What I Loved Wearing This Week: November 3, 2023.

By: Jen Shoop

You’ll notice a lot of repeat elements this week. I have not taken these new Dorsey Margaux earrings off since the Dorsey team sent them my way. They’re marketed as a statement earring but I have worn them everyday and love the way they add elegance/polish to any outfit. The scale is not as intimidating or overstated as I’d anticipated — I’d thought I might cosset them away for my holiday evening attire — and instead have been delighted to find they work for any occasion, from daytime to night. You’ll see them in many of the photos below. The other item I’ve been wearing nonstop (at the other end of the dressiness spectrum) are my Ugg Tazz slippers (more sizes here and here), which finally arrived. They are dreamy-cozy and I love that I can wear them outdoors for quick dog walks / runs to the postbox / pick-up or drop-off, but also have been sitting at my desk wearing them all the livelong day. Just fun hygge! These run the tiniest bit small. I took my true size (a 5 – I have pixie feet) and they still work great but might be challenging to style with heavier gauge socks.

  1. One thing I admire about you is that your wear your “good clothes” and don’t save them. Maybe it was growing up poor and so I knew if I ruined something I could not buy more…now I prob. could but old habits die hard and I need to be better about enjoying the clothes that I love.

  2. So here’s a style question…I am absolutely stumped about what kind of everyday boots to wear with these new looser styles of jeans. 99% of styling for them shows the wearer with flats/loafers, which just isn’t going to fly in NYC during winter. I need full foot/ankle coverage! It’s cold! What’s also not going to fly is anything with a real heel (like more than 1/2 inches- see again, NYC living.) In the past it was so easy to just tuck skinny jeans into pretty much any boot, but now I need to come up with a new boot paradigm that is both comfortable/functional and flattering. Thoughts?

    1. I hear you! Will collect styling inspo and share in an upcoming Ask Magpie but I think a key is wearing a pointed or tapered toe boot — something that doesn’t look super-clunky. Stay tuned…!

      xx

    2. SAME! Chicago winters with kids and a work commute, but same same same. I think maybe I don’t understand shoes anymore? Are knee high boots still ok with black tights, do they need to have a high heel? The youth at work wear voluminous pants with pretty flats and an enormous sweater, but how does a mid-thirties mom do that in the winter too? Help jen!

      1. I so relate – I also struggled with styling certain newer footwear styles (lugsole chelsea boots, dressy sneakers!) for like two years. I will share thoughts soon!!

        xx

      2. +1 on the jeans + boots styling! I love my straight cut/kick flare jeans, but also unsure on the shoe situation in the fall/winter. I find that without the bare ankle, the overall look on my body type (petite, more curvy on the bottom than the top) is… stumpy, for lack of a better word. It seems like a lot of the styling I see that combine the straight jeans/kick flares + booties so well are on tall and leggy women.

    3. Me three! I’m in Michigan and my uniform is typically a cropped flare or straight jean with sneakers/loafers with a bare ankle but at this time of year the bare ankle is starting to be too cold! It seems like my Chelsea boots always hit right at the hem of my cropped jeans, which doesn’t seem quite right? But I spent a small fortune on the boots so they’re here to stay!

      1. So the only way I’ve found to style these jeans with boots is with a flat chelsea boot. The shaft of mine goes high enough that the jeans sit nicely over the top and the shape isn’t changed. I don’t have the cowboy boot thing in me (I live in New Zealand, it’s a whole different world down here!) but I know they’re fashionable in the northern hemisphere currently and I wonder how they would work.
