During a delicious nighttime porch sit with my sister last week, I mentioned that we’ve all been going through an adjustment with the new schedules, new spaces, new nanny, new school, etc., and that it’s been hard for me to set work-related boundaries with my children without feeling guilty about not being there for them at every moment during this enormous transition. More narrowly, I have been struggling with whether to keep my office door open or closed. I want to be available to mini in particular if she needs me, but I have also been finding it impossibly difficult to get work done during the week given a lot of interruptions followed by ambling chit-chat, which is lovely, of course, but also highly disruptive. I can’t tell whether it is better for me to draw hard lines and empower our new caregiver to totally own the daytime, or whether I should be flexible, popping in and out throughout the work day, available whenever needed, especially since mini will be starting school in a month and it’s really not such a long time. Maybe making this a softer transition would be better? Maybe it’s making things messier? There have been days where I have told myself: “Jen, you can catch up on work later. The most important thing is to be there for your kids right now.” But I can’t tell whether I’m just muddling expectations, or setting myself up for stress, of disempowering our new nanny.

My sister listened intently and then offered two powerful insights. First: as a parent, I cannot expect myself to solve every problem. That is, mini might well be accommodating a lot of conflicted emotions about this move, and I might well be struggling to get work done for that reason, but I can’t expect myself to solve every wrinkle in that equation perfectly, or scaffold a perfect emotional transition to mini’s new life here without a hitch. Her feedback made me realize that I have been imagining that if I can get the situation just right — be just available enough to her, be just focused enough on my own writing — I can ease everyone through this change with minimal strain. Ha! This new refrain (“I can’t solve every problem!”) has already been helpful in galvanizing my attention to focus on specific priorities and then accept that other areas will be bumpier, or out of my control, or by necessity left alone for the moment. Her second piece of advice was to have an open and honest conversation with mini, and to help her feel comfortable sharing all of the different emotions she has had about the move. I think Mr. Magpie and I do a good job in general of encouraging her to give herself permission to feel however she wants to feel. I can’t tell you how often we respond to her by saying: “It’s OK to be frustrated / it’s OK to be upset / etc.” before offering her some suggestions about how to work through whatever she’s feeling. But I don’t know that I’d taken the time to specifically ask her, head-on, about how she feels about this move. Perhaps I have mistakenly assumed she is still too young to fully articulate what she is feeling. When I asked her, though, she replied, unequivocally: “Sad.” (Heart breaking in her immediacy!) I replied: “That’s OK to feel sad. I understand. I feel sad about leaving New York, too. I also feel happy about having our new house and living so close to our family. Sometimes I feel two or three or even more different ways about something.” She nodded. We talked then about what she misses about New York, and she talked about the Natural History Museum (ha! her first reply!), our apartment, her school, and her nanny. She has been asking a lot about our former nanny in particular, and we have FaceTimed her a couple of times. A few nights ago, she asked: “But when we will see her in real life?” It was hard for me to say: “Probably not for a long time.” But there it was. I think the magnitude of this move is sinking in for her.

I have accordingly been trying to think of ways to help her realize it’s OK to celebrate our time in New York, to miss it, to revisit it, while also encouraging her to enjoy all the wonderful upsides of our new life here in Bethesda. It dawned on me the other day that it might be helpful to build a New York City scrapbook together and then look through it whenever she misses Manhattan. I just ordered her a scrapbook (in blue, her favorite color), photo adhesives, and a few packs of NYC stickers, and am going to print a bunch of photos of her and her favorite places and people in New York City (including some from our family portrait session, seen above). It might be cathartic for yours truly, too…(Note: for a more general scrapbook, this kit looks cute!)

At any rate, the scrapbook project has also led me to slowly begin to make my way through re-organizing all of our art supplies to accommodate our new space, and I realized we’ve run low on a lot of craft materials and need some new storage solutions. I am contemplating buying an art cart for a lot of our materials. I’ve bought several pieces of utility furniture/gear from the brand Seville Classics over the years, and am consistently wowed by the quality, so I’d probably go with their style (in a fun mint green!) and rest easy that the quality will be impressive. However, this one and this one come in even more colors, are around the same price, and get great reviews, too.

Below, sharing a few other favorite finds along these lines…

LIPSTICK CASE WITH MIRROR…THE DETAILS REMIND ME OF SOMETHING BY ANYA HINDMARCH!

Unrelated, but a few things that totally arrested my attention this past week: these scalloped edge nesting boxes, this $6 striped tee in the olive and white stripe, this Ulla Johnson patchwork dress, this polka dot dress ($59!), this striped cardigan (on sale for $150), these pink bike shorts, and this Lug Von Siga blouse.

