A difficult week to create: the closed-off feeling of pipes frozen; lead in the letters. I found myself reading a lot of poetry, a comfort ritual I’d not maybe known about myself? Ross Gay, Lucille Clifton, Linda Pastan, always Mary Oliver, and each re-reading a new sunrise on my own thoughts. I was lightly holding, all the while, Ada Limon’s quote about poetry being slippery, and that slipperiness being a virtue. Her words simmered in the background. Maybe that’s what I was after: the door left ajar, possibility. The upper right hand corner of the page. The way, as Ross Gay puts it in his masterful “An Ode to Buttoning and Unbuttoning My Shirt“: “the honeybee’s / legs furred with pollen / mean another / thing to me / than on the other day / which too have / been drizzled in this / simplest of joys / in this world / of spaceships and subatomic / this and that.”

I found myself, in those marginal moments between doing more important things, collecting and curating on different canvases: a new little folder of “unlock poetry” saved to my Desktop; the linen pinboard in my studio (seen above); a Pinterest board of images that gave me the deep wellness feeling I felt while creating Small Wonders. All of these activities felt like forms of wintering, or maybe thawing.
