A Magpie reader pointed me in the direction of this Advent devotional from Melanie Shankle, which I just started working my way through after a late start. On Day 6, Shankle shared a meditation on the story from 2 Kings 4, in which a widow finds her self in dire financial straits and seeks counsel from Elisha. Elisha asks, “What do you have in your house?” The impecunious widow replies, “Your servant has nothing there at all, except a little oil.” Elisha directs her to return to her house to extract as much oil as she can. A miracle transpires: she is able to fill enough jugs and jars to pay off her debts.

Shankle stirred something in me when she made the observation that, so often, “we highlight that we have nothing to give and focus more on our weaknesses.” She asks: “What little bit of oil have we not noticed?”

This is true in so many different realms, and distinctly reminded me of a post I wrote earlier this year on comparison. I observed: “There are undoubtedly elements of your current life that you have worked hard to achieve and that you might invite yourself to take a minute to recognize. You probably do not realize this, but there are people in your life who envy those things you are now taking for granted. Maybe you get to travel a ton for work, or you have a super interesting job, or you found a fabulous apartment in a perfect location, or or or.” I know, in short, that there is a lot of oil I’ve not noticed in my own life that other people have.

The devotion also pooled around my thoughts on self-encouragement when we are just at the start of something new. It is rough being a novitiate as an adult. It is more comfortable to point out how bad we are at something than it is to focus on the small things we may be doing right. I am thinking specifically of the frivolous example of golf. I went out to the driving range a handful of times last summer and whiffed, shanked, and, frankly, stunk. On occasion, I’d eke out why my father calls “a worm-burner” — an inelegant error of a ball that basically skips across the top of the grass, nailing ground-dwelling insects on its way. Every fiber of my being wanted to sit in self-deprecation. And to throw all of my clubs away. What’s the point? I huffed, angrily. I’ll never have enough time to really get good at this. But my God, what a ridiculously petulant outlook. Golf is also about spending time with friends, enjoying the outdoors, learning to eat humble pie and get back up on the horse again. Oil, oil, oil.

Bringing this back to the substance of Shankle’s meditation, however, I really had to sit with myself for a minute and unpack the sentence: “We highlight we have nothing to give and focus more on our weaknesses.” I felt spoken to, even rebuked, by those words. I could do more to give more to others. Earlier this year, I had the opportunity to participate in a volunteer project and it couldn’t have come at a worse time. I have been trying to be better about decluttering my weekends, doing “the small thing,” aiming for less, but this was an instance in which I wish I’d added to my plate rather than declined and consoled myself by repeating, “You are setting boundaries, you are saying no to things, these are good,” as though a tap water tonic. Perhaps I could have at least provided something — a donation, words of support, supplies. Shankle, it seemed, saw me at that moment. I’d felt like I had no time to give, but I could have found some way to participate.

Spending some time this morning asking myself, “What’s in my own house? What oil have I missed?”

+Writing this post also left me hopeful and brought to mind a really beautiful message from a sermonist a couple years back: “There’s still time to whitewash the house.”

the magpie edit

PLAID CASHMERE SCARVES. It was 25 degrees this morning! I’ve been bundling up with my favorite plaid cashmere scarves, from Talbots of all places — I’ve collected the three seen in the photo above over the past few years, and they are the absolute best. Super-soft; in great, classic plaids/tartans; and oversized. They’re technically listed as “wraps” but I wear them as scarves over coats, and also like to layer them around my shoulders when wearing cashmere sweaters at home. They are my absolute favorite, and currently 40% off.

NO. 6 BOOTS. I feel like I write about these every year but they really are my favorite cold weather casual footwear. I wear them nearly every day of the workweek, when I’m wearing jeans/sweaters/layers. One thing I love about them is that they are slip-on so you can literally jam your feet in and run out to walk the dog, grab the mail, etc. They are lined with shearling and ultra-warm, but they are not as heavy as they look. Run a tad small – you can size up if in question, especially since you will likely be layering with thicker socks in the winter months. If you like the look but not the price, check out this pair from Target — under $50 and super similar. J. Crew has a variation on the theme that would be appropriate for slightly dressier occasions / if you’re not as into the clog look.

