Best Transitional Knits for Spring 2026.

By: Jen Shoop

I assume many of you are combatting the same whipsaw of weather that I am: 80 degrees today, 40 degrees tomorrow. I’m wearing dresses but then my toes and shoulders are cold, or I’m wearing jeans and a knit but then I’m sweating in the carpool line. March is a fickle friend! Today, sharing a few fab transitional knits to reach for during this ambivalent weather phase —

+My top rec is this Alice Walk short-sleeved sweater in either the crochet or the cashmere. I own both and get SO MUCH WEAR out of them between the months of April and October. Here’s the charm: they add warmth but don’t interrupt the spirit of the outfit / don’t “tamp down” the airiness of a sundress.

+Two great looks for less I just came across: this Sezane and this Alex Mill.

+I also really love a thinner-weight cashmere cardigan during this period. Instant coziness/warmth when you’re contending with a chill but also look so chic worn over the shoulders, and have the added bonus of lending a look texture and softness. I really like the ones from Tuckernuck — the Pheobes are a hair of a bit heavier but have that adorable knot button detail (and come in really pretty colors right now), and the Rileys are just a touch thinner (the ice blue and pastel pink are SO gorgeous for this season, but I also fell in love with that richer peony pink as a foil for browns, pastel pink, mustards, and greens when I visited the store this week).

+The other cashmere cardigan I reach for ALL.THE.TIME is this Guest in Residence Jane. Slimmer fit than the Tuckernucks, and a more luxurious handfeel. They just released it in a popcorn stitch variation for spring — gorgeous.

+I am swooning over the scallop trim and perfect latte color of this Ann Mashburn beauty.

+We Magpies are big fans of pointelle, and I love these knitwear options that nail that trend: this butter-yellow-trim, this Gap (love the daffodil colorway), this Veronica Beard, this Leset, this Rouje, and this Sezane.

+If you’re looking for more of a transitional sweater-jacket that can serve as either a cozy outer layer OR a mid-layer between a top and a proper coat, check out Alex Mill’s Nico or Alice Walk’s cotton sweater jacket.

+For a fun, under-$100 statement: this AT! In my closet! Planning to wear tomorrow.

+Love the idea of this on its own or layered over a perfect white tee.

+Lastly, if it’s a true pullover you looking for (vs. cardigan) — something springy and cotton-like but then can actually provide a decent layer of warmth if you’re, say, somewhere up north, try La Ligne’s Marina or Mina Marina (incredible quality — the stitching, the softness/fiber of the cotton, the silhouette! I slightly prefer the mini version because I’m petite and I feel like the Marina can swallow me a bit, but love the Marina on others!), Gap’s look for less, Alex Mill’s Eastport, or J. Crew’s reissued rollneck.

P.S. Adjacent to this topic, if you’re after a “year-round sweater” — the kind of thing you can hang over the back of your desk chair, throw on over a dress or t-shirt while running out to grab the mail, etc, my top two most-reached-for knits that fit this bill are the La Ligne Marin cardigan in gray and the Alice Walk cashmere cardigan in toast. THE MOST ELITE KNITS. Beautifully made, wonderfully soft, can be worn directly against bare skin! Both run on the heavier weight side so wouldn’t be great for true summer / warm weather but I do keep them close at hand in my studio all the time. I feel like this Ann Mashburn is likely in the same category.

P.P.S. Spring shoes!

P.P.P.S. The softest kinds of love.