P.S. Interesting to re-read some of my anticipatory thoughts about moving, written before we left Manhattan. The move is still too close in the rear-view mirror for cohesive insights, but so far, I feel mainly relieved. I’m not sure whether this is because moving is…the worst, and I’m just glad we’re done with that, or for some deeper, more existential reasons. I do think living in New York during the first wave of the pandemic was among the most challenging chapters of my life, and perhaps I’ve unfairly lumped the entirety of my experience in NY with that period and so leaving has felt like an unburdening, or a loosening of the leash on that parcel of gritty memories. We shall see…

P.P.S. A great trick for falling asleep.

P.P.P.S. I’m kind of itching to go back to the salon for an even shorter bob.

You’re Soooo Popular: Melamine Dishes.

The most popular items on le blog this week:

+Such a chic set of melamine plates.

+…and great bamboo cutlery to go with them!

+Plaid dress (40% off!)

+Puff-sleeved top in a great khaki color.

+Gorgeous hydrangea print dress.

+Reusable makeup removing cloths.

+Lovely swivel armchair at a reasonable price.

+Slim velvet hangers — the best the best the best!

+Easy-to-wear striped tee.

+Fabulous fall purse.

+Letterpress stationery at a great price.

Weekend Musings: It Doesn’t Have to Be the Blue Iris.

This Mary Oliver poem, titled “Praying,” struck a chord with me:

“It doesn’t have to be
the blue iris, it could be
weeds in a vacant lot, or a few
small stones; just
pay attention, then patch

a few words together and don’t try
to make them elaborate, this isn’t
a contest but the doorway

into thanks, and a silence in which
another voice may speak.”

Post-Scripts: Cocktail Napkins.

+Oyster cocktail napkins.

+Most adorable gingham one-piece.

+These battery-powered, rechargeable table lamps are SO chic for an outdoor dinner party! The height and colors are so dramatic!

+Love all of the prints that this skirt comes in. Wow! So fun and so easy to pair with a white tank/tee now or a button-down when a little cooler.

+Speaking of skirts — guess I’m in a skirt mood?! — still swooning over this gorgeous full white skirt, this slip skirt to pair with a crewneck cashmere sweater in fall (look for less), and this stunning drop-waist floral.

+Adore this “lime cherry blossom” print!

+Great striped basic tee for micro’s fall wardrobe. $6! Love it in the olive/white. I also have to say I have bought multiple batches of the face masks from Old Navy for mini over the last year — they are inexpensive, come in fun seasonal prints/colors that coordinate nicely, and I find they are the easiest for mini to wear. I think they’re the perfect mask for everyday use at school. Not so precious you’ll cringe at buying replacements, too! Will be buying a new set for fall!

+Such a fun sweatshirt for a little one!

+When you feel like everyone is criticizing you…

+Love this simple gray rug! I almost impulse-ordered it for my office, but I’m still not sure what color palette I want in here.

+Mini has proven to be highly prone to carsickness. I have heard children’s dramamine works well, and I might consider that for longer car rides, but this is a case where sometimes we’re just driving twenty minutes and she starts complaining that her stomach “feels funny” and I don’t want to give her dramamine all the time. Any suggestions? I did order her these anti-nausea wristbands to try — when I was having my c-section, the anaesthesiologist had Landon press down on the same pressure points on my wrist to help with nausea/shakes, so I’m willing to give it a go. I also found these anti-nausea lollipops but I have a feeling she’ll claim she’s not feeling well all the time if it means a lollipop is at the other end? (In the meantime, I did order emesis bags for the car, and THANK GOD for her washable carseat!).

+This cleansing oil is an instant-reorder for me as soon as I finish a bottle. I use it every single morning.

+SERIOUSLY chic gold and pearl ring. Looks one-of-a-kind!

+If you find yourself in the wrong story, leave.

+This gingham dress comes in such great colors. Especially love the sage green.

+Love the brand Mushie for unexpectedly chic children’s mealtime finds. This little snack cup is amazing!

+These floral Supergas!!!

+These are the days that must happen to you.

+Are you traveling anywhere soon?

UPDATE: I just added a new section of my shop with many of the fall finds below and a few others.

A Magpie reader summarized my aspirations for my early wardrobe best: “Feels like my 1996 wishlist all over again, in the best of ways.” I’m talking clogs and sweaters…with a couple of statement cardigans thrown in there, too, because I’m not yet ready to leave that feminine trend. I’m taking notes from the general vibe of the snapshot above — love the straight denim, slouchy dimensions of the sweater (is it ultra-coveted Khaite?! — look for less with this), and slip-on shoes.

