What have you been watching lately? I always love this time of year because so many movies come out in advance of the upcoming awards shows (Oscars, Golden Globes, etc.). We’ve been working our way through a list of at least a dozen promising films/shows. Some sporadic thoughts below.

KLAUS. (Streaming on Netflix.) This children’s movie actually came out in 2019 but I heard nothing about it, and I have no idea why, as it is one of the most charming, moving, entertaining children’s movies I’ve seen in a long time. We watched it with my children (3 and 5, for context), and they belly-laughed their way through it. Klaus offers the “backstory” behind Santa Clause, but without competing for or obscuring any of the narratives with which we have all grown up. I was fidgety at first, wondering whether the film would lead to awkward conversations or contradictions about what our children know about Santa, but instead, it enriched the Santa narrative in beautiful, human ways. It is also a tale of community, kindness, and giving — gorgeous messages for the season. The animation is superb and I’ll take any movie that includes an animated character of Norm MacDonald being…Norm MacDonald (rest in peace, Norm!). The cast is fabulous, too — Rashida Jones!

EMILY THE CRIMINAL. (Streaming on Netflix.) Aubrey Plaza is having a moment right now between this fast-paced criminal thriller and the second season of White Lotus. She is exceptional in this movie, which tells the story of a woman saddled with student loan debt and a criminal record. Unable to land a solid job because of these issues, she becomes a “dummy shopper” and walks down a dark criminal path into the world of credit card fraud. The movie is obviously engaging with some intense social commentary, but the telling is nuanced and complicated by the protagonist’s decisions. There were parts of the movie where I was literally white-knuckling it, I was gripping Mr. Magpie’s hand so hard. It is intense, thrilling, quick-paced. The movie’s crowning glory, though, is its unbelievably tight editing. Too many movies are too long these days. At just around 90 minutes, this movie packs it all in and trims out all the extraneous bits. As an example, there are some characters and relationships that are not well-fleshed out and that more or less “yadda yadda yadda” over details, but in a smart way — knowing more about them would add nothing to the movie. As a result, you have a film that moves with serpentine speed and precision. Excellent.

PINOCCHIO. (Streaming on Netflix.) I must preface this review by saying I absolutely love Guillermo del Toro and enjoyed watching him pluck at all his hallmark motifs and themes: children put in harm’s way, the paranormal, the Catholic faith, relationships between parents and children, “the underworlds.” He shines in these contexts, and there is a lot of meat on the bone in this re-telling of the classic children’s tale. The animation is incredible (stop motion). However. The movie just didn’t hit the chord I was expecting — it felt slightly off-kilter, unbalanced. I felt as though it swung between too-twee/too-saccharine and too-macabre. I kept waiting for heart-warming resonance, and it never arrived — it felt as though it was always swinging a bit too far in one direction. Some of the moments are cloyingly sweet and others are too-depressing for a PG film. I can’t put my finger on it, but something did not line up. Worth a watch for the cinema of it all, and for the masterfulness of the re-telling/re-imagining, but not my cup of tea.

SLOW HORSES. (Streaming on Apple TV.). This is a television series, not film, but I am loving it. We’re maybe four episodes in. This series tells the story of a “back-office” of cast-off British intelligence agents still trying to make it back up to “the big leagues.” Intrigue unfolds and you learn that there is more to the story of these “second tier” (“slow horses”) agents. Gary Oldman stars as the washed-up head of the office, and he is brilliant.

GLASS ONION. (Streaming on Netflix.). The sequel to “Knives Out” and a total romp. We loved it! Funny, twisty-turny, satirical — I straight-up LOVED this franchise’s reprise of the light-weight murder mystery as a genre. We had lots of theories brewing about “whodunit” and ended up fairly close to the mark, but the ending was still really fun with some elements I’d not anticipated. A great cast, a fabulous set. Just fun. I will say that this movie was about 30 or 40 minutes too long — I wish more movies were “Emily the Criminal” length!

EMILY IN PARIS. (Streaming on Netflix.) The third season launched a week ago and I have been watching it in bits and pieces whenever I have some downtime or can’t sleep. This series is so ridiculous and frivolous, but it has just enough surprising “real talk” in it to keep it from floating off into the ether.

Still on our list — additions and/or votes of cancellation welcome:

Post-Scripts.

+What was the best movie you watched this year? I was obsessed with “Nope.” You can read some thoughts on it here. I hope it garners some Oscar buzz. Totally blew me away.