DARN TOUGH MICRO CREW CUSHION SOCKS. I wear these all winter long. They are so incredibly warm and I love the slight cushion/padding underfoot. Heaven! I actually just bought a bunch of pairs to give away as gifts for a few families (every member will get a pair — you get a sock! you get a sock!).

GAP HIGH RISE KICK FIT JEANS. Far and away my favorite purchase I’ve made this week. I have been eyeing this more expensive style from ASKK for awhile and was thrilled to find an ultra-similar fit at Gap for a fraction of the price. I’m excited to have a new silhouette to style. I feel like they’ll look perfect with a chunky loafer — I own and wear these constantly. Because I was ordering from Gap, I also picked up a few other things — this simple tee in white as well as this navy sweatshirt and matching pants (which I intend to style a bit dressier — I’ve never been an athleisure person but I am going to pair with good sneakers and a crossbody bag and a long coat for drop off).

WANDER BEAUTY. I ordered a few goodies from Wander this week — cannot wait to try this award winning eyeshadow duo (I ordered in the Smitten/Swoon combo). One part is cream and the other is powder for layering / versatility. I am really into cream shadows in the winter, so cannot wait to try. I also got this lip balm / lip tint duo in the Boss Babe color.

ESSIE BALLET SLIPPERS. About 70% of the year, I wear bright red on my nails — usually OPI Big Apple Red or Essie Really Red, sometimes some of the more orangey-red colors, too. When I’m not wearing red, I like a really white pink — super-opaque, more white than pink. I like OPI’s gel color “Let’s Be Friends.” But after destroying my nails with gels, I wanted something really soft and forgiving as I find manicures chip much more easily when nails are fragile. My manicurist urged me to try Ballet Slippers, which is iconic/a classic but I’ve always written off as too natural-looking. Like, personally, I want my nails to look “done” if I’ve gone to the trouble of going to the salon, so I usually want the color to really pop. But she did Ballet Slippers on me and I’ve felt like the most elegant, put-together version of myself ever? Like, everything just looks fresh and polished (pun intended) and you don’t notice slight chips at all because the color blends in a bit more with the natural nail color. This might be my new go-to color when I’m off red. You can see me wearing this color in the photo above with my beloved Mme Mink coat!

NINA BLANC TARTAN DRESSES. I finally found my Christmas dress at Nina Blanc. I actually ordered a style slightly different from the one seen above (this one) because I really like a very defined waist and the one above is more loose-fit and I’d need to find a suitable belt, which I don’t have on hand. I cannot wait! I feel like this is a versatile style, too — will wear with velvet pumps/glitzy accessories/a faux fur wrap for Christmas, and then can layer over turtlenecks and pair with boots/flats afterward.

TARGET HOLIDAY FINDS. I did a big shop from Target at some point over Cyber Week. I bought a LOT of Sugar Paper gift wrap (especially pleased with a couple of rolls of this Santa paper — we like to have some designated Santa gift wrap to make it look different/distinct from the gifts from us), a few holiday activities/crafts for the kids (this and this will be coming out this weekend — they are going to flip about the color-in cardboard characters and can set them up in their play room after), these lit moss trees in both sizes, and this cute little countdown-to-Christmas slider, which I think will be fun for the children to keep track of. I also bought this mercury glass table lamp because we had one that was very similar that was accidentally knocked off one of the tables of our family room, and we are in the midst of a big redesign projects and waiting for nicer lamps our designer has selected for us, but the room is dim without that critical light source! I figure we can move this one into my son’s bedroom or the guest bedroom after we replace. You always need extra lighting and mercury glass is so versatile — plus, looks more expensive than it is.

HOLIDAY DECOR. I brought out all of our holiday goodies the day after Thanksgiving. It was so fun to decorate. I used this LL Bean bag to tote a bunch of stuff up from the basement and it was a reminder of how infinitely useful those bags are! So sturdy, with the perfect length strap. We have several of them and they’re always in use! A great gift for a family. I like now to get them with nicknames — e.g., we call my MIL “Gigi” and so had one embroidered with her grandmother name on it! Above, you can also see my boxwood wreaths, which I hung in the double windows above our kitchen sink using this 1.5″ striped grosgrain ribbon.