P.S. “I think, in short, that good writing is about understanding the rules well enough to break them on occasion — but only certain ones, and only when handled thoughtfully and usually in the name of meaningful style. And I think the same thing in life, though I am nine times out of ten following the rules at any given moment. But that mish-mash of experiences set against the backdrop of childhood summers spent so close to nature and therefore, in my opinion, closer to the essence of life, abstracted from the trappings and complexities of modernity, well — they remain touchstones in my understanding of ethics, both of the linguistic and personal sort, and it startles me to think how often the two have converged in my life. Art and life and art and life in an endless mirroring of one another.” More here.

P.P.S. In case you’re not ready to think about fall. And even less ready.

P.P.P.S. My favorite beauty buys of 2020.

I’m currently making my way through a popular beach read People We Meet on Vacation by Emily Henry, and there was a great throwaway line by one of the characters about how “an easy laugh is one of the world’s most underrated qualities.” I immediately thought of my girlfriend Elizabeth, who was just that way, with laughter always close at hand. It was one of the many ways in which she made you feel at ease in her company. Her quick laugh was a gesture of her warmth, receptivity, generosity, and open-mindedness. I specifically recall the kind of surprised and delighted chuckle she’d issue when I’d say something out of character, or snarky; her laughter in those moments was shorthand for reassurance: “It’s OK to say something out of character. Just be you, and I’ll meet you wherever you are and love you for it.” I have been thinking a lot about her after moving back to the D.C. area, where I grew up and where we attended the same all-girls prep school. She had so many underrated traits, easy laughter among them, and one of my girlfriends summarized these qualities poignantly in a comment on one of my posts a few years back:

“Her gift was her attention — she never rushed you through a story, always laughed at the right places, and had an uncanny intuition about what was important to you.”

(This is a far better portrait of the woman than I have ever painted.) The attentiveness she is describing strikes me as another vastly underrated trait. It wasn’t just that Elizabeth was a great listener, which she was. It was that she was an active, percipient listener who had the emotional intelligence, expressed through well-timed giggles and knowing looks, to make me feel as though she was complicit in whatever emotional gambit had taken hold of my teenage mind. My God, she was a gem — just beautiful in every way. Missing her today.

What are some other underrated traits you value in loved ones? Let’s shine a light on those today.

Post-Scripts.

+I saw an interesting graphic a few weeks ago that said something like: “It’s a fallacy to think that grief shrinks over time. We just grow around it.” Strangely, I feel reassured by the sentiment.

+On the uses of sorrow.

+On writing, and remembering, to staunch the loss of a loved one.

+On observing the loss of my aunt at a young age. Still think a lot about my grandmother’s empty social diary.

+Something a bit brighter: when was the last time you felt really happy? Loved the comments on this post!

Shopping Break.

+I’ve observed a few fellow bloggers use a faux wedding band while traveling — check out the options from Adina’s Jewels! This one is simple and elegant, and how major is this one?!

+How great is this inexpensive velvet jewelry box?

+This top comes in such great colors (under $100).

+I’m always on the lookout for non-wicker/non-straw laundry hampers after a reader asked for one a few months ago and I realized how difficult they are to find. This one is chic, this shagreen one is glam, and I adore this one, which I have in blue in micro’s room and which my mom also now bought and loves on my recommendation. She actually mentioned to me the other day out of the blue: “I don’t know why, but it brings me joy.” I know what she means — it’s sleek, streamlined, and stylish. I love the nearly upholstered finish, and it comes in great colors! Plus, you can easily remove the laundry liner bag to carry to the laundry room. I found a very similar style available for $15 at Target!

+All my laundry gear.

+This new Kule tote is beyond adorable. I feel like I want it just to style it on micro’s bookshelves! TOO CUTE with some toys sticking out…but also, just so cute to carry.

+I know some of us are having smocking fatigue, but this cherry red style is…*chef’s kiss.*. (Imagine with the Kule tote!)

+Speaking of La Ligne, a lot of the La Ligne sweaters I mentioned in this post are a part of the Anniversary Sale, which is now open to everyone!

+Peony placemats for an outdoor dinner.

+I seriously considered buying Mr. Magpie this Hermes x Apple watch for Father’s Day, but was too worried because a watch is a commitment and I couldn’t tell if he’d be down with going digital in that regard. I LOVE the look.

+A crisp fall bubble for a little girl. More fall finds for littles here.

+Check out this adorable striped funnel neck sweatshirt for a little lady!

+Look at this repositionable wallpaper! Would be so fun against the back of a shelving area, or in a closet, or in a nursery!

+Super love this elegant and va-va-voom white dress.

+Chic denim silhouette (and color) for fall. Love with a striped tee.

+OK some seriously chic and fun statement jewelry here. I love this heart necklace and this heart bracelet.

+More reasonably-priced statement jewelry here, and some pretty delicate jewelry here.

+Wicker changing table organizers. (Also like these acrylic/gold ones for changing table top organization.)

