+YOU CAN’T FIX WHAT YOU HAVEN’T WRITTEN: Amen to this from author Lisa See! I’m impressed with her 1,000-words-a-day benchmark. I can’t say I have such a lofty accomplishment in my daily diary, but I do share her determination to set pen to paper daily. Writing is a practice! This notion applies to life, of course, too. (So often, when we talk about writing, we’re really talking about living.). You can’t fix something without releasing version 1.0!

+ANN PATCHETT AT THE MET: I mean, how absolutely charming to see Ann in one of the most important settings in Whistler?!
+NORDIES SALE MUST-HAVE: The Nordstrom Sale opens to everyone today — advising you to snag one of these perfect crossbody saddle bags in a fun color while still in stock! These have been the far-and-away best seller from the sale among Magpies so far this year. Runner up: this VB eyeliner set. Any other great recs/finds? I also love this cropped trench…
+WHILE WE’RE TALKING SALES…Over at Marine Layer, up to 50% off great basics like this pointelle tank (similar to mine — love this as a summer base layer) and one of my absolute favorite sweatshirts (I actually just packed this for Norway). Super soft and a great, slightly shrunken fit — but not TOO shrunken. I mean, how perfect?! I love everything about this look:

And! Marea’s is still ongoing and they keep adding new styles. This white eyelet skirt is perfect and ultra-versatile.
+ON LOVING A DOG: The sweet simplicity of this poem just nails it.

+FOUR EASY PIECES FOR END-OF-SUMMER CHICNESS: A couple of viral-potential pieces on my radar that collectively create a very chic look.

AQUAZZURA FLATS // MIRTH PANTS // MATTEAU TEE // KUJTEN SCARF
First: I think these under $200 linen pants are going to be a new “it” pant, a la Donni’s taffeta and Ruti’s barrel leg. Looks so fetchingly easy and comfortable and comes in several fab colors.
Second: a classic red-and-white Breton stripe. Matteau’s is a very IYKYK type brand with a fashion-forward shape. You can get similar vibes for less here (on sale! — really like that raised neckline), here, here.
Third: one of these deeply-trending bandana scarves! Grab one from Guest in Residence while you can (these are rarely ever in stock) or treat yourself to cool Parisian brand Kujten.
Finally: gold huaraches! THE shoe of summer. Upgrade pick: these spectacular Aquazzuras.

KUJTEN BANDANA SCARF // GUEST IN RESDIDENCE BANDANA (HIGH SELL OUT RISK) // MIRTH LINEN PANTS // NISOLO HUARACHES // MATTEAU BRETON, SPRWMN STRIPE, KULE STRIPE // AQUAZZURA HUARACHES
+AN INTERVIEW WITH YOURS TRULY: On the heels of my podcast with Jennifer Cash a few weeks ago, she published an interview with me on her Substack, where I talk all about how to get out of writer’s block, where I’d like to write on sabbatical, and the books I loved as a girl. She mentioned that she would be spotlighting an independent bookstore in each installment of her newsletter, and I was so delighted that she ended up spotlighting my local book shop, Wonderland Books here in Bethesda, which is where we shop for books as a family and also the host of my launch party event the day Small Wonders came into the world.
Related to all of this: my Dad sent me the following email after my podcast came out:

Sharing not to crow, but to say — even at 42, you’re not too old to love being praised by a parent! It’s one of those deeply good and simple delights in life. And I just feel so lucky that my parents continue to demonstrate such profound support and encouragement for me and my work. They’ve set a high bar for me as a mother.
Last note on Small Wonders, independent bookstores, and tiny victories, I was completely tickled to discover (five weeks late…) that a charming small book shop in Santa Barbara, CA listed Small Wonders as a “Staff Pick“! Chaucer’s Books, this may well be one of the greatest honors of my life. If/when I’m out your way, I will be making a bee-line for you!
+ON GLEN POWELL’S APPEAL: This reel made me LOL: “He looks like he compliments other men’s lawns. He looks like he changes air filters without being asked to change air filters.” But there is something dead-on about the analysis! I loved Glen’s response (“Josh…you make me want to be a better man…here to change your air filter or back up your trailer anytime!!!”) and the consensus among women that “men changing air filters unprompted is hot.”
+LOW STOCK ALERT: A bunch of my favorite pieces from SoldOut are running low, including my taupe tank dress, which I packed for London. It’s like wearing a tank top and calling it a day — the skirt barely touches the body. So light and easy. These are my top four recs from the brand. Use code JENSHOOP for 15% off sitewide.

+BESTSELLERS: THE athletic dress took the lead — so excited for you to get your paws on this! You’ll live in it during these hot late-summer days! — but it was really a tale of two everyday dresses this week: we’re all alternating between the Rhoback and this easy smocked scoopneck, which I’ve dubbed “the Dakota Johnson dress” just because I feel like it’s exactly what she’d wear and slay in for a backyard BBQ. This tee dress was also a topseller, so I think we’re all in the mood for easy everyday dresses to pull on and go!
