First, any time I see the word “fringe” I think about when I was living in Lyon, France as a 20 year old, and I went to a hair salon asking for bangs, but used the wrong word — I think I used the term “bordure” or “lisiere,” or some term that means something more akin to “the edge of a field or a lampshade,” because I’d consulted with a pocket dictionary in a rush out the door. The very serious, very chic stylists had a good laugh at me in a “poor American dullard” tone.
