Are you traveling anywhere soon? I feel as though everyone I know is jet-setting ASAP and AMAP (as much as possible) to make up for lost (COVID) time. We are beginning to plan for the possibility of a brief getaway for our eleven year anniversary and then a wedding in October, too. I am hoping we will finally be able to get away for a proper vacation — just Mr. Magpie and I — in 2022, and we already have a big summer beach trip planned with the children next summer in addition to my sister’s deferred nuptial celebration. Lots to look forward to!

It’s so fun to read about others’ travel plans! How exciting to plan a trip for just you and your Mr. Magpie.
We are mainly doing California road trips this year, as I feel like we have barely scratched the surface in terms of exploring what this state has to offer in terms of its natural beauty — we moved here and then had a baby soon after that, who admittedly wasn’t the easiest to travel with especially her first year when she cried all the time in her car seat, whew.
We are doing Lake Tahoe this summer (we go every year, I just cannot get over how beautiful it is), planning for Yosemite in the fall, but also want to look into somewhat more under-the-radar places like Mammoth Lakes and Mendocino.
Then possibly Hawaii in December as we cancelled that last year!
PS. I NEED that hat holder! Brilliant.
I know, I’ve so enjoyed reading the travel itineraries posted here. So excited to see the country in motion again…I also need that hat holder!! Genius!

Hi all…anyone have thoughts on a hard shell suitcase vs the traditional type? I am in need of a new carry on size after the zipper broke on mine, and I’ve never had the hard shell variety. Not sure how I’ll feel about packing in the two halves separately vs in one huge pile, haha. Although I am now #teampackingcubes thanks to Jen 😉
Oo, great provocation. I’m curious too! Anyone with strong opinions?! I’ve mainly used the traditional type myself but we do have one large hard shell suitcase…I don’t really notice anything different about it / have never really paused and thought “arg, this is annoying because…” but that could be because I’m also #teampackingcubes.

Hi Stephanie! We still use the traditional (“soft”?) luggage and we’ve been ok with it. My brother however had a hard shell (Samsonite I think?) that cracked after ONE flight. I also like the outside pocket in the soft suitcases for stowing away/accessing last-minute things like a reusable bag/tote.
And packing cubes all the way! It’s the only way I stay sane. I feel like I get a second-hand panicky feeling when I see someone else’s luggage without packing cubes!

Ooh I’m in the market for a new carry-on roller too. My husband has the carry-on sized Away & I have the checked-bag size Away and we like them! Like, not love, but I’m pretty particular… they’re a bit too cavernous on the inside for me. I prefer a pocket or two both on outside (ideally) and at the very least, on the inside flap (bonus points if it’s a waterproof zippered area and I can throw toiletries in there without fear of them ruining the clothes in the rest of the suitcase!). Liking the looks of that Paravel one though…
And I’ve been eying a Louis duffel for years – tell me more?! I have a beautiful pebbled grey leather Cuyana one, but was in the Louis store this week and saw a two toned black leather/black LV logo duffel… drool. So classic and chic.
I have a few trips on the horizon – a few re-dos from cancellations last year, and a few “why nots?” that were easy “YES-and-we’ll-hem-and-haw-over-logistics-later” answers, after a year of being locked down. Greece with my two lifelong best friends in a month (!!), followed by Napa (for work, but I’m not … complaining, ha) 48 hours after I return from Greece (help); then Spain in September, Mexico City for an F1 race + Day of the Dead festivities with friends, and Sedona/Grand Canyon hiking trip (again, work… yes, I’m lucky!) in early November. Plus a few weddings & bridal showers in New England sprinkled in throughout the summer/fall.
Wow, typing that out makes me think maybe I should invest in that new luggage sooner than later… ha!

I love the LV duffel. It’s classic and so stylish. It is also VERY heavy on its own (it’s thick, durable leather!) and I have memories schlepping it around angrily through New York with girlfriends while searching for a cab and then panicking when it started raining. Ha. So, not the most practical duffel if you’re hoofing it around / taking multiple forms of transit to get where you’re going. I have learned my lesson and mainly use it when it’s like — “toss in trunk, put on cart to be taken up to hotel room.” It does make me very happy though :). I got my NEW (married) initials embossed on the luggage tag a few weeks before I married Landon and I still remember the thrill of that. I’m glad I bought it when I did — it’s such an investment and it really marked the occasion.

Thanks for responding – that’s great to know re: the LV duffel. I know the feeling of cringing when nice bags/shoes are exposed to extra wear/unexpected weather, so I would similarly likely use the LV duffel on more … predictable travel outings! Love that you had your new initials added to it, so special!

I have my starry eyes set on Thanksgiving in Paris this year, though the mechanics and logistics are very tenuous. But! My husband has never been, and it’s a relatively easy long-weekend destination and I just love that city in November. On vera…
On the luggage note: my grandmother gave me a red T Anthony duffle and roll-on when I graduated, and they have really held up. I use the duffel more, as I can sling it over my shoulder, but the roll-on is perfect for longer trips (the red makes it very easy to spot).

SO many amazing ideas here; I bookmarked this post for future reference! I love the hat holder — genius! — and I fully agree re: traveling with a laundry bag to cordon off dirty clothing, esp. when on a long trip. I also must co-sign MZ Wallace’s bags — my quilted tote has been going strong for 4 years and I still use it all the time! I’d love to get a coordinating backpack but I’m unsure of how it’d be for a laptop, since I’m often traveling for work as well — what do you think? I love my black-on-black Fjallraven backpack for lugging a laptop.

Yay! So glad some of these picks are validated by a fellow detail-oriented shopper! Woo! As far as the backpack, it will definitely (!) hold a laptop, but you will need a protective/cushioned sleeve, as the backpack does not have much shape. If you are going to want it to be sort of structured/standing up on the ground, this is not the backpack for you. However, for toting a backpack to work/through airport, it’s genius because it is SO lightweight.

Hi MK! Totally with you on laundry bags, and shoe bags as well (two other things that give me second-hand panic when I see someone else’s luggage without it).
Agree with Jen on the MZ Wallace backpack, I use a padded laptop sleeve as I don’t think they intentionally designed it to protect a laptop.
Speaking of MZW, I was curious about their duffel bags, since I am such a fan of their lightweight construction/material!
Thanks so much to both of you for the intel! Luckily I already have a black MZW laptop sleeve (haha, I’m a cliché!) and now really want to grab the backpack for my summer (and future) trips!
Also, Mia, I am the same way about shoe bags — I have an entire stash of thin tote bags in my closet for storing my shoes that don’t already come with shoe bags during travel! They are MUST-HAVES.
