+MINI’S BASKETBALL WARDROBE. I mentioned earlier this week that mini is now playing basketball and taking hip-hop dance, and I’m enrolling her in a few camps this summer with athletic components, and she was woefully under-outfitted for any of it. All of my cute athletic wear finds for girls here, but the specific items I bought, most of which are seen in the top left corner above:

PERFORMANCE TEES IN GREAT COLORS

PASTEL CAMP SOCKS

PATTERNED SHORTS

BIKE SHORTS

PASTEL SWEATSHIRT + SWEATPANTS

NIKE TEES

PERSONALIZED POUCH

+COURANT MAGSAFE CHARGER. I pretty much have to keep my phone on a charging pad when not in use since I use it so much throughout the day for Magpie (and beyond). This one from Courant is so gorgeous — I don’t mind having it out on my desktop? The brand generously sent me this charging pad and I love that I can keep both my AirPods and my smartphone charging on it simultaneously without any plugging-in. You can also get these monogrammed — could be a handsome gift for a techie spouse. You can see mine above alongside my Appointed notebook, which truly sparks joy for me every time I use it. I love the linen cover!

+CHIMI SUNGLASSES. I’ve been getting a lot of wear out of a pair of clear sunglasses from Chimi I bought a few years ago — they feel fresh and different. Mine is style 005, which they appear to no longer make in the clear colorway I own, but this pair is very similar. They look a lot to me like styles from Garrett Leight, but a fraction of the price.

+MIRTH CAFTAN. This caftan from Mirth’s new collection stopped me in my tracks. I love the details! It looks like something you might pick up from a small boutique in Italy or something. These are the kinds of dresses I live in during the summer — midi/maxi-length, full coverage for ease of wear, a belt at the waist for shape. I would pair this with my Hermes Orans and be on my way.

+LARROUDE RAFFIA MULES. Cannot stop thinking of these raffia mules for spring/summer. Perfect height and style to pair with breezy sundresses. Would also look so cute with white denim and a floaty top.

+DAVINES OI CONDITIONER. I am absolutely losing my mind over this conditioner — like, genuinely cannot wait to wash my hair in order to use it. The scent is beyond and my hair has never — never! — felt softer or more detangled. I’m in love.

+CROPPED PUFFER VEST. How good is this $36 cropped puffer to throw on over your workout gear? More great affordable finds (many fitness oriented) from Amazon here.

+BEYOND YOGA SET. Currently in my cart: these leggings and this cropped tank in the chic navy color. I own a few of their cropped tanks and LOVE them. They are a really soft cotton. Would love to buy these sets in, like, every color…

+MIRANDA LAMBERT “PALOMINO” ALBUM. I am a big back-in-the-day-Miranda fan. I listened to her first two albums, “Kerosene” and “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend,” about a million times each. I distinctly remember listening to “Kerosene” on repeat in my garden-level apartment on R Street in Georgetown, while pursuing an M.A. in literature. The lyrics are evocative, inviting nostalgia and memory. I feel like she drifted from her roots a bit too much for my taste in her more recent discography but “Palomino” reclaims more of the true country feel of her earlier music. I love (!) “In His Arms.” Wow!

+LAKE PAJAMAS VALENTINE’S DAY JAMMIES. I bought mini the matching set and they are hiding in my closet until we get closer to the holiday — but I couldn’t help but break mine out! This is my favorite style of pajama they make (long top / shorts) and the pattern is so charming. These were generously gifted by the brand, but I have purchased many pairs on my own because I straight-up love the brand.

+VALENTINE’S DAY BOOKS FOR LITTLES. I generally give my children a themed book at every holiday, and Love Is a Tutu (already on our bookshelves) is a cute pick for a little love. In my cart for this Valentine’s Day: this one for mini; this one for micro. More picks below.

+BRIO SET. My son has been really into his Brio train set recently and I love the way he set up these bridges.

+ROLLING BINS. These rolling, lidded bins from Container Store are perfect for stowing bulky toy sets — we use them for Duplos, Magnatiles, Brios, Barbies, etc.

+HUNZA G PAMELA SWIMSUIT. This suit is at the top of my list for the season ahead. I can’t tell if I want the millennial pink one or the classic black. I personally prefer the thinner straps on this style, but this thicker-strapped Hunza G (20% off with code YOUROCK — these do sell out as the season progresses, fyi) is the iconic one that everyone obsesses over. More of my swimwear picks for the season ahead here, many on sale!

My Latest Snag: Doen Sale Goodies.

