Today, I am thinking of Wendell Berry’s “How to Be a Poet” (reprinted in full below), of his modest, almost anchorite, instruction:
“Make a place to sit down. Sit down. Be quiet.”
“Shun electric wire. Communicate slowly.”
and
“Accept what comes from silence. Make the best you can of it.”
I am struck equally by the humility and truth of these offerings. Fascinating, how sometimes the magical — the creative, the godly — springs right out of the pragmatic. The flower that blossoms between the pavement cracks: the unfussy amount of sun and water it takes to bloom. How sometimes very complex things can be solved with the simple. Drink water; sleep eight hours. Make a place to sit and be quiet. Write it down. Box breathing. “Almost everything will work again if you unplug it for a few minutes, including you” (Anne La Mott). Make a habit of standing in the morning air, even if only for a few minutes, before starting the day. Will this matter in a month? (A year? ). The homespun cures and queries that, against all odds, work.
This week’s energy: simplify. Go to bed early with the windows open and the rain coming down. Read a hard copy book; eat whatever’s in season. Let the inessential roll away like yarn.
Onward!