+What was the best book you read this year? Honestly, I didn’t read anything that sent me. Hoping for better in 2023. Currently reading this, but here is a good list of books to check out if you’re in a drought, and this is what I was reading last winter.

+What were your favorite wardrobe additions this year? I got a lot of mileage out of this ivory sweater, these kick flare jeans, and these sherpa loafers.

Shopping Break.

+Net-A-Porter is having an epic sale and I am currently eyeing this Lug Von Siga and this Doen for summer. PSA that the dress I ended up wearing on NYE (we ended up going out!!) is currently 50% off — worth buying now and saving for next new year because it is a STATEMENT and I’ve never seen anything quite like it. Fits TTS, maybe a tad big.

+I shared this pullover last week and you guys LOVED it — found it on sale for 30% off here.

+When I lived in France, I would splurge on the expensive body soap from the department store in the middle of Lyon whose name now evades me (ah, time!). It was by the brand Roger et Gallet, and I remember I loved it so much that I bought several sleeves of the soap home. I just rediscovered it on Amazon! All of the soaps are richly milled and elegantly perfumed in unisex scents. I’ve now added their hand soap and cream to my cart!

+A good price for a tufted ottoman.

+20% off and free shipping on this fabulous scalloped rug.

+Select colors of these cashmere crewneck sweaters are under $70. These are SUCH a good buy. Easy to layer with and such a chic outfit with your favorite jeans and flats/sneaks.

+I’m testing a bunch of new beauty products at the moment, including this Estee Lauder advanced night repair serum (have heard good things), this cult-following exfoliator from Biologique Recherche, and this tinted moisturizer.

+Did you grow up with a breadbox in your home? My mother had one that had a sliding metal panel in the front. The basic idea is you keep it in there to prevent it from molding — needs to be a dry/non-humid device. I love this French-style wooden one and might put it in our pantry. We go through a lot of sandwich bread and baguette in our home…

+This breton stripe pullover is fun.

+This one-piece swimsuit is on high sellout risk — only a few left here and here, though fully stocked at SEA itself. Seems to be THE suit for the season ahead. Note that SEA is currently offering an extra 15% off sale!

+If you’re going to wear the above suit, I have to implore you to buy these — they work with swimsuits and even in water! I used them last summer for a lot of pool days.

+Into this saucy sweater.

+Love a dramatic top like this. YES!

popular winter fashion

+PHONE CASE. I get so many questions about my pink phone case and finally found one that is nearly identical for $25 here! Comes in other colors. I love the green.

+OLAPLEX NO. 6 BOND SMOOTHER. I got my hair cut and colored this week and my stylist used this product prior to blow-drying. He raved about it as follows: “It’s weightless and really smooths out and protects hair.” I ordered it from the styling chair and am REALLY impressed with the results after my first attempt at blow-drying my hair post-cut. If I am honest, there are a lot of great products in this general category — I also love Drybar’s PrepRally, dpHue’s conditioning spray, and Davines’ all-in-one milk. All of them detangle, protect, prime. But I do think Olaplex has the least “weight” / “feel” to it — it’s invisible! — which is key to my very fine hair. I tested Olaplex shampoo/conditioner awhile ago and was underwhelmed but I’m inspired to re-try and test some of their other products…

+GUCCI BOOTS. (!!!). Mr. Magpie majorly surprised me with these boots on Christmas morning! I had already opened a bunch of thoughtful gifts from him, including a new cake stand from Mosser Glass, and then he said: “I think I see something behind the couch?” I couldn’t believe it! I am having so much fun wearing these bold boots. I especially like wearing them with my black skinnies and various knits.

+J. CREW TOOTHPICK JEANS. I don’t care about all that buzz about millennials vs Gen Z and the fault lines on the subject of denim. Some footwear and some knitwear just looks better (to my eyes) with skinny jeans — more proportional. I am loving pairing my new boots with these skinnies from J. Crew. They have a good amount of stretch. Take your true size!

+HANNAH ARTWEAR DRESSES. I am drooling over this pink dress and this blue one from Hannah Artwear. I must have one of these for my summer closet! I have a wedding on the calendar this summer and am contemplating springing for one of these for the occasion. Check out the entire new season, though — so many chic finds! — and some of the past-season pieces that are now marked down to like 70% off.

+SELF-PORTRAIT TWEED MINI. I cannot stop thinking about this dress and pairing it with a white turtleneck or button-down beneath…

+KOLSVART SWEDISH CANDY. I found a few bags of these gummy candies in my stocking and OMG I AM IN LOVE. I must try all the flavors! If you are a Haribo lover, this is kind of like the upgrade pick. You must treat yourself!

