Weekend Vibes, Edition No. 191: Turtlenecks and Weirdness.

By: Jen Shoop

My Latest Snag: Turtlenecks.

I love a good turtleneck moment (I mean, can you even with Jackie’s Cartier wrist watch and houndstooth trousers?!), and can’t stop stocking up this season. I’ve ordered multiple tissue turtlenecks from J. Crew (the tartan!!!!), one of Everlane’s pima variations, and am absolutely lusting after a Wolford turtleneck bodysuit at the moment. However, I might go for Everlane’s $38 variation or Commando’s $98 style instead.

How many turtlenecks is too many turtlenecks?

You’re Sooooo Popular: The Lightweight Hoodie.

The most popular items on le blog this week:

+This lightweight hoodie. (Sung its praises — loudly — here.)

+This running jacket — on sale for 70% off (!) I bought it in ivory but it comes in a number of great colors and I am in love with it. I cannot believe how lightweight and breathable it is given how warm it keeps me, yet I’m never too hot in it. Frankly, I don’t get how it regulates the temperature but it does and I’m smitten.

+AirPods Pro. (Top seller for holiday gifts this year and currently still on sale!)

+The dreamiest tweed coat dress.

+This melamine dish set. (The chicest!)

+Classic duvet cover for a little one’s room.

+Janod DIY truck (great gift for children — has already sold out in select retailers).

+This gorgeous faux-leather dress.

+Amazing tree topper.

+My favorite yoga pants.

+Ooly paint sticks — keep selling out! My children (1.5 and 3.5 are obsessed with these and I also just sent some to my nephews!)

+Personalized floral banner for a child’s room.

+Cedar swag for the holidays.

Weekend Musings: What Makes You Weird?

The other day, I came across this quote from writer, producer, and film director Joss Whedon (brain behind Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Toy Story, and more):

“Whatever makes you weird is probably your greatest asset.”

I loved that. Some of my favorite qualities in my loved ones stem from their idiosyncrasies. I think, for example, of my older brother, who loved fantasy books (especially Redwall), constructed elaborate Lego worlds, wore a Zorro costume for months on end, and had an imaginary friend (named “Di”) when we were young. He was — and still is — fantastically creative and preternaturally able to grasp elements of character and narrative that are often lost on others. This has in turn led him to become an extraordinary writer, teacher, and academic — and one of the most astute judges of character I know.

What makes you weird?*

*I am anticipating that some of you may take issue with the term “weird” here — why must we “other” ourselves and our differences? I think Whedon is intentionally re-appropriating the word here.

Post-Scripts: The Wreath Serving Tray.

+This wreath serving tray is the perfect holiday cookie plate (and $15!)

+My evolving relationship with books.

+This accent cabinet sells out consistently. So cute (and such a great price!) for housing games in a family room or overflow serving plates in a dining room nook.

+A mom at my school wears this Arcteryx ski jacket on days with inclement weather and I have to say the hood design is genius. I think it’s specifically designed to work with a ski helmet but I am envious of the way it sort of juts out over the forehead, keeping it free from rain without an umbrella!

+In case you’re on the fence about a Dudley Stephens fleece (some divided opinions on the subject from Magpie commenters, though the majority seem very enthusiastic about them), this J. Crew terry turtleneck tunic situation is a lower pricepoint and achieves a similar vibe.

+Love this LL Bean hat for women! So fun for a sporty black and white look with your clog boots.

+This knit top turned my head as a way to transform mid-weight and even floral skirts into something seasonally-appropriate.

+These hair slides! Chic de la chic! Great way to dip your toe into the heavy chain microtrend.

+A serious love letter to my husband.

+This concrete table lamp (under $100) is striking.

+Pink, brocade, and bows…50% off…one left in my size. AHHHHHHH. Temptation island.

+When literature becomes a life raft.

+Great footwear for this season.

+Cute stocking stuffer for a tween/teen: personalized pencils.

+Mini is in love with these warm camp socks. She always asks for them!

  1. Big yes from me for turtlenecks! I bought a grey one 2 or 3 years ago and wore it occasionally, but last year I stocked up on black and navy and a deep hunter green and wore them frequently. They were perfect for my office – especially with the tartan skirts I inherited or under a plaid blazer. (Realizing I really like a solid turtleneck combined with plaid/tartan! Ha) There is no such thing as too many turtlenecks ๐Ÿ™‚

Going to have to mull over your musings on our weirdness. I fully agree with the sentiment, just not sure what my weird is. I wonder if itโ€™s easier to spot in other people rather than ourselves? Will let that thought percolate and see what I come up with…

    1. Love the turtleneck/plaid combo. Agreed, no such thing as too many turtlenecks!

I think you’re right on identifying/showcasing “weirdness” in yourself. I had a hard time coming up with anything, too. Easier to pinpoint in others!
