“Eighty percent of everything that is true and beautiful can be experienced on any 10-minute walk.” –Anne Lamott
In this June morning, we walk the familiar streets of our neighborhood with our mugs in hand, seeing nothing new and everything newly. A raspberry waits in the backyard shrub; the now-in-bloom hydrangeas nod their heads in the somnolent breeze. The cicadas are not yet out, or maybe it’s not their year, but still, there is a sense of torpor settling-in. June has announced its residency.
We study the rings in the stump of the tree our neighbors recently felled. It was dead and threatening power lines with the incoming summer storms, but still, I feel somber as my daughter runs her finger over the timber, counting its years. Strange, how young it looks on the inside, the wood blonde and exposed. She carried her age well, I think, half-wryly.
I notice the crepe myrtles verdant but not yet blossoming. Their moment will come. After all, just last night, laying in bed with the sky not-yet-dark, I saw my first hummingbird through the window glass, and I had been waiting for their return all May. I noted the sighting in a little notebook I have been keeping — for what purpose, I don’t know. Some miracles simply belong on paper.
The time grows lovely and lovelier as it passes through this June morning,
quietly suggesting its own scripture.

+Poems that feel like a deep breath.
+Kindness, in its smallest denominations.
Shopping Break.
+Currently wearing this lived-in sweatshirt (has the best broken-in feel to it — just like something from high school) and our favorite “cool mom” shorts. Wore it on the walk this morning along with an oversized sunhat. This is my vibe this summer: no makeup, big straw hat, walking clothes, just to see what we see. Get out and move the body first thing!
+Of course, I was wearing SPF — swearrrr by this incredible tinted glowy sunscreen when I don’t have time or inclination to put anything else on. JEN20 for 20% off. Trust me, you’ll love it. Summer vacation skin! I wear the lightest color option.
+This ric rac trim white belted dress! While you’re there: for my racquets ladies, this raffia tennis bag!
+Julia just launched this wildly popular button-down in a classic summer stripe. Use code JEN-15
+Currently keeping notes on this joyful notepad on my desktop. Everytime I look at it, I’m delighted!
+Reminder: this best-selling “botox in a bottle” serum from Skinceuticals is a rare 15% off with orders over $200. I would bundle with these never-on-sale, best-in-class foundation drops!
+My new summer swimsuit — nearly sold out!
+Another really good skincare sale that just launched: 30% off sitewide at True Botanicals. My neighbor turned me onto this brand awhile ago; she swears by this rescue balm and now I have it and love it, too. Great for anything from dry cuticles to chapped lips and abrasions. She actually keeps hers in her car! I also love their bronzing drops — I mix one drop into my moisturizer — but their flagship product is their renew radiance oil, which is also superb. It’s like a slightly lighter / less concentrated version of the Vintner’s Daughter.
+A FAB second summer drop at J. Crew featuring this sardine rollneck sweater, these cruise shorts in cherry red, this dolphin hem mini skirt, and this Miu-Miu coded sunhat. This beach dress with the cherry detail is also really fun.
+A really good “beach” / summer sweater for $128.
+CUTE new arrivals at Marea — this dress (!!! — also available in a skirt) and this nautical skirt! Use code MAREA10 for 10% off.
+Reminder: 15% off sitewide at SoldOut with code jenshoop. I can’t believe the peony pink tee is still available! They also released my favorite LBD in an ultra-chic chocolate brown. So good!

Oh my gosh, charming! Thank you!
Excellent.
Thank you 🙂
…me realizing that Jen Shoop calling something “cool mom [fill in the blank]” is my kryptonite 🙂 Off to Rhoback I go!
Hehe 🙂
What a fabulous reminder, Jen! I’m so excited for our future early-morning city walks through the park and neighborhood… a joy!
Thank you, Sarah! I’m so excited for you 🙂
