Baselayers + Underpinnings.

I’m due for a refresh in the base layer and underpinnings category. A few items I’m eyeing or am already loving for layering beneath sweaters and cool Euro-vibes coats a la the chic pea above this winter (BTW, I am totally contemplating a pair of Converse sneaks thanks to her!):

THIS J. CREW HENLEY

LOVE THE CUT OF AYR’S HANGOUT TEE — LOOKS LIKE A SLIGHTLY DRESSIER VERSION OF THIS OUTDOOR VOICES STYLE I LOVE AND WOULD BE PERFECT WITH THESE JEANS

SKIMS TEE

SPLENDID’S CREWNECK TEE — SLIM FIT AND PERFECT BENEATH A THICK SWEATER (IN LOVE WITH THEIR NEW FROSTING PINK STRIPE) OR FLEECE

OLD NAVY’S LS THERMALS ARE WORKHORSES — GREAT FOR LAYERING BENEATH SNOW GEAR, WEARING TO BED, ETC

INTO THE SLIGHTLY SOPHISTICATED NECKLINE OF THIS GAP TEE, AND THIS FEATHERWEIGHT VARIATION (ALSO FROM GAP) PROMISES TO BE NON-BULKY

THIS LONG-SLEEVED SLIM TEE FROM THE GREAT — LOVE THE CUFFS AND MATERIAL LOOKS WONDERFULLY LIGHTWEIGHT

THIS MANGO

EVERLANE WAFFLE HENLEYS

VELVET TEE

For underpinnings, still sticking with all my long-time favorites here but recently came across well-reviewed lingerie brand Negative and picked up a few of their styles, too! I also often get the question of what to wear beneath a nap dress and I go sans but have heard from all but one Magpie that this Skims style is PERFECT beneath. (It’s what Nellie Diamond suggests, too.)

My big question for you: what brands do you love for basic black non-athletic-looking leggings? I rarely wear this look so I usually just put on my Aligns if I’m going casual, but I also exercise in those so I always feel very dressed down in them. A few styles that seem like a better fit for pairing with sweaters

THESE FROM MADEWELL

WOLFORD

SKIMS

P.S. Chic cold weather accessories and outerwear.

P.P.S. Crisp basics.

P.P.P.S. Imprints of a new lifestyle.

  1. I’ve been pleasantly surprised by the quality of the Ponte-knit leggings from Loft. They’re opaque, and pre-Covid I was ok wearing them to work beneath a blazer and button-up. I found that they held up well between airplane – office – drinks and were substantial, but not too constrictive. Definitely too warm past March in TX, but great for cooler climates.

  2. In the slim pants/ponte pants/non-athletic leggings category – you may find Ann Mashburn has what you need. If you haven’t been to the Georgetown store in awhile, it’s well worth a visit! Was there last weekend stocking up on some great staples, including two pairs of their Faye pants, which are dreamy (and come in a legging version!).

  3. Also the Celine purse above (all the heart eyes). I just got the Celine classic teen bag in brown and it is gorgeous.

  4. My suggestion for a “non workout legging pant” is American Giant’s No BS Pant.

Recent discoverer of your blog and very much enjoy it, especially the “everyday contemplation” your inspire in me.

    1. Thank you so much, Dena! Welcome!! So happy you are here. Thanks for the tip on AG — had not heard of this brand! Looking into them immediately!

      xx

  5. The pants you are looking for are the J Crew Pixie pants! Loyal wearer for a decade; have re-bought and re-re-bought, etc!

    1. I’m going to try these again! I tried on a pair years ago and felt they didn’t work for me but now I’m wondering if they were just the wrong size / if I need petites. Thanks!!
