First: I did a holiday music Peloton spin yesterday and it was delightful. Cannot rec more — not the hardest workout, but really put me into a holiday mood and reminded me that exercise can actually be fun?
Second: What are we wearing to work out this winter? Sharing a little roundup of some of my favorite things below, with detailed annotations beneath, too —
ED NOTE – Updated this post after publication because Rhone just emailed us a 25% off code (!!!) — use code JEN25. (If you missed out on ordering your husband one of their DreamState lounge sets, this is a good chance to get it at a discount. Landon has a few of these in different combos / colors and they are so handsome on him! We call them his “retired athlete outfits.” Lol. My top rec for a combo: these joggers with this q-zip.)

PERFORMANCE HAT // BOSE OPEN EARBUDS // TRACKSMITH BRIGHTON BASE LAYER // BEST INEXPENSIVE RUNNING GLOVES // RHONE LEGGINGS (USE CODE JEN25) // NIKE METCONS // SKIDA NECK GAITER // STAKT MAT // BOMBAS RUNNING SOCKS
My current favorites: the Vuori all the feels leggings and matching bras (seen above, alongside my favorite everyday tote). These come in short lengths but you have to, like, SPRINT to get them in the short length in new colors. These are some of the only marketing emails I actually open – ha! My sister turned me onto these leggings when I visited her in Boston earlier this year; I don’t know how I’d not tried them. They are SO soft and flattering but don’t make you feel constricted at all. Sort of like a Lululemon Align but maybe a little more contouring. I love love them. These are the first ones I pull out of the clean laundry bin. My other current favorites are the Rhone Revive leggings (use code JEN25 for 25% off). I feel like we don’t talk enough about Rhone! Amazingly well-made. Really comfortable and a little more performance-y than the Vuori.
If I’m spinning, I layer a thin performance top like the Lulu swiftly tech or Rhone featherweight rib long sleeve over top (I also have this ancient Gap performance long sleeve that is an earlier generation version of this that I wear like 1x a week — can’t explain how it has lasted so long but I do love it) and I often peel it off halfway through my ride. Then I always carry a big fluffy sweatshirt down with me because after I cool down and stretch, I am usually shivering in my sweat. I love this Rhoback one and this Left on Friday one because they’re easy to pull on, slouchy, and cozy, and they make me feel chic/cool for reasons I can’t parse.
If I’m running in cold weather, I MUST wear the Tracksmith Brighton. Non-negotiable. Soft and cozy and warm but also somehow breathable. I don’t understand the technology but it’s brilliant. I then layer a half-zip and a vest over top. I really love running with a vest — it’s my top tip for keeping warm without drowning in sweat. Mine is a very old New Balance. I don’t know why they don’t make more running gear; some of my favorite running items are NB, but they only release the tiniest collections and quantities. OG Magpies might remember their “magic jacket” from circa 2018. I still wear this running as my “mid-layer” / half-zip. It had this incredible “heat loft” technology (I think that’s what it was called?) and was thin and breathable but also insulating. Brilliant. Anyway, I trust them implicitly and just ordered one of these heat-grid half zips and I’m sure I’ll be obsessed with that, too.
There don’t appear to be any current season NB running vests, but others I’d contemplate if you’re in the market: this Lululemon, this Brooks, and this unisex style from Bandit Running.
A running friend of mine also turned me onto neck gaiters for truly cold weather. Her philosophy (which I also now embrace) is covering every square inch of exposed skin. She recommended the ones from female-owned business Skida and I love mine. I also swear by these cheap running gloves. I’ve somehow had the exact same pair for eight years and they continue to live on despite heavy use and laundering. Finally, I wear a normal running hat (performance material) year-round, but I will add inexpensive earmuffs over top. I prefer these to the headband style — I feel like those slide into my line of sight too much, and I also find it easy to just slip the earmuffs down to my neck and they don’t bother me much if I get too hot.
Still loving my Brooks Glycerins for running (a Magpie reader rec!) and my Nike Metcons for gym / strength-training (great ankle support). And I am a total convert to the Bombas running socks (<< writing this, just discovered a new three pack colorway and think I need them, too). Love the way they hug my foot, and the colors are joyful.
Finally, in terms of gear, have to have my Stakt mat (try code TAKE10 for $10 off) for strength training and core, my Bose open earbuds ($100 off) for running, and my habit tracker for satisfyingly “x-ing” off the days I work out.
And may I also recommend running to our Wuthering Heights playlist (on Spotify here and Apple here)? You will feel like a dark and powerful heroine on a journey. It is SO fun and howly and witchy, and there are some great beats in there!
OK, spill – what are your favorite winter fitness essentials?

I run in South Dakota in the winter unless it is below 10 degrees F. The musts for me are waterproof trail running shoes, which help with traction on snow and ice and with keeping my feet dry in those conditions, and merino wool socks. Truly a game changer!
Wow!!! Hats off to you!! Brand rec for the trail running shoes? xx
I love Hokas or Salomons.
Thank you! x
I live in Minnesota and run outside year round (my lower limit is -10 F). I swear by Craft jackets in the winter, but especially those that cover the butt. Anywhere you hold more fat will get colder more quickly, and for me, that’s my bum! Also, mittens > gloves while running when it gets really cold — your fingers will help each other stay warm!
Oh interesting on the mittens! Will look into this!
xx
I just purchased these Athlete leggings. https://athleta.gap.com/browse/product.do?pid=769155012&vid=1&tid=atpl000086&kwid=1&ap=7&ds_agid=22314961672-&gclsrc=aw.ds&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=22314975253&gbraid=0AAAAAD_AT8uvE2nymX4SEBfQyf4z_BzA7&gclid=Cj0KCQiA_8TJBhDNARIsAPX5qxQdNzSg4D27n0E7ttCFqPOfvh2hT4i_jKvtONjFDsBCNj2Q2pwMcJkaAuCQEALw_wcB
Hope they’re ok.
Love the look of these!
Does anyone have recs for a winter puffer/fleece to wear to and from the gym? I’m looking for something very washing machine friendly! I just hate wearing my nice puffer to the gym and then putting it on post sweat – ugh.
What about one of the Quince ones? Machine washable and not as spendy —

xx
Thank you, I will take a look! Quince definitely has the right price point, especially for something like this!
Yes! I got the Pippa Packable Puffer from Free People on Poshmark (so many Ps lol!) and find it’s perfect to throw on when I head to the gym. It’s perfect post-workout, too, because it doesn’t get too sweaty since it’s an oversized fit and doesn’t cling to the body. 🙂
Thanks for sharing this rec! x
Thank you Gillian! I’ve been wondering about this one – sounds like it’s worth giving it a try!
Magpies, has anyone tried the quince leggings? Would love a report!
I have not!! Would also love to hear!

I spent YEARS trying to find truly warm winter (sub-30 degree) running tights- the usual “fleece lined” ones don’t quite cut it for me, even with merino long underwear layered underneath. I finally found them last year: Title Nine’s Crash tights. They are SUPER thick- you will not feel especially sleek in them- but they are the only things I wear to run when it’s 15-30 degrees. They also now make some looser legged styles in the same fabric, but I’m loyal to the tights. I know looser pants are more in fashion these days, but when it comes to staying warm in the winter, you really do need to have things tight to the skin to eliminate the opportunity for cold air to snake in.
Oo thank you, Anna!!