Doen is running a snow day sale that runs through tomorrow! I picked up this fun top to pair with jeans and this dress for mini. There were so many items that turned my head, though. I also love this metallic-thread pullover, this gorgeous dress (under $150), this dress for a little one, and this fall floral (perfect for a family portrait).

Weekend Musings: On Training.

I have never run a race in my life, but I signed up to run in a Veterans 10K with my Dad (himself a veteran of the Vietnam War, and a lifelong runner) and three sisters. I’m excited about running it with my family, but intimidated. I’ve never run 10K in one go. (I maxed out somewhere between 5-6 miles per run when in peak form in my late 20s/early 30s.) Beyond that, I’ve never been drawn to the hullabaloo around races — I hate crowds and find myself motivated just fine on my own, without the structure of a competition. And so I peppered a girlfriend of mine who has run multiple half-marathons with questions about training for a race earlier this week. I asked how she motivates herself to go on the longer runs, which daunt me — I am routinely bored and anxious to curtail my run by around mile 3. (I currently run 3.5-4 miles per session.) She commented that new, peppy playlists help, and that she also likes to call her mother or sister while on the distance runs. I was startled by this — how could she talk while running? She replied that, while training, you don’t want to be running so hard you’re out of breath. You’re building endurance; you should be able to hold a conversation while training. This throwaway comment blew my mind. I realized that I don’t know how to train. I am always running full-out, unless I am unable to. I’m not sprinting, exactly, but I am always running at the outer limit of my comfort zone, just faster than I’d like to but not so fast that when I stop, I’m gasping for air. The thought that I might run, deliberately, at a slower (easier) pace has literally never entered my mind. This is in part because running is, for me, more of a tonic than a treat: something healthful I must do to feel good, but that I don’t particularly savor while undertaking. In fact, I was listening to Taylor Swift’s “Midnights” album on my run this morning, and the lyric from “Labyrinth” in which she says: “It only hurts this much right now” / Was what I was thinkin’ / the whole time / Breathe in, breathe through, / breathe deep, breathe out” had particular resonance. I am basically always “thinking / the whole time” how much running hurts — but also aware that it only “hurts right now.” I live for the post-run lift. Running is worth the transitory discomfort because I feel so much better afterward. The world is brighter, my mind is clearer, my body feels loose and my muscles pleasantly firm. And so I tend to run as fast as I can to just get through it. Why would I linger in the discomfort? Why would I protract the process?

I can tell that training for this 10K is going to require a new mentality.

This insight made me wonder whether I am “always sprinting” in other parts of my life that I don’t necessarily need to? Are there other places that I have similarly never thought about “slowing down”? I certainly feel this way about my writing practice. I am rigorous to the point of fanatical about getting my writing in every day. Do I need to be, I wonder?

What about you? Are there areas of your life where you are always “going all out” without needing to?

My cousin just had a baby and I was reminded of all the things I loved for my babies when they were itty bitty. The first few items that sprang to mind were Kissy Kissy footies (so soft and durable, and what both of my children lived in for the first six months of life — I passed each and everyone down to cousins/children of my friends), these fleece booties (the only thing I could find that actually stayed on my babies’ feet), and this Baby Bjorn carrier, seen above. I treasure the photo above of my grumpy little baby, being schlepped against his will up and down the streets of Manhattan. I couldn’t have survived raising two young children in New York City without that carrier! I think he lived in it for the first six months of his life.

I was also really grateful for these Avent bottles, which both of my children immediately took to (I know some babies are picky about the nipple, and we had a few brands that my children summarily refused). I liked that they came in various sizes, including a small 4 oz one, that they were easy to clean (minimal parts), and that you can buy different “speed” nipples to suit the needs of your baby. I remember mini got so frustrated with the slower speed ones, but micro used the slow speed ones for the entirety of his newborn days.

P.S. On going from 0-1 vs 1-2 children.

P.P.S. Practical thoughts on preparing for a second child.

P.P.P.S. Motherhood is a surfeit.

I received a lovely note from a Magpie last week in which she shared that she’d finally encountered “a year that answered instead of asked.” (Is this year asking or answering for you?) For her, a part of “the answer” was the purchase of a forever home in the midst of a stressful home-buying market. Though she is relieved to be on the downslope, she asked: “Do you have any words of wisdom, practical tips, etc on packing, moving, unpacking, and settling in with a young child?”

I have so many thoughts on this that I have trotted out to myself and to various friends and family members, not all of which hangs together neatly, but most of which promises comfort.

