch of new beauty products as a part of the Sephora sale and couldn’t wait to share thoughts on them, along with a few other orders sprinkled in here and there.

+Hourglass Concealer Brush. Hands down the best purchase I made last month. This really works — dabbles/blends concealer seamlessly without picking up much product. The perfect angled/shaped bristles, and the perfect stiffness. Brushes are never exciting to buy but this is a worthy addition to your kit. I use it daily and don’t know why I didn’t upgrade sooner. I had been using the Merit brush but it was really too bulky to get into the inner eye, so I’d frequently use my finger. This solves that problem! Strong rec. All my favorite makeup brushes here.

+Nars Afterglow Blush in Dolce Vita. I bought this on the ecstatic recommendation of Tinx, and am…so so? It’s a sheer and buildable formula that I never seem to get just right. It’s either invisible or too much, and I don’t think it has great staying power. Wah! I wanted to love this so much. I’ll keep using and seeing if maybe it works better when I’m tan / when I blend with bronzer?

+Charlotte Tilbury Blush Wand in Pink Pop. Much more pigmented, with much better staying power than the Nars — use with a cautious hand. I really like this product and the sponge applicator, which I think makes application much easier — it’s like the perfect diameter to apply just enough and not too much with each dab. I still think I prefer the blush balms from Merit and Goop over this wand, but I will keep it in the mix. The color is a pretty coral-peach-pink that makes me feel fresh and summery. Overall, a solid but not “OMG RUN OUT AND GET IT” product.

+Sweed Miracle Powder. Oooh yes. I love this powder! I don’t always apply a powder, but for nights out and/or days I’m wearing a full face of makeup, this is a fabulous, translucent, glow-enhancing, make-up-setting wonder. I just noticed it’s starting to sell out. I take the fair color.

+RMS Hydra Bronzer (20% off through today only). I have been a decades-long devotee of Guerlain’s Terracotta bronzing powder but this is just as good, maybe even better because it has more glow/glimmer to it, which I like, and it’s about half the price. Very similar formulas that look super natural on. Cannot rec enough. I often wear this over the Chantecaille bronzing gel. (Also, if you’re shopping at RMS, take advantage of the 20% off sale and add this blurring SPF serum to cart. It is SO good and such an unusual product — I’ve never tried anything like it. It walks the line between skincare and cosmetics, offering a blurring / priming / glow effect while also offering sun protection.)

+Goop 72-Hour Hydrating Water Cream. You know I must try all new Goop products (all my favorites here)! This is a good, rich hydrating cream. I find it’s a bit heavy for me right now and often prefer the RMS luxe cream over it, so I put it in my second drawer to save for winter or any “omg, dry skin!” moments.

+Nars Radiant Creamy Concealer. Good, solid concealer. Offers decent coverage but I don’t know why it’s labeled “radiant” – I feel like it reads very flat/matte on me. I’ll use this until it’s done but I’ll continue to test for alternative everyday liquid concealer. I love the Cle de Peau but find that’s my favorite product for touch ups, undereyes, and redness around nose (it’s SO expensive — it feels wasteful to use all over?). I often want a liquid base to cover the entire eye area and lid and any other imperfections first, and then come in with the CDP as a top layer/final perfecting swipe. I think I’ll try either the Hourglass concealer or Saie’s new radiant concealer next. Probably Hourglass first, given how highly I think of their brush!

+Coco + Eve Bronzing Face Drops. I’m pretty scared of tanners (color always looks orange on me, plus hate the smell), but the Coco and Eve sent me a few of their products, and I surprised myself by liking this one and using it a few times this month, specifically when I was first breaking out a few sundresses and felt ultra-pale. The drop formula is lightweight and easy to use — without a strong smell. (I wouldn’t say it’s totally scentless, but it’s not the typical smell you think of.) I’ve used this a handful of times this month and have been pleased with the results: I blend two drops into my moisturizer and take my time working it all over my face. This feels like tanner with training wheels — not scary. They also sent me their bronzing foam and I plan to try for an upcoming event. Stay tuned! (Also, they offered us 15% off with code MAGPIE15.)

Currently testing these products or waiting impatiently for them to arrive — you can expect thoughts on all of these in my next installment:

+Mane Thermal Round Brush. Katie of Beach Reads and Bubbly has been loving this product, and she shared a screen grab from one of her readers who wrote in to say it’s changed her life — her day-old hair looked incredible! I was specifically pulled in because my biggest hair styling woe is that no matter how aggressively I use a round brush / round heated tool, and how much spray I use to keep it in place, the ends of my hair always get weird and either go jagged-straight or flip the wrong way, and I hate it so much! All I want is a smooth bend inward, and all my hair wants is…to not listen. And it’s not even consistent! 1/3 of my hair will bend outward, the other 1/3 inward, and the last 1/3 stick straight with no bend at all. Anyway, this is exactly what I’ve been looking for — a tool to tame my half-day-old hair, or day old hair, so that it bends back into place. A curling iron has never worked for me because it’s too…precise? Like, you have to just awkwardly curl the very tip under and then there’s a weird kink, or it’s too curled under. Anyway, stay tuned! I will report back.

+L’Ange Glass Hair Spray. (I just discovered this is also carried on Amazon!) I was totally sold on this product from this marketing video. Ordered on the spot.

