This Or That?

By: Jen Shoop

Today, a fun little parlor game to play. I’m sharing a series of prompts for you to answer in the comments.

01. TOO MUCH OR TOO LITTLE?

02. DORITOS: COOLER RANCH OR NACHO CHEESE?

03. REGRET WHAT YOU’VE SAID OR REGRET NOT SAYING ANYTHING?

04. STILL OR SPARKLING?

05. BIG PEARLS OR SMALL DIAMONDS?

06. NEW OR VINTAGE?

07. MOVIE THEATER CANDY OR POPCORN?

08. JACKIE OR MARILYN?

09. KETCHUP OR MUSTARD?

10. NETFLIX OR HULU?

11. FEEL EMBARRASSED OR FEEL AFRAID?

12. CHICAGO WINTER OR MIAMI SUMMER?

13. SIT NEXT TO JOHN HAMM OR JOHN KRASINSKI?

14. SEQUEL OR PREQUEL?

15. LAUNDRY OR DISHES?

I’ll go first.

01. TOO MUCH OR TOO LITTLE? Too much. There’s that fashion adage floating around: “Take one thing off before leaving the house.” I bullishly go in the opposite direction.

02. DORITOS: COOLER RANCH OR NACHO CHEESE? Cooler Ranch!

03. REGRET WHAT YOU’VE SAID OR REGRET NOT SAYING ANYTHING? The latter: esprit de l’escalier. I’d feel worse saying something I regretted.

04. STILL OR SPARKLING? Depends on my mood, but usually sparkling at lunch and still at every other meal.

05. BIG PEARLS OR SMALL DIAMONDS? Big pearls.

06. NEW OR VINTAGE? I wish I were more of a vintage gal, but if I’m honest — new.

07. MOVIE THEATER CANDY OR POPCORN? Popcorn, 10 out of 10.

08. JACKIE OR MARILYN? Jackie.

09. KETCHUP OR MUSTARD? Mustard! I’m a vinegar head.

10. NETFLIX OR HULU? I have no allegiances.

11. FEEL EMBARRASSED OR FEEL AFRAID? Embarrassed. I can usually work through embarrassment and/or laugh at myself pretty quickly. Fear can rattle me for a long while.

12. CHICAGO WINTER OR D.C. SUMMER? D.C. summer. I hate being cold.

13. SIT NEXT TO JOHN HAMM OR JOHN KRASINSKI? Hamm. C’mon.

14. SEQUEL OR PREQUEL? Prequel! Love the befores. I also find prequel writing impressive — a lot more constraints on the author.

15. LAUNDRY OR DISHES? Laundry. I especially loathe washing the cutting boards.

Your turn!

Post-Scripts.

+This Gucci eye palette would be such a fun gift to receive. The packaging is gorgeous. But I have to say I’m a longtime fan of Laura Mercier’s formula for powder shadows, and the colors in this palette are fabulous.

+This jewelry case!

    Sequel

    15. LAUNDRY OR DISHES?
Laundry! Folding clothes gives me an excuse to watch tv without feeling lazy

    1. Agree that Krasinski would be less intimidating than Hamm. I actually don’t know how I’d broach a conversation with John Hamm. Haha

  4. Always fun!
    01. TOO MUCH OR TOO LITTLE? Too little – againg myself but my Depression era parents instilled in me “less is more.”

    02. DORITOS: COOLER RANCH OR NACHO CHEESE? Ranch, please

    03. REGRET WHAT YOU’VE SAID OR REGRET NOT SAYING ANYTHING? I trend to speaking quickly and overthinking what I have said, so the first.

    05. BIG PEARLS OR SMALL DIAMONDS? Small diamonds

    06. NEW OR VINTAGE? New

    07. MOVIE THEATER CANDY OR POPCORN? Junior mints!

    08. JACKIE OR MARILYN? Eeep neither really but Jackie between the two.

    09. KETCHUP OR MUSTARD? Mustard- another vinegar lover here.

    10. NETFLIX OR HULU? Netflix, since I love subtitled mysteries that seem to be ubiquitous on Netflix.

    11. FEEL EMBARRASSED OR FEEL AFRAID? I’d much prefer to feel embarassed.

    12. CHICAGO WINTER OR MIAMI SUMMER? Miami summer (there is an ocean!)

    13. SIT NEXT TO JOHN HAMM OR JOHN KRASINSKI? 99/100 John Krasinski, as he is adorable and funny – but I might pick Hamm once just to learn more about his ex Jennifer Westfeldt who I have adored since she wrote and starred in Kissing Jessica Stein (I also loved Friends with Kids).