+HAMMETT MARTINI GLASSES. A few days before Christmas, we had a cocktail party where Mr. Magpie served up espresso martinis using homemade coffee liqueur. He used the America’s Test Kitchen recipe for the martinis and the liqueur and it was so worth the effort (note that you need to steep the liqueur for seven days). They were absolutely delicious. I was obsessed with serving them in these glasses that the founder of Hammett generously sent my way. They have a really thin lip and a great shape — we’ve also use them for a few other cocktails since, including Pink Ladys and Manhattans. You must check out Hammett in general, though — the CHICEST glassware at reasonable prices. I also have one of their tube pitchers and it is a great, petite size for serving up batched cocktails/a pitcher of martinis (!!!) and at $30 would make such an elegant gift. I’m going to share a post this week on everything we did for the cocktail party because it was such a blast and had a kind of retro/old-school feel to it that made it feel really fun. More to come!

+LA LIGNE MINI MARINA SWEATER. I just could not love this brand more. I want to wear all their dresses and all their knits and nothing else. My mom surprised me with this mini marina sweater in classic navy/white and it has such a fun fit (slightly cropped), with a throwback rollneck collar, and longish cuffs. I just know I’ll love this forever!

+HOKKAIDO RAMEN SANTOUKA. Mr. Magpie and I had some of the best ramen we’ve had in a long time at Hokkaido Ramen out in Tyson’s. I’m actually not a big fan of the Tyson’s area — brings back memories of working in government consulting for a year after I graduated from college, which was very much not my speed and getting stuck in the horrific traffic regularly trying to get home. However. This ramen was something else, and very much worth the trek. It reminded us both of the ramen from Wasabi in Chicago, where we were regulars. One of my favorite meals this past month! Taking my own advice, we went out there for a leisurely midweek lunch, and it was delightful. (Also, a Whole Foods right across the way, so we knocked out an errand quickly, too!)

+SLEEPER JACKET. I can’t stop thinking about this silky topper. The pearl buttons! The puff sleeve! It looks like it could be vintage? Such a fun piece to throw on over a cocktail dress, or to pair with jeans and heels for a night out.

+CHILDREN’S SNOW GEAR. My children are kitted out for inclement weather, though we’ve only had one morning of snow (that promptly melted). I am loving their new bibs and snow gloves from new brand Northern Classics. I love the minimalist styling and great colors — all of them can be handed down to little brothers/sisters and white in particular goes with EVERYTHING. The founder, Kristin, is lovely and very passionate about the pieces. She started Northern Classics “after spending hours searching for snowsuits for [her] newborn twins” and finding a big gap in the market in terms of quality and aesthetics. I’m in love! Because Kristin does not yet offer snow boots, I am complementing the bibs and gloves with these snowboots I found from Scandi label Kuling. They are 40% off and come in a bunch of great muted pastel colors as well as a few patterns. I went with green for micro and blue for mini, but again love that the colors work for either gender. Though we’ve not yet battle-tested them, the children have been clunking around the house in them and they have a really thick, sturdy, seemingly heavy-duty sole. (Scandis know their snow!)

My Latest Snag: Nike Daybreaks.

I did order myself a pair of the sneaks you all have been loving so much so we can TWIN. They are currently on sale plus an extra 20% off with code CHEER in many colors on the Nike site. I got the neutral ones that weren’t on sale, of course…buying the one thing excluded from sale is my toxic trait, ha.

Weekend Musings: Calm and Storm.

I loved this quote from Willa Cather:

“There are some things you learn best in calm, and some in storm.”

Mainly a reminder that growth happens in the bumpy bits, too — and that some kinds of growth can only happen in tumult. I recently told one of my sisters that because of one of the most stressful periods of my life (which I wrote about recently here), I’ve learned to trust myself and my own resiliency in ways I don’t think I otherwise would. A few years ago, my husband and I were in the midst of a very high-stakes real estate situation, and I was able to tell myself: “You will get to the other side; you’ve done it before, you’ll do it again.” Just knowing I’d been pushed to my limits in the past and emerged on the other side just fine gave me courage.

What do you take from it?

+This sweater sparks joy.

+Love these tumblers — we own the coupes from this line.

+Love this jacket!