+Queen Musia Mascara with Lash Growth Extract. I saw someone rave about this on Instagram and wanted to try. I was drawn to the fact that the lash growth ingredients are plant-based (plankton extract), and the mascara is clean.

+Roz Milk Hair Serum. All about the hair care at this time in my life! Have heard such good things about this and you know how I feel about Roz products — my favorite. 15% off with MAGPIE15.

Did you try any standout products because of the Sephora sale (or just in general, recently)? Please share reviews (good and bad) in comments!

P.S. More recent beauty discoveries and reviews here. Still loving those YSE exfoliating pads. SO GOOD. I’ve been using heavily the past week — needed to really refresh and wake up the skin.

P.P.S. Under-$20 beauty buys — this was a super popular post! Some great recs in the comments, too.

P.P.P.S. Catch and release — an essay on writing.

This morning, I’m re-publishing an essay from several years ago about a moment from my childhood that changed the way I thought of myself. I was reminded of it last week when Mr. Magpie was out of town, and my seven year old daughter asked whether she could stay up late to watch The Eras tour with me. She’d seen it multiple times, but it was on her mind all week, as Mr. Magpie was out of town on business, and I once let her stay up late to watch TV with me when Mr. Magpie was traveling, and it’s now become a tradition. He leaves, and the begging begins! Anyhow, as I sat watching the concert with her, I was struck by how, all of the sudden, our conversations feel more like…well, conversations. We talked about Taylor’s glittery boots, how it was possible that she’d changed so quickly backstage, whether we liked a particular song or not, how many people were in the audience. I looked over and thought to myself: You feel like a girlfriend. And then I remembered the time I said something negative about myself, and my mother stopped and got down at eye level with me, and said: “Don’t you ever say that about my best friend.” I was shook! I’d not known my mother considered me a friend, and it changed my world. So I looked over at my girl and told her: “I’m having so much fun with you — you’re my best friend.”

She beamed back.

The moment couldn’t have come at a better time, because earlier this week, my daughter was changing into her pajamas, and she looked at herself in the mirror and said: “Mama, I feel fat.” It took the wind out of me. I can barely write those words now. I have spent her entire life consciously, fastidiously avoiding all mentions of body type and shape; we never, ever use the terms “skinny” or “fat”; we don’t label foods as “good” or “bad.” I struggled with disordered eating for half of my teens and I am resolute on these points. I have been so meticulous on this front that I thought perhaps she meant “I feel full,” and asked her as much. She shook her head. “No, I feel fat.” I was, frankly, livid. I knew she’d not learned the concept at home, and wanted to have a few choice words with whoever had introduced it to my daughter. (I later found out, unsurprisingly perhaps, that a girlfriend of hers had called her “fat” — this girl is a sweet child, and I knew immediately that it had been delivered unknowingly, and without malice. Probably something she heard at home and repeated without intent. Still…!) I was anxious to reassure my daughter, and at the same time, did not want to overblow the moment by giving it too much rhetorical emphasis. (I’m thinking specifically of a time my sister called my brother “a perv” when she was six or seven and my brother lost it. For years and years, I considered “perv” one of the worst insults that could be slung. Now I see it for what it is, but the point has always remained — sometimes when we draw too much attention or rally an outsized response, it makes the situation more intense than it needs to be, and draws unneeded arrows. I didn’t want her sitting around thinking words about body type are some kind of diabolical language — they aren’t! I just don’t like them weaponized in any way.)

All of these thoughts skittered through my mind simultaneously as I sat a few feet from her in her gliding armchair. I closed my book and I said, as calmly and firmly as I could, aiming to keep my quiet rage out of my voice: “Emory, you are perfect just the way you are. I don’t like that word, and I don’t like you saying anything about yourself in an unkind way. You’re my friend, and I don’t want anyone saying anything unkind about my friends.” She looked at me with enormous eyes and nodded. I presume she felt similar to how I’d felt when my mother had spoken to me in a similar tone.

It felt good, then, to bend the conversation around in a positive way later in the week, as we watched the Eras tour and I let her know how much I appreciated her friendship. I’ll never forget her beaming response.

My original essay below.

******

I was seven or eight, standing in the long mirrored hall of closets in the dressing area of my parents’ bedroom. I remember staring angrily at the spectator-detailed cut-outs of my navy blue t-straps.

“I hate myself!” I cried out, my voice strident and demonstrative.

My mother placed her hands on my shoulders and crouched down so that she was at eye level with me.

Don’t you ever say that about my best friend,” she said, with a deliberate slowness that made my stomach drop.

I burst into tears. I was, frankly, more surprised than anything. I had not known prior how serious the words were, nor that my mother considered me “her best friend.” Was it true…? Even at seven, I found myself adept at separating the chaff from the wheat when it came to conversations with adults. It must be, though, I remember reasoning, my eyes as wide as saucers, peering up at my mother’s serious and drawn face.

I wept into my mother’s shirt, her comforting arms.

I have no recollection of what precipitated the outburst, nor any memory of what came after that exchange in her hallway. What I remember, with a kind of piercing clarity, was that it was a vile thing, to talk about myself badly.

