Jen’s Weekend Drafts: Anne of Avonlea Fall.

By: Jen Shoop

+IT’S ANNE OF GREEN GABLES SEASON: Loved this carousel of cheeky memes on our beloved Anne with an E. “I *am* glad to live in a world with Octobers.” (It’s a great time to re-listen to the Rachel McAdams-narrated audiobook of Anne of Green Gables!)

+FALL MOOD BOARDING: Pinning lots of fall hygge here. So relaxing to me, and often sparks new styling ideas. I love the simplicity of this navy cotton sweater with brown suede accents (seen top left below)…! Thinking of recreating with an under-$100 sweater like this or this.

+I’D TEAR A MAP AND BE RIGHT NEXT TO YOU: This poem struck me in the heart — something about the tactile map and the precise word and the way they both model things much bigger than they are.

+ENCOURAGEMENT FOR NEW MOMS: If you are a new mom in the weeds of sleeplessness, feeding the baby around the clock, feeling exhausted and alone at your 3 a.m. feed: something that often reassured me when I was in your shoes was imagining all the other mothers around my city awake and doing the exact same thing as I was. Like maybe just a building over, a mom was sitting upright in her bed, feeding her own two week old. This sounds a little “woo woo,” but I’d actually imagine sending out a positive energy to that mother; it made me feel connected to a broader mosaic of motherhood. I recently read that there is an order of cloistered Catholic nuns (the Norbertines) who wake at midnight each night and pray for an hour straight for mothers dealing with the difficulties and exhaustion of motherhood. So if you’re up tonight and feeling as though you’re the only person awake in the entire world, know that the Norbertine sisters are holding you in their prayer, and probably right when you need it most. I also wanted to spotlight an incredible organization I learned about called Lily of the Valley ministry, which puts together prayer packages for women experiencing infertility or pregnancy or infant loss. I was so touched by this organization; these women nurture others through times of incredible emotional duress. I wrote recently about the time a nail technician massaged my feet just after I’d suffered a miscarriage, and how I burst into hot, fat tears at the outsized goodness and gentleness of this simple act. She had no idea how much I needed that kindness. I’m bookmarking this organization both as one to support financially and as one to direct others to when needed.

+BAROQUE MOOD BOOST: I loved this snippet of a woman bopping to classical music in her car. It made me laugh because Landon and I listen to WETA classical every morning while the kids are getting ready for school, eating breakfast, etc, and we absolutely hate when Linda Carducci oversamples baroque-era music — LOL. The harpsichord is one of my least favorite sounds. But I got her drift — sometimes a big classical overture can give you unexpected energy!

+EYEING + BUYING: I wrote in exclamation points about this exfoliating bar from Soft Services earlier this week and was delighted a bunch of you ordered — I just know you will love it! It leaves you with THE most lustrous skin.

While we’re talking beauty and skincare: Origins just launched its 25% off Friends and Family promotion. I have been a longtime (like, decades-long) fan of their charcoal mask. It hardens up on your skin and when you wash off with warm water, it leaves the softest, cleanest skin. I love the sensory experience, too, of feeling the mask harden on top of my skin. I actually usually use this on my forehead / t-zone / nose and then use the Clarins depuffing mask (currently 15% off + free ship) from my undereyes down to my neck. I feel like it’s the perfect combo: extracts, cleanses, purifies the areas more prone to blemishes, and the Clarins stuff depuffs the rest! Also on sale at Origins: my mom is a big fan of their brightening eye cream (I think a few Magpies are also huge fans), and this checks and balances face wash looks like a great pic for a Mr. Magpie in need of a new skin cleanser.

On the clothing front: it’s cord season baby! I wore these straight legs from Frame (go up a size) and these Pistolas (very petite friendly – take your true size) while away in rural PA this week, and wanted to share a few other fab pairs: these Paiges (I know a lot of Magpies LOVE the Anessa silhouette), these Anthros, and these VBs.

Meanwhile, this wool plaid tote is giving Rue de Verneuil but at about half the price, and this Sezane sweater jacket is in my cart. And I had three separate text exchanges with friends soliciting my input on which color Hollyhock belt to get after my belt edit post went live! I vote for the espresso suede with gold hardware. (Chef’s kiss!)

+BESTSELLERS: The bestseller this week was this chic blue gemstone necklace from a Magpie reader’s brand, marked down to under $50! I have been layering it with my usual gold stack and love the look. Also popular this week: chicest denim shirtdress! A lot of you purchased this dress; I may need to follow suit. She’s gorgeous.