+Inexpensive bins for basement toy storage in a pinch. I am really struggling to figure out how to organize all the children’s toys and gear in our new home — I think I need some bigger (i.e., furniture and cart) solutions, but, in the meantime, these are handy for keeping different types of toys separate, and would also be good in the large closet we have upstairs for keeping bulky stuff we don’t need out all the time in categories. As an example, I have a collection of Christmas books and toys for the children that I want to stow away for winter!

+More great toy storage options here and great bins/baskets by size here.

+This $128 top is amazing. A good Zoom option with the interesting collar/sleeves.

+More statement tops here.

+I didn’t realize they made Rothy’s in little girl sizes. How cute for school in the mustard yellow!

+My children have been very into playing with shaving cream at bath time. I just spray a bunch (of the cheap, foaming kind, like Barbosol) on the wall and they go to town “painting” and the like. I just discovered this colored bath foam and I think they are going to lose their minds.

+Bow shouldered tank in $55! Love it in the black.

+So sad these lobster swim trunks (currently on sale!) sold out in micro’s size. Meep! Too cute.

Getting to this month’s questions a tad bit late, but…here goes! More coming next week!

Q: Ergonomic chair for office.

A: Everything I’ve read suggests that Herman Miller gets top billing in the ergonomic office chair category. However, they aren’t the most attractive chair I’ve ever seen – – few desk chairs are, with the exception of my Laura Davidson SOHO chair, which was originally recommended to me by a Magpie reader whose interior designer recommended it to her, and now I’ve heard several close friends and many other Magpie readers chime in to rave about it too. I’ve now been sitting in mine for about two weeks on a daily basis and I LOVE IT. So comfortable and I love the design! Mr. Magpie was going to go with a Herman Miller but I think I’ve convinced him to try mine, too.

Q: Chic reading glasses!

A: Warby Parker! If you’re game for something a bit louder, love the fun colors that these Caddis ones come in (matte pink! pearl! whee!).

Q: Vintage style trench.

A: Love this – a great investment you will never regret and can wear at any age (and in most seasons). I’ve been wanting to invest in a Burberry trench for years, but you can get the look for less with this J. Crew, this BR (my first trench coat was from here and I wore it for YEARS when I went into an office), or this Mango.

Q: Sweaters for fall.

A: Girl, you’re reading my mind! Full post coming soon, but in the meantime, can’t encourage you enough to check out the discounted pieces from La Ligne I mentioned a week or two ago. Mine arrived and it is SO WELL MADE FOR THE PRICE. Like a J. Crew price sweater but 50x better made. The Nordstrom Sale just went public access today and I think I need this $129 pink one, too!

Q: A small writing desk for my bedroom.

A: I super love this PB style — simple, elegant, unfussy, and it comes with a handy drawer to hide your laptop/notepad. This leaning Sawyer desk from Crate and Barrel is so reasonably priced and comes with convenient shelving! I can attest to the quality — this is not, like, flimsy composite material. It’s very sturdy. If you are lucky enough to live close to Philly, this gorgeous vintage desk is available for pick up at a great price. I would love something like that — so unique, so sweet. I’m imagining sitting there writing letters by hand with it! And then this one is glam!

P.S. Chic desktop accessories.

Q: Cute but not too cute phone case.

A: You can twin with the rest of the Magpies with this faux Goyard case! I got mine in pink, but was strangely drawn to the green as well, and I own like one other green item in my entire wardrobe. Also love: this initialed style, this simple gingham, this chinoiserie, and all the styles and slings from Not Another Bill. More feminine: this floral or these bows!

Q: Non-coconut top Hawaiian outfit for a 50th birthday in September at a country club.

A: Check out Farm Rio! Tons of tropical-inspired prints and pieces perfect for a festive occasion. I think this one is my current favorite, but I also love this. And if you’re not looking for a dress, this toucan top would be fabulous with white linen trousers! So fun! Cara Cara also has a really fun (more expensive) dress that would be absolutely perfect for the theme (look for less with this BB Dakota). If you’re open to a looser interpretation, lots of really fun, playful, festive party pieces here. You might also find some fun beach-inspired accessories for the occasion here!

Q: Red suede ballet flats for fall.

A: My top picks would be these adorable ones from Pretty Ballerinas or these stunning Aquazzuras! I’ve never owned a pair, but people rave about the comfort of Chloe’s scalloped flats, and they are on sale in red suede!

Q: Twin bed duvets — simple, comfy, and affordable.

A: You can’t beat these classic navy trim ones from PBK, $99 each. Timeless! Matouk’s Essex is more expensive but similarly crisp and classic looking, and this S&L style is available in a chic green trim on sale.

I shared more bedding finds recently here and I just discovered that my favorite brand for sheeting, Boll & Branch, is included in the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale! You can get an entire sheet set for a queen size bed for about $100 off the retail price!