So why do so many of us do it? We are so often our own worst critics, and if the wolves don’t come for us, we invent them all the same. I remember a couple of months ago, Nellie Diamond, founder of Hill House Home, talked about combatting criticism, and she commented that: “There’s nothing bad that anyone could say about me that I haven’t already told myself.” I was flabbergasted by her candor, by the sadness of the sentiment. And yet there was a pebble of truth in her words that chafed. I, too, have called myself names, have lambasted myself for mistakes, far more injuriously than anyone else I’ve met in this life.

My repeated intention for the past many years has been grace — giving others grace, giving myself grace. I have become more fluent in the practice, but still, I can be hard as nails on myself, especially when it comes to matters of parenting. A few weeks ago, after a parenting misstep, I sat in bed lamenting. Midway through, my mother’s words appeared to me, as though a peace offering.

Don’t say that about my best friend.

I hoisted myself out of the moment. I thought about what I might say to a girlfriend criticizing herself for the same meandering. Reassurance poured forth.

The next time you find yourself mid-self-critique, pause for a second. Imagine a loved one — a mother, a sister, a best friend, an aunt — and how she might react on your behalf if she could hear that inner monologue.

My guess is:

Don’t say that about my best friend.

This isn’t a formal mother’s day gift guide, but each and every item would make a great gift for a mother. I also own and love all of these items. Sort of a roundup of some of my most treasured belongings…

+My heart ID necklace. I’ve had a little influx of questions about it lately. You can engrave on both sides — I have Landon’s initials on the front and our wedding date on the back of the big one (I have the 16.5″ one), and my children’s first initials on the smaller one (I have the 15.5″). The cut off to order in time for Mother’s Day is today! I’m showing a photo of how the two look together below, as a number of you have asked!

+Old Faithful: Lake Pajamas. If you’re stumped, these are a tried and true winner. They recently restocked their popular Relax set in a pretty dusty hydrangea blue — apparently they have trouble keeping these in stock! — but I also think their new weekend bundles in either this format or this one are thoughtful gifts. A friend of mine said these are great for travel when you don’t know whether you’ll run hot or cold, and I also think they extend the longevity of the set. (You can swap in the shorts for warmer weather, and wear the long in colder months.) Last but not least, I’ve more or less been exclusively wearing their kimono sets the last month. The same swingy and ultra-soft material as the relax set, but a shape that’s a bit more flattering. As an aside — I should have added this to my list of life hacks/rules from last week, but as I get older, I’ve learned to just pay the $5 or $10 to have things gift boxed/wrapped by the store. The presentation is so much nicer when you’re having something shipped directly to a recipient! I used to avoid this surcharge like the plague but now I lean into it. Lake’s boxes are particularly nice and sturdy.

+A Julia Amory husband shirt. Have yet to find someone who doesn’t love this piece — can be worn as a cover-up, tucked into jeans, etc. So soft (not starchy at all!) and breathable, and always in such great prints. I just bought myself this version in the unexpected brown with the matching pareo.

+Camilla Moss scripture cards. I keep these at my deskside and often times, my eye drifts over to them at just the right moment.

+ Fellow kettle for a tea or coffee lover. I truly love this brand. We started with their bean grinder and then replaced our old electric kettle with their gooseneck option. We now also have their largest capacity kettle (without a gooseneck, which means it’s more versatile and better for pouring tea IMO).

+Love all of Janessa Leone’s packable hats. So intelligently designed and the best shapes!

+Have gifted both my mom and my MIL the elevated sweatshirts from Alice Walk. They’re the dreamiest, highest-quality material and they come in beautiful colors and even stripes. A great gift for a reluctant adopter of athleisure. (I own a crewneck and two of the half-zips — they are divine!). If she’s a bit sportier (or if you are), you might also consider Spanx’s AirEssentials half-zip. I love that material, too. The style is a bit more cropped and sporty.

+Anything from OSEA. I love this female-founded, clean beauty brand. Everything smells wonderful and works beautifully. I especially love their body butter and salt scrub. Either would be an indulgent, spa-oriented gift for a mama. Something about the brand just feels good — wholistic, natural.

+Gorgeous scalloped acrylic frames. I have one of these on my desk with Tilly in it. Note the the price is for two!

+One of my most prized possessions is this Weezie robe. I wear it literally every morning. Perfect weight (on the thinner side) with a nice length and a long sash. Heidi Carey has a similar style robe but in great botanical patterns.

+The RoundHouse has such gorgeous platters and tabletop finds. I loved this one from my Easter tablescape.

+I almost always have a candle going in the evenings! I love the ones from Linnea — a little more reasonably priced than Diptyque and Trudon, but exceptional, complex scents. Currently loving Fields and Rosewater. On the splurgier end, I love Trudon’s scents. They are rich and multi-faceted but not overpowering.

+The Frank & Eileen Patrick popover — my favorite alternative to a white tee. Easy, relaxed fit but more fitted below the elbow to the wrist for a flattering silhouette. I have in white, but also love the new striped offerings, and all the pretty pastels, too!

+My two favorite face masks are both from Clarins: this one is a must-own (I didn’t even know my face looked puffy sometimes before I used this — it somehow chisels the features and leaves skin so happy and soft), and this is reinvigorating (feels like an ice plunge).

+The best vase. I reach for this every single time. The ruffled lip makes it so easy to arrange a bouquet — they sort of fan out naturally! — and the height/size is perfect for your standard arrangement.

