The Art of the Weekend.

By: Jen Shoop
"Eighty percent of everything that is true and beautiful can be experienced on any ten-minute walk." -Anne LaMott

What are your weekend rituals? Are you a pancakes and bacon family? Are you a rise-and-hike type? A no-alarms, gentle-rise person?

Our Saturdays have evolved from dog park visits and late lunches as newlyweds to 6 a.m. “get up and get out of the house ASAP” drills as parents to young children to, now, more of a free-form, legato “let’s see what the day holds?” energy. Landon and I often sleep in until eight these days (!); the children entertain themselves until one of them knocks on the door asking after breakfast. They can prepare cereal on their own, but they love toaster waffles on a Saturday morning, prepared to demanding specs: Hill likes butter and syrup; Emory asks for one with peanut butter and jelly and one with butter and cinnamon sugar. Once they’re settled and fed, Landon and I empty the dishwasher, make our morning smoothies, and then we usually play some sort of family game or undertake some family activity — we’ve recently been loving this game and doing a lot of coloring books (Emory got a Taylor Swift one for her birthday) and watercolor. Landon also bought Emory an online drawing class subscription for her birthday, and they’ve been taking it together, learning to draw hands and noses and other famously difficult-to-sketch phenomena. Then Landon and I usually abscond to play a round of Wingspan over coffee before tackling laundry and exercise, pausing to supervise an art project or shepherd the kids outdoors, and that usually brings us to lunch hour. Ideally, I’d love to spend more of these weekend mornings outside, but I know that will come with the spring thaw, when suddenly all the neighborhood kids emerge from winter hibernation to bicycle and race and draw with chalk in the roundabout in front of our home, and the adult neighbors congregate with mugs of coffee and slow conversation. I am thinking now of that quote from Anne Lamott: “Eighty percent of everything that is true and beautiful can be experienced on any ten-minute walk.” Never does this feel more accurate than on a warm May Saturday morning, when I remember that there are angels living on my block, the kind looking out for my children and planting flowers in the cul de sac garden bed, and I realize that the crepe myrtles and cherry blossoms that dot our street are just about the most beautiful art forms I’ve ever seen up close and personal.

Writing this out, I think how every phase is a good phase. The cozy winter board games; the neighborly spring exchanges in the driveway. The lazy lie-ins of our pre-kids era; the frenetic, staccato silliness of our baby years. Everything is a flow.

But what does your look like right now, in mid-March 2026? What do you love about it? What would you like to edit? How well does it map to who you are?

For me, a perfect weekend morning involves a slow, gentle start surrounded by things I love (a perfect cup of coffee; morning poetry; a family game; soothing music like Clairo, Kacey Musgraves “Deeper Well” album, Okonski’s “Entrance Music”), and then eases into time spent outside, before landing in clothes that lend themselves to lowkey, happy hanging-out with friends and family.

Weekend Outfit Ideas

HATCH RESTORE // BEST COFFEE MACHINE // RATTAN BED TRAY // NIGHTGOWN // ELITE EYE MASKS // CHIC COFFEE MUG // PLUSH SLIPPERS // BED // SMALL WONDERS // SCALLOPED BEDDING // LUXE HAND CREAM

+My nightgown (seen above)! Helping me live out a fantasy in which I live in a countryside and rise at dawn to witness the miracles born each morning.

+Still absolutely obsessed with this gorgeous little luxe hand cream dispenser (you can buy pods to refill it) I keep on my nightstand. I apply before bed, actually, but I love its chic shape and it really works overnight. The top doubles as a ring dish! This was my go-to gift for Christmas this past year.

+BEST coffee machine. Still so deeply in love with this. It provides guided instructions so you can brew the exact amount of coffee you need, down to the ounce. I love this because sometimes Landon wants his coffee and I’m working out — this enables me to easily make just one cup of coffee when I’m ready. I haven’t done this yet, but you can program the machine to automatically have your coffee ready for you at a certain time — say, 5 a.m., if you’re getting up early for a writing session or to go for a run. Imagine how welcoming that would be! You rise and the coffee is waiting for you! You just need to pop the grounds in the night before.

+We recently picked up this scalloped bedding set from Quince. I’ll be honest: these aren’t the softest sheets I’ve ever had; I actually prefer the Target ones we all love if you’re looking for something on the more affordable side. (And Boll and Branch for a higher-end option — so soft, and get softer with every wash.) But I do love the scalloped style, and I’ve kept the duvet on our bed for the past few weeks. A Matouk look for much less.

+OMG, this bed tray is SENDING ME. My Mom had one exactly like this when I was growing up, and she’d serve us on it when we were sick in bed. I’m kind of itching to purchase this, too! Looks for less here, here (under $50).

+Still in love with my Hatch Restore. THE BEST thing for my sleep rituals! I no longer keep my phone on my nightstand; this is an alarm clock, sound machine, nightlight, etc! Currently $25 off.

+I use eye masks almost every morning; these are the BEST. I save them for weekends / big occasions because they’re $$ but they’re such a great product. More notes on the best eye patches here (including the less expensive ones I use daily).

+Drooling over these cloud-soft-looking slippers…any time I see my slippers by my bed, I think of Pat Schneider’s poem: “It is a kind of love, is it not? / How the cup holds the tea, / How the chair stands sturdy and foursquare, / How the floor receives the bottoms of shoes / Or toes.” She’s not writing explicitly about slippers but I always think a slipper waiting for my feet in the morning is a kind of bonus.

+Had to include my book here, but really I mean any morning poetry or meditation that grounds you in positivity for the day.

+Not seen above: the cinnamon rolls and donuts from Sunday Morning Bakehouse. I love the slow Saturdays that land us here. Those cinnamon rolls are never far from my mind…

The Art of the Weekend: Get Outside.

Whether walking the dog, strolling the neighborhood, stopping by a farmer’s market, investigating the birds in the backyard, gardening —

I’ve recently decided to commit to a Trader Joe’s flower section run each weekend. I buy an assortment flowers and divide them up into different patterned pitchers and vases and place them throughout the house. $25 well spent and they make me happy all week. PS – as a result of said new ritual, I’ve found myself in need of a new pair of flower shears and lo and behold, just ordered the adorable pair you posted here!

My Weekend of Late has been waking up getting ready to head out to the country to hit farm shops and local food stores in Facquire, Louden, & Clark counties in VA. It’s a long drive from Alexandria but one I look forward to every weekend. I long for it when I can’t go. Sometimes I pop into Middleburg books, my friends shop Federal & Black, and discover historic properties. Most times I’m solo, as my teenager is still sleeping. Lately the other half has come along and often Lewis our dog. He gets to run off leash on beautiful old farms or historic properties where it’s quiet, or near old Mill houses. I’m usually back home by noon to family time, activities, maybe a museum exhibition. Usually eat out in the country, but then we are fully stocked for the week ahead all local foods supporting local farms and small businesses. I put on a Podcast or some classical music now we are headed towards Spring the flower stalls will open. It’s pricey but worth it. I’m in a calm mood meandering through the VA countryside with rolling hills and old rock fences. It’s heavenly.

The drawing course sounds like a lovely idea! And +1 for loving the pleasure of staying in bed until 8 while older children play. After that we are in a heavy schedule of football/ musical theatre/ swimming, but hoping to slow our Saturdays down over the summer!

So glad to hear the early, abrupt risings of the baby and toddler years come to an end!