Q: Pregnancy-friendly dresses and undergarments.

A: Undergarments: the best thing I did for myself my second pregnancy was splurge on proper maternity underwear. I loved this exact style from Cosabella. For bras, I absolutely adored the seamless racerback styles from Amazon and Gap — have been wearing them all summer long and honestly don’t know if I’ll ever go back to underwire for everyday. (I just discovered a very similar looking style at Gap Factory but it’s unclear to me whether the Factory items are as well made as Gap proper. At $12/pop, maybe worth an experiment…). Alternately, you could buy these Coobies, which I had a few pairs of — they are actually nursing bras so can be used post-partum as well. Super comfortable.

For dresses, I’m sure you’re already aware of nap dresses if you’re a reader of this blog, and then there is a new brand called Maxwell and Geraldine that offers similar (smocking-centric) dresses, which will be your best friend. In general, smocking is huge right now and there are so many pieces that will work with a bump because of it — check out this gingham! I also liked simple tee/jersey dresses like this and this in black that I could pair with loud flats/statement jewelry/big headbands. Hatch always has fun pieces (love this!), but I had to return everything I bought from them because they ran so big. Frances Hart wasn’t around for my pregnancies, but I would have bought this white dress — so versatile, could be dressed up or down, etc. Some of these new Alice Walk dresses would also work early/mid pregnancy!

Q: Gown for a black tie dinner dance I’ve been planning for two years!

A: Ooh la la – this sounds exquisite! A few gowns that blow my mind:

Q: Wedding after-party dress!

A: Congratulations!!! This sequined white Markarian is SO FUN. Like, can you even?! I also love this Carolina Herrera, this simple silk number, this Alexis for a beachier vibe, this tiny white Amanda Uprichard (J Love Hewitt vibes?), and so many of the fun styles from Reformation, including the Nikita, this backless number in ivory, and the Verena.

Q: Dress to wear to an afternoon summer wedding.

A: Fun! This sunshine-y floral (under $100!), this Agua Bendita, this SIR, this Reformation in one of the floral prints, this Jonathan Simkhai, this SEA. There are also some great options here.

I know I’ve mentioned the Vogue spread where Hailey Bieber was styled as Princess Di a thousand times but I still think about it. Just perfect. I’m drawing major inspiration from this moment for my fall fitness wardrobe. I am specifically eyeing Free People’s distressed Metti crewneck sweatshirt, which I found on sale in several places:

ZAPPOS

BEST COLORS: NORDSTROM HERE AND HERE

ONLY $30 (!! CHEAPEST I COULD FIND) HERE IN A GREAT BARBIE DOLL PINK

MUTED LILAC AT NORDSTROM RACK

And don’t ask me how/why, but this similarly-proportionated sweatshirt in organic cotton from Frame is marked down from $178 to $44.

For bike shorts, I am unexpectedly drawn to hot pink ATM:

LIKE THE COLOR AND RIBBING OF THESE ZELLAS

SOFTER PINK FROM ALO — LIKE THE LENGTH OF THESE

ADORE THESE BEYOND YOGAS*

*As you know, I LOVE Beyond Yoga’s cropped racerback tanks. I don’t know if I own anything else from this brand, but the material on the tanks at least is SO soft and non-restricting, so I’m drawn to trying their shorts as well.

The only pair of “bike shorts” I own, and they aren’t even really bike shorts as they are a bit shorter on the leg, which suits my petite stature well I think, are from Girlfriend Collective. I love where these hit on my leg. They look so good with a looser-cut tank (or, come fall, sweatshirt).

I am also eyeing Lululemon’s Align shorts because…well, the Align fabric is second to none. Drawn to the gray sage or navy for fall.

Also: if you love the moment where Lady Di wore a USA sweatshirt with her bike shorts, treat yourself to one of these USA sweatshirts (I swear I had this exact one when I was six?) in a few sizes up!

Not specifically related, but I just love this jacket.

P.S. Loads more fitness gear here and here.

P.P.S. While we’re in the athleisure realm, love this slouchy sleep top and this cashmere blend wrap cardigan ($62!) for at-home coziness. (And lots of chic sleepwear here.)

P.P.P.S. Pretty gold necklaces here — wish I’d remembered to include the heart pendant from Hart Hagerty (j’adore) and this pretty MAMA necklace, which I just treated myself to!

**Heads up: Nordstrom’s semi-annual sale opens to the public (i.e., me) tomorrow! All my top picks here. I did end up ordering a second Nuna Rava elsewhere because (ugh, aesthetics) I wanted it to match our first one, which is black, and I just thought it would look better in our new car. I really love this car seat. I’m glad I went ahead and ordered because I think Dillard’s is the only place that still has it in black!