+Byredo’s blanche or lilac scents. Of course, all scents are so personal, but these feel like crowd-pleasers, and they come in a cute little trio of floral-scentric mini sprays here.

+Exquisite cocktail napkins, for the woman who has it all and enjoys entertaining. These come beautifully boxed.

+A great day trip duffel or baby bag. It’s currently 15% off in honor of Mother’s Day. It’s so thoughtfully designed, with lots of zippered compartments and slots, and a little side panel you can use to keep shoes separate! (Would be good for gym/travel for this reason.). I just got this in the limited edition pistachio color.

+OK, this one I don’t own (yet) but a gorgeous cashmere cardigan in a perfect oatmeal hue?! It’s a slam dunk.

+I usually use this State Bags belt bag when I’m on a walk, but I’m thinking of buying both my mother and I this Dagne Dover phone sling. I think it’d be perfect for my mom to take on her walks in the morning. Just the right size for phone, AirPods, and rosary — her stalwart walk companions.

+A couple of smaller buys that could be bundled together (or just a treat yourself moment!): my favorite writing pens; my personal alarm (I carry when running); this amazing ice roller; best $18 depuffing eye cream; Aesop incense sticks; my favorite notebooks; truffle popcorn; really good candy.

Mr. Magpie often sends me a text around 5:15 or 5:30: “Come down?” He’s finishing up his work day and seeking a sliver of quiet companionship before our nanny leaves at six and we subsequently barrel into dinner and bedtime. I routinely decline. I know some day I will look back at those texts and regret not saying yes to every single one. Not necessarily in the morose sense — just that, even in a decade’s time, I’ll never be found saying: “I shouldn’t have given him those 30 minutes each day. How foolish of me.” I anticipate it will be the inverse: “I should have said yes and enjoyed a little more ease and connection while we were in the thick of raising two young children.”

Over the weekend, we attended two funerals and the combination of witnessing the grief of loved ones, hearing about the lifelong friendships of the deceased, and moving through several days with a heavy heart led me to widen the margins in my day and say “yes” to a lot more down time with Mr. Magpie this week. I felt the same kind of fatigue of heart that I did just after Tilly died: as though my inner world was puffy, tender, in need of slower movement. I’ll never forget one morning a day or two after Tilly passed away: I kept finding myself needing to pause and stand still. I would be so overcome by a wracking, nearly physical wave of grief, that I’d need to stop short and collect myself. At some point, exhausted by the fits and starts, I changed into sweats, put my spa playlist on in my noise canceling headphones, and sat on the ground taking deep, intentional breaths. The grief didn’t change size, but it felt as though I did. I learned that physically slowing down enabled me to better withstand, and accommodate, the loss.

Feeling a similar kind of exhaustion at the top of the week, I listened to myself and slowed down. I peeled away from my desk early, booked a hot yoga class, took a long walk with a friend, asked Mr. Magpie to accompany me down the block to deposit some mail into the mail box, played hooky in order to sit outside my son’s tennis lessons, and curled up in Mr. Magpie’s arms at night instead of kicking his wandering foot out of my way. (I’m only half kidding…I’m fairly brutish on this front — he likes to have his feet pressed against mine every night at bed, and I need space and room to fall asleep! We have an ongoing nightly routine about this.)

This week, I just let myself drift into things. I sat outside. I stared at the tree in my front yard. (Who knows what my neighbors thought? Eh well — this is the new, nearly-40-year-old Jen who cares increasingly less about what others think.) I found myself enjoying the coffee runs and drop offs rather than seeing them as “things to tick off the list.”

The pace was not without cost. I let a lot of things drop. I didn’t get back to people, I didn’t accomplish as much writing as I’d have liked to, I set aside the long to-do list I had and instead watched part of the Eras tour with my daughter, I took the path of least resistance when serving the kids dinner — meaning several nights of buttered noodles and fish sticks, accompanied by their iPads. (Mr. Magpie will sometimes encourage me to do this by saying: “POLR, baby! PATH OF LEAST RESISTANCE!” Sometimes, we all need the extra yardage, even though it goes against our goal of eating the same meal together as a family most nights of the week, without screens.)

In short, the pace is untenable for my week-in-and-week-out life, but my God, was it ever needed, and did it ever feel good. As I was moving through my week, narrating my decisions to Mr. Magpie, he observed: “You’re always saying that whenever you feel like you have no time to work out, you need it the most. That’s what’s going on here. When you feel like you have the least amount of time to play hooky, you need it the most.”

I’m glad I gave myself a soft, slow-motion landing this week. I needed it. I hope you listen to yourself this week, too.

Also this week…

+Peeling off early for happy hour with Mr. Magpie. I’ve been loving these etched-star glasses from Half Past Seven for margs. I believe they will be releasing them in a bunch of fun colors this week – stay tuned!

+OMG. How did I not know own one of these ice rollers sooner?! It feels divine in the morning and is one of my new favorite parts of my A.M. routine. Especially refreshing after a late or sleepless night, and with all the pollen in the air! I immediately texted a few girlfriends and my sisters with news of this.

+Post hot yoga Tatte run. They have this turkey sandwich that is, truly, basic, but I can’t get enough of it. Turkey, cucumber, avocado, sprouts with a green herb dressing on toast. It is perfection. No notes.