USBORNE LOOK INSIDE BOOKS. If you’re running out of time/energy to select gifts for little ones, go with these clever little look inside books. My children are obsessed with the body one, but they have lots of themes to pick from, including space, animals, etc. If you want to bundle with another gift, this Janod doctor set would be perfect with the body book and has been a hit with my children for years (you can see it in the background of the photo above) and, remarkably, we haven’t yet lost any of the pieces. For other themes, check out the little figurine toobs (SIC) by this brand. I just bundled the “Deep Sea Look Inside Book” with this underwater animal set for one of my nephews.

SPLITS59 AIRWEIGHT LEGGINGS. I recently read that these are excellent for everyday wear — the material is apparently less sporty/active/performance and more everyday-appropriate. I don’t usually wear a ton of leggings during the week but I’ve just been feeling in a rut lately and need some new looks, which I shared an inspiration board for here. Contemplating buying myself a pair of these. I also through a pair of these inexpensive jersey Old Navy leggings into my cart when I did my Gap order. Sometimes Gap/Old Navy are the best for these kinds of things.

PHOEBE AND JUNE GIFT TAGS. I bought four different styles of these precious die-cut gift cards from a local Maryland artist! I was so excited — they have Rifle Paper vibes but are very reasonably priced. I love the patterns I got, as they’ll work perfectly with some of the more pastel colored wrap I got from Sugar Paper and Rifle.

My Latest Snag: Our Christmas Dresses!

I went hard on tartan for mini and I this Christmas! I snagged this just-launched dress for myself (will be delivered by December 20th) and am obsessing over this adorable tartan dress I bought for mini. (Last time I checked, the site was still honoring a sitewide 40% off with code MERRY). I love both the style I went with and the long-sleeved variation. Now I need micro’s outfit. I’m contemplating a sweater like this with navy corduroys? Or maybe go all out with black watch trousers? I can’t decide! I am really stuck with him on the formal occasions since he’s outgrown jon-jons and I’m mourning that. Ha.

Weekend Musings: How’d I Get this Hallelujah?

Earlier this week, Fleetwood Mac’s singer/songwriter/keyboardist Christine Vie passed away. I was moved by Stevie Nicks’ post about her death, written by hand on a legal pad, and posted to Instagram:

There is so much that tugs at the heart in this. Stevie is no stranger to loss — I did a deep dive on my favorite Fleetwood Mac song, “Gypsy,” only to discover that it was written in part in response to the death of a close girlfriend decades ago. I was surprised that she chose to use lyrics from another band (Haim) to commemorate the loss, too, but the tone they set is moving, expressing gratitude and also a quiet insistence that the dead are very much with us.

Shopping Break.

+Somehow this 26-piece tupperware set is only $8?! It’s $26 everywhere else. Great for holiday festivities/gifting — not so precious you’ll worry if you don’t get it back. Generally, though, I can’t recommend snapware enough for food storage. It never warps or looks cloudy, keeps a really nice seal, etc.

+Found that quilted, collared Ganni coat (a Magpie bestseller!) on sale here, here, and here.

+How CHIC are these bow hair clips?! Also comes in black and a few different, kitschy shapes, like this poodle.

+This maxi length sweater skirt is so chic.

+Obsessing over this long tweed jacket.

+Found some Nike daybreaks in a great colorway on sale for 40% off!

+Totally obsessed with this new sweater silhouette from Jenni Kayne.

+How fab is this under-$100 quatrefoil-top side table?!

+Missoni beanies on super sale! So chic! Cute paired with a pink puffer like this or this.

+This metallic dress is the perfect lowkey way to bring in the holiday. Would work with bump/postpartum.

+Along similar lines (e.g. lowkey festive), love this tuxedo blazer paired with dark jeans.

+Cute striped sweater.

+Ended up buying this sweatsuit set in the navy!

