Jen’s Weekend Drafts: Let’s Be Here for the Bounty.

By: Jen Shoop

+BOUNTY: This poem by Gabrielle Calvocoressi struck me this week, as we head into Thanksgiving, especially the opening: “No Poems Today / Because you’re here. There’s warm / bread to be eaten. With cheese and jam,” and the later lines: “But come on. / Let’s be here for the bounty. I can / still imagine years of possibility / ahead of us.” The words reminded me to pluck myself (in a good way) out of my writerly headspace and into the front seat of my car, where I am listening to my son tell me about his school day in sweet little chirps and hiccups of recollection. And to really hold my daughter at night before bed. She is eight — so mature in some ways but still my baby needing the hand squeeze and the big bear hug. “No [work] today / because you’re here.”

+SALES, SALES, SALES! The good deals keep coming. I found the Dyson blow dryer on sale for even less than here and ordered it! A couple of new deals that launched yesterday/today:

+25% off at Freda Salvador — their biggest sale of the year. These waterproof boots are a wardrobe staple this season. I have them in the classic brown but really love that mink color too.

+20% off my favorite concealer ever (no code needed). This stuff is magical. Does not settle into fine lines and has a great consistency — not too thick, not too thin.

+Kilte knit sets for travel / holiday at home — mentioned this sale earlier this week, but these sets are $200 off in select colors; the gray is so chic! I own this set in blue. It’s gorgeous — a nice, heavy knit. I’d advise going up a size if you’re between sizes! This is perfect for a ski trip / travel car day / etc.

+Stakt mat (20% off) — so niche but I really love this mat in our home gym. Slightly cushioned for my old bones and folds up tidily / can be used in lieu of a yoga block. I am thinking of giving one to my Dad and/or sister for Christmas because I love it so much. They also sell these as sets with their adjustable weights — good for my city-dwelling Magpies!

+Faherty (up to 50% off) — this is a great place to shop for the brothers / brothers-in-law / uncles / elder boy cousins that you aren’t really sure what to get. Why are these plaid overshirts so handsome on any age, any man? Is it my 90s self speaking? I love them. And if you’re shopping for multiple men, get each a different pattern – this is what my mom does every year for all the men in our family. I just picked up one of these henleys for Mr. Magpie, too. Of course it’s the one item on the entire Internet not on sale (my toxic trait). But as you know, I find a henley one of the chicest items on a man or woman.

My best finds, organized by category:

MY FAVORITE WHITE TEE EVER // BEST BRAS – WEAR EVERYDAY // SWEATPANT-MATERIAL WIDE LEG JEANS (USE CODE SHOPMY15 ON TOP OF DISCOUNT) // MY FAVORITE UTILITY PANTS (RUN TTS) // A CLASSIC BALLET FLAT IN AN ON-TREND PRINT // PERFECT TRAVEL DAY LOOK ($200 OFF) // BEST WATERPROOF BOOTS // MY FAVORITE CARDIGAN (20% OFF WITH VIP2025)

HATCH RESTORE // P-TIOX ANTI-WRINKLE SERUM* // CADENCE CAPSULES // DYSON HAIR DRYER // HEATED PAD // SARAH CREAL CONCEALER // STAKT MAT // ZIIP HALO (USE CODE SHOOP) // NATURA BISSE MASK (I LOVE THIS – USE IT AS A CLEANSER FOR A SQUEAKY CLEAN RESET FEELING) // WEIGHTED VEST // BIODANCE MASK

*Some of my neighborhood friends were chatting skincare and there are several devotees of this “botox in a bottle.” (up to 30% depending on spend off!) I have been using for several months now and love it, too. People also love their CE Ferulic Acid – I just got a bottle to test! Meanwhile, Dr. Diamond Metacine is included in the Dermstore sale! I really like their plasma. I use it in lieu of a serum when I have it. Right now I’ve been using the Vintner’s Daughter botanical serum for several months straight and am happy but will mix it up with Diamond when I find it on sale!

ROTHYS CLOGS (30% OFF) // SPINDLE BED // OUR BEDROOM RUG // KITCHEN RUNNER // PINECONE WREATH // HALF PAST SEVEN HURRICANES // KIDS SHERPA CHAIR // KIDS SPINDLE PLAY TABLE // SKYLIGHT FAMILY CALENDAR*

*Deeply intrigued by this touch-screen digital chore chart — a friend of mine had it in her home and it was such a clever way to keep all the kids chores viewable and easy to monitor! We’ve been using paper to track “independence charts” in our home the past few weeks. The kids get points for doing these various things we expect them to do, and if they accrue a certain number of points collectively, they can redeem them for a family activity/treat/outing. This Skylight seems to be a more efficient solution as we’re constantly moving their paper trackers around!

+BRANCH ART: I could watch this guy arrange branches all day?! Gorgeous! Also loved his JFK Jr coded outfit. His feed reminds me that cut flowers are not the only nature to bring into your home! Branches, leaves, fruit! It’s all art. I’m inspired!

+WHAT WE’RE READING: OK, Lily King’s Heart the Lover gripped and gutted me. I couldn’t put it down! I can’t remember the last time I tore through a book so quickly; I read it in three sittings. I cannot wait to discuss this as next month’s book club pick. Next up: everyone (including my mom) seems to be buzzing about The Correspondent by Virginia Evans. What else are we reading right now?

+BESTSELLERS: This pinecone wreath, deeply discounted! Buy now and you’ll never need to buy a new fresh wreath again in your life. I bought this last year! And this puffer was very popular again.

01. WREATH // 02. PUFFER // 03. OUR NEW BEDROOM RUG! // 04. RAG + BONE SWEATPANT JEANS (USE CODE JEN15) // 05. COZY SOCKS // 06. PLAID PUFFER (IN MY CLOSET) // 07. $12 SKIING JAMMIES // 08. CORD LADY JACKET // 09. WOOL CHORE JACKET // 10. WOOL PLAID JACKET

I might be the only one, but I was a little flat on Heart the Lover (probably a me thing because it contains one of my pet peeve plot points, I did think it was beautifully written and well-characterized). I LOVED The Correspondent. It brought me to tears several times, but it wasn’t tragedy porn, it was life. Such a special book. I loved the centering of an older woman as the main character, who was allowed to be fully complex and nuanced.

I am waiting to post until the bookclub comments because I don’t want to spoil it for anyone who hasn’t read it yet! Haha, but I will comment then!!

I finished Heart the Lover over a month ago and I still have a book hangover. My favorite read of the year. But my second favorite was The Correspondent – highly recommend on audio!

I finished Heart the Lover late last night. If I tell you there’s an ache in my body the size of a continent it is not an exaggeration. Your book club might need some time for a good cry! I’m grateful you chose this book for us to read. Beautiful writing!
