What are your kids wearing this winter season? (I loved all your interesting responses to my question, ‘What are your kids into these days?’ and thought this might yield interesting conversation as well.) The main insight and unlock for me the past few years: Emory likes to wear exactly what I like to wear. I’d initially felt lost when she started to refuse to wear the smocked dresses and floral leggings and Cienta t-straps of her younger days, and we went through a wilderness in which she and I both hated everything I was finding. Then a reader pointed out that it seemed like she liked to wear what I liked to wear. The greatest key. Now I just hunt for things I would wear, or small versions of my own wardrobe. She loves a chunky knit, a good stripe tee, a pair of wide-leg jeans. She’s a mini magpie after all! I actually just realized Rothy’s has kids’-sized clogs and…hello! I have to order her a pair. I know she’s going to flip having the same pair I do! Just trying to decide which color/pattern…drawn to the daisy but the red feels more realistic (while still fun)?

My girls love anything bedazzled, glittery, characters, pink, purple, and as many accessories as I will allow for school. They are always disappointed that my wardrobe trends towards neutrals and business casual. I do miss dressing them in little preppy or unisex outfits, but these days I usually just defer to what they want to wear. They are funny though, every once in a while I will buy a dress or shirt I assume they will like and I will get a flat “no” from them, with little explanation, They are very decided in their tastes. I was surprised that it started very early, like at age 2.5 for both of them when they started having strong opinions about clothing.
I love this note: “they are very decided in their tastes.” Emory is the same way! She can really startle me with a quick no.

My son is very formal! He likes a collared polo, a striped sweater over it, and the Zara comfy suit pants. He prefers neutrals like his mama, with pops of red, and wears the same Kizik black sneakers I do. He hates getting dirty or stained. He likes to match. My daughter likes pink more than anything, and the darling dresses from Mi Canesu or the Ralph Lauren polo dresses. Openwork knit tights from Condor. Matching tee and short sets in the summer. Her older brother’s tees as nightgowns. I rarely wrangle her into a sweater. Her favorite outfit is a pink tee printed with red hearts, matching sweater, and wide leg pink pants with heart pockets, worn with red heart sunglasses. I do her hair into two little buns.
Each kid has a puffer jacket, but my daughter loves to be fancy with a coat from monsoon and the Super Smalls pink gloves with the jeweled rings all over them.
I love these mini portraits of your children, laced through with the sweetest love and admiration. Especially this image: “Her older brother’s tees as nightgowns.” And the two tiny hair buns and openwork knit tights — beyond! iconic!