+My son living his best life at the dentist. Of all the advancements since my childhood, pediatric dentistry has to be top of the heap. It’s like a spa day for them! TVs on the ceiling, blankets, swag bags, sunglasses, flavored toothpaste options galore! In all seriousness, though, I sat in the dentist’s office this week and had one of those profound “look how far I’ve come” moments. Longtime readers might remember I’ve endured two very stressful visits to the dentist with my daughter. The first involved a tantrum so epic on W. 86th Street in NYC that a stranger stopped and asked whether my daughter needed help. As in, she thought I might have been abducting her or something along those lines. I was so deflated by the experience, I turned around, asked my husband to cancel the meeting he was leading, and had him accompany us to the dentist. I recall sitting outside the dental office (COVID protocols were then in place, so only one parent could sit with the child) and crying on a small, gross chair on the Upper West Side. The second took place just after we’d relocated to Bethesda, and everyone was out of sorts. My daughter became so hysterical in the chair that she began to throw implements around the room. I still can’t believe it happened — it is so out of character for her to do anything physical like that! — and I was both mortified and overwhelmed. After I’d somehow calmed her down, I went to apologize to the dentist and burst into tears. Big, hiccuping ones. The dentist drew me into her arms and said, “Change is hard. It’s OK, mama. This happens all the time.” Just thinking about it makes me teary-eyed. The goodness of other moms who have been there! She knew, intuitively, that “it’s never the cream.” I felt so supported in that moment. I shifted from “the mom with the kid who is out of control” to “a mom having a hard day — we’ve all been there.” Anyhow, as I sat in the dentist office this week, and watched my children placidly submit to their treatments, I thought: “OK, mama. We made it past some invisible milestone. Onward!” It’s so important to quietly celebrate those little wins. We survive 100% of our bad days, you know?

+A very good combination of ice creams. Like a PB&J!

+We normally make coffee at home, but we ran out of beans (after having unexpected weekend house guests) and then Mr. Magpie was out of town on business, so I treated myself to multiple iced oat lattes this week. An expensive, and delightful, habit. (I usually get mine from Grace St. in Bethesda, but also had one from Sunday Bakeshop at Pike and Rose.) Also below: pulled out my favorite Dans La Main seagrass Kelly for its seasonal debut, and have to say — the taupe rollneck sweater I’m wearing in the second photo below has become such a staple in my weekly wardrobe. I usually prefer to buy in color, but you really do reach for the neutrals more than you’d think. This outfit made me feel Nancy Meyers-ish, as if I might be going to a beach house this weekend. (You can get the look for less from Alice Walk. And similar vibe, in cardigan format: this $165 cashmere beauty that so many of you have purchased!). I paired with everyone’s favorite Gap white jeans (so many of you have written to rave about these after ordering) and Eleftheria sandals (lots of you also bought and adore these on my rec).

+Related to above: years ago, my best friend and I used to text each other photos of “Soy Milk Latte Fridays.” She was in New York, I was in D.C. or Chicago, and it was this funny little ritual that made us feel connected in spite of the distance. Something about seeing her feet and indulging in the same favorite beverage felt reassuring to me. Out of the blue, I sent her the photo above on Friday, and she immediately sent me this in response! The same nail color, the same drink order (now both of us do oat milk), similar chunky knits! I was charmed. (I also guessed, correctly, she was in Soho versus her home neighborhood of Chelsea.)

+Scenes from a slow Sunday: the children engaging in water play; a small bowl of candy salad for dessert (P.S. – these little snack bowls, seen below, from In the Roundhouse are the perfect size for the nibbly bits I mentioned here); me reading a book and chugging this refillable water bottle from our trip to Calistoga, CA (the slogan “Be Well” leapt out at me and I carried it around all week); another batch of shrub spritzes (mentioned them first here, served up in the aforementioned Half Past Seven glasses on top of my favorite acrylic coasters); and some mixed grilled veg from an amazing Persian dinner Mr. Magpie made that evening. He mainly drew from recipes in this new cookbook he just ordered.

+I recently discovered that Honest has a line of children’s products for sensitive skin. My son has always had sensitive skin and sometimes the products I’ve used to treat his irritations have made things worse. I was thrilled to add some of these to the arsenal! All are fragrance free and have soothing ingredients like calendula and aloe. He was very excited about the bubble bath. Seen below with our favorite Weezie hand towels. I love these because each of my children have their own designated towels they keep for their own use by their separate sinks. I’m finding that at their ages (nearly 5 and just 7), giving each his/her own version of a thing prevents a lot of strife.

+Closing with this: a Magpie reader and talented artist, Paris Geraniotis, sent me this illustration of Tilly. I absolutely treasure it — and am so bowled over by her generosity. She captured Tilly’s smile so well. I can’t wait to have it framed.

Onward, Magpies!

What Inspired Me This Week…

+NANCY MEYERS’ COURTYARD: I remember a few years ago when Nancy Meyers opened her home to Architectural Digest, someone said: “Now we know what heaven looks like.” Ha! She shared a stunning snap (seen above) of a courtyard on her property this week and the wisteria, the French doors, the ivy! It was too much! Dreamy.

