What Are Some Small Ways to Romanticize Your Life?

By: Jen Shoop

Walk around your neighborhood listening to the “Pride and Prejudice” soundtrack;

Plate your lunch and serve it alongside a tall, restaurant-sized bottle of San Pellegrino sparkling water (bonus points: serve with wedges of lime in a little dish);

Read while soaking in a bath seasoned with a whimsical amount of bubble bath;

Use china bowls and dishes for mise en place! The degree to which my morning coffee ritual changed once I started measuring out the beans in a tiny floral dish cannot be overstated;

Wear matching (preferably silk) pajamas and hotel-style slippers;

Carry groceries and farmer’s market purchases in a straw basket;

Decant coffee into a silver carafe;

Invest in a robe you love (cashmere, terry, cotton, silk!) and wear it in the mornings and evenings;

Organize bathroom essentials — qtips, contact dailies — into vintage silver dishes and bowls ferreted out on Etsy;

Perform your own “turndown service” before you embark on skincare — fold down the coverlet, dim the lights, turn on your sound machine or calming music;

Arrange your current-season favorite garments on a garment rack — I keep mine in my studio and it makes me a) feel excited to get dressed and b) feel like a celebrity;

Spray your favorite perfume on your sweaters, scarves, bags — makes the everyday feel special and glamorous;

Light candles on a rainy night;

Try to fall in love with the season you’re in — celebrate its quirks and charms in specific ways, i.e., make a ritual of pulling down all your fall knitwear and arranging it in your closet while enjoying a spiced tea and “You’ve Got Mail”; seek out the hyper-local and in-season at the farmer’s market (scapes! morels!);

Merchandise your closet — i.e., fold jeans like they’re in a fancy boutique; arrange sweaters or t-shirts by color; put your favorite shoes on display;

More generally, merchandise your belongings — perfumes on a mirrored tray, skincare on a pretty marble trivet, jewelry in a delicate ring dish;

Write a letter by hand;

Buy a proper teacup and saucer and enjoy your afternoon brew in it;

Eat a croissant for breakfast at least once a month;

Store cozy blankets in a big, gracious woven basket by the couch;

Make a point of commenting on the beautiful: “oh my gosh, those roses!”, “the sunset tonight is spectacular,” “the color of your cardigan is stunning!” — even if only to yourself; somehow the saying of it reifies its appeal;

Curate a mood-setting playlist for mornings, work hours, happy hour, and bedtime;

Take your time in all things