+Mr. Magpie recently installed this beadboard drying rack in our laundry room and it brings me SO much joy!!! I no longer drape clothes in the bath tub / over the sink / on every handle in our home.

+Everyone’s favorite swimsuit, fully stocked in all colors, 20% off with code YOUROCK.

+Pair with this inexpensive pareo.

+I’ve never used a lip plumping product but have been hearing about this brand

+This popular quilted coat is now 50% off.

+Happy new year! Treat yourself to a proper vacuum. You’ll be so happy you did. I personally prefer corded vacs to the handheld/rechargeable ones. I mean, yes, the stick ones can be great for quick clean ups but does it really take that long to pull out a cord and plug it in? I find it so much better than worrying that the vac is about to run out of charge. Also, SO much more powerful.

+Cute mini bowl set. I find pinch bowls like this SO handy for infinite uses — decorating cookies, serving condiments and snacks, etc. I like the way they’re wrapped up. Just added to my running list of hostess gifts.

+These metallic sneaks are fun.

P.S. Holiday party attire.

P.P.S. Gear for the new year.

P.P.P.S. An intention for the new year.

I have been aware, this past year, that my medical anxiety has been spiking — any time the children are unwell, or a loved one or I encounter even a mild health issue, I tie myself into a knot of worry. I am prone to catastrophic thinking, but it always seems to cluster around matters pertaining to the well-being of myself and my family members. This seems to have developed (or, perhaps, escalated) after my friend Elizabeth passed away in her 20s, and the connection between the two is self-evident. It occurred to me a few weeks ago that perhaps the discourse around and protocols relating to COVID have intensified these patterns of thought. Nowadays, it feels as though you must disclose even the slightest ailment, and that even if you do not end up having the virus, you set off a chain reaction of cancellations, testings, alerts, text threads, Plan Bs. I am not saying anything about the validity of these new protocols, but I am aware that they are digging into and exaggerating grooves of anxiety into which I already burrowed. Having a cold is no longer having a cold. It’s a — could it be? who do I alert? who needs to test? what will happen if I’m positive? — domino effect. The amplification of what might be “just a cold” mandated by the current COVID context feels eerily similar to trains of thought that come barreling through my mind no matter the circumstance.

I am sharing this perhaps niche insight because it was helpful — relieving? — to forge that connection. It helped me get a grip on why I have been so worried about every last symptom that has come through our household this year. It has given me a new perch: “OK, you’re worried. But you are probably disproportionately worried because of the current context.” I immediately feel a bit of a release, as if the room has grown ever so slightly bigger. Then I turn to my tried-and-true strategies, which usually involve discussing my worries and observations with Mr. Magpie, who has an impossibly even keel, and who helps me lay out a practical, tactical plan that hinges on making the child as comfortable as possible and then waiting 24 hours to see if things are improving or not. I must say that a good measure of ailments in our home go away or improve in 24 hours — an accounting that itself provides relief.

More recently, I have found that one thing that can really help me if I am up late fretting along these lines is a very simple, almost unremarkable line from the Bible. I recently learned that it is one of the most-commonly repeated phrases in the Bible, appearing 365 distinct times:

“Be not afraid.”

Its simplicity brings to mind the quote I repeated to myself during my son’s c-section: “Focus on me / not on the storm.” Any time I am able to actually maneuver myself into a receptive headspace (sometimes difficult in the middle of the night, in peak worry zone), and I repeat the words “Be not afraid / I go before you always,” I feel as though the knot in my stomach disappears. I imagine myself as a steward of what is meant to be versus someone out there on her own, either overestimating or underestimating a symptom. I am able to edge out from underneath the weight.

What helps you when you are worrying? Has anyone else experienced a similar escalation perhaps influenced by the discourse around COVID?

+This adorable jacket is in my cart. The fit! The buttons! The sleeves! I NEED IT YES I DO.

+I just ordered these toothbrush holders for our bathroom (one for my sink, one for Mr. Magpie’s) and now I want to go back and order the entire collection.

+My sister has been raving about the beauty products from Caudalie. I have tried and loved a bunch of their items, but I am now eyeing their vinoperfect, which I know many of you love already.

+On a related note: European pharmacy favorites.

+Just ordered a few of these wire bins for various reasons. The first and most urgent is that we keep a lot of citrus in our home for cooking and cocktails and it goes moldy if you keep it in a bowl — so I bought these wire baskets to pre-empt the problem!

Getting a head start on January’s WYSF a few days early…

Q: I’m going to Saint Martin in January and am looking for dresses. Under $250 would be ideal.