First and foremost, give yourself — and your child — a lot of grace during this period. Moving is a high-stress proposition. For you: drop what you can. Take as many extra days off as possible to ease the process. Say no to any and all unnecessaries. In the midst of stressful times, Mr. Magpie tells me to “close the ports.” Say ‘no’ to everything you can. Huddle inward. Turn off as much “inbound” as you can. This might mean shutting off notifications on your phone, saying “no” to all invitations or requests for participation for a two or three week period, skipping the book club for a few months. It’s not permanent. You are not hurting anyone’s feelings. You are conserving energy for a massive transition that will require a lot of time and logistics. For your little one, I found it helpful to talk early and often about the move. I remember saying to my daughter over and over again: “we loved it here, but we’re going to love it there, too! We can love both!” She really registered the move with some big emotions and observations (e.g., “But I’m never going to see my friend again!”) and one thing that helped was putting together a “New York Album.” I printed out a ton of photos from our time in NYC and bought some stickers and a little album and we worked on it together over the course of a few weeks. It was fun to write in the names of her friends, the places shown in the photographs, etc., and a physical way to help her organize the experience of living in New York into a kind of narrative. We did not do this, but I have found it useful during other moments of transition (particularly countdown to first day of school) to put together a countdown visual to The Big Day. We’ve done this in the past by simply crossing off the days on a calendar, but I’ve also seen people put together paper chains where each “link” represents a day, and you have the child remove one link each day until there are none left.

Second, remember that this move is the stepping stone to a new and fabulous adventure. Adopt my Dad’s fashioning: “You’re gonna love it.” Whenever the loan documentation or the negotiating with the moving company feels too heavy or constricting, take a breath, take a step back, walk outside, remember that this is the start of a new circle, and new circles are fantastic.

Third — and this was the most helpful to me during our more recent move — remind yourself that you have done this before. Though it may feel that you have “miles to go before you sleep,” you will get through it. Trust yourself. Know that you will slowly but surely cross every last thing off your to do list. You will arrive in your new home. And you will promptly forget (most of) the agony. I vividly remember walking down Columbus Avenue while positively contorted by stress on the eve of our trip down to Bethesda to sign the closing documents for our home. There was one last financial or legal document that had not yet been processed or finalized (truthfully, cannot remember what it was, which either demonstrates the severity of my stress or underscores the fact that it all gets done and you promptly empty it out of your brain), and we were barreling down 95 with our two young children first thing the next morning, and it suddenly occurred to me that we might not have gotten it all “done” in time for the closing? I was already working through mental contingencies. What would the seller say if we asked for an extension? Would we forfeit our earnest money in some way? You can imagine my spiraling. Anyhow, I left the apartment for a walk. It was hot and muggy and I was wearing a yellow sundress, absent-mindedly stress-marching up Amsterdam Avenue, and I started to pray the rosary. A stranger stopped me at the corner of 89th and Amsterdam: “I love your dress.” I remember feeling as though I was being touched by an alien, her voice a gibberish that slowly came into focus. “Oh – oh — thank you so much,” I said, finally. And just like that, I returned to planet earth. I swear that Mary was speaking to me through that stranger, reminding me that life would continue, that I would find my way through this, that there were so many other parts of life to attend to, that we’d made our way through multiple moves and stressful times in the past, and that I simply needed to live where my feet were. Or, rather, put one foot in front of the other.

Fourth, celebrate the magic of this transition. There is something poignant to me about the last night in a home. You eat pizza off of a moving box. You prop your phone up against a suitcase to watch TV. You see your home stripped bare, and you find strange nostalgias: the door jamb over which your son first walked, the scrape on the ceiling from your husband’s over-ambitious Christmas tree purchase, the corner of your kitchen where you stood and craned your neck for signs of life during the isolation of a pandemic, the radiator on which your daughter stood and shouted: “GOOD MORNING, NEW YORK!” The last night in a home is a time for remembering, and daydreaming. It is heavy with finality and also lit with possibility. Lean into that night — there are always hidden gems in the eaves.

