What Are Your Autumn Breakfast Favorites?

By: Jen Shoop

I’ve been doing a bit more baking recently — easy things, like muffins and banana bread, and even those cheat pumpkin rolls from Immaculate Baking that you buy in a can from Whole Foods (seen above) — and am feeling inspired to expand the fall repertoire, especially in the breakfast category. There is something uniquely comforting about a homemade, warm, cinnamon-stewed something-or-other first thing in the fall morning, when the sky is still-dark at dawn. Doesn’t it make you feel cared-for? A simple, private morning ministry.

Some specific recipes on my mind:

+Marion Cunningham’s overnight yeasted waffles (these are outrageously good, with complex and tangy depth-of-flavor, and will change your perspective on waffles if you’re not historically a fan; I’ve been making them for years);

+Apple and cinnamon baked oatmeal (my son loves the Quaker Oats apple-cinnamon packets; this will blow his mind);

+Pumpkin sheet pan pancakes;

+Cinnamon sugar scones;

+Cinnamon overnight oats;

+Pumpkin bread with maple glaze (already made this! candidly, this is not the most complex-tasting bread, but it has a nice, moist crumb, a good pumpkin flavor, and my kids were obsessed with the glaze! Most importantly, I had everything in my pantry/larder to make it on a whim);

+My favorite fall banana bread.

Please share what you’re making and loving, or what’s on your shortlist!

The Daily Scout.

First, a spotlight on my favorite cozy morning sweater to throw on over absolutely anything — the La Ligne Marin, now available in four perfect colors (I have the gray — use code MAGPIE10) — and four ultra-cozy morning shoes. What I love about all four pairs is that they can be worn for a quick dash outside, for carpool, etc — they aren’t strictly indoor shoes:

UGG QUILL SLIPPERS (NOTE THE GRIPPY SOLES)

SEAVEES WATERPROOF CLOGS — A MAGPIE READER FIND! LOVE THE HERITAGE STRIPE PULL TAG AT THE HEEL

ROTHYS CLOGS — OF COURSE! THESE ARE 25% OFF THIS WEEK!!!

MOU CAMPFIRE SLIPPERS — THE WHIPSTITCH TRIM!

The other two headlines:

1) This Madewell polo sweater is FLYING. We’re loving this as a perfect vibe-for-less for the spendier Alice Walk Getaway sweater. I styled it below — note that the bandana tote in the collage is $65 but currently 40% off.

2) 20% off Tatcha!!! Their dewy milk moisturizer is my absolute favorite for everyday moisture. It gives your skin this great bounce and luminosity, and it feels wonderful to put on — a great, gel-like consistency. Honestly, I think this is very reasonably priced relative to how it feels — could easily be sold for double and I’d think it worth it! I’m also HEAD OVER HEELS for this virtually invisible sunscreen. I carry this on my person. It’s always in my bag! Their rice cleanser is also phenomenal. BIG fan of this brand. A great time to re-up your morning skincare routine!

Now onto some fall kitchen morning hygge!

fall baking finds

BONE BROTH HOT COCOA // Trending among Magpies! This protein-packed cocoa powder can also be used in baking projects.

FARMHOUSE POTTERY SALT CELLAR // Insanely charmed by the font/aesthetic of this salt-keeper. (Also love this sweet mug with a wooly sheep painted on the side. Wool-gathering, indeed!)

EAST FORK ENAMEL MUG // Charming campfire vibes with the added benefit of being very kid- (and klutz-) friendly, as they are virtually indestructible. I own and love these.

GINGHAM OVEN MITTS // So charming!

CARAWAY COLORED MUFFIN TINS // Color adds joy. You can get a discount if buying a baking bundle, FYI.

GEOMETRY DISH TOWELS // The absolute best; I will not stop singing their praises! Highly-absorbent, gorgeous designs, hold up beautifully to infinite launderings, and have a low-profile that makes them easier to stow (with a small footprint!). They also just released charming holiday motifs; I love this alpine one and these cedar bows. Use code JEN for a discount.

FARMHOUSE POTTERY PIGLET HOT PAD // I mean, can you even? (Sheep motif also available.)

FELLOW ELECTRIC KETTLE // I just noticed these have sold out in a few colors. These would make such a great gift (for yourself, or a loved one), especially bundled with fancy tea from Mem Tea in Boston!

MOMA ENAMEL MILK PAN // For heating small quantities of milk for hot cocoa, oatmeal, etc! We have this similar one.

ROAN IRIS COPPER MEASURING CUPS // Utility gear chic enough to keep out on the counter! Also love these wood-and-metal measuring spoons, sharing a similar ethos.

IF ONLY IF NIGHTGOWN // This gingham one is giving me all the feels! Swoon! With some cozy socks! Don’t forget to throw on an apron, too. Hedley + Bennett make the best ones. I love this pinafore style, but Landon never cooks without this “essential” style in the handsome tobacco color.

COZIEST DESK / KITCHEN SWEATER // This cozy La Ligne is a forever favorite to throw on over nightgowns, pajamas, jeans and t-shirts, dresses…! Use code MAGPIE10.

Chia pudding has become my morning go-to! It’s so quick and easy to prepare the night before and have ready for breakfast. I’ve been getting creative with seasonal fruits like figs and plums, and this week I made a pumpkin pistachio version that was delicious! I make mine in Weck tulip jars. I love that it’s packed with fiber and nutrients, and keeps me full all morning! I also aim to eat a kiwi every day for an extra boost of vitamin C.

For a holiday morning treat, just ordered Eggnog Cashew & Pecan Butter from Big Spoon Roasters to have on homemade sourdough bread. So excited to try it!

I love fall baking! This is a favorite we usually make as muffins and dip in melted butter and cinnamon sugar for cider donut vibes (the key is lots of nutmeg): https://thewednesdaychef.com/2021/02/01/erin-jeanne-mcdowells-gluten-free-apple-butter-loaf-cake/
I also like this similar one: https://www.bonappetit.com/recipe/apple-cider-doughnut-loaf-cake

New to me are these sour cherry and walnut bars I’ve been eyeing: https://www.houseandgarden.co.uk/recipe/sour-cherry-walnut-bar
I make a plum and hazelnut version of a Bakewell tart every fall, and it’s very much made up on the fly. And a breakfast apple crisp is a signature move: toss sliced apples with cinnamon and lemon, and make a barely sweetened crumble in the food processor with oats and pecans (or walnuts or almonds) just blitzing the oats and nuts first to make sandy flour, cinnamon and turbinado sugar, butter or hazelnut oil, and then stir in a big handful of rolled oats. Squeeze into clusters as the topping and bake at 375 until everything toasts up and/or collapses.

Also, Marion Cunningham forever!! Most of my favorites as a kid were out of her Breakfast Book. I’m pretty sure that’s where we got the butter and cinnamon sugar trick, my dad used to make these mini muffins filled with currants from there.