    14. SEQUEL OR PREQUEL? prequel

    15. LAUNDRY OR DISHES? sigh, laundry I suppose – at least clothes fresh from the dryer smell and feel nice 🙂

  5. First of all – the gumdrop garland is one thing, but I’ve never heard of Rebecca Gardner until now – what.a.fun.shop! Everything is so fantastically whimsical! You find the BEST stuff!

    And I can’t resist….
    1. TOO MUCH OR TOO LITTLE? Too much (leftovers are always where it’s at. Look at Thanksgiving!)

    02. DORITOS: COOLER RANCH OR NACHO CHEESE? Neither. White cheddar popcorn.

    03. REGRET WHAT YOU’VE SAID OR REGRET NOT SAYING ANYTHING? Regret what you’ve said, because if you don’t say it/ask it, you’ll never know.

    04. STILL OR SPARKLING? Sparkling – I love the fizz!

    05. BIG PEARLS OR SMALL DIAMONDS? Big pearls.

    06. NEW OR VINTAGE? New.

    07. MOVIE THEATER CANDY OR POPCORN? Popcorn. Even without the movie theater, team popcorn all the way.

    08. JACKIE OR MARILYN? Jackie, sunglasses and all.

    09. KETCHUP OR MUSTARD? Mustard, extra spicy and grainy please!

    10. NETFLIX OR HULU? Neither. Books.

    11. FEEL EMBARRASSED OR FEEL AFRAID? Embarrassed, because it’s probably all in my head…or a result of trying something new/foreign/difficult.

    12. CHICAGO WINTER OR MIAMI SUMMER? Miami summer. I’m done with snow.

    13. SIT NEXT TO JOHN HAMM OR JOHN KRASINSKI? Hamm! Totally agree with you!

    14. SEQUEL OR PREQUEL? Prequel. The backstory is everything!

    15. LAUNDRY OR DISHES? Dishes. My laundry and dislike of taming it will probably get me one day and stuff me into my own hamper.

Thanks for such a fun set of prompts!

    1. Oh I KNOW. I am obsessed with House and Parties / Rebecca Gardner. I actually purchased something from her for my MIL but won’t say what because sometimes she skims this little corner of the Internet and want it to be a surprise. But YES such fun novelty finds!

White cheddar popcorn! Are we talking Smartfood? Don’t think I’ve had that since college!

“Mustard, extra spicy and grainy please” — my kinda girl.

      xx

      1. I have the l page saved to go through in detail this weekend – it’s beyond my budget, but I’m looking forward to window-browsing! I’m sure your MIL will love whatever you’ve gotten for her!
And yes – Smartfood all the way. Mixed with roasted crunchy chickpeas!
What kind of mustard are you enjoying right now? I’m never one to shy away from another condiment purchase. My refrigerator door jangles with jars when I open it and I’m totally okay with that..

        1. I have been loving Maille’s Rich Country Dijon — my mouth is watering just thinking of it, wow wow wow. I also bought a few for Mr. Magpie’s stocking that were recommended by Magpie readers. Who recommended Lusty Monk to me? Was it you? I cannot wait to try!!!

          xx

          1. It wasn’t I who suggested it, but that’s now on my shopping list, and I might have to make some soft pretzels to go with!

  6. ooooooo I love these!!