On the practical side of things, some thoughts and observations:

  1. Designate a “DO NOT PACK” bag as early as you think of it, and include all of these items, which will otherwise be packed but desperately needed on moving day eve / moving day: Sharpies; spool of packing tape; scissors; plastic cups, cutlery, plates; sponge and dish soap; garbage bags; first aid kit; wipes; toilet paper; paper towel roll; cash (tips); a couple of envelopes; stamps; pens; a clipboard or something hard to write on; a big envelope (like manila size) for receipts, documents, etc; lots of snacks; hand soap; hand sanitizer.
  2. Mr. Magpie and I found it helpful to share “To Do Lists” using the Reminders function in our iPhones with one another. We added bullets for every little thing we thought of, from “updating mailing address on credit cards” to “renting a car” to “writing letter to landlord” and everything in between, and we’d regularly huddle together to figure out who should own what, and by what date it needed to happen. It was a relief to have one shared, central place to go and confirm that we’d documented the millions of tiny tasks that lay ahead. (You could also do this in a shared Google spreadsheet.). It also helped me organize my activities by date, e.g., “what needs to happen today, versus what can wait until next week.”
  3. For what it’s worth, one thing I wish I’d done when moving last time was rented a hotel room for the final night. We slept among boxes and it was not ideal for the children, who were confused and a little upset by all the commotion, but also — the movers/packers routinely underestimate how much time it takes to pack and we were just squatting in one corner of the apartment waiting for them to finish for what felt like hours which was so incredibly unpleasant with the kids, I cannot even tell you. Looking back, I wish I had left Mr. Magpie to handle the apartment and taken the children to a hotel for the evening, ordered room service, and put on Disney movies.
  4. Label boxes by number and room. Keep a spreadsheet indicating (generally) what’s in each box, e.g., – living room books, Jen’s shoes, medicine cabinet stuff, etc. You do not need a detailed inventory for most of it, but it’s really good to isolate anything valuable in a spreadsheet like that so you can find it quickly. And – God forbid – a box goes missing, you’ll know generally what its contents were.
  5. Buy more boxes and packing tape than you think you’ll need. Also – we ended up posting all of our moving boxes on Craigslist after we moved and some family happily picked it up – you might check there, too, for free or cheap boxes!
  6. Start packing earlier than you think you need to.
  7. Again, for what it’s worth (not always in the budget), we’ve found having the moving company pack for us worth every penny. It also means you can more or less live in your home until the last day or two without having packed all your pots/pans/etc.
  8. Stock the fridge with gatorade and water for movers / for yourself.
  9. For your little one, begin to put together a backpack full of activities that you can pull out at strategic moments. Lots of these “car activities” would be good for this situation. Dole out as your blood pressure rises. Ha. Games like Go Fish, Eye Found It, and Old Maid are also good ways to pass time while engaging with her.
  10. Have a few (fun! different! special!) snacks for your little one on the big day. I like to hit up Trader Joe’s for these, since I rarely shop there, and the kids are always intrigued by different packaging.
  11. A moving box is a child’s greatest dream. Keep one spare for her to decorate with markers, stickers, tape, etc.

I am sure I am missing things, and that other Magpies have fabulous suggestions to add to this list, but the main message I hope you cling to:

You will make it to the other side. One foot in front of the other!

A micro-post to share that you can get 20% off of Alice Walk’s winter sweaters now through Sunday with code STAYWARM. Alice Walk has become one of my favorite brands for elevated basics that hold up beautifully, are made of the highest-quality materials, and reflect thoughtful design. I have reached for this alpaca sweater (seen above, paired with these pull-on jeans, and in this post, paired with white jeans) all winter long — it is ultra-warm with a beautiful fit, and I love the slightly exaggerated width of the collar. Take your true size. I’m eyeing these cashmere mocknecks in the most gorgeous shades…

Not on sale, but I have to write a little plug for my new zip-up sweatshirt, which just arrived (seen below, paired with these jeans, an old J. Crew vest — similar here — and of course my Daybreaks). I’m obsessed with the length; it is nearly tunic length so it covers the rear (perfect while wearing leggings), which I like. The fit is perfection — long and lean — and the material ultra soft, with the perfect weight for layering beneath a vest/jacket. Cannot recommend enough. I think I have to go back for their crewneck style now. Also love their pima cotton tees, which again have a thoughtful silhouette and the softest, stretchiest, silkiest pima cotton.

This may be my most niche post yet, but I’m always surprised by how many mamas are going through exactly what I am at any given moment, so here goes: my daughter just started basketball and we are in the midst of enrolling her in a bunch of camps (some of which are athletic) for the summer, so I have been scrambling to find proper fitness wear for her. She is five but tall and usually wears a size 7 (sometimes 8) these days. I’ve more or less never purchased her athletic/athleisure-wear, but — the time has come. I spent a good chunk of my weekend hunting around for non-hideous options. I feel as though I’m staring down a timer as to when my children start begging me for Under Armour since (especially for boys) it seems like that is what a lot of the older children wear, but for now, I can still exert a tiny bit of aesthetic control…