We are in a bit of a conundrum, as we are not yet ready to kick off our engagement with our interior designer but we are in desperate need of bar/counter stools — we spend so much time in the kitchen, and we’re constantly leaning against the island, willing chairs to appear beneath us. I guess that’s one handy part about taking our time with decorating — we are beginning to know, with dead-on clarity, which pieces we will use heavily and which can be de-prioritized for the moment. Anyhow, though our first project with the designer will be focused on the family room, the family room opens up into the kitchen, and so we want the space to all “hang together,” and I’m thinking specifically of having the valence over the kitchen window match the drapes in the family room, and it suddenly feels like picking bar/counter stools is very high stakes! Ha! So I’m not sure if we’ll just wait until we work with her and forgo bar/counter stools in the meantime, or get something we love now and work it into the overall space when we do. I have been doing some homework, though, and wanted to share some chic options in case you are in the market:

MR. MAGPIE AND I BOTH LOVE THESE CB2 ONES — SO UNUSUAL AND CHIC — AND THESE, THOUGH I FEAR THE LATTER MIGHT NOT BE VERY PRACTICAL AT THE MOMENT GIVEN THE UPHOLSTERED FABRIC (AM IMAGINING GRUBBY FINGERS AND SYRUP SPILLS AND MARKER SWIPES)

I KNOW MANY OF YOU ARE TIRED OF THIS BISTRO STYLE, BUT NOW THAT I THINK ABOUT IT, SUPER PRACTICAL FOR LITTLE ONES…CAN JUST BE WIPED DOWN! PLUS, I STILL FIND THE DESIGN CHARMING + LIKE THAT IT INTRODUCES SOME COLOR AND TEXTURE…THESE MIGHT BE THE WINNING TICKET

LOVE THE STYLE OF THESE ROUND-BACKED ONES; OUR DINING ROOM CHAIRS FROM RH ARE VERY SIMILAR!

THESE IN THE LINEN/COCINA GRAY COMBO ARE SO ELEGANT

THESE CHIPPENDALE STYLES ARE SO AMAZING — LOVE THAT THEY COME IN BLUE OR GREEN TO ADD SOME COLOR TO THE SPACE

THE FRENCH GRAY/BLUE COLOR IS SO INTERESTING ON THIS GORGEOUS CHAIR

LOVE ALL THE FUN FABRIC OPTIONS THIS ONE OFFERS

CAN’T BEAT THE PRICE OF THESE, AND LOVE THE MOODY BLUE…IT HAS CROSSED MY MIND THAT MAYBE WE BUY THESE AND SELL/DONATE WHEN WE’RE READY TO SERIOUSLY COMMIT TO A PERMANENT SET, OR MAYBE WE’LL JUST LOVE THEM SO MUCH WE’LL KEEP THEM!

The other areas I’ve been looking at in my home are the children’s rooms. We are missing a lot of pieces for them since mini’s room in NYC doubled as the playroom — it was actually enormous for a bedroom so this worked nicely, but now we have a proper play room for them in addition to nice sized bedrooms for both of them — and micro’s room was what the NYC real estate market refers to as “a maid’s room.” It was itty bitty, and right off the kitchen, without enough space for even a glider! A few pieces I’m eyeing for them…

+A glider for micro’s room. We are well beyond the nursing/bottle-feeding days, but I still think it’d be cozy to rock in there with him. We read books together all the time — usually on the floor of his bedroom — and I still use the glider in mini’s room with her ALL the time. Anyway, gliders. I’ve heard such good things about this one from PBK. I wish it came in more fun colors, but I’m guessing I would go with a neutral or gray and then add some fun throw pillows, or maybe add a bold contrasting ottoman (<<I love the stripes on this one!). I’m torn between that one and this cute rocking style (!), possibly with the ottoman I just mentioned or this navy skirted style in front of it. I also think this traditional style in the aquamarine blue is reasonable and attractive, this Monte design is ultra-chic (our bassinet was this brand, and it was so beautifully made and so chic), and this look-for-less style (under $300!) gets strong reviews, too. This leather style doesn’t look quite as inviting but man! It would make a bold and interesting statement. And this S&L is such an investment — I adore the large gingham fabric. If I weren’t positive micro will destroy whatever we buy, I might be tempted.

+Toy storage. We moved the Ikea cubby system that we used to have in mini’s bedroom up to the playroom, along with most of their shared toys, but there are still toys that they keep in their own bedrooms. I am thinking of a set of these La Jolla baskets in blue for micro for some of the bulkier toys, and these popular scalloped baskets for mini.

