Sweet cream, coffee. The slow rise of dough. The filigree of sunlight through the windows. The slippers waiting for my feet. The dew-awakened grass; the birds that never miss a sunrise. The first gentle things we say to one another. The dissipation of dream; the limber and gladness of sunup. The delicious slack before the onslaught of the day, before the gridlock of calendar and car, the strain for arrival or departure, the “click next.”
How to make the morning sunspot last? How to press my palms into its promise?
It helps, I’ve learned, to name the daybreak things you love; to let them sit beneath your tongue like an amen:
Thank you redbird for your song, even in the winter, when no one else feels like singing;
thank you sunrise for your steadiness;
thank you, morning, for this white canvas of a day,
on which I can try again

+Do I go looking for signs of the dead or do they find me?

Shopping Break.
+A propos of this post: it’s Early Morning tee season.
+WOAH love this skirt for a special evening out! I’d probably pair with a slim-fit cashmere crewneck in a green shade.
+A FAB cocktail dress — under $250 if you use code YOURULE. This is so good heading into fall/winter. Pair with tan or brown suede accessories or gem tones!
+A great sneaker look for less for those Totemes / Veronica Beards I’ve been posting!
+LOVE J. Crew’s latest girls drop: this cord jumper, this cord mini, this quilted jacket! For boys: this!
+I’ve heard this is a great layering tee for athleisure, casual wear, etc! Super fitted.
+Still a few of this cute patchwork quilted jacket left — but selling fast.
+A truly elegant dress for work — ideal for a big pitch, presentation, promotion!
+Just ordered this fleece to layer over athleisure. (Peep the Rotunda in the back!). I also love Varley’s offerings: this jacket style and this longline style.
+Love this collared sweater for fall.
+Just a reminder that this spectacular knit dress is still in stock…SO GOOD.
+A SPECTACULAR suede jacket.

You know your “happy corners” prompt? I think that would be a lovely addition to your relationship with your parents the next time you take them to lunch! Happy corners from kid side/parent side. The things you notice only in person.
I love the way my daughter says her name, “Margot!!!” like Dani Rojas hyping himself on the field. The way my son says “actually.” The contour of a sleep-slumped baby tumbling into my chest, the weight of their small limbs. When I catch them hugging each other. The way they’ll share their ice cream with me. The songs they sing with their whole chests… “Arabian Nights” for her and “Country Roads” for him.
The cassettes in my dad’s car, holding his big dry hand in church, the smell of the cookies he makes every Christmas, the way he has to wear a sweatband when he does the lawn because his eyebrows have gone bald. The way he dances. And takes couch naps.
I love the idea of asking this of my parents. And what a sweet litany you’ve shared here. Your dad’s “dry hand” in church! xx
I love mornings! Your post makes me think of Lamentations 3:22-23: “The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; His mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness.”
I love this — “they are new every morning.” Gorgeous 🙂