I started with tops as I had absolutely nothing serviceable beyond an old Hanes t-shirt from her Montessori. I bought her these dry-fit tees, which come in great colors, a Nike tee (on sale for $12 and also in good color combos — plus, love the simplicity of the classic swoosh), and these J. Crew cropped long-sleeved tees in white and pink. I’m so tempted by these adorable ringer tees from Petits Vilains, but am holding off for now…

I then turned to bottoms. I’ve always wanted to buy her a Sol Angeles sweatsuit (no idea why but I love this brand — never purchased from them but always thought the waves iconography was so fun and distinctive), and I found a little trove of pieces by the brand on super sale at Saks Off Fifth, but of course in none of the size/color combos I wanted. I couldn’t believe my luck when I found the perfect pair of pastel pink joggers and matching hoodie from them on sale on the actual Sol Angeles site! (I might go back for this pastel blue hoodie and these shorts or these ones from the Saks sale, though.) I also have seen girls wearing these cute Funtasia Too athletic shorts so knew I wanted a pair for her. Though I loved (!) the florals, I bought her this pair for only $15 from Frilly Frog! (They also have a red gingham pair on sale.) Couldn’t resist the price. I also ordered her a pack of these inexpensive pastel ones from Amazon.

Last but not least, I bought her some of these J. Crew joggers and sweatshirts (mainly to wear over shorts while it’s cold outside and she’s going to/from basketball), which come in great colors and are currently on sale, too.

All the fruits of my research labor below…

Q: A 40th birthday dress.

A: Love this hot pink statement. Also love: this La Ligne, this Alexis (in my closet – runs small), this La Double J, this unflinchingly fab Staud. Ultimate: anything Carolina Herrera, like the floral gown seen above.

Q: Stylish second trimester options that aren’t leggings.

A: Storq has some really great basics, like tank dresses and shirt dresses, that you can style a zillion ways, and I like the idea of a knit midi from Mango (maybe go up a size to accommodate bump) with booties/boots. I also had some sporadic good luck finding fun pieces from ASOS — love this cable knit dress. For warmer weather, love tunic/caftan dresses like this, this, or this, which could be worn post-baby. I’ve also seen many chic peas rocking the long patterned maxis from Thierry Colson and Julia Amory while with a bump.

Q: I am going on a yoga retreat in April in Cusco Peru. I will be hiking, shopping and of course yoga. What do I pack, help!

A: Wow – so fun! Looks like it will still be pretty chilly there. I would pack mainly athletic wear that can be layered in different ways:

THIS TANK AND MATCHING LEGGINGS

A FEW SPORTY MIDWEIGHT PULLOVERS – LOVE THIS AND THIS

A CROPPED PUFFER VEST

SHERPA BELT BAG

FUN SNEAKS

LONG-SLEEVED TEES LIKE THIS AND THIS

A BEANIE AND A BALLCAP

EXTRA LEGGINGS FROM LULULEMON OR SPLITS59

ALO SOCKS

A SWEATSHIRT LIKE THIS OR THIS

JOGGERS

A PUFFER JACKET AND A WINDBREAKER (<<LOVE THIS ONE)

HIKING BOOTS

SHEARLING BIRKS

Q: Lightweight fitted black turtleneck sweater.

A: I think what you’re after is J. McLaughlin’s Arlette. It’s somewhere between a sweater and a top, with a fairly thick but breathable ribbed material. Love it. Otherwise, you can’t go wrong with Theory.

Q: Soft loungewear for petites.

A: I am petite (5’0) and I live in this Relax set from Lake. It’s not too long (and I didn’t have the set hemmed). I also love my Gap vintage soft classic fit sweats (and matching sweatshirt), available in petite lengths. They have a delightful throwback fit that reminds me of something Lady Di might have worn from the gym.

Q: Travel clothes for the 15+ hour flight to Australia.

A: I like traveling in nap dresses layered over turtlenecks and finished with ballet flats and a cardigan in a neutral/versatile color, like this, this, or this, and I usually carry a wrap like this (or this would be goals) in my carry-on. For a longer flight like yours, I might pack a pair of slippers (that don’t take up too much space) to switch into at my seat because my feet are always cold on airplanes. The benefit of this kind of outfit is that you can remove layers if you’re toasty or add layers if you’re cold, and then all of the different components of your travel day outfit can be useful while you’re traveling (e.g., cardigan, turtleneck, ballet flats, wraps all can be used and styled differently/separately).

However — I must admit I have not done a long flight like yours ever. One of my friends who travels a lot more than I do has raved in the past about traveling in Jenni Kayne’s Marina set (pants, top — you can get the look for less with this set) and chic sneaks like these or these. Comfortable, pajama-like vibes but pulled together enough to wear in public.