+A desk for mini. Mini will be starting PK4 this fall, so we are still a ways out from homework and the like, but I am beginning to want to move her toddler table to the play room and instead put a big girl desk in her bedroom in anticipation. I think she’d like being able to draw/work at a proper desk. I often find her laying on her stomach doing her little workbooks and the like — plus, it’d serve as convenient space to keep some of her trinkets and art supplies and would prevent me from buying an interim solution to “fill the space” that she’ll eventually outgrow. I really love this desk, and am contemplating it in the olive green of all colors for her room (!) but also may go with classic white or the pretty pink. All three colors are exceptional; I love that both green and pink are muted/not too childish-looking. I think the green would add a dusty sophistication to her room (and could be passed down to micro eventually, too). I’ll detail more on my thoughts on bedding below but it may explain the appeal of the green. I also adore this Jenny Lind spindle desk. So chic! And the optional hutch would add extra organization space. However, we did move the leaning bookshelves that used to be in our living room in NYC into her room, and so I might just go with this matching desk. I love that this solution is so reasonable but would afford the impression of built-ins and not block any light in the room.

+We are also thinking of converting her toddler bed into a full-size / “big girl” bed soon. (Hers was from Land of Nod — RIP — and no longer manufactured, but this one is similar, with its upholstered panels.). I’m thinking of doing this dusty pink gingham duvet (I’ve used this duvet insert in the past for guest/children’s rooms and it is great and so inexpensive) and mixing with Biscuit’s gorgeous Truvy print. Or maybe I’ll just buy the Truvy duvet set. The print is SO good. I would probably pair either way with this eucalyptus/sage green sheet set from Boll & Branch. If I go this direction, I think the olive green desk would look so crazy chic! Otherwise, a few other sets/pieces I loved:

THIS SET IN THE PINK COLOR

TBBC’S BELLE MEADE BOW…I THINK THE PINK IS TOO BUBBLEGUM FOR WHAT I’M LOOKING FOR BUT I DO LOVE THIS SET AND THE SWEET BOWS

THIS DUVET COVER IN THE SHELL PINK, PAIRED WITH THE TRUVY PILLOW ABOVE, OR MAYBE SOMETHING IN THE ON-TREND BOWOOD

MINI STILL HAS A GIRAFFE THEME IN HER ROOM…THIS PILLOW!!! WITH A HUGE MONOGRAM IN CENTER!

More to come! So fun.

P.S. Chic bedsides tables and chic lighting.

P.P.S. In case it’s towels or bedding you’re after.

P.P.P.S. The last day of mini’s school this past May was unexpectedly emotional for me. What a year.

Ladies! I’m posting this just a bit early today so you have a heads up that Lake Pajamas is running one of its rare sales today at 10 AM EST. This has slowly become my favorite brand for sleepwear — super soft, unfussy, cotton sets for the win, and they hold up beautifully. I take an XXS. I have a few sets in XS and they are a little too big. I’ll update this post as soon as the sale goes live, but I would go ahead and keep your browser tab open to see what’s discounted. I’m especially keen on scoring some of their children’s pajamas, which are often marked down to around $32 in these promotions — in the past, I’ve never been fast enough to score any on sale, as the children’s sizes seem to fly first.

Speaking of children’s clothing on sale, JoJo Mommy is having an outrageous clearance sale, with Lila + Hayes dresses marked down from $50 to $12 (?!? — like Old Navy prices, but in pima cotton!) and Little English jammies on sale for $18 (usually $62?!). Run!

P.S. In case you need to hear it today: it’s OK to loosen your expectations.

P.P.S. Related to bedtime: Nordstrom added some Boll & Branch sheet sets to their Anniversary sale, and you can now score a set for nearly $100 off. (!!). I have some in my cart but am convinced they’ll sell out at the stroke of midnight on Wednesday, when the sale goes live to the public.

I’ve been really striking gold recently while scrolling Instagram — there was this quote about people-pleasing that nettled me for weeks, and then this quote about avoiding danger that had me reflecting on risk — and now I’m back with a provocative definition of love:

“Love isn’t a fact. It’s a hunch at first. And then later it’s a series of decisions, a lifetime of decisions. That’s love.”

(This is an excerpt from a popular podcast called Welcome to Night Vale, of which I know nothing.)

I think I disagree with some of the speaker’s characterizations of love, at least as I have experienced it, but the quote drew me back to some of my musings on the very earliest stirrings of my love story with my husband. I understand, viscerally, the sense that “love is a hunch at first.” I don’t know your opinion on whether “love at first sight” exists, but it was pretty damn close in my case. I remember every detail about Landon the first night I met him — even the posture he assumed to accommodate the foot of difference between our heights, and the olive green shirt he wore, and the slight curl of his hair at the nape of his neck, and the way he intently listened — and I can’t say the same of any other person I’ve ever met. I mean: I took to him immediately. But was it love, even then, in some gradation of nascency? Or some kind of hunch that love might be close at hand? The more I think of it, maybe love is a hunch at first, an inkling forged by intuition rather than experience. I like, too, the way that “hunch” implies just the kind of vulnerable guesswork at hand in the early days of any relationship, during which I derived ambitious conjectures from threadbare interactions.

