13 Welcome Inconveniences.

By: Jen Shoop

On Tuesday morning, it was 58 degrees when I left for my run. I found myself in a state of near-euphoria: it was perfect, crisp running weather, the kind that has you believing you might be able to run an extra mile. After a hot shower, I pulled on my favorite wool-cashmere blend sweater and realized it had pilled along the underside of the arms and my summer self had left the chore for my future fall self. I hunted for my sweater razor for a good twenty minutes. As I did, I realized: this is a welcome inconvenience; it’s a harbinger of fall.

I’ve written on this theme before, about reframing tiny disruptions as auspicious signs of good things happening. 13 other “welcome inconveniences” along these lines:

+Having to replace running shoes because the treads are low (proof of effort!)

+Staying up until two a.m. because you can’t put your book down;

+Selling out of something you’ve made;

+Losing track of time while talking to a good friend;

+Discovering you’re the bottleneck and that you need to hire someone instead;

+Being told to “keep it down” because you’re laughing too loudly;

+Internet trolls (you know you’ve made it when…);

+Feedback – always a gift;

+A messy kitchen counter – evidence of a full, thriving household;

+Problems you’ve invented just to spend time with someone you like (was thinking about this while I waited in the postal office queue this week; the postal office employee and the customer seemed to know one another and were swapping tips about feeding their cats medicine! The employee kept prolonging the conversation and — even though I just wanted to get in and out — I have to say I found the exchange charming);

+Running late because you waited for your child to do something on his own;

+Releasing a version 2.0 that addresses earlier-model flaws;

+Anything you love that takes up more space or time than the world wants to make for it

Post-Scripts.

+On the note of “staying up until 2 a.m.” — I am totally hook-line-sinker obsessed with the Emma Lion series and have been staying up reading the volumes the last few nights. What an utter and total delight. Going to be sharing more of what’s on my fall reading list soon, but this MUST make it to your nightstand. Available on Kindle Unlimited!

+Which reframes have you found most helpful?

+Some reframes I’ve found insanely impactful.

Shopping Break.

+Cadets fall items (which have been on a pre-order status for weeks!) are now available for immediate shipping, including THE poplin pants and this cute rollneck I just ordered in the marigold color. Use code EXTRACRISPY for discount.

+Found a full run of my favorite chocolate brown utility pants (the paracord drawstring is such a fun detail) here! These have been selling out at Pistola, but all sizes in stock there. More here! Run TTS. They also have them in petite on Pistola’s site but I own pairs in both lengths. Obviously petite is better for us shorties but I just cuff the full-length ones with one roll and they still look super cute.

+Finally got my paws on some of this Armani eye shadow people go crazy over. My bestie has been singing its praises for years but it’s oddly hard to find in stock!

+While you’re there, I’m super intrigued by Diptyque’s new “nightfall” candle. (“A relaxing scent blending the soft, rounded floral notes of chamomile with herbaceous sage, enveloped in the woody warmth of cedar. Adorned with an illustration of an ancient bathing scene at nightfall.”)

+Other great fall candles to burn: Aspen (cedarwood/smoke/pine), Fog (apple/mist/oak), Leather Appointment (leather/citrus/smoke). Hotel Lobby has a new scent coming out next Tuesday, too — Texas! (Leather/whiskey/sagebrush.)

+New Alice Walk launching today! These cashmere cardigans are my absolute absolute favorite. I’m also already getting a ton of wear out of this cotton weekender cardi, which is a perfect summer-to-fall piece.

+Target score: this jacket and the matching pants are giving Varley vibes for a fraction of the price.

+Cool new fall sets from Lake: this for day, this for lounge.

+This makeup brush is SO GOOD. I use it every day almost at the exclusion of any other brush. It had a 58,000 person waitlist at one point! And the hype is warranted. The fuller side is perfect for powders and the tighter side is ideal for blending foundation, concealer, gel/cream bronzers and blushes! A perfect match for my new Ogee sticks!

+In case you also need one

+Freda just launched a gorgeous campaign for their fall collection shot by their talented creative director Ben Christenson. I’m telling you, the Brooke boot is a fall-to-winter hero piece. It’s water-resistant, works with skirts or denim, keeps you warm, and is super comfortable. These sell out every year. Use code MAGPIE10. Also love these cool calf-hair flats! Western continues to trend!

+The It sneaker in the new walnut color is amazing for fall. Imagine with brown leggings and a red fleece. This is the pair/colorway I have but LOVE that new walnut. (BTW, I keep getting DMs about styling these sneakers with daywear — see here for some cute and approachable inspo from one of my favorite Joyful Follows!).

+Another fab SEA jacket. They really nail this category every year! Related: my post on statement fleeces influenced me to order this one!

+Just discovered that Rothy’s released our favorite fall-winter clog in a leopard. SO GOOD.

+Cute earrings for girls: these screwback pearls (other styles available, just love the screwback!) and any of the fun designs from Pip Pop Post — one of my go-to gifts for girls with pierced ears!

I love the version 2.0 — at my first read-through, I was thinking of this in terms of self, also; shedding former worries or frustrations as we age and realize what is truly important!

I’m eagerly awaiting my library hold for Emma M Lion #3! Highly recommend on audio.

I just finished reading The Midnight Train by Matt Haig, also recommended if you, like me, are a sucker for a time travel story (The Midnight Library is also v good)! But a line brought to mind some favorite Magpie themes, like how we contain all the ages of our children. Thought you would appreciate!

“There were days in life that rolled by and were never really thought of again. And then there were days that were so beloved or important that they contained inside them everything that came after. Russian doll days that were always inside the expanding future.”

Have you read the NYT profile on Beth Brower in which she states that she has 25 Emma Lion books planned?! I had been trying to savor the 8 existing books, thinking they were the complete Emma Lion universe. What a delight to discover there are many more to come!! https://www.nytimes.com/2026/07/29/books/review/beth-brower-unselected-journals-of-emma-m-lion.html?unlocked_article_code=1.AFE.xezV.Lp3MU2HH7DGH&smid=url-share

I’m also reading/listening to the Emma M Lion books and enjoying them so much! I usually prefer reading fiction over audiobooks, but at the strong recommendation of a few friends, I started listening to the audiobooks (available with Spotify Premium!) and they are a delight. The narrator does different voices/accents for each character and her tone is perfect. Halfway through volume 3 now and finding myself happily doing chores because it gives me an excuse to listen more.
