My Favorite Fall Pants + Jeans for Petites

A big ol’ guide to the best petite-friendly jeans and pants for this season. I’m sitting here wearing the Rag + Bone Sofies I’ve been raving about for weeks now — they’re still 25% off — and they are jusssst divine. (I’m about to record a podcast and I paired them with a beautiful pink cashmere sweatshirt — looks polished but actually feels like pajamas, both on top and bottom. Lol.) They are actually a sweatpant material but look like jeans. A note on these: I find the black pair (seen below) needed no hemming but the light blue sweatpant material ones pool just a tad on the floor for me when barefoot (I’m 5’0). This does not bother me because I am almost always wearing them at home with these Rothys (which afford a little height), but just a heads up.

01. Sofie ankle wide-leg jeans. My long-time favorite pair of jeans. Just so, so flattering, leg-lenghening, etc, and I love the stretch in these jeans. Comfortable but slightly body contouring? (Run TTS — any of the Sofie ankles are perfection; also own and adore these aforementioned sweatpant jean variation.) Both are 25% off!!!!

02. The Ruti on the loose pants (duhhh!). The drape is amazing; they make you look so lean and long! Take the petite inseam; I take my true size but do find these run a tiny tiny bit snug, so maybe size up if you’re in doubt. I own these in black, leopard, tan, and coffee. The navy might be next. 03. These curved utility pants. Incredibly flattering on the leg and I like that they are a nice loose fit but still offer shape. The drawstring is functional! Would love these in all the colors; I have in brown, white, and classic army green. Take your true size in these and use code JS15.

04. Basically the entire Mother Denim Petites (they call the line “Lil”) collection, but especially the ones with the twisted seam down the side. I also just got a pair of this black-rinse style and they look BOMB on: Lil rambler zip sneak jeans — I take my true size in almost all of their jeans, although I go up a size in their white denim.

05. Beloved cropped colby pants. Beyondddd delighted that they offer these in a cropped length now so we don’t need to take them to the tailor. These are elegant and a little more polished than a utility or Ruti pant, but still super comfortable. I also find these very flattering on — I always feel like I look really lean in them. I take the XS in these; I don’t size down! Typically, I do size down in this brand, but not on these pants — I prefer the looser fit. (Use code MAGPIE10.)

06. Chic barrel-leg silhouette — not marketed as for petites but trust me, I’m 5’0 and these FIT PERFECTLY and are really designed for a petite frame; a great alt to the Nili Lotan Shons. They run TTS.

07. Slim straight-leg pants — take your larger size for a slouchier fit, but also look great TTS; these are sort of a “sisterhood of the traveling pants” kind of jean that somehow look good on tall Magpies and us petites! I absolutely LIVED IN THESE the last few winters; a great everyday jean.

08. I can’t recommend these enough. The cool mom pant of fall. I took a S — they didn’t have XS when I ordered! — and find they are a bit big in the small but not overly so / don’t mind the extra roominess. These do hit at the top of the foot, FYI, so not as cropped as they look on the model. I can still wear without hemming though. Try code EXTRACRISPY.

09. Penny high rise wide leg jean — i go up one size in these — it’s a very stretchy, body-contouring material and prefer a little extra give. Use code JS15.

10. Fabulous affordable option — I ordered these and fully anticipated I’d return because I have so many pairs of designer jeans to choose from but the FIT ON THESE IS AMAZING. Take your true size.

11. Madewell darted barrel leg. These are a great barrel jean for fellow shorties — the “barrel” isn’t TOO exaggerated and the shape works so well.

12. Wide-leg corduroys — I have always, always had good luck with Gap’s “High Stride Wide Legs” in the petite inseam; I’ve owned in many washes, colors, fabrics over the years. Run TTS.

13. These le slim palazzo pants are always on my recommendation list — wear more like full-length on us but the fit is divine on a petite frame. I believe these will still be 25% off at the time of this post’s publication. (I’ve been working on this one for awhile, gathering sizing notes and codes, so hopefully it’s still on!)

14. Moderate high-rise pair — in the petite inseam. Candid talk: I am somewhere between my true size and my larger size in these, which is maddening! I take my true size and find them just a little uncomfortable to, like, sit in all day long, but they do look insanely good on the leg! The larger size is too big though. I’d say test your true size and see how they work for you. I do think their denim is incredibly well-designed and good quality; they get softer with every wear. Like a pair of classic Levis!

15. Frame leather reboot crop — go up a size in these; again, these wear more like full-length on us but they look so, so chic with a suede pump! This was a big splurge last season but je les adore.

My Favorite Petite-friendly Athletic and Loungewear.

A lil bonus curation in case you’re looking for something more casual —

01. Vuori’s all the feels leggings in short are a gift straight from the clothing gods — no more awkward fabric bunching beneath the socks / at the ankles / at the crotch! I try to stay on top of their drops in hunt of new colors! These always sell through really quickly in cool new shades.

02. These cuff sweatpants hit perfectly at the ankle (in the 25″ inseam). I typically size down in this brand but take my true size in these pants.

03. Penny patch pocket sweatpants. These styles are SO good for petites.

My Favorite Petite-Friendly Tops.

And a few favorite petite-friendly tops. It sounds strange to talk about “tops” in terms of petites, but you know how some blouses, tees, etc just hit at weird or overlong lengths? Here are a few that seem tailor-made to petite dimensions:

01. This crewneck sweatshirt — the perfect shrunken fit to hug petite shoulders!

02. Have yet to find a tee shirt that beats this — ideal cut at sleeve, torso, etc. I can’t believe this works on taller magpies; it’s a truly snug, shrunken fit even on me.

03. Cashmere shrunken sweatshirt. I own this in several colors and absolutely love the snug fit. It really hugs a petite frame so nicely and I like that it adds no bulk / can be tucked into jeans!

04. I constantly wear this cardigan — the long, slim-fit ribbed cuffs really work on petite wrists!