I have felt totally blah the past week when it’s come to everyday dressing. I don’t want to wear any of my jeans, sweaters, or tees; I’m tired of my boots and sneakers; and I generally feel uninspired. This happens to me usually once or twice a season because I tend to buy statement pieces that excite me, but that I’m disinclined to wear more than once a week, and I generally neglect the “basics” that should form a tried-and-true uniform. Right now, I am very drawn to black and white basics I can mix and match and glitz up with accessories for weekday. I’m also super into cropped flares? I have been eyeing this pair from ASKK NY and then found these VERY similar ones at Gap and had to order! Below, all the items I wish I had waiting for me in my closet ATM, some of which I had to purchase this week!

Q: Hosting Christmas! Pretty tablecloths and tablesetting things!

A: I love everything from Mrs. Alice’s holiday collection. To keep things from getting too expensive, I would invest in her napkins and a tabletop accessory or two and pair with an inexpensive tartan tablecloth (<<we own this exact style and I don’t know how it’s so inexpensive right now; it’s actually a nice, thick quality — originally $50, now $15?). Alternately, invest in her tablecloth and pair with less expensive napkins like these. I love the idea of mixing in some festive taper candles, like these peppermint ones, these evergreen ones, or these painted holly ones — or you could go more traditional with these forest green ones. I love the green ones — that’s the exact set I bought and used for Thanksgiving — because they worked with both a fall tablescape (browns, oranges, taupes, greens) and will now transition perfectly to a tartan one.

A few other fun finds you might consider…

Q: How to wear Stuart Weitzman Reserve boots hiding in my closet.

A: You got this! I think you have to wear with leggings or skinny pants/jeans. Try these stirrup style ones that are creating quite the stir (trending) or these Emerson Fry ones (have heard good first-hand reviews from Magpies who own them). Both have a ponte material that makes them look more like daytime wear than, say, black spandex fitness leggings. I would pair with a slouchy/oversized sweater on top. My mind runs to this Jenni Kayne one that people worship, but a few other options for less:

NAADAM

QUINCE

J. CREW

Alternately, pair with the bottoms with a black fitted turtleneck and a slightly oversized vest, like this or even something like this.

Q: Purse in the photo above.

A. It is from French label Soeur! Looking pretty EPIC with those Nike Dunks, eh?!

Q: Festive holiday statement earrings.

A: These are the dream, and would incidentally work year-round for any festive affair (weddings, anniversaries, birthdays…!). You can get the vibe for less with these. I also love these double emerald drops, these flowers, these $20 bow earrings (which a few Magpies have purchased and shared photos of themselves wearing — adorable!), these pink stone ones (would be fun with black velvet!), these sparkly drops, these oversized crystal ones, and these stars.

Q: Christmas for my 2-year-old daughter with more toys than she knows what to do with.

A: Art supplies and sensory play materials! I feel a lot less guilty giving my children materials that they will use for creativity vs. stuff that may sit in desuetude. For art supplies at that age, try an easel (<<the exact one we have, very sturdy!), a few rolls of paper, and gel crayons or paint sticks. Paint tends to make me nervous / requires more supervision in our home, but the gel crayons and paint sticks glide just like paint and are much less nerve-wracking in the hands of a two year old. My children also love to dig into boxes of art supplies like these to make completely random little doodads and doohickies out of pipe cleaners, googly eyes, and felt. Giant coloring posters like this (customizable with her name!) or this are fun rainy day activities. You can also pin up to a play room wall for coloring over a series of days/weeks.

On the sensory play front, I have a whole guide here, but Amazon has some cute pre-fabbed ones here in different themes, and this Etsy shop always puts together the sweetest themed bundles that use a play-doh base, which is probably the best at a two year old’s age unless you are comfortable with a bit more mess.

Q: A holiday gift for the SIL who keeps the whole family running and has everything.