Q: Leather jacket.

A: Personally love this quilted ladylike take on a leather jacket, but if you’re after the classic moto style, check out the options at All Saints! Reiss also has some streamlined, modern styles that remind me of the investment styles at The Row. And for more of the aviator vibe — you can’t go wrong with RL.

Q: Outfits to wear for my new job.

A: Sleek black pants to pair with chic knits (or this) and fashion-forward flats. I also like striped button-downs like this and this tucked into polished, dark denim (if permitted) and finished with ballet flats. I’m also a huge personal fan of shirtdresses — they feel so crisp and pulled-together. I am loving this, this, and this. And I also think a straight-cut dress like this with gold jewelry and simple flats would be elegant.

Q: Clothes for Palm Beach in February!

A: So fabulous. I shared some favorite resort picks here, but a few more recent finds:

Q: I am graduating from law school in early June! What on earth does one wear to their own graduation??? I want to look grown up but not stuffy/professional. The ceremony is in Seattle and will be outside. I imagine I’ll need a dress for under the gown and another for a separate dinner with family. THANK YOU!

A: Wow – congratulations! I would personally treat myself to a sophisticated dress from Emilia Wickstead in a gorgeous floral — something that says “I’ve made it, but I’m still fun/fashionable/feminine.” Net-A-Porter has a bunch of spectacular options on sale — this, this, this. I feel like you’ll treasure it forever and find a lot of uses for a dress like that. A few other really pretty but grown-up options that also feel festive/right for the occasion, most of which are more reasonably priced:

THIS SEA

THIS BORGO DE NOR

THIS ANNA CATE OR THIS ONE

THIS LUG VON SIGA

Personally, I think you could wear all of those beneath your gown EXCEPT the ones that are maxi length (you don’t want to be tripping up onto the podium).

Q: Looking for a bridesmaid dress for a black tie wedding in Charlottesville in May (reception is outdoors, under a tent, so I think a full-on gown would be too formal). Bride is requesting that bridesmaids wear dresses that are midi or full length and primarily green, but is otherwise flexible! Have ordered a few options but haven’t found anything I’m in love with. Thank you in advance for any thoughts!!

A: A splurge, but this Cara Cara is spectacular and you will wear again. Also love this Ulla but I’m thinking it may be too informal for the setting/vibe — you might run it by the bride. This Reformation is darling, and how fab is this Alexis (50% off)?

Q: I am due with my first baby, a boy, in April and will be having my baby shower in early March in NYC. Struggling with the transitional season and of course bump (8 month!) friendly pieces. Theme for the shower is ocean/surf (my husband is a surfer) and I don’t want to be too “on theme” but would love something that would look put together with the blue/watercolor palette of the day.

A: Check out Mirth! They just launched a bunch of absolutely gorgeous painterly blue/green florals in caftan shapes that would work with bump. This is chic/different, and I love both this and this. Also love the idea of a Mi Golondrina dress for the occasion — festive, bump-accommodating, and happy. A shirt dress like this (size up one size and wear sash above bump) could also be chic. Congratulations — enjoy!

When I put together my “2022 Bestsellers by Month” post a week or two ago, I was surprised by the fact that many of us bought this fabulous swimsuit from Maygel Coronel in February. I wasn’t planning to go anywhere, but I was thinking ahead to the summer season — though maybe more of you all had actual getaway plans and were able to flaunt that statement in real time. I’ve been surprised by how many GREAT deals there are on swimwear at the moment — I suppose brands are offloading last year’s styles in preparation for the summer ahead. You can get a Maygel Coronel for around $100 here, and my favorite Marysia suit for around the same price here.

Last summer, I spent a lot of time at the pool, as I had both of my children in private swimming lessons on and off throughout the summer, and then we were away for a week at a house with a pool, etc, etc! I was surprised to find that this J. Crew suit was one of my favorites for the season, and it’s currently under $100. I sized up one size from my true size (took a 2 instead of a 0) and the fit was perfection for me. I loved the neckline and the thin straps, and it has a decent amount of coverage in the rear — I have to say that some of the designer suits are just too skimpy for my taste (I’m looking at you, Agua Bendita). This J. Crew was my favorite for swim lesson days because I could jump in the water, chase the children, etc, without fearing indecent exposure.

