+WHAT ARE WE WATCHING THIS WINTER? This January, Landon and I have been tuning into some of the movies and shows nominated for awards in the coming months, and we’ve been really hooked by “Pluribus.” Has anyone else watched? A wildly imaginative premise that somehow manages to pluck on allegorical themes without feeling too fable-like; the main character is still rich and flawed. And the sets and shots are incredible. We’re only a few episodes in but very impressed. On the movie front, we were gripped by “One Battle After Another.” We went into it assuming we’d need to watch it over the course of two nights (it’s long, and we’re old), but we watched it in its entirety, on the edge of our seats–and I went into it skeptical! I was worried Leonardo Di Caprio was going to seem washed-up or self-aware, that his celebrity would over-dominate the film in it in some way, which is sort of how I feel about the movies starring George Clooney and Brad Pitt in recent years. (Sorry, I had to say it! Love them both but find they permit the cult of their celebrity to overpower their performances!) I came away with renewed respect for him. (And apparently so did Reddit — there is a small but mighty whistle scene that Redditors are obsessing over as one of the marks of his talent.) Benicio Del Toro and Sean Penn were also unbelievable in it. Next up: “Train Dreams,” a slower character drama that appears to be right up my alley. And on the lighter fare front, I cannot wait to watch “People We Meet on Vacation,” an adaptation of Emily Henry’s novel that was released on Netflix yesterday! What else are we watching and loving?
+IF YOU ALSO HAVE AN EIGHT YEAR OLD: I found this reel making the case for the magic of the age eight at once moving, true, and eye-opening. My daughter seems so mature to me; she has this wonderful, dry sense of humor, and can trot out an attitude like nobody’s business, but this reel made me stop and realize how precious and special this age is. She is so sweet, earnest, concerned with what is good. A good reminder for me.
+EYEING + BUYING:
+My book (!!!) — thank you so, so much for all the encouragement, excitement, and pre-orders! I hope you love it. I imagine it as a companion to your morning, played legato — something you can read in little sips. The photography in it is spectacular, too — the publisher did such a wonderful job with this. I love looking at the images; they stir something in me.
+My new splurgey sweatsuit (bottoms, sweatshirt)! I’d been hearing about these Miro sweatpants for awhile. So cool in the barrel shape. I actually ordered my set from Anthro but they’re low on sizes; also available at Shopbop. Love any athleisure outfit that feels polished! I had no idea how much I would lean on this clothing category in this phase of life, but I really do wear it a lot for drop off, casual errand days, that crescent of time before bed, post-workout, pre-shower, etc. (Look for less here, here.)
+Guest in Residence is running a great sale — they make wonderful, insanely high quality cashmere pieces in cool/modern shape (this is Gigi Hadid’s brand). You can score luxe cashmere for 30-50% off! I love this cableknit in the butter yellow, this oversized Barbie pink crewneck, this fun patterned piece.
+My favorite undereye cream. Have you tried this yet?! It’s the only undereye cream that actually brightens the area, as its a little tinted and has a fair amount of glow in it. I wear this everyday and I have to admit it was hard to motivate myself to apply undereye cream previously because I never felt it really did anything. This is an instant re-order for me. I’ve also heard great things about their “moisture veil emulsion” and radiant cleansing balm. (I use a face cleansing balm every single night — have used Elemis for years — but am intrigued by this hyped formula!)
+Speaking of sales: Jane Win is offering up to 50% off a selection of their jewelry. This includes a slight price break on some of their iconic coin pendants (I wear mine close to daily) and the clover pendant I’ve been lusting after in select colors.
+Chic home finds at good prices: this lamp I just bought for my daughter’s room; this blue rug; Matouk-inspired scalloped linens; candles for 20% off with code FINALPOUR.
+A launch I am loving: these new ecru jeans from R+B.

+MORE “UNECESSARY SAX” SOLOS: I’ve featured this musician before, but I absolutely loved his riff on Olivia Dean’s “Couple Minutes.” Just WOW.
+RILKE: Have shared this before but it gives me the best feeling every time I re-read it:

+OLYMPICS!: Already looking forward to the Olympics next month (and all the awards shows sprinkled throughout January and February — it’s as though the world conspired to throw us a bone during this slow time of year!), and found this reel of a husband narrating her wife’s “kitchen skating routine” as if he’s an Olympic judge charming and funny. “Something you don’t see often…the knee spin.”
+BESTSELLERS: My Warby Parker glasses! New year is a great time to refresh the frames. This particular style is great for petite faces.

My winter break was consumed by watching Heated Rivalry! Honestly, I’ll probably rewatch it again in January – hah! Other shows in the lineup include The Pitt, Traitors, any and all Olympic trials and then of course the Olympics, I also have several shows that came out last year that I meant to watch and never got around to – queuing those up during these cozy winter months!
i agree on Heated Rivalry! It is so tender and earnest and heartbreaking and heart mending. i think the physicality takes most of the spotlight in the chatter about the show, but it is so much more than that. Highly, super highly recommend.
Could not agree more!!
Thanks for sharing this! I was just texting with my SIL about this; neither of us have watched yet but I can’t wait to discuss with her!
xx
I couldn’t help myself and rewatched! Noticed so many new little details this time around. Episodes 4-6 continue to have me in a chokehold. Season 2 cannot come soon enough!
!!! OK on my list —
The book is gorgeous! Congratulations! On the series front, my husband and I just finished the thriller, All Her Fault and enjoyed it. Very suspenseful! One season, 8 episodes. Love the low commitment. I have a hard time following series with multiple seasons.
Anne – I’m so with you! One of the reasons why we tried “The Girlfriend” (not sure if we will finish) is because of its miniseries status. We are also big commitment phobes for multi season shows…! The writing is almost always stronger and punchier, the plotlines tighter and more well-conceived, when you have a single season situation. Anyway. Thanks for the rec! Added to the list!
And thanks for the kind words on Small Wonders!
xx
Jen, your book looks BEAUTIFUL! So thrilled for you!!!
Regarding the movie star of it all: this is precisely the issue I had with F1. I need to know who greenlit a script where Brad Pitt’s character’s dialogue is at least 50% a half-laugh. I didn’t hate the film but gosh, is this the state of things? We can do so much better than this! Hot take over .
Have a lovely weekend xx
Thank you, Aoife! 🙂
Yes, exactly! I love BP as much as any gal who grew up in the 80s but I felt the same way about F1!!