A: What a sweet thing to say about her — wow! This gift guide for sisters might be a good starting point — all things I would love to receive / that are great quality / that women might not buy themselves. A few other ideas:

PERSONALIZED INITIAL NECKLACE

A SPLURGEY CARD CASE OR WALLET (HAVE A FEW SIBS GO IN ON IT)

FLOWER DELIVERIES FOR THREE MONTHS

PERSONALIZED COSMETICS POUCHES — HAVE GIVEN THESE AS GIFTS A FEW TIMES AND THEY ARE ALWAYS A HIT

GIFT CARD FOR MANICURE/PEDICURE OR BLOWOUT AT DRYBAR

LILY & BEAN BAG

Q: Engagement ring. Love to know about your preferences – style, color, etc.

A: Mr. Magpie did it all on his own, though I did loudly mention on many occasions that I liked a solitaire with minimal prong/metalwork. He nailed it. Mine is a round cut set very low in platinum with only four prongs holding it in place. I love the look — almost like a diamond floating on my finger. He went to Steve at Pampillonia Jewelers, who has done many pieces of beautiful jewelry for my mother over the years.

Q: Christmas presents for ME. Jewelry? Bag?

A: Shoes are on my personal lust list — would love a pair of Kirkwood Casati boots in either the riding style or combat style, or a pair of fun Loewe sneaks. For a bigger splurge, I’ve been eyeing the Celine Sangle bag for several years now. I’m waiting for a big personal milestone to buy it for myself, but maybe Santa will hear and treat me to it first. Hehe. On the jewelry front, I would love a new pair of everyday earrings. I wear pearls nearly every day, but would be fabulous to have something to mix in — would love Van Cleef and Arpels quatrefoils or something fabulous and wild from Brent Neale. I have also been eyeing the heirloom-quality pieces from Aurelia Demark for awhile now — an engraved charm bracelet or heart pendant would be so lovely to mix into my daily jewelry wardrobe.

Q: Metallic/festive flats.

A: This pair from Zara is under $100 and perfect. Also adore this pair from Larroude (look for less with these) and these Jimmy Choos. These gold LRs are also fab.

Q: Coffee table.

Q: Chic office chair with arms.

A: Could not love my Laura Davidson more.

Q: Nice classic lingerie – I dress conservatively so looking for quality, fun underthings.

A: I really love the Natori feather bra — so comfortable; the only wire bra I wear — and they are on sale here. These last forever and are beautiful but wearable on a daily basis. These bralettes from Cosabella are also beautiful, and coordinate with my favorite boyshorts. A bit racier but I love these bralettes from Negative, too — they are UNBELIEVABLY comfortable (!). I doubted it because of the material but reach for them just as often as I do my seamless racerbacks. And then of course there is the creme de la creme, La Perla (how gorgeous is this?). I invested in a few sets years ago and they are just like wearable art. If you’re on the flatter side (like me), I just discovered this brand that caters to us and am intrigued by this style.

Zara is nailing it this season. I wore this velvet mini up in NYC a few weeks ago and felt like a million bucks in it. A few other pieces turning my head for upcoming festivities…

Today, a fun little parlor game to play. I’m sharing a series of prompts for you to answer in the comments.

01. TOO MUCH OR TOO LITTLE?

02. DORITOS: COOLER RANCH OR NACHO CHEESE?

03. REGRET WHAT YOU’VE SAID OR REGRET NOT SAYING ANYTHING?

04. STILL OR SPARKLING?

05. BIG PEARLS OR SMALL DIAMONDS?

06. NEW OR VINTAGE?

07. MOVIE THEATER CANDY OR POPCORN?

08. JACKIE OR MARILYN?

09. KETCHUP OR MUSTARD?

10. NETFLIX OR HULU?

11. FEEL EMBARRASSED OR FEEL AFRAID?

12. CHICAGO WINTER OR MIAMI SUMMER?

13. SIT NEXT TO JOHN HAMM OR JOHN KRASINSKI?

14. SEQUEL OR PREQUEL?

15. LAUNDRY OR DISHES?

I’ll go first.

01. TOO MUCH OR TOO LITTLE? Too much. There’s that fashion adage floating around: “Take one thing off before leaving the house.” I bullishly go in the opposite direction.