    01. TOO MUCH OR TOO LITTLE? Having too little food for people is one of my biggest fear! Too little when it comes to fashion. In between for everything else.
    02. DORITOS: COOLER RANCH OR NACHO CHEESE? Cooler ranch
    03. REGRET WHAT YOU’VE SAID OR REGRET NOT SAYING ANYTHING? I put my foot in my mouth way too often so…the former
    04. STILL OR SPARKLING? Sparkling
    05. BIG PEARLS OR SMALL DIAMONDS? Small diamonds
    06. NEW OR VINTAGE? New
    07. MOVIE THEATER CANDY OR POPCORN? Popcorn!
    08. JACKIE OR MARILYN? Marilyn!
    09. KETCHUP OR MUSTARD? I am ashamed to say I have the ketchup habits of a eight-year-old let loose with a glass bottle of Heinz 57
    10. NETFLIX OR HULU? Both!
    11. FEEL EMBARRASSED OR FEEL AFRAID? Ack, feeling embarrassed is my #1 fear…so both?
    12. CHICAGO WINTER OR MIAMI SUMMER? Chicago Winter!
    13. SIT NEXT TO JOHN HAMM OR JOHN KRASINSKI? Both haha
    14. SEQUEL OR PREQUEL? Prequel! (I feel like I’ve often come up with the characters’ post-story life in my head and always end up disappointed by sequels!)
    15. LAUNDRY OR DISHES? Dishes. So soothing

    1. Haha – laughing at your comment on ketchup! I am the same way about fear of having too little food with guests — I ALWAYS over-order. Would rather have people comfortable to go back for seconds/thirds/extra handfuls versus eyeing that one last serving and wondering whether it’d be rude to eat? AHH!

      xx

  7. always enjoy reading these answers! The still vs sparkling question reminded me of the outrageously chic mother I nannied for in high school. She often met me and the children at a fabulous Neapolitan restaurant for dinner after she got off work at her avant-garde fashion boutique (seriously, she was SO chic.) She would always start with tap water and request sparkling water to be brought when the main course was served, which I thought was the pinnacle of good taste. I’ll occasionally request this at restaurants in her honor. Nothing chicer than owning your preferences!

    1. I can totally imagine the impression that would have left on me — it’s the subtext that she’s a woman who knows what she likes!

      xx

  8. These are so fun! I can imagine doing something like this at a gathering or to while away the time in the car during a long road trip.

    01. TOO MUCH OR TOO LITTLE? Too much! I have this strange fear of not having enough food at a gathering or bringing enough to a potluck.

    02. DORITOS: COOLER RANCH OR NACHO CHEESE? Probably nacho cheese, but is there a spicier version? To be honest my poison of choice is Cheetos white cheddar jalapeno. But I cannot/should not have it in the house!!

    03. REGRET WHAT YOU’VE SAID OR REGRET NOT SAYING ANYTHING? I’m someone who (over)thinks what to say and (over)thinks again after saying something. So it would be regretting what I’ve said.

    04. STILL OR SPARKLING? Still most of the time, but before cooking dinner I do like making a “mocktail” using sparkling water mixed with other things.

    05. BIG PEARLS OR SMALL DIAMONDS? Are you REALLY making me choose?! … Ok then, pearls. I grew up in the Philippines and we have these beautiful South Sea pearls in different sizes. Love baroque and keshi pearls as well. But there’s something so fetching about a delicate chain with small diamonds (like Tiffany’s diamonds by the yard).

    06. NEW OR VINTAGE? New most of the time. Vintage if I know the provenance!

    07. MOVIE THEATER CANDY OR POPCORN? Popcorn, 100%. But I’d rather make my own. I’m a popcorn snob.

    08. JACKIE OR MARILYN? Jackie

    09. KETCHUP OR MUSTARD? Mustard! So versatile.

    10. NETFLIX OR HULU? Netflix

    11. FEEL EMBARRASSED OR FEEL AFRAID? Embarrassed

    12. CHICAGO WINTER OR MIAMI SUMMER? Oooh this is tough. I don’t do well with extremes. I almost always say I’d rather be too cold than too hot, because I can dress for the cold (I did survive several winters in Cleveland OH). And the past few years, sun exposure has given me some kind of hives/rashes such that my doctor advised me to wear UPF50 clothing everyday in the spring/summer. So Chicago winter it is.

    13. SIT NEXT TO JOHN HAMM OR JOHN KRASINSKI? Krasinski! He just seems like someone who’d be effortlessly funny in real life.