This year, I have my heart set on a Hunza G after SO many Magpies have raved about it. (P.S., for my expecting mamas, my sister wore hers all through pregnancy and now wears PP without any permanent stretching out.) This is the classic/iconic style that everyone goes wild over (20% off with code YOUROCK) but I’m a bit more drawn to the Pamela style with thinner straps — I feel like the thin straps are a bit daintier. I’ll probably get it in black but am tempted by this Gwyneth Paltrow pink, and this slightly bolder pink color is only $100 here. A variation on their classic style with a slightly different texture is on sale for 50% off here! BUT, ALERT — Target has a $40 style that is very similar to Hunza G out this season! Worth a try. Love that sage green color.

I also wanted to mention that Hill House’s swim skirt sold out last year — I wouldn’t normally reach for a swim skirt, but this one is REALLY cute and sporty. Pair with the matching top.

P.P.S. The magic and mayhem of traveling with young children.

P.P.P.S. What does your job say about you?

I am generally allergic to “new year’s resolutions” in the traditional sense — I’ve never been able to adhere to them for a full year, and they therefore feel like half-mast objectives. I usually opt for words of intention instead. This year’s word is “flow,” meant in the sense of: feel what you feel; if it lasts, let it stay; if it goes, let it go. I suppose I am aiming for close proximity with my own emotions. (Why do I tamp certain ones down? Why do I talk myself out of my own feelings sometimes? Etc.)

But, I did have one small daily resolution that seemed easy enough to implement and has yielded surprisingly rich results:

This year, I will not eat lunch at my desk.

Mr. Magpie and I love a line from “The Office” in which Andy Bernard (played by Ed Helms) says: “I ordered a pizza and I ate it like a rat over the sink.” We use this phrase as shorthand for any time we barrel into a meal/snack without proper plating or seating — you know, when you come home from an afternoon out and eat a handful of something right out of the bag, standing in front of the fridge or cupboard. “I ate it like a rat over the sink,” we’ll say.

Too often, last year, I was “over-the-sink-ing” it by working through lunch, spooning bites of leftover fried rice over the keyboard, or dusting crumbs from a ham-and-swiss baguette off my notebook as I’d draft by hand. I always hated the experience. I never paid much attention to what I was eating, I ate too quickly, and it was generally unpleasant to manipulate a plate / crumbs / messy meal while typing with one hand. I always felt half-in, half-out. Besides — I’ve written elsewhere that Mr. Magpie takes his mealtimes seriously, and he was constantly begging me to dine with him at the dining room table for lunch.

This year, no matter what, I have been pausing from my work to sit down at the dining room table or at the kitchen counter (with our new stools!) to enjoy lunch. I cannot tell you how much this habit has done for my sense of pace during the day. Even though I am technically sitting at my desk twenty or thirty minutes less each day, I find I am arranging my work into clusters that book-end around the lunch slot, and I find myself therefore feeling much more accomplished. For example, in the past, I might barrel through 1.5 posts in the morning, take a quick break to throw lunch together, and then return to finish the second post. Now, I will either break early (after one post) or break late (after two posts) to enable myself to really pause in between for lunch. I don’t know why the formal “break” has led to this new arrangement of workflow, but it has, and I am so grateful for it. Now when I sit down to my desk after lunch, I am starting on a new page/task/post versus feeling like I’m halfway done for a longer period of time. Beyond that, do you know how magical its been to sit, sometimes in quiet, but more often in conversation with Mr. Magpie, in the middle of the day? It’s a lovely, diverting interlude that makes me feel closer in some mystical sense to the real things that matter in life. I hypothesize this is because I’ve brought my values into better alignment with my actions, and I feel as though I’m vibrating with intactness.

All of this —

From no longer eating lunch at my desk.

I’ve grown circumspect about the concept of “optimization” and I actively detest the notion of a “hack” but I’ll be damned if this small improvement in my life hasn’t unlocked something in me.

Have you made any small daily changes to your life recently that has led to a similar sense of calm and completeness?

P.P.P.S. Even though the holiday season is over: a reminder to let your heart be light.

I recently came across a sappy list of “daily habits to practice for a better life” while infinity scrolling on Instagram. Many of them were canned, re-heated aphorisms but one went like this:

“Try to go an entire day without criticizing someone else.”

Magpies —

This challenge has proven difficult for me, an admission that is a strident comeuppance, as I have positioned “grace” (for myself, for others) as a daily intention for years now — and this practice proved a rough rubric to stomach. I was shocked by the fluidity of the petty criticisms: “C’mon, lady, pick a lane!” while driving, and “What on earth is he doing? Paying in pennies?” while waiting in line behind a protracted transaction at the till. They tumbled through my mind and occasionally off my tongue with untrammeled ease. And I was disappointed by the way I’d find myself censuring even ridiculous, unimportant things, like someone else’s chosen logistics for the weekend. What on earth? What an absurd waste of energy.