02. DORITOS: COOLER RANCH OR NACHO CHEESE? Cooler Ranch!

03. REGRET WHAT YOU’VE SAID OR REGRET NOT SAYING ANYTHING? The latter: esprit de l’escalier. I’d feel worse saying something I regretted.

04. STILL OR SPARKLING? Depends on my mood, but usually sparkling at lunch and still at every other meal.

05. BIG PEARLS OR SMALL DIAMONDS? Big pearls.

06. NEW OR VINTAGE? I wish I were more of a vintage gal, but if I’m honest — new.

07. MOVIE THEATER CANDY OR POPCORN? Popcorn, 10 out of 10.

08. JACKIE OR MARILYN? Jackie.

09. KETCHUP OR MUSTARD? Mustard! I’m a vinegar head.

10. NETFLIX OR HULU? I have no allegiances.

11. FEEL EMBARRASSED OR FEEL AFRAID? Embarrassed. I can usually work through embarrassment and/or laugh at myself pretty quickly. Fear can rattle me for a long while.

12. CHICAGO WINTER OR D.C. SUMMER? D.C. summer. I hate being cold.

13. SIT NEXT TO JOHN HAMM OR JOHN KRASINSKI? Hamm. C’mon.

14. SEQUEL OR PREQUEL? Prequel! Love the befores. I also find prequel writing impressive — a lot more constraints on the author.

15. LAUNDRY OR DISHES? Laundry. I especially loathe washing the cutting boards.

Your turn!

P.P.P.S. What do you eat when your fridge is bare? Loved the answers to this post!

After my former colleague Nate passed away earlier this year, I reached out to several of my erstwhile team members to pass on the sad news, in case they hadn’t heard, and check in, in case they had. One of them asked if I wouldn’t mind a phone call — “My thoughts are a mess right now,” she wrote. “It might be nice to process together.” And so we did. We sat on the line with one another on opposite coasts of the country, rambling and sighing and clearing our throats and remembering. We said all the things that felt right to say, platitudes and prayers alike.

I think frequently of Nate — possibly more often than I did before he passed? (Is it OK to put that on paper?) Most days of the week, I drive by the exact intersection at which I learned the news. And last night, I laid in bed, and thought — out of the blue — about that conversation in his memory. I thought of how dignified, how human, it had been for my colleague to request that call. At the time, it had seemed a pittance. What do words do in the face of something so absurdly tragic? Now, though, that call seems like the only possible and remotely proportionate response. We were two people gathering around his memory, saying his name, forging a small and makeshift pyre.

Earlier this year, I took a train up to New York to visit with a friend who had just lost her mother. I didn’t know what I was meant to do once there — speak openly of her parent? make comfort food? divert attention? — but felt I wanted to be close at hand. Perhaps that’s most of supporting the bereaved anyhow: sitting there, on the phone, or in the living room, saying the things, or not.

I don’t know why the memory of that call stirred me so deeply last night. But it moves me, the way people bead together, concentrating at the wound.

+Memories of my grandfather.

+On grief: “life takes root around the perimeter.”

+If you need a “get up and go” message today.

+And in case you’re “in it” as a parent right now.

Shopping Break.

+Wow this dress is perfect for NYE/holiday.

+I find mercury glass pieces — votives, candle holders, jars, lamps — look much more expensive than they tend to be. I love this under-$100 lamp!

+My most recent Amazon order: pom pom knee socks for mini to wear to the Nutcracker, a new holiday book for the children, and this popular illuminating nail concealer that so many people have raved about to me. I am a dedicated manicure gal, and I go religiously, but I had gel polish on my nails for too long and they are so thin and weak! I need to give them a break and will just be applying this nail concealer for the next week or two before I do my favorite holiday reds, which are OPI’s Big Apple Red and Essie’s Really Red. I also sometimes like the orange-y reds (Kate Spade vibe) — Essie’s Geranium is really fun.

+This $30 personal safety alarm may be the most popular item I’ve ever featured?! Great gift for daughters going off to college, siblings in urban areas, runners, etc.

+ADORABLE $20 gift for a little one — perfect for a child’s friend, neighbor, cousin, etc.