    14. SEQUEL OR PREQUEL? This is a good one too! Probably prequel. The “backstory” is interesting to me.

    15. LAUNDRY OR DISHES? Depends — if laundry includes ironing, then dishes! If laundry means washer/dryer only, then laundry. I do not like to iron at all.

    1. Ooo I know you have some popcorn making secrets — dish!!

And yay for a fellow mustard lover! I’m not alone.

      xx

      1. I used to cook kernels in a big pot on the stove, but a few years ago I started using this silicon microwave popcorn popper which makes it so much easier and faster, plus it takes up less space in the dishwasher too. Then I drizzle olive oil and shower it generously with pecorino romano and freshly ground black pepper = cacio e pepe popcorn! I’ve also used nutritional yeast, salt and pepper, and dried parsley for a friend who can’t tolerate dairy products. Olive oil and za’atar is good too!

  9. 01. TOO MUCH OR TOO LITTLE? I think I’d like to be a ‘too much’ person (feels so fun!) but alas, I’m too WASPy to be anything more than too little

    02. DORITOS: COOLER RANCH OR NACHO CHEESE? Nacho cheese!

    03. REGRET WHAT YOU’VE SAID OR REGRET NOT SAYING ANYTHING? Regret not saying anything, you can always circle back but you can’t always take back what you’ve said.

    04. STILL OR SPARKLING? Sparkling!

    05. BIG PEARLS OR SMALL DIAMONDS? Small diamonds but also big pearls with small diamonds especially for earrings.

    06. NEW OR VINTAGE? Hmmm definitely vintage homewares, jewelry and handbags, there’s something so special about a beautifully patinaed piece of furniture, a well loved Persian rug or my grandmother’s jewelry. For clothes, though mostly always new.

    07. MOVIE THEATER CANDY OR POPCORN? Candy!

    08. JACKIE OR MARILYN? Jackie

    09. KETCHUP OR MUSTARD? Ketchup

    10. NETFLIX OR HULU? Hulu

    11. FEEL EMBARRASSED OR FEEL AFRAID? Feel embarrassed, somehow embarrassment is so much than fear even though it always feels awful.

    12. CHICAGO WINTER OR MIAMI SUMMER? Chicago winter or even better a New England winter

    13. SIT NEXT TO JOHN HAMM OR JOHN KRASINSKI? Krasinski

    14. SEQUEL OR PREQUEL? Prequel; what happened to form the characters as they appear? I want to know!

    15. LAUNDRY OR DISHES? Laundry, always feel accomplished when it’s done

    1. Hi Emma! Totally agree with you on the appeal of the prequel. I need to know all the backstories and details!

      xx

  10. 01. TOO MUCH OR TOO LITTLE? Too much

    02. DORITOS: COOLER RANCH OR NACHO CHEESE? Nacho cheese

    03. REGRET WHAT YOU’VE SAID OR REGRET NOT SAYING ANYTHING? Regret not saying anything

    04. STILL OR SPARKLING? Still, but I’m surprised how often I opt for sparkling these days!

    05. BIG PEARLS OR SMALL DIAMONDS? Small diamonds – I used to be big pearl so this is an interesting change!

    06. NEW OR VINTAGE? Depends what we’re talking about… clothes = new, furniture = vintage!

    07. MOVIE THEATER CANDY OR POPCORN? Popcorn

    08. JACKIE OR MARILYN? Jackie

    09. KETCHUP OR MUSTARD? Ketchup

    10. NETFLIX OR HULU? Netflix

    11. FEEL EMBARRASSED OR FEEL AFRAID? Embarrassed

    12. CHICAGO WINTER OR D.C. SUMMER? D.C. summer

    13. SIT NEXT TO JOHN HAMM OR JOHN KRASINSKI? Ooooh this is a tough one! Hamm is a fellow Missourian/Cardinals fan so we’d have lots to talk about but I think I have to go Krasinski.

