September Song —

By: Jen Shoop

We are burrowing into our full fall selves. Our soles are dragging wet leaves into the house, as though the season can’t help but find us wherever we are. We are listening to moody Laufey and Lucy Dacus by candle. We are wearing tartan and cashmere that carry the scent of last year’s perfume; we are thinking about yesterdays. We are smelling like rain and wood and hearth and pine. We are re-reading Rebecca and Catcher in the Rye, sneaking a thyme-flecked potato straight from the hot kiss of the skillet, brewing dark tea at odd hours. Meanwhile, the light is leaving us, along with the searching south-bound birds and the leaves that recently hung in the waning sun. Just yesterday, the sun called us to the day; now we must find our own ways of waking up. But we know that — in nature, as in life — the cold becomes the crucible: here, in the quiet and bare, we light the wick ourselves.

DOEN SERAPHINE DRESS

Post-Scripts.

+Alt titles for September (many of these are Magpie-reader-supplied! some very funny).

+Remembering I carry all the versions of my daughter inside.

+So much of motherhood is being a joyful witness.

+Fall books to read.

Shopping Break.

+Above, I’m wearing the Doen Seraphine dress! They were generous enough to send me one for launch day. All my favorites from yesterday’s fall drop here. This dress is magic. The flutter sleeves, the narrow bodice, the featherweight fabric! This is a perfect dress for layering beneath a knit for a fall soiree or even for wearing to the Thanksgiving table.

+I’ve had a lot of messages about my Guest in Residence cashmere fringed sweater (tucked under my arm above) — it is SO good, layers over everything, and works with jeans or cocktail dresses. It was already sold out in the XS when I ordered so I took the small; it’s pretty oversized on me but I don’t mind since I’m wearing mainly as a jacket/top layer and it works over other knits now! Anyway, sizes are very limited now, but a Magpie reader wrote to share a FAB look for less from Maje! Maje is also selling a more cropped version in ivory here, also on sale (for under $160!), which I just snapped up. How cute with light-wash denim and a tee? LOVE this fringe trend.

+Tuckernuck is also selling a fun fringed jacket that sort of merges my Guest in Residence knit with my felted Veronica Beard cropped jacket.

+A GREAT solution for traveling with necklaces.

+At home, I like leaving my most-worn jewelry in little pretty dishes like these.

+Another great fall/winter tartan cocktail dress here — I loveeee this silhouette.

+Chiccccc collared dress! A great look for less option for this VB.

+Dorsey just launched some gorgeous drop earrings to wear with everything. Imagine it laid against a dreamy gray cashmere sweater.

+Speaing of that gray cashmere sweater: Jenni Kayne is offering up to 40% off select styles here. Don’t miss their iconic Cooper cardigan (at a rare 30% off — I’ve seen it for 20-25% off but not 30!), this yummy cashmere crewneck in a moody, salty blue, and a cotton cardi you’ll wear with everything.

+You can get the Cooper cardi look for less with this!

+Three gorgeous gowns for fall black tie events: this copper Acler (under $300), this foulard print J. Crew, and this splurgier caped style from Simkhai in the most spectacular shade of green.

+Fall earrings I’m obsessing over.

+Speaking of jewelry, my friend Grace Atwood just launched a beautiful gemstone necklace with Hart Jewelry. The colors are perfect!

+It is officially reading-under-blankets-on-the-porch weather! Reminder that our code for Chappywrap blankets expires at the end of this month — use JEN15 for 15% off. I have been using this one.
