“Wow – I’m so proud of him, too”
“OMG are you serious?! You absolutely did the right thing”
“My gut says using the word training bra would be mortifying for them – maybe just ‘undershirt’?”
“Same same same”
“Checking in! How did he react?”
“Those traits will serve her well in the long run, but it’s tough now”
“Are you surviving Maycember?”
“Maybe you should ask the teacher?”
“We had a similar situation last year—”
“I bought a huge flat of them at Costco! I’ll drop someoff for you after school”
“Has she tried Roald Dahl yet?”
“Literally, no worries; I was driving there anyway”
“You are such an incredible mother”
“I heard from the other moms that you don’t really need to buy the uniform shorts”
“Let it all out. I’m here for you.”
Post-Scripts.
This post is dedicated to all moms heading into the back-to-school frenzy! Sending love and solidarity. I am just a tiny bit to maximum bit overwhelmed by what our calendar looks like starting September 1st. Orientations, back to school mornings/nights, parent meetings, first practices and games for sports…! I know we will get into a rhythm but it’s a lot. So remember to text your mama friends and let them know you’re in this together!
This post is also excerpted/adapted from my book, Small Wonders! Just a litttttle extra reminder that the book makes a sweet little gift for a mom friend, especially if you add a sticky note to this page. It’s only $13 on Amazon which is basically like sending a fancy greeting card — LOL — but this one has some extra mileage.
At my event at Politics and Prose, I read an adaptation of this piece, titled “Reteaching a Thing Its Loveliness.” I was surprised to find myself — and several Magpies — crying. Afterward, a few of us talked about how it made us feel something about early motherhood.
And on that front: a letter to a new mom.
Shopping Break.
+Marea restocked its bestselling wrap sweater! Run, this will disappear…
+New Julia Amory markdowns, including my favorite eyelet dress (now under $200) as well as two of my favorite caftans: this one (I own in the tobacco color) and this chic chartreuse. Finally, this patterned longline jacket would be chic for events at school paired with kick flare jeans and flats! (See if my code JEN-15 stacks on top!)
+Really have my heart set on a rugby for fall. I love the cashmere blend ones I mentioned at Alex Mill, but now I’m also eyeing this boxy Tuckernuck. The colors are perfect. Other picks I’m contemplating: this chocolate brown SoldOut and this neutral Buck Mason. Great look for less at Quince.
+While you’re at Quince: how fab is this double-faced wool bomber jacket?!
+Love the idea of pairing one of the aforementioned rugbys with leggings and cool sneaks in the mornings, and then for day, pairing with ecru jeans (and layering that bomber over top?!)
+All my favorite dressy sneakers for fall here. I’m fixated on this new brand, Oncept, and found a cool pair in chocolate suede on sale here!
+Julia Amory just restocked her best-selling tuxedo button-down.
+Rhoback just launched knitwear!
+Daydreaming about adding an Hermes wallet to my purse…
+Is this not the most fun lamp?! Love all the patterns available, especially the fern.
+Pinch me, but Jimmy Choo (!!!) invited me to select a bag from their fall collection and I immediately gravitated towards their cinch in the medium tan suede. It is beyond divine. I love the elongated length — sort of a modified East-West shape, the luxe chestnut brown suede, and the gorgeous gold hardware. I will be wearing this all season long! She’s stunning. This is in my guide to fall bags here!
+Fall skincare loading: recovery cream for cooler weather and a face wash that purports to act as a double cleanser in one! Intrigued by the latter. My evening is currently a double wash / two-step process. (I really love this creamy cleanser from Wonder Valley right now.)
+This popular golf dress was just restocked in a great hydrangea blue. Calling all my links ladies! You can absolutely wear into fall with a brown knit over top!
+This VV dress is so cute! Very Julia Amory coded in a perfect pre-fall color.
+Niche, but back when I tripped and split my forehead open (!), the plastic surgeon I consulted with encouraged me to use products with silicone to help reduce the appearance of the scar over time. Prequel has a great scar stick formulated with 60% silicone. I was thinking I wish I had known about this after my two c-sections…! Apparently can also be used post-blemish to help with skin repair/recovery. And if you only knew how many scraped knees and ankles and elbows we’ve seen in this household this summer, you’d also know why I’m adding this to the medicine cabinet now! Their most popular item is their gleanser (glycolic acid cleanser), but my personal favorite is their foot cream, which is sadly out of stock! Just signed up for restocks myself. This is essential for sandal season but also the cold, dry months.
+These are insanely splurgey (you’ve been warned!) — but have you see the spectacular sweaters from Suzie Kondi?! Swooning over this stripe and these hand-knit cashmere crewnecks. Loved just perusing all her new arrivals and seeing how she mixes and matches fabrics in the styling. She works with her own color palette, doesn’t she?! That sunshine yellow!