    14. SEQUEL OR PREQUEL? Sequel

    15. LAUNDRY OR DISHES? Laundry – my favorite household chore!

    1. You’re probably right that Krasinski would be an easier seatmate. But still…

I am surprised there have been NO mustard lovers yet?!?!?

      xx

  11. 01. TOO MUCH OR TOO LITTLE? Too much and always extra
    02. DORITOS: COOLER RANCH OR NACHO CHEESE? Nacho cheese
    03. REGRET WHAT YOU’VE SAID OR REGRET NOT SAYING ANYTHING? Regret not saying anything as hurting feelings with what I’ve said feels far worse
    04. STILL OR SPARKLING? Still with no ice during the day and sparkling with lots of crushed ice in evening.
    05. BIG PEARLS OR SMALL DIAMONDS? Big pearls and lots of them (the extra in me!)
    06. NEW OR VINTAGE? New, though love and collect vintage cocktail rings
    07. MOVIE THEATER CANDY OR POPCORN? Popcorn hold the artificial butter
    08. JACKIE OR MARILYN? Jackie
    09. KETCHUP OR MUSTARD? Both, but my true love is Frank’s hot sauce
    10. NETFLIX OR HULU? Netflix
    11. FEEL EMBARRASSED OR FEEL AFRAID? Embarrassed
    12. CHICAGO WINTER OR MIAMI SUMMER? Chicago winter
    13. SIT NEXT TO JOHN HAMM OR JOHN KRASINSKI? No preference here
    14. SEQUEL OR PREQUEL? Sequel, love the suspense of what happens next
    15. LAUNDRY OR DISHES? Dishes

    1. “Too much and always extra” should be the tagline to your memoir :). So catchy.

Crushed ice and sparkling water! Never tried that but sounds like heaven!

      xx

  12. The gumdrop garland is adorable and a fun take on festive! Love it.

    Can’t resist a quiz…
    01. TOO MUCH OR TOO LITTLE? If I’m honest, I forget to wear earrings half the time – so I’m generally “too little” by default, if we’re talking style.

    02. DORITOS: COOLER RANCH OR NACHO CHEESE? Neither. My brother is obsessed with the “spicy nacho” and I think I’m scarred from the scent growing up!

    03. REGRET WHAT YOU’VE SAID OR REGRET NOT SAYING ANYTHING? Saying nothing – you can always say more later!

    04. STILL OR SPARKLING? Sparkling, though I try to drink a full Stanley every day too!

    05. BIG PEARLS OR SMALL DIAMONDS? Small diamonds, because I generally don’t do big – but right now I have a pair of gold huggies with small pearl drops that I love the most.

    06. NEW OR VINTAGE? New clothes, vintage furniture 🙂

    07. MOVIE THEATER CANDY OR POPCORN? CANDY!!

    08. JACKIE OR MARILYN? Can I say Audrey Hepburn instead?!

    09. KETCHUP OR MUSTARD? Ketchup.

    10. NETFLIX OR HULU? Hulu.

    11. FEEL EMBARRASSED OR FEEL AFRAID? Embarrassed. I HATE feeling afraid.

    12. CHICAGO WINTER OR MIAMI SUMMER? Your answer said DC summer, which is what I would have said — but I’ve never been to Miami, and at least there would be a beach there?!

    13. SIT NEXT TO JOHN HAMM OR JOHN KRASINSKI? Hamm, 100%. We could talk about our hometown 🙂

    14. SEQUEL OR PREQUEL? Prequel? I feel like sequels never live up to originals.

    15. LAUNDRY OR DISHES? Laundry, always. My husband and I have a pretty strict split on this!

    1. Love my contrarian Audrey coming out here! I agree with you on sequels — almost always inferior, with a handful of exceptions. Godfather II was at least equal to I?

      xx

  13. 01. TOO MUCH OR TOO LITTLE? The WASP in me unfortunately says too little. Lol.

    02. DORITOS: COOLER RANCH OR NACHO CHEESE? Nacho cheese.

    03. REGRET WHAT YOU’VE SAID OR REGRET NOT SAYING ANYTHING? Regret not saying anything- you can always go back and say more later.