+H&M has some really fun home finds ATM: glass candlesticks, ice cream Christmas ornaments, bubble vases!

+This glitzy hair clip is SO spectacular.

+This gold sequin turtleneck is just the right amount of holiday flare. Pair with jeans to tone down or dress up with a velvet midi skirt.

+These “daily routine” flash cards are such a cute way to give kids insight into what’s ahead. Would be clever when trying to navigate a transition back to school, or with a new caregiver, or on weekends.

+This three-part piggy bank (spend-save-give) is such a clever way to introduce sound financial habits to children.

+I’ve heard these napkins are great for everyday dining — a nice, thick material and such fun colors.

In honor of Giving Tuesday, I wanted to spotlight four exceptional non-profit organizations I have had the honor of getting to know and support over the past few years. Each of these organizations moves me deeply in their commitment to women who have endured homelessness, trauma, and/or domestic violence. I am consistently humbled by their ingenuity, empathy, and nimble-footedness.

HOUSE OF RUTH. A Washington, D.C. area beacon of hope that empowers women, children, and families to rebuild their lives and heal from trauma, abuse, and homelessness. This beautiful non-profit provides a wide range of services to survivors of domestic violence, including housing, therapy, childcare.

MY SISTER’S PLACE. This innovative D.C.-area organization shelters, supports and empowers survivors of domestic violence and their children, while providing leadership and education to build a supportive community. The first in the DMV to provide a hotline and emergency housing for survivors.

SAFE AUSTIN. A national model for support, empowerment, advocacy for survivors of domestic violence. I discovered this program through my Austin-based Aunt and Uncle and the range of programs they offer is staggering and inspiring.

GOOD+ FOUNDATION. An anti-poverty organization with a unique model: they pair essential goods (diapers, formula, cribs, strollers, etc) with innovative services to create an upward trajectory for under-resourced families. I love that you can either donate money or buy items off of their Amazon registries that will go directly to a family in need.

My parents taught us to prize solitude and self-direction. Every weekend day and summer afternoon, we enjoyed (or endured, as the mood might have been) “Quiet Time” from 1-3 P.M. My four siblings and I were sent to our bedrooms to read, draw, nap, doodle, play on our own. Sometimes this felt like torture, the minutes dripping by like honey. My sisters and I would occasionally scamper from bedroom to bedroom, down the carpeted hush of the hallway, mice at play. But I also remember well the afternoons I’d repose in my cave until dinnertime, my nose in a Nancy Drew, called back to company only by the ringing of my mother’s dinner bell. I now see the imprint of their ways in my near-constant hunger for time alone, the fact that my vocation is a shrine to seclusion.

C.S. Lewis wrote: “I am a product of long corridors, empty sunlit rooms, upstairs indoor silences, attics explored in solitude.”

I recently transcribed this musing onto a wafer of paper on my desk. His words both parade and parry, reminding me to celebrate the crooked path — the long corridor — that brought me all the way to the little white desk at which I sit in my studio, thinking. And they also nudge me, with some rebuke, to unclasp myself from the noise and clutter in which I so frequently nestle.

There is treasure in the tranquil.

The other day, I thought how beautiful Lewis’s words were as an aspiration for my own children. I wish them long corridors and upstairs indoor silences into which they can pour their imaginations.

Wishing you, too, long corridors and empty sunlit rooms.

+I also wish you kinder seas. (Magpies often ask me for the exact wording of that quote – a great phrase to have in your pocket when someone needs some empathy in a tough time.)

+On moving back to my hometown of DC.

+Replantings.

+On creative habits.

+On not wanting anything to change.

Shopping Break.

+A great gift for a budding artist. I bought this, along with Faber Castell pencils, for mini this holiday! Oso and Me also makes really adorable colored pencil rolls that you can monogram. Sweet gift.

+These pearl boots were really popular in a combat style that is now sold out, but I love them in the knee-high shaft length. Chic chic!

+Been on a puzzle tear…currently working on this. SO cute. But how fun is this double-sided one from the same brand?!

+One of my girlfriends has one of these mini Hermes-inspired bags and I swear it looks like a million bucks on her.