+WHAT GOES FIRST? We’ve been in an unexpectedly busy period — last-minute out of town guests (our best friends, in town from New York for a funeral), the funerals themselves, rescheduled dentist and doctor appointments for our children that happened to fall the same week, Mr. Magpie out of town, last-minute plans in formation. We’ve had to let some things go, and I came across a post on Instagram that read: “Some of the most kind and thoughtful kids I know are raised in houses that are a mess, by parents who forget practices and wear mismatched socks. At times, I think this may not be a coincidence. When parenting life becomes overwhelming, perhaps they know what to let go and what to put first.” There was an interesting discourse that unfolded in the comments about how statements like this imply that parents who do prioritize a tidy home and matched socks are somehow missing the point, or putting the emphasis on the wrong syllable. I don’t want to involve myself in that conversation (generally allergic to formulas that are this vs that), but I was stirred by the more general point that we need to “know what to let go and what to put first.” My priority this past week has been supporting two friends who lost parents, and spending time with our best friends while they were in town. We let other things go in order to honor those priorities. And you know what? It felt right. Even as Mr. Magpie and I found ourselves occasionally ensnared by the fall out (“oops – who’s taking Hill to tennis?” and “yikes, we never got back to so-and-so,” and “we have no one to take Emory to her soccer game!”), we felt that we were where we needed to be. The rest can wait.

+SNAPSHOTS OF PARIS: I am newly obsessed with the Instagram account the Paris Shuffle. I can’t stop dreaming of a visit, but in the meantime, these snaps are scratching the itch.

+SHOPPING: Mille’s new collection! New silhouettes and prints! I ordered this maxi dress in a vibrant patchwork print, but was tempted by this fun mini, which had unfortunately already sold out in my size. (This brand runs big – go down at least one size. I take an XXS and it’s still very roomy — I’m typically an XS.) I also loved this floatie white mini. They just extended us a 15% off code — JEN15 — for 15% off. I also ordered this thermal brush (reportedly the best tool for day-old hair on the rec of Katie) and both the Veronica Beard and Agolde white shorts I shared in this post. I had to live out the styling fantasy and wanted to see which would fit better!

+TRAVEL AHEAD: We are heading to Colorado with all my siblings, their children, and my parents this summer, in part to celebrate my 40th birthday (!), but Mr. Magpie is also planning a smaller, more low-key getaway to ring in my 40th with just a few of my close friends that will involve ample pool and cocktail time. I have of course already begun plotting my wardrobes for both trips (so much fun for me), and this week, these fun linen beach pants arrived (love the pattern) and are a perfect match for my cornflower blue Hunza G suit (more inventory here)! I also ordered this Julia Amory pareo and matching husband shirt in an unexpected brown pattern. I love the way Julia styles these together (and insists they can be worn beyond just the beach/pool) — watch her video and see how she ties hers here. (Of course, wearing my packable sunhat from Janessa Leone below, and my beloved Dans La Main seagrass Kelly bag.)

+VINEGAR HEAD: I must have a deficiency in something because I crave vinegar at every turn. I enjoyed these new salt and vinegar Goldfish crisps this week — but they still pale in comparison to the best salt and vinegar crunch I’ve ever experienced: Siete’s Sea Salt and Vinegar with a Hint of Serrano chips. If you see them, buy them. A few fellow vinegar fiends weighed in on Insta and raved about salt and vinegar popcorn from Live Love Pop, the malt vinegar chips from Utz, and salt and vinegar almonds from Blue Diamond. Will be trying all three, yes indeedy.

+HIGH FASHION: Rosie Assoulin’s orange and pink gingham concoction caught my eye. Spectacular! A dressed up aperol spritz, and of course drafts off the current popularity of gingham.

What Inspired You This Week…

+New tendrils of fragrance inspiration from the scent enclave, who swooped in to answer a Magpie’s question about what scent to wear to her wedding. (Check the comments!)

+Some great life hacks in the comments here. I love the idea of buying the same gift for every kid for a season at a time — just buying several in bulk and taking the question marks out of “what should we give Sam for his birthday?”

+On Instagram, I did an “Ask Me Anything” session and someone asked: “How to handle mom guilt around working and having a nanny.” I shared some thoughts there, and was surprised by how many women wrote to me saying they needed to hear what I had to say. Sadly, I have no magic bullet or breakthrough philosophy, but I did share this: “Mom guilt is such a pressing and pervasive issue among our generations of mothers. I do not have an answer, but I am constantly and consciously working toward a place of grace and ease here. I’ve determined this is the best strategy I can have because I’m not going to be my best self if I am constantly beleaguered by feelings of not being or doing enough. You are a mother, and you are a professional, and you are doing your best in both circles. You are enough.” I went on to add: “I feel that motherhood is a part of me and not all of me. I am motivated and fulfilled by my own creative pursuits, and my business contributes meaningfully to our household income. I must work, and I love what I do. It is financially and creatively sustaining. It’s OK that these things do not always resolve tidily with my role as a mother and my love for my kids. It’s about seeing the imperfect field as it is, accepting it, and looking for way to let some air out of the room.”

Curious to hear your response, frameworks, etc, on managing mom guilt – whether you’re working inside or outside the home, whether you have help or do not, etc.

+Shopping: Dozens and dozens of us ordered this $18 caffeine eye cream. It’s excellent — I mentioned that I’ve been waking up with puffy eyes, and this really solves the problem for me. On the fashion side of the house, this caftan was the top seller, and the top version came in second! All bestsellers below, although I forgot to include these Gap white jeans we all now own (again, dozens of us purchased this week!)…!