    04. STILL OR SPARKLING? Depends on the weather.

    05. BIG PEARLS OR SMALL DIAMONDS? Neither! Silver.

    06. NEW OR VINTAGE? A bit of both.

    07. MOVIE THEATER CANDY OR POPCORN? Candy- Reese’s Pieces, please.

    08. JACKIE OR MARILYN? As a fellow curvy blonde, Marilyn.

    09. KETCHUP OR MUSTARD? Ketchup.

    10. NETFLIX OR HULU? Netflix.

    11. FEEL EMBARRASSED OR FEEL AFRAID? Afraid.

    12. CHICAGO WINTER OR MIAMI SUMMER? New England year-round, please.

    13. SIT NEXT TO JOHN HAMM OR JOHN KRASINSKI? Hamm 4L.

    14. SEQUEL OR PREQUEL? Prequel.

    15. LAUNDRY OR DISHES? Laundry is annoying but so satisfying when it’s done.

    1. Hehe – I’ve gotten a lot of funny messages about Hamm/Krasinski. Didn’t know Hamm was polarizing!

I like this point: “You can always go back and say more later.” Yes! Also reminds me of a great quote: “Better to be thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.”

      xx

  14. 01. TOO MUCH OR TOO LITTLE? I think I usually go one extreme or the other, probably leaning to too little

    02. DORITOS: COOLER RANCH OR NACHO CHEESE? Neither, tbh.

    03. REGRET WHAT YOU’VE SAID OR REGRET NOT SAYING ANYTHING? I’ve been in both situations and overthink it all.

    04. STILL OR SPARKLING? still.

    05. BIG PEARLS OR SMALL DIAMONDS? Neither–big, chunky silver jewelry

    06. NEW OR VINTAGE? New.

    07. MOVIE THEATER CANDY OR POPCORN? popcorn

    08. JACKIE OR MARILYN? Jackie.

    09. KETCHUP OR MUSTARD? ketchup

    10. NETFLIX OR HULU? whichever has a twisty thriller that I can get sucked into.

    11. FEEL EMBARRASSED OR FEEL AFRAID? Yes, though I’ve gotten better at dealing with embarrassment

    12. CHICAGO WINTER OR MIAMI SUMMER? Miami summer. I hate winter.

    13. SIT NEXT TO JOHN HAMM OR JOHN KRASINSKI? Krasinski. I don’t get the fascination with Hamm.

    14. SEQUEL OR PREQUEL? sequel

    15. LAUNDRY OR DISHES? laundry. If only I could have someone take care of dishes for me everyday….

    1. I’m with you so hard on the dishes! It’s my least favorite chore. I could fold laundry, make beds, vacuum, iron but the endlessness of dishes…I swear I spend hours of my life each week doing it.

      xx

  15. 01. TOO MUCH OR TOO LITTLE? Too much period!

    02. DORITOS: COOLER RANCH OR NACHO CHEESE? Not a Doritos fan at all.

    03. REGRET WHAT YOU’VE SAID OR REGRET NOT SAYING ANYTHING? Neither now that you and your husband have taught me the DNE rule! (Do Not Engage)

    04. STILL OR SPARKLING? Whatever my mood. Varies

    05. BIG PEARLS OR SMALL DIAMONDS? Always pearls! Cannot love them any more. A classic all around.

    06. NEW OR VINTAGE? New. I don’t see the charm in vintage as much as some. I do have a few items of my mothers I pull out for special occasions.

    07. MOVIE THEATER CANDY OR POPCORN? Movie theater candy. Especially Milk Duds.

    08. JACKIE OR MARILYN? Jackie, no question. If you haven’t read (or listened) to Clint Hill’s books about Jackie you should. They are very insightful to her life. Clint Hill was her most trusted Secret Service detail assigned to her as First Lady.

    09. KETCHUP OR MUSTARD? Like both but I use ketchup more

    10. NETFLIX OR HULU? Netflix, because I do not have Hulu

    11. FEEL EMBARRASSED OR FEEL AFRAID? Toss up

    12. CHICAGO WINTER OR D.C. SUMMER? D.C. summer, winter is so limiting.

    13. SIT NEXT TO JOHN HAMM OR JOHN KRASINSKI? Happy with either.

    14. SEQUEL OR PREQUEL? Prequel

    15. LAUNDRY OR DISHES? Laundry although it never ends