A: Tuckernuck has a great collection of vacation-ready pieces in this price range from their house label, Pomander Place. (And you can get 20% off everything with code YOURULE) I love this striped dress (reminds me of Lisa Marie Fernandez), this cover-up with the fun contrasting piping, and this cheerful hot pink ditty. I also got a lot of wear out of this Lake “Patio Dress” on my beach vacation last summer — throw on over a swimsuit, or pair with strappy sandals and big earrings for cocktails.

It’s also worth spending some time digging through sale sections for great resort labels like Juliet Dunn, Zimmermann, Celia B, and Farm Rio — a few great snags I found doing some recon for you:

THIS TIE-SHOULDERED JULIET DUNN

THIS ZIMMERMANN

THIS POUPETTE ST BARTHS*

THIS FUN COVER UP

THIS FESTIVE FARM RIO

*I can’t tell you how popular this exact style was among the women at my parents’ country club last summer — I saw them on so many chic ladies!

Enjoy!

Q: Birthday gift for MIL just a few weeks after Christmas. Out of ideas!

A: I hear you! Two of my favorite unexpected gifts this Christmas were a Mosser cake stand (just gorgeous and so thoughtful since I bake a lot) and a pair of white tulipieres. Both completely surprised and delighted me, and were such elegant, thoughtful gifts since they map to my style and interests so wonderfully, and I’m not sure I would ever have bought them for myself. Those might be a bit niche but also seem like things many women would appreciate. Beautiful objects that they might use themselves!

If those aren’t a fit, what about some beautiful (and slightly cheeky) stationery from Dear Annabelle, a Westman Atelier beauty set, a Dudley Stephens fleece in a pretty shade of pink, a set of GIR baking gear and new baking cookbook, or a set of beautiful bow-embroidered placemats?

Q: A warm bathrobe flattering on short-waisted women.

A: I’m not sure if this suggests you are petite? But I find this Weezie robe to be the one I reach for the most frequently — I’m 5’0 and it is perfect on me whereas many robes, the built-in sash hits too low on my body and makes for a baggy look. I know you said “warm” but the short-sleeves are honestly genius since I never have to worry about soaking the cuffs while washing my face / doing dishes in the morning.

Q: Black pants that aren’t leggings.

A: I know many Magpies absolutely love these ponte-material Emerson Fry layering pants. If you need something dressier/for work, I love the stylish fit of this pair from Tuckernuck.

Q: Outfits for myself and a one year old daughter in a “motherhood shoot” in January.

A: So sweet. Baybala has some really beautiful pieces that coordinate versus match. They generously sent me some pieces a few weeks ago and I was honestly blown away by the attention to detail/thoughtfulness of design. (Little things, like making the girl’s plaquet buttons actually be snaps so they can get into/out of the dress themselves.). I love the idea of this on you, this on baby. (I wore this and my daughter wore this.). I also love the idea of a dress like this with baby in this. Or go super formal with you in this and her in this, or you in this and her in this.

Q: Hosting best friend’s baby shower in January for baby girl! I need a chic/sweet dress.

A: My first thoughts were this elegant Self-Portrait, this Batsheva, or this sophisticated Damaris Bailey. I’ve also been personally trying to figure out a venue in which to wear this fabulous tweed mini from Self-Portrait, styled over a white tissue turtleneck or crisp white button down (Cher vibes). I also love this Cleobella, this Anna Cate, and this Doen.

Q: A new hair blow dryer.

A: People go crazy over Dyson (<<$50 off here). I talked to my hair stylist about it yesterday and he said he was impressed with it, but that he prefers his Parlux. I would trust his word implicitly — he is easily the best hair stylist I’ve ever gone to (Ismail at the George Salon at the Four Seasons in DC) and is a complete perfectionist. I’m still in a committed relationship with my Revlon One-Step tool (currently 35% off — be sure to get the 2.0 model) but would do either the Dyson or Parlux if I ever pony up the money to upgrade. You didn’t ask, but I did just buy this Olaplex heat protectant/styling product on Ismail’s recommendation after he used it in my hair! He gave me the SMOOTHEST blow-out ever and I’m determined to recreate…

Q: A date night top.

A: I have been surprised how much I’ve worn this feather top this season. Looks great tucked into jeans, trousers, a skirt — but with jeans, it’s the perfect not-trying-too-hard-but-still-festive-and-chic moment. I also LOVE this Baum und Pferdgarten. For something a bit more low-key, this Chloe blouse is sexy and comes in several great colors, and I love the silhouette of this Emerson Fry tucked into high-waisted denim.

