Jen’s Weekend Drafts: Unexpected Tears + The Enduring Chicness of Too Many Books.

By: Jen Shoop

+AUTISM AWARENESS VIDEO: I was moved to tears this week by the Artemis crew and by this video of an NFL analyst bringing his son onto ESPN for Autism Awareness Day. There is so much beauty and hope and emotional maturity in that video — even in the way, when the analyst tries to gather himself at the end by redirecting the conversation to sports, the other anchor replies: “No, we’re not going to do that” and insists on the tender hearted.

+THE ENDURING CHICNESS OF TOO MANY BOOKS: Amen. This is a perfect companion image to my “Things I Find Randomly Chic: Home Edition” list. (“Stacks of books in various postures of use and discard.”) What does your TBR pile look like right now? I was just thinking I need more bookshelves in our primary bedroom, as I now have stacks on every surface…

+WENDELL BERRY ON JOY: One such book: Wendell Berry’s Front Porch. I love this poem I read this week about the (good) confusion of joy — the way it blurs the lines between whats ours and what belongs to our loved ones. “In his joy, he knows no difference.” I also love the way he terms the poems “Sabbath poems.” Puts you right in a specific frame of mind.

+LIST POETRY WORKSHOP WITH YOURS TRULY: Speaking of poems, reminder that I’m leading a virtual list poetry workshop (over Zoom) with my friends at LitSociety on Monday, 4/20! You can snag a ticket here. I know a few of you have signed up and can’t wait to see you there! You don’t need to be a writer or a poet to join — you don’t even have to believe you’re creative (but I’ll convince you that you are!) — and I won’t require you to share anything if it’s not your cup of tea. We’ll do some close readings, some creativity exercises, and work on a firstling draft of a list poem.

+SHOPPING MISCELLANY:

+This week, I picked up this scarf-print top (!) to tuck into a smart pair of white jeans as well as these overalls from Mother in one of my favorite denim silhouettes ever!

+Donni’s viral taffeta pants were made available for pre-order in three great colors here. Thoughts on styling them here. If those are too loud, try the (magical) Ruti pants, which — at time of writing this post — were still on sale.

+I wrote about these chic reverse fleece sweatshirts (big Mick/Stevie energy IMO) a few weeks ago and landed on the pink color. They also have them available in kids’ sizes for an adorable matching moment. Perfect if you’re not a Lilly Pulitzer / Hill House type but still want to twin with your mini me.

+Wore these Lizzie Fortunato earrings in the mist color almost every day this week. They just work. They look so cool with a t-shirt and jeans but are just as comfortable/at home with a cocktail dress. Love a piece of jewelry that can go either way. Also – these look heavy but they’re not!

+ThirdLove is sending me one of their bestselling t-shirt bras. I can’t wait to try, and they come in such fun summer colors (mist! lake! soft pink!). I love having a undergarments in pretty colors — a secret joy! (This is also why I love that Negative sells its INCREDIBLE whipped boyshorts — the only thing I will sleep in — in the prettiest color combos. Trust me: buy the three-pack and you’ll never look back. It is THE BEST UNDERWEAR.)

+A FLOWER FARM IN MD: This photo of flower farm M&M Plants here in Maryland stopped in my tracks. Hydrangea you could sleep in!

+JEN’S NEST OF WONDERS: Next week is THE LAUNCH of Small Wonders! Reminder you can pre-order here so you have it on pub day (4/14!) or attend one of the events here if you’re in DC or NYC (the Charleston event sold out!). Fun addition: Proper Topper, where I’ll host a NW DC event on 4/23, invited me to curate one of its thoughtful gift baskets and labeled it “Jen’s Nest of Wonders.” A really chic assortment of treasures for a writer, reader, bird-lover. Basically I made it for us — lol.

+BESTSELLERS: This polo-collar fitness dress led the pack! Athletic dress season is upon us. I love to wear these for walks around the neighborhood, hanging out at home on a Saturday, and golf, too — on the odd occasion I get out there. The color, fit, and silhouette on this one are excellent.