Bare bark now softened by the smudging bloom:

our stalwart front yard tree, the one who lost its leaves and then stood naked through winter,

suddenly backrolled into a blur of blossom.

Spring is everything growing quickly, and all at once.

This momentum carries us along with it. We finds ourselves busy with plans and unnovel ideas: sort the garage, sell the baby strollers, get outside into the green and yielding day. I am energized by it, and sometimes too much. There is a point at which the stimulant spring feels like over-exertion. On the phone this week, my sister said: “I don’t know if it’s the sudden change in seasons, but we’re agitated. We just want to get out, do things!” I knew exactly what she meant. That April agita!

But these petals will soon litter the lawn, and this month of bustle will give way to the languor of high summer. Nothing gold can stay, as Robert Frost put it.

How have I never noticed how receptive I am to the turn of seasons? How the trees in their various stages of dress and disrobe affect my mood and manner? And yet this impressionability is a comfort to me. I learned this week that spiders can dream, that dolphins have accents, and that ants bury their dead. We are, after all, just nature. As small and great.

+Two great new arrivals at Boden: these sandals, which remind me of a pair from Isabel Marant about 6x the price, and this fun striped-bottom dress, which I’d pair with a fun sandal like this.

+I do not need another pretty spring/summer dress — I already have a whole fleet lined up!! — and yet this striped wonder is in my cart.

+My MIL tucked a chain mail pot scrubber into my stocking a few years back and it’s one of the best cleaning tools in our arsenal. It is so much better than those steel wool pads that trap moisture, grit, and bacteria! You can toss this one in the dishwasher after a good scrub, and it never stinks!

+There’s an active conversation (especially on Substack) about whether or not Sambas or in/out. I say where what you love and will continue to sport my mint green Sambas! (They are also supremely comfortable.) But. For something just a little different, the Handball Spezials are available in such good colors right now — do I need these blue ones?!

+OMG – I had a wicker elephant side table just like this in my room when I was growing up. So fun and unexpected. Would be cute in a living space, too. And, if you want something a little less “extra,” this $119 wicker side table is excellent. I have one in my studio! It frequently sells out but you can currently order for delivery in early May.

+Love the pattern on this Parterre skirt. So chic!

+Good American’s take on the Hunza G suit — under $100. (Details, fit, etc on my favorite Hunza G here.)

+You had me at white eyelet. I can’t get enough of it! (Also love this adjacent white embroidered mini from Mille’s new collection, which is BANANAS!)

+Fab $30 statement earring.

+These $30 knot sandals are adorable.

+This female-founded small business makes shampoo bars, which are a big trend among the environmentally conscious, as they do not involve single-use plastic bottles. I like that this brand sells different styles of bars for different purposes (volume, clarification, etc.). The packaging is gorgeous, too. If you’re interested in green beauty, you should follow my friend Maggie. She’s an expert in this area!

A reader asked about styling chino shorts, and it took me down a little shopping rabbit hole that has now left me determined to buy a pair of long-ish white denim shorts for summer. I’m not a shorts gal, but I must live out this styling fantasy. (Inspo above from Symphony of Silk and below from Irma Tessar.)

First up: the shorts. Slightly long, a modern mom-fit. I found three excellent options at different price points: Veronica Beard ($$$), Agolde ($$), and Zara ($).

Second up: styling. I love the idea of wearing these shorts with a more polished top and a trendy pair of sandals, or an unexpected little jacket and some ladylike flats. These details make the entire look intentional and fashion-conscious.

Styling Mom Shorts: Look 1.

Top: Alex Mill. I also love Rag & Bone’s slightly more expensive Maxine top — it has a great polish/shine to it, but wears like a t-shirt — and you can get the look for less with either this one from Nordstrom’s house brand or this one from Sezane.

Bag: Loewe Anagram tote. I’m eyeing this bag seriously after seeing that it’s being released in both a hot pink and a kiwi green. I love a bold color moment! I’ve never once regretted picking a bag in a statement color.

Sandals: Prada. Look for less with these or these.

Sunglasses: Celine. Look for less with these.

Styling Mom Shorts: Look Two.

Jacket: BA&SH. Look for less with this.

Tee: COS. This just arrived and is a great, luxe, heavy-weight cotton. It runs a tad cropped but otherwise TTS. I took the XXS. TBH, very similar to the $15 Uniqlo. I would put them neck and neck — similar, thick weight; structured fit; etc.

Bag: Celine. Look for less with this Demellier or Sezane.

Flats: Margaux. A good price for a really soft, high-end looking flat. I own these in red.

Watch: Hermes. Look for less with March Hare (10% off with code MAGPIEBYJENSHOOP).

P.S. The things your children will miss.

P.P.S. On maintaining wonder as a parent.

P.P.P.S. Matching sets for spring.

I was charmed by this recent post titled “Life Hacks,” in which writer Aja Frost collates a miscellany of little lessons learned the hard way — e.g., “Take a picture of coat check stubs, dry cleaning tickets, etc. so that if you lose them (every time), you can still get your stuff,” and “If you need a new or renewed passport in a hurry, write to your congressperson; their office will expedite it.”

What are the little rules, hacks, and codes of personal conduct you, too, live by?

