Under-$200 Fall Staples to Order Now (While on Sale / in Stock) —

By: Jen Shoop

Today, a shortlist of items that are either bound to sell through or temporarily marked down thanks to Labor Day promotions, all of which are magically under $200, and very much in the vein of the look I dog-eared above from the latest Marine Layer catalog. (Can’t resist a reference to one of my favorite line from “Best in Show,” delivered by the one and only Parker Posey: “We’re so lucky to have been raised amongst catalogues.” IYKYK.) Anyhow, for fall, we’re talking sporty-academic-prep-redux-undone with a distinctive 90s throwback flair. Think dark denim, track pants, collegiate stripes, maybe even a flared leg…! (The Marine Layer model’s epic head to toe look: these track pants, this rugby polo, this denim barn jacket, and the styling is elite — Ray Bans and brown suede loafers with socks, another boomeranging trend that I’ve been noticing cropping up a lot this fall, including in the styling of this windbreaker outfit mentioned below.)

All my favorite on-trend pieces to grab now below —

01. This tie-necked sweater. I love the red or neutral. Apparently so does the Internet; at time of writing this, it’s in 2000 people’s baskets! Use code LABOR for 20% off. (N.B. that I’ve been noticing a lot of tie-front shirts and sweaters this season — including this TWP and this Madewell, both also under $200!)

02. Target released a pair of $35 taffeta pants that are super similar to the viral Donni ones and they are flying. (Other options somewhere between the two price points: these Rag + Bones, these Chan Luus, or these Reformations. BTW, do you follow Yasmine on Insta? She styled the Reformation pair with aplomb and now I think I need a pair, too!

03. Bandana scarf! I just found a great look for less for the Guest in Residence ones for $68! (Compare with these.). Or if you’re more into the Kujten look, try this $54 style from Evereve.

04. THE Rhoback mockneck sweatshirt was just restocked in all sizes! Trust me, the best. Your BFF for all things fall. Perfect length over bike shorts / leggings (cover the rear) and insanely cozy.

05. Low profile sneakers. I’ve been yapping about these for weeks but the Oncept ones are so chic and even more deeply discounted today (selected colors as low as $63). The pair that has currently captured my imagination are these Sandros in the chocolate color! OMG! I love the double laces situation — very Miu Miu. Currently deeply discounted and right at the $200 mark.

06. Dark rinse denim. Feel like a bit of a broken record here, but snag these while 40% off or these while 60% off! Your future self will thank you!

07. Becky Malinsky just wrote about windbreakers as a key trend for this season and I’m crushing on this cherry red style, currently 40% off and $106. It’s a great look for less for the SoldOut one that, well, sold out seemingly overnight.

08. Academic stripes. These are everywhere this season, from The Great to Prada, and especially in blue and chocolate color combos! I snagged this Tuckernuck. Also love this WNU with the vintage-feeling ribbed cuffs!

09. Related: rugby sweaters! My top pick remains the Alex Mill in a great cotton-cashmere blend, but the splurge option is Guest in Residence and my budget pick is Quince!

10. Another broken record moment, but this $134 bandana motif wrap cardigan is everything and was just restocked after selling out. A great look for less for Alanui.

11. Track pants! They are everywhere this season too; I covered the trend here. I just got the Marine Layer catalog and am loving the way they style these fleece and these cotton blend ones with daywear! Also just got my paws on a pair of the new Rhoback Aspire track pants and they are, predictably, perfect. Great fit and feel.

12. Chinos — back in stock and at a mysteriously lower price point (I paid $128 / they’re now $88). These Buck Masons also nail the look.

Final Few Hours to Shop Labor Day Promos!

All my top finds here. Top sale sellers yesterday: THE foot rescue cream (just restocked and currently 20% off) and these J. Crew jeans.

And a reminder that this Goop belted sweater, which I’ve never seen so deeply discounted, is 30% off through tonight! Comes in three great basic colors and can be styled infinity ways. A nice lightweight to wear year-round. I like it worn with nothing beneath (as seen below) with a skirt or jeans but also looks fab unbelted with a tee or tank beneath. Can also work over white denim shorts in summer! Just so good. Soft against skin (despite being 100% wool) and every detail is perfection. Gwyneth also spotlit this piece and showed lots of other styling ideas here.
