Slow-Release Gifts.

By: Jen Shoop

There are some things in life that are not worth waiting for — the apology, the winning lottery ticket, “the right time” to have kids or start a business or build a habit, any sort of line that leads you to a mediocre bar or club, a tiger to change its stripes, anything deus ex machina-oriented.

But there are other things that are worth holding out hope for: treasures that develop and reveal themselves over time. Slow-release gifts.

Things that are worth the wait —

+Skill in any pursuit that matters to you (Lordy, don’t the wheels turn slow);

+Walk signs;

+The wisdom and bone-deep confidence that comes with age;

+Truly ripe fruit (don’t dig into the unyielding peach — let it temper for a few days on the counter);

+The tree you planted a few years ago;

+The month of June (and the deep breath, drip-drop, hazy-in-the-hammock feeling of summer);

+The next Ann Patchett book*;

+Motherhood, in every sense (the wait to get pregnant, the wait to deliver the baby, the many kinds of waiting parenthood demands of us on a daily basis);

+The next bloom;

+The risotto (it will tell you when it’s done);

+Your children — let them become on their own timetables, with no comparison games;

+Dawn, with its fresh-slate reassurance;

+Love. The real, criteria-less kind that receives you as you are and holds your hand in the hospital room and leaves the light on for you in ways literal and not.

What else would you add?

Post-Scripts.

*T.G. the next one comes out on June 2! I think this will be our June book club pick.

+On letting go of old friendships.

+Things I miss about my childhood home.

+The plum you’re going to eat next summer

Shopping Break.

+OK, this just-launched caftan is a showstopper. Stunning. Family portrait contender!

+Kilte is running a mem day sale — up to 50% off! My top rec: this sweater in the kiwi color. It is SUCH a good fit and such a fab color. Looks amazing paired with everything, trust me. Navy, pink, red, blue — it’s such a fun and unexpected contrast.

+Love this white eyelet set from Marea with strappy brown leather sandals. While you’re there, did you see this just-launched sailboat sweater?! So cute! A great look for less for the one from The Great.

+The greens in this kitchen runner are fab. (Note that Ruggable is offering up to 20% off for MDW — this Annika style in the soft taupe — Ralph Lauren vibes! — was a top seller among Magpies earlier this year and it’s now 20% off.)

+25% off everything at Boden, including the Magpie favorite Arabella dress. All my Boden favorites from the season here.

+One of my all-time favorite tops for summer was just restocked in red and white gingham. SO CUTE tucked into denim or white shorts, or a white skirt!

+My aunt has one of these hanging chairs in her backyard and it is so dreamy. Just sit and drift and take in the season, or enjoy a little solo reading time, or call your mother from it. It’s currently 40% off!!!

+Your space-loving son needs these sheets. I’ve written about this bedding brand a few times but it’s my go-to for guest and children bedding — not crazy expensive but seriously good quality, and they have such great prints. Not too cheesy, not too grown-up. Like how cute are these on crisp white bunk beds with a classic quilt?!

+If you have a little lady, would you order her this adorable bubble for the FOJ?! It’s too, too cute. Then hand it down to a little cousin. I have to say, I look lovingly at all the photos of my babies dressed up in smocking and ribbons and tiny rompers on my Aura digital frame every day and I have zero regrets. While you’re there, LE is running a factory sale with lots of goodies: this adorable bubble, these crochet motif playsuits (I had so many of these for my kids — a great gift, too), and the sweetest scalloped collar dress.

+Sezane partnered with Parisian print maison Inoui to release a truly fabulous capsule of gorgeous patterns: I love this wrap skirt (more wrap skirts!), these shell print pants (with or without the matching top), and this gorgeous shirtdress.

+Dana Rebecca just added her entire sale section to be eligible for the 19% off promotion! I shared this earlier this week, but I absolutely love these crossover huggies and wear them constantly. They’re lightweight and petite but offer a little sparkle and polish. I reach for them any time I don’t have time to “style” my look and just want simple, everyday ease. These would be a great milestone gift for yourself — promotion, moving, big accomplishment, marathon! — as you’ll wear them constantly. Currently almost 20% off. This delicate bezel necklace is another favorite. Pretty rare you can find fine jewelry at a discount!

Inoui Editions is a household favorite!! I have their tiger blanket on my couch (you see the same tiger in the miniskirt in the sezane collab), a photo of it on my frame TV, and I just gave my SIL a scarf from their Parisian collab with the Louvre, which gives major Dior vibes for less. I’ve also gifted their canvas shoppers and beach towels!