Here are a few of mine —

01. Have lots of small “nibbly bits” scattered in dishes around your home when guests are over. I find people are much less likely to tuck into a platter of cheese or a tray of snacks when it’s in the center of the room, difficult to access without making a big show of it! Related: pre-slice cheese (even the kinds you don’t think should be sliced) and generally avoid anything that requires a fork and knife when you’re entertaining in a living space (versus in a seated dinner). Make it easy for people to serve themselves.

02. Never arrive as a guest at someone’s house empty-handed. Doesn’t have to be fancy — a bar of soap, a parcel of cookies, a small rosemary plant!

03. Send a hand-written note whenever possible, but especially for thank yous and condolences. When you are writing a condolence card, share something specific about the deceased — a memory, something you loved about them, something they once told you. These details mean so much to the bereaved.

04. When in doubt, send food. When my friends are going through hard things, I like to send a meal, or an Uber gift card for a meal, because even if I have nothing material to offer that can assuage the pain or stress, I know that having one less thing to think about helps.

05. “Let me think about that.” I lean on this all the time when I’m being asked for something on the spot — a favor, a high-stakes answer, etc. You can and should buy yourself time to collect your thoughts.

06. An apology asks for nothing. I keep this top of my mind when making and accepting an apology. A true apology has no strings attached and makes no demands of the recipient.

07. Using a password saver like 1Password avoids an entire world of trouble and headaches. Once you get over the fear of forgetting the master password, you can log into anything from anywhere, securely share passwords with family members, and keep your financial and personal data safe.

08. Dress for the weather. Cold feet or wet clothing can sabotage the best laid plans.

09. In a public speaking setting, focus on delivering your first sentence as slowly and calmly as possible. Make that your specific and primary objective. If you can get through the first line with confidence, it sets the tone for the remainder.

10. Say I love you to the people you love as often as you can.

11. If you’re feeling out of sorts, get outside, drink a lot of water, and go to bed early. I swear that these three things resolve most of my anxieties.

12. When estimating how much booze to buy for an event, the rule of thumb: guests usually have two drinks the first hour and one drink each subsequent hour.

13. Show up early. Round up when estimating how much time it will take to park, get inside, find the room. Use Google Maps “Departing at” / “Arriving at” function to get a realistic view as to the transit time at a particular time of day.

14. Overestimate how much time you’ll need when paying a parking meter. I’d rather lose a dollar than spend a meal stressed about getting back to the car.

15. The iPhone “notes” and “reminders” apps are hidden gems. You can use the reminders app to create and share shopping lists, to-do lists, and more with a spouse and you can both dynamically add and check them off. You can also assign to people and add due dates. The reminders app even has a function where it will auto-sort your grocery list by category — e.g., dairy, meat, frozen foods! In the “notes” app, tap the camera icon in a note in order to scan documents and even text (!). The scanning is helpful if you need to upload a signed document for school, work, medical offices, contracts of various kinds — and the scanning text is SO helpful if you have a phone number, code, tracking number, etc on a piece of paper and want to quickly convert it to text on your phone.

16. Don’t be afraid to ask a lot of questions. In every situation! This is a great trait as a conversationalist; it ensures you understand what’s happening at the doctor’s office, in the meeting room, within the parent-teacher conference, and it will put your mind at rest later.

17. Related: keep a list of questions to ask the doctor. Even the small things that randomly occur to you. True as a parent, too — write down any observations and hand off to the pediatrician!

18. When you are thinking about someone, let him or her know. Send a quick note or email or text — “thinking of you…remember when…?”

19. Invest time in getting to know your neighbors. These are not only the people who will bring in your trash cans and mail when you’re out of town, run over to look after your children in an emergency, and lend you a cup of sugar, leaf blower, or what have you when you need it, but likely the folks you will see more often than anyone else in your day to day life. One of the greatest draws of our life in Bethesda is our vibrant and loving neighborhood.

20. Admit when you’re wrong, or don’t know. I spent way too much time in my younger years pretending to know the answer, or insisting I had the right answer when I clearly did not. Who cares?! As I get older, I respect people who know what they don’t know, and aren’t afraid to acknowledge it. Plus, people love to share what they do know — so just own it and let someone else step in.

21. Store peanut butter upside down in the fridge. This prevents it from separating (to some degree!)

22. Keep bananas separate from other fruits, especially avocados — bananas release a chemical that advances/expedites the ripening of fruits around them!

23. Potatoes should be kept in dark, cool places, or they will sprout and grow eyes.

24. My mom taught me this one: if you wake up in the middle of the night with an urgent to-do, open the drawer of your bedside table. You’ll wake up the next morning, wonder why it’s ajar, and remember the thing. I now principally use my notes function on my iPhone for this because my midnight “OMG, I can’t forget…!!” moments typically come in multiples, but this is a good hack for a specific thing you need to remember.

25. If you’re going somewhere and can’t forget to bring xyz (tickets, voucher, receipt, form), tuck the item inside your wallet or keys. You can’t leave home without those!

+I started using this SPF-infused primer again the minute it turned warm. It’s a fabulous first layer — adds glow and has a diving blurring effect, while also providing sun protection. Plays really nicely beneath other makeup / foundation / concealer, too. I also just got their new bronzer in and can’t wait to test.

+This collapsible bucket seems very handy for lots of implementations — cleaning, gardening, housework, soaking things, etc. My kids would also have a ball with it outside filled with water.
