+ENTRANCE MUSIC: A new album I’m obsessed with. It’s jazz but, like, narrative jazz? It tells stories, and perhaps this observation is shaped by the poetry of its title: entrance music. Music that opens us. Music that opens doors. Music that accompanies new beginnings. Music for athletes at the start line, poets staring at the blank page. Great work music. (And Aaron Frazer on the drums! His album “Into the Blue” was a deep source of inspiration or thought companionship while I was writing most of the fictional project I’ve been working on in little margins of time the past two years.) Albums like this make me wish I owned a record player. It’s meant for record!
+SALUTING PARENTS HANDLING THE DAILY BEFORE-SCHOOL GRIND: This video made me laugh (“Baby, I’m doing this video with my eyes closed because I’m tired”; also deeply related to the “one kind doesn’t like boiled eggs, the other kid likes scrambled eggs, the other doesn’t eat eggs”), feel seen, and open my heart to all the other parents doing the exact same thing every morning. Gusto, mamas!
+BANG STYLING TIPS? I’ve been humbled by my bangs. It has been a real learning process — for some reason one section never wants to cooperate. I found this video (in German, but you can just watch what she does) the most helpful and have been trying to follow her formula. Still working out some (literal) kinks. I find using a texturizing spray on my bangs is essential to getting them to do anything remotely similar to what I have in my head. Any other tips/videos/suggestions?
