Weekend Musing: Many Callings.
I don’t know what brought this to mind earlier this week, but I was reflecting on a conversation I had earlier this year with a girlfriend who said she felt she hadn’t found “her calling” in life. At the time, I listened, and told her not to put so much pressure on herself, but I’ve felt ever since that I hadn’t really supported her. While walking Tilly the other day, I thought of her, and I thought to myself: “Maybe there’s no one calling per life anyway.” Maybe we have lots of littler ones. And maybe a calling is an obligation in disguise, or something we do without thinking about it. Like, say, care-giving for an elderly parent (I see you B.K.!) or being the mom whose house is always open and whose car is always full (I can think of several in my daughter’s class). Maybe “a calling” doesn’t have to mean a semi-spiritual quasi-creative journey, although I would argue that the two examples I just gave are close to godliness in my book, and both require elements of creative thinking and spirit, too. I am thinking, too, of how there are many things that each of us do with ease that other people find incredibly difficult. What are those things? Do you always give the best toasts at weddings and gatherings? Do people turn to you for career advice? Are you the mom whom others lean on for a second opinion? Do you connect lots of people? All of these things, I believe, are kindling for callings.

I bought them as a back-up for our primary bedroom and they’re honestly nearly as good as some of our much more expensive ones. Soft, hold up well in wash. They don’t have the embroidery / designs / details of higher end brands but great staples.

Hi Devon! That one shocked me too — I couldn’t wear those heels either, despite how gorgeous they are! At this point, I’m a 3″ max kind of girl. I do think platform styles (not like the ones in this roundup) are easier to walk in even when they have a higher heel. I have a few pairs of those that I find actually comfortable.

Ha, reassuring I’m not the only one. I’ve finally given up my lifetime toxic habit of buying shoes I can’t walk in, and settled on <3 inch. More power to the women who can wear higher, though! Happy holidays (again)!

I love this. Growing up Catholic and attending Catholic School for longer than planned and also now working in a Catholic uni, I am very familiar with vocation. I myself have often asked this year since being back at my uni where I spent my years from 18-21(turned 22 the day I graduated) if this is my vocation. I was advised to pay attention to the areas which bring me joy. To really think and discern and decipher and pray/meditate. And to also be thankful and to know my strengths. It isn’t easy but journaling helps.
Your posts always seem to align with my life. And a daily reminder of the humans who also share space in earth are just as human as me. I appreciate yoir writing!