Picture this: you are sitting in your bedroom and you hear a familiar thump from downstairs. You immediately, possibly subconsciously, identify this sound as the shutting of a cabinet door, most likely at the hands of your husband, and you might even register which cabinet it is, perhaps informed by the slight creak that-cabinet-next-to-the-sink emits, or its relative loudness or muffledness in relation to where you are sitting. You can’t be sure, but you are pretty confident you’ve identified that sound correctly. That is what it felt like: the hunch that preceded, or gave rise to, the love that has borne all things in my life. A quiet, nearly subliminal, apprehension.

But I am less convinced of the rest. Can’t love be a fact? I feel that way in my marriage, where the love feels reflexive, automatic, beyond provocation or doubt. It is not that I rest on our laurels, or take the relationship for granted, but just that — love pre-exists my every thought. I do understand that the author might be getting at the notion that, to borrow from John Mayer, “love is a verb.” I can see this. Love is a muscle; it moves. Sometimes, and in some relationships, love must be called upon, galvanized, coaxed, for various reasons. Sometimes it does not flow easy. Sometimes it is, in fact, a series of decisions. But I do not feel that way with Mr. Magpie, nor does it feel that way with my children, or parents, or siblings. Love, in those relationships, feels to me like truth.

What do you think? I am confident there are many ways to experience and think about love. Do you think that love can be a fact? Do you agree it feels like a hunch at first?

Post-Scripts.

My Latest Snag: La Ligne Sweater.

I shared this post on where to find La Ligne sweaters on sale last week and was still mulling over a favorite at the time of publication. I ended up with this one, which I think many of you did, too — we sold out some of the sizes! I can’t believe the deal. I am beginning to contemplate a fall wardrobe at the moment, and the main shopping items on my list are new sweaters (so many of mine are several years old) and clogs. A few clogs I’m loving:

THESE NO. 6

THESE PASTEL BLUE ONES ($129!)

THESE EVERLANES (ON SALE FOR UNDER $70)

THESE J. CREWS

THESE EMBELLISHED FABRIZIO VITIS

For sweaters on my super lust-list, I’ve been drooling over this ladylike peplum Alexander McQueen and cool girl Khaite for a long time. I’m going to be sharing a guide to my favorite sweaters at all price points in the next few weeks, as I’ve been on the hunt for my own shopping list — stay tuned!

You’re Soooo Popular: The Clare V. Crossbody.

The most popular items on le blog this week:

+This Clare Vivier crossbody (perfection for fall — I guess a lot of us are beginning to think ahead to autumn!). I also love this discounted Clare V. tote for fall — the strap makes it highly functional for momming/working, and the suede is so yummy.

+Everyone loves this Mille dress as much as I do! I think of it as a slight departure from SZ Blockprints, but same general vibe/category.

+The key to organized cabinets and drawers.

+This chic striped pullover — apparently La Ligne’s bestselling piece!

+This ByTimo cardigan! Love all the details (exaggerated sleeve, pom poms!) and the versatile camel color!

+It would look fantastic with this very popular J. Crew blouse in the khaki for a little monochrome moment.

+This Horror-Vacui-esque $140 dress, for the third week running!

+Gorgeous Schumacher drapes.

+My new striped sweater.

+Birthday jammies for little ones.

+Under-$100 plaid dress — great transition-to-fall piece. Could be layered with a cute cardigan and booties/clogs!

+Our reasonably priced outdoor cushions! So smart-looking.

+PERFECT solution for our Duplo collection. Would also be good for collections of Barbies or magnatiles.

Weekend Musings: On Avoiding Danger.

Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than outright exposure. The fearful are caught as often as the bold.

-Helen Keller

Wow! What a sentiment, and particularly arresting coming from a woman who faced perils and barriers with which most of us will never contend.

How does this jive, I wonder, with my own reflections on risk-taking? It is both alarming to think that my elaborate precautions as a mother in particular may not matter and — how to put it? — difficult to accept that those who take the path of least resistance in their own career paths may still wind up “caught,” in the sense that I have long romanticized the stability and calm of pursuing a more linear career. Still, I like the empowering subtext: just do the thing, because you may be no better off or more protected by not. In other words: raise your hand, take the shot, make the ask, volunteer for the task, apply for the outsized job, make the move. If you were waiting for a sign, let this post be it.

P.S. Adjacent thought: “No one will advocate for you. You must be willing to advance your own objectives or someone else’s will supersede your own.” (Lots of interesting comments on that post!)