+This ribbed metallic dress is SO chic and only $29.

+Wish this striped and embellished sweater weren’t already sold out in my size! Missed it!

+STILL not over this gown. Wow wow wow.

+Obsessed with the color and fit of this mohair sweater.

+Comfortable lounge set on sale in flattering black — I LOVE Eberjey for loungewear. You can also buy just the pants on sale here.

+Micro asked Santa for “an excavator” — we bought him this Bruder. I think I’ll bundle with these construction jammies.

+Love these acid-wash joggers.

+This affordable boucle jacket would look fab with jeans and a white tee.

+OK now this cookie jar is beyond adorable.

+These tumblers are so sophisticated. I want to pour some sort of cranberry cocktail in one immediately.

+Dream winter mule.

A few smaller businesses that have some great deals I just took advantage of —

01. RIFLE PAPER. 30% off with code MERRY. Just bought some more holiday gift wrap using this promotion. I bought this style and this style for Christmas, plus some birthday gift wrap for the future. I really appreciate that they sell rolls versus sheets. I find so many of the higher end brands of gift wrap with gorgeous designs sell in squares that are too small for a lot of the gifts I am wrapping! Note that many of Rifle’s gift wraps are more winter themed than explicitly Christmas, so most work for any (non-denominational) celebration.

02. PHEOBE AND JUNE. 20% off orders over $1 (appears in cart). I was delighted to discover this local Maryland illustrator and ordered four styles of her holiday tags: these village tags, these nutcrackers, these snow globes, and these Santas. They are already reasonably priced at $6 for 10 but I didn’t hate the extra discount! Kind of regretting I didn’t order double or triple of the Santas for all of Santa’s gifts!

03. LSWLONDON MINDFULNESS CARDS. 20% off orders over $32. I think these journaling prompts would be such a great gift for fellow introspectives, or these mindfulness ones for anyone on a wellness journey. They even have a set specifically for new moms! Also adore these cards for kids — a perfect stocking stuffer.

04. FRILLY FROG. 40% off and free shipping (discount applied automatically). Includes many great, high-end children’s brands — snag Kissy Kissy pajamas, Bailey Boys sweaters, Petit Bebe dresses, and more.

05. NANTUCKET KIDS. 40% off with code MERRY. This tartan dress is about as perfect as a holiday dress comes, and how sweet is this holiday bow play dress? If you’re a retriever fam, your boy needs this turtleneck. I often buy here to get the TBBC look but with slightly different (less common) patterns. I do see a lot of TBBC out and about so fun to have slightly different patterns! This brand runs a tiny bit small in my experience.

06. Less under-the-radar, but these Amazon deals really jumped off the page at me and I hadn’t seen them covered elsewhere…

VITAMIX — MY HUSBAND JUST TOLD ME LAST NIGHT HOW MUCH HE LOVES THIS…I SURPRISED HIM WITH IT TWO YEARS AGO AND IT’S JUST THE CADILLAC OF BLENDERS…CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT

MAGNATILES

HOT PINK TURTLENECK

07. LITTLE ENGLISH. Site is still up to 50% off, but now with free ship using code CYBERSHIP22, which removes that final shopping friction. I love their turtlenecks and overalls (the latter run pretty narrow – FYI), but you could also use the promo to knock out your holiday dressing for the littles.

08. APPOINTED. 30% off with code HOLIDAY. This task planner would be PERFECT for me if there was a tiny bit more space under each day (my daily lists are long and ultra fine-tipped) but could be a great pick for you. I’ve heard the best things about this brand! I also love this desk calendar — having one of these within my line of sight every day is such a big help. You just glance up and get your bearings when you’re on a call, scheduling something, etc. Finally, this card keeper is brilliant for stowing cards for every occasion (birthday, sympathy, encouragement, etc) and comes with six elegant, understated cards that would be handy to have. All of these items would be beautiful gifts for an organized mother, sister, friend.

P.S. I often get messages asking me to relink this post, which provides encouragement on the precipice of a big life change.

P.P.S. On navigating criticism.