Q: An easy fleece/pullover for mom life.

A: I would try Dudley Stephens (really get a lot of wear out of mine — a little dressier than a sweatshirt), Barbour, this fun patterned J. Crew (look for less with this), or this Faherty. Super affordable options: this steal (love the oversized pockets in front!) or this colorblocked.

Q: Maternity pants for a professional workplace, preferably not black.

A: This pair from Hatch would look great with an oversized white button-down, and Old Navy has a pixie-style pair in navy that would be perfect paired with an oversized knit sweater. I also think you could dress these “cargo style” pants up with a navy blazer, button-down, and polished (pointed-toe) flats.

Q: Everyday clothes for a toddler girl (2T/3T) in Chicago!

A: I like ribbed knit leggings like these, these, or these layered over cotton tops with chunky knits on top like this, this, or this. Or you can layer the pants underneath a sweet dress like this with a cardigan on top. I’ve also had good luck with cute sets from Zara like this. Pair all with Uggs!

+Tory Burch is offering 25% off all sale items, and you must not miss this gorgeous dress — I love it in each/every pattern/color, but the black will be a wardrobe staple and that purple gingham is so delightfully unexpected. I’m contemplating buying it for Easter! And if you’re into tennis or golf, check out their performance gear, like this top and this skirt.

P.P.S. What is the hardest part of your day?

P.P.S. Would you believe…?

On the Tuesday before Christmas, Mr. Magpie and I went out to dinner at The Dabney in D.C. It was the perfect pause from the holiday rush. We lingered over cocktails and Mid-Atlantic fare at the largely-empty bar, pleasantly marooned together for a few hours on a bitterly cold night.

I was reminded that night of a note I received from a Magpie several years ago, in which she wrote:

“Your relationship with Mr. Magpie is so tender and loving. Do you have a round up of relationship/marriage advice?”

I have carried this request around with me for a long time. I have felt wrong-footed offering advice on this front for many reasons. First, I feel too green: we have been married twelve years, but there are many couples far more seasoned who are better fonts of wisdom. Second, and I don’t write this to be cute or coy or self-deprecating, but I think Mr. Magpie is the magic. He is patient, he is romantic, he cares about a lot of little things that (I have observed) many men do not, he is a noticer, he is an equal. I could go on and on, but I suspect that no one wants to hear all of the reasons my husband is paranormal when contemplating her own relationship.

All that said, one tactical bit of inherited wisdom I have borrowed and found richly rewarding: remember to date your spouse. Any time we go out, just the two of us, I remember Mr. Magpie at 20, at the start of everything, thick into the headiness of the befores. Can you remember the thrill of the beginning? The way you couldn’t wait to see him/her? The way your stomach would drop when he/she said something flirty, or wrote something sweet over AIM? Sometimes I write about the beginning of us here on this blog, and I feel reborn. Going on a deliberate and mildly unexpected date (e.g., not to the corner restaurant, or to the convenient spot you both know and like) — to lunch on a random Tuesday somewhere adventurous, or for an 8 p.m. cocktail (e.g., when you’re usually curling up on the couch) at some ridiculous downtown bar, or to a controversial art exhibit — is the easiest way to unclip from “the everyday stuff” that can obscure or mute the magic of your relationship with your spouse. A few finer-tipped suggestions: 1) Eat at the bar. We always have the best, most intimate conversations when sitting side by side, and there is something winningly low-key and last-minute about the experience. Plus, you usually get better service because the bartender can survey your meal progress more easily than a server. 2) Arrive separately. We aren’t able to do this as much anymore in our current living arrangement, but in NYC, it was easy to ask him to meet me at a bar after work. There is something romantic about appearing in the door decked out to meet your date. He/she hasn’t seen you primping in the mirror, swapping shoes, spritzing with perfume. He/she just sees you at your best. 3) Controversial, perhaps, but I love this: have him/her order for you (or vice versa). There is something about belonging to each other implicit in the act, and it’s an unexpected surprise. Variety is the spice of life, etc.

This most recent trip to The Dabney reminded me of a quote from Matt Haig:

“How to stop time: kiss.
How to travel in time: read.
How to escape time: music.
How to feel time: write.
How to release time: breathe.”

Spending an evening with your loved one — really seeing him, really leaning into the conversation — is a surefire way to hit pause on everything that does not matter in order to take in what does.