Of course, none of us are saints, and I think it is human to observe the behavior of others and contemplate the delta between what they’ve chosen to do and what we might have. Sometimes those differences are illuminating. Sometimes they help us double down on our own values, our own ways of being, and other times, they open new and generative pathways. (For example, I learned a lot about myself reflecting on the berth between myself and my former colleague, Nate.)

But honestly? A lot of the criticisms I clocked generated nothing. A fistful of zilch.

I’m grateful for the prompt because — though I can’t say the criticisms don’t form, unbidden, in my mind — I find myself aggressively swatting them away once they materialize. It is a new, metronomic approach to finding more grace in my life — something with more tacticality than, say, repeating the word “grace” to myself in the morning.

If you’re feeling up to it today, try it on for size and see what happens — do you find yourself more critical at certain times of day? In certain contexts? Are there small ones we can learn to “swat away” reflexively?

+I’ve shared these boots a million times, but they’re worth a plug every now and then, because they are my most-worn winter boot. They are ultra-comfortable, ultra-warm, and I love the ease of just sliding them onto my foot. I went up a size because I am often wearing with thick winter socks, and they fit perfectly. They are much lighter weight than they look!

+I’ve mentioned a few times how impressed I am with this hair primer/detangler my hair stylist introduced me to, and my sister has raved about the rest of the Olaplex haircare line for some time now. I just started using this shampoo on her rec and WOW — it really is clarifying! My hair feels squeaky clean afterward. I am probably in the minority here, but I prefer my haircare (and even lotions) to be scented — I know a lot of people have fragrance sensitivities but I LIKE a luxe scent that lingers. Olaplex is basically scent-less so I decided to pair with my favorite-scented shampoo, Davines’ Oi, which I haven’t used in years, and WOW. It is also an excellent product (conditions/hydrates/softens deeply), and the scent is beyond divine. This pairing feels like a dream. The shampoo thoroughly removes everything from your hair and then the conditioners re-hydrates and leaves hair silky smooth. It’s a fabulous shower experience.

+I love a white button-down with a little added frill/ruffle/trim. Great for tucking into jeans and pairing with ballet flats (<<love these silver ones) when you’re uninspired by your closet.

+I mentioned recently we’re in the earliest stages of thinking about going to Disney World next year and…now I can’t stop wanting to buy all things Disney for my children? Like do I need these adorable sandals for mini while on sale?!

+Sandals (for me) that spark joy.

+Tiny, portable, rechargeable vac to keep in your car. Bonus points for aesthetics.

+This printed dress is $100 off and so fun.

+Fab shades.

I am always surprised by how quickly Valentine’s Day materializes. I love making “minor” holidays like this special for the children — I usually make them heart-shaped pancakes or waffles (use this) topped with themed sprinkles and then mix a little red food coloring into cream cheese for a pink/red bagel sandwich (served with berries!) at lunchtime. I’ll serve them their meals using these melamine bowls and plates that I bought last year or the year before — so glad they’ve brought them back! It’s the little things. This year, I picked up these matching mommy and me heart pajamas for my daughter and I. (I would take your true size in Lake, but I’ve learned to size up for children — they run snug.) I love that they’re ideal for V-Day but can clearly be worn year-round, too. They also come in blue for boys, but I think I’m either going to get micro these or these instead, as I feel they’re more his speed. For some reason, themed pajamas have become a major source of holiday excitement in our house (my children especially love the Halloween ones) — they are great at reinforcing seasonality, and also adorable for pictures.

For daytime wear, I worked with Saddle Stitches (a wonderful embroidery shop — I’ve purchased several items from there and the quality is absolutely incredible) to embroider this polo for micro and this sweet sweatshirt for mini (which she’ll pair with leggings like these). I also have this dress (reminds me of D. Porthault) in my cart, but I find that her new school tends to have more restrictive “free dress days,” e.g., “wear red/wear pajamas/etc” and I know she’ll prefer the leggings and sweatshirt anyway. This solid pink dress with a red hair bow would be a good pick, too, because it can be worn well beyond the holiday without seeming too holiday-specific.

I also picked up a few crafty things for the children to work on as we approach the holiday, like this color-in banner, some pink and red play-doh, and this frame craft kit. Little projects like that go a long way in our household on the weekends / in the evenings and I love how they build excitement for the holiday.
