Jen’s Weekend Drafts: Nostalgia Is a Gift.

By: Jen Shoop

+NOSTALGIA IS A GIFT: I was so moved by this video of Jennifer Garner and her mother entering a recreated version of her childhood kitchen. It made me think of nostalgia in a new light — I mean, nostalgia isn’t necessarily a pleasant sensation for me. It’s a knot in the throat, a threat of tears, an awareness that things will never be a certain way again. But now I see it is well and truly the other side of childhood magic, which is almost always created by loving parents. Per Richard Dean: “All the Christmas magic I felt as a kid was really a mom who loved me.” (Aren’t we lucky to be children?)

+FAVORITE NEW WORDS: Any new words you’ve picked up this week that you’ve been desperate to trot out? Here’s your occasion; drop them in the comments. This week, I collected the word persiflage (n. – light and slightly contemptuous mockery or banter), so don’t be surprised to see it heralding itself in upcoming posts…

+A REMINDER I NEEDED TO HEAR: This week felt fractured — a thousand errands, a thousand chores, a thousand minute details to stay on top of. Typically, when I know I have an admin-dense week, I will schedule myself around it. I will mark off half-days to take care of my to-dos, clustering errands and chores together so that I can in turn settle in for longer stretches of “maker’s time” where I will not be interrupted. I know this about myself: I am prone to cantankerousness when I am unexpectedly unable to get a full work day in. If, by contrast, I plan to be preoccupied, I’m able to make peace and adjust my expectations for what can be accomplished. This week, though, I found myself sitting down at my desk later than usual, laden with last-minute and unplanned tasks. I surprised myself by accepting this on the nose. I told myself: “actually, you do have the time, and you’re exactly where you need to be.” Repeating that here in case you need the reminder during this busy week. You’re exactly where you need to be.

+ANOTHER REMINDER I NEEDED TO HEAR: How beautiful is this sentiment?! You are not a project! You are not a machine! You are a complex, beautiful, vacillating, irrational-because-of love soul!

+CHIC FOOD THINGS: My post about “food things I find randomly chic” took off on Instagram and I absolutely loved some of the additions made in the comments and via DM:

 Obsessing over medium rare

Waking up early to check the levain

Properly dressed and seasoned salads

Heavy on the ramps

“Can I pour you a glass of wine?”

Brown butter

Matchbooks from a restaurant

Copper pots

Its own poetry, isn’t it? “Waking early to check the levain” tells a full and round and deeply chic story!

+EYEING + BUYING:

+Love Rhode’s glazing milk so much (an RWI in my book) and just learned people are equally enthusiastic about their mist. Has anyone tried? The glazing milk is my favorite last step before applying cosmetics. Great primer.

+Mentioned this yesterday but how adorable is this book of mini exfoliating bars from Soft Services?! All the different limited edition scents. This is such a great and unique product. I love to use on my shoulders/decolletage before a night out — gives you this pearlescent, shiny skin!

+Alice Walk restocked their cotton sweater jacket, which had a waiting list a thousand people long! As you know, I’m fangirl no. 1 of Alice Walk and will probably end up ordering this, too. No one does an everyday knit like AW. Always so thoughtful with silhouette, material, design, and the quality is incredible. Note that you can still order for Christmas delivery if you upgrade to two-day shipping. My mom got all of us these wraps for Christmas, but if you’re in new to the brand, start with this or this! If I don’t share lots of photos of what I wore during the week, it’s because I’m wearing one of those two sweaters. They’re my most worn, reach-for-daily pieces.

+Another just-launched item from a brand I love: AYR’s new “locker” sweatshirt. I ordered this week! It looks perfect. Love that slightly high collar and the sleeve silhouette!

+How gorgeous is this under-$300 sequin maxi for NYE (also available in a cool forest green)? A dream to pair with my new earrings
