We had a lot of slam dunk discoveries at Amazon this past month. I am still obsessed with these mini beauty blenders for applying difficult makeup and this little multi-purpose beauty stick ($5!), among other things, but I must write in some detail about Avene Cicalfate. I had the strangest thing happen earlier this month — the skin around my mouth/chin went super-dry, almost flake-y dry, overnight. I don’t know whether I came on to strong with my Biologique Recherche Lotion p50, or there was some strange reaction between some of the new products I’ve been testing, or maybe just change in weather? I honestly have no clue, but it was unsightly! I stopped using basically everything but this simple gel cleanser and tried first my beloved Elizabeth Arden 8 Hour Cream, which is a heavy-duty ointment/protectant that has helped with similar issues (especially dry cuticles, dry skin, etc) but nothing happened. I then layered the 8 Hour Cream beneath other heavy duty lotions, including Follain’s Ultra-Hydrating Mask, which I absolutely adore and sleep in (leave on overnight) about once a week during the winter. It’s like applying a cozy sweater/socks — hydrating but not greasy. Just right. Anyway, nothing seemed to work on this particular issue, and I remembered the Avene Cicalfate I’d bought for my son’s ultra-sensitive skin and plucked it out of his bathroom caddy. Ladies! Lo and behold, within 24 hours, my skin was returning to its former, non-reptilian state! I continued use for a few days and the entire area cleared up. It is a miracle! Cannot thank the Magpies who recommended this product enough!

Anyhow, below, the best-selling Amazon finds from this past month. (If you don’t have a carpet cleaner and do have children/pets, I can’t recommend more!)

+I’ve become a beauty blender fiend. Eyeing this set in larger/different shapes.

One other completely off-topic launch I have to mention today: Alice Walk just re-stocked their basics collection and it is SO good. I own most of these items already and want to go back for seconds/thirds because I love these pieces so much and the colors/stripes they just released are so good. Every item I’ve ever purchased from Alice Walk has the best quality and most thoughtful design — slightly longer hems to cover the rear, flattering fits, wonderful quality pima cotton. (You can read a detailed review of their tees here.) Treat yourself, ladies! This half-zip is one of my favorite possessions!

Today, a roundup of my absolute favorite finds I’ve spotted for the spring season ahead. I just ordered a bunch of items to try and will share styling notes/snapshots next week, when I’m feeling better (currently bedridden from the stomach bug I caught from my little ones). Above, you can see this banana print Alemais dress, this Alix of Bohemia dress, and the two Marea dresses I’ve been raving about in the background (this Casita and this maxi dress). I’m also super excited to finally try on these utility pants from Joe’s jeans. Will look so fresh with a blockprint blouse like this or this.

*Above: my Easter tabletop in our Manhattan apartment two years ago.

Already getting into the swing of Spring/Easter decorating, and wanted to mention a few cute finds to order now so that they arrive in time for the season/holiday. I specifically wanted to share these adorable Easter egg tokens I bought for my children — such a cute (candy-free) egg stuffer, and I know my daughter will get a big kick out of trading in for a movie night. There are a few Etsy vendors that offer similar — I also liked the design of these. I also swooned over these gorgeous hand-painted Easter eggs from my friend over at Saddle Stitches. Such treasures! I saw her style these by hanging them on branches she’d arranged. I also wanted to spotlight the table paper settings from Hester and Cook this season, which are just so beyond gorgeous — I used a set of these (different pattern) on my table last Easter and they were so fun! (Plus, children enjoyed coloring on them.)

P.P.P.S. Jarred, in a good way.

Like most children enrolled in school, mine have battled through minor ailments and bugs several times these past few weeks, and each time, I’m scattered by their unwelcome onset. My plans for writing, fitness, and social engagements go haywire, which is challenging, as I am, generally, meticulously scheduled. I draw an enormous slash through my day’s objectives and shift into caregiver mode: COVID tests must be taken; doctor’s visits scheduled; childcare coordinated (or not); remedies procured from the grocery or pharmacy. And, of course, there are warm little foreheads and whiny voices to soothe. A few weeks ago, I had to take my daughter to a follow-up check-up for an infection and I found myself, frankly, frustrated — irritated! — by its imposition on my day. My daughter was feeling well, having completed her regimen of medication a few days prior (God bless antiobiotics when you need them), and I remember careening down River Road to pluck her out of school for the appointment, in sighing haste. I stopped at a red light and caught a glimpse of myself in the rearview mirror. A crabbed, flustered face stared back.

“Jen,” I told myself. “You’re doing what you need to do. You’re being where you need to be.”

A profound calm came over me. The day suddenly appeared limber, full of forgiveness. I’d been hurtling towards and through this appointment as if it were an intrusion, an inconvenience. But what was more important than being there for my child? Of following through for her? Sometimes “where I need to be” is at a doctor’s office in the middle of the day, or curled up on the couch watching cartoons with a feverish little girl, or pinned beneath the weight of a sleeping toddler because it’s the only place he can get comfortable.

I made quiet amends with myself. The words have echoed ever since, nearly any time I find myself gritting my teeth in angst or impatience, in matters of motherhood and beyond. Sometimes I even find myself howling against the tedious process of stretching before and after my runs, or chomping at the bit while waiting for a phone call to begin. Now, I remind myself (insofar as it is true!): “Jen, you’re doing what you need to do.”

When my son fell sick with a stomach bug last weekend, I spoonfed him noodles and perched on the edge of his bed watching Paw Patrol and rolled play-doh with him for what must have been three hours (but was probably thirty minutes — ha!). The entire time, the only thing going through my head was: “You’re where you need to be.”

Grateful for this new mantra, a surprisingly potent antidote to the sensations of frustration and chaos that can befall us when life does not seem to be going our way. I think it applies whether or not you have children, too — it could be that you’re in a job that feels like “a necessary evil,” a boring or loathsome role that will eventually get you where you need to be, or that you’re just setting out on a fitness journey and hating the early days. You’re where you need to be, friend. These are the days that must happen to you.

Onward!

Shopping Break.

+J. McLaughlin has some really pretty new arrivals — love the Makenna dress in the new pink color and of course this blue Liberty floral-esque shirtdress is absolutely up my alley. Both would be perfect for work, weekend, Church, brunches, parties! So versatile.

+A Magpie recommended these sunglasses for smaller (more petite) faces. They’re currently in my cart, as I ended up returning these St. Laurents I LOVED and wanted to keep so badly but ultimately decided were too big for my face.

+A great $16 tennis tank for my racquet ladies!

+A great way to stow knives in a drawer. Honestly, we have a big block for our Shun set and I almost wish we just kept them all hidden in drawers with these instead.

+Had to have these adorable napkins for spring! Cutest floral pattern.

+Pretty tweed cardigan.

+Another great Zara score.

+These inexpensive Gap tees are a great buy for little boys. I love the simple styling, and they always come out in great colors — how good is that seafoam green?! I buy in navy and white every season, plus whatever new colors are calling my name. They have a great, thick consistency and launder well. Hold up to little boys, in other words.

+Bought this “prayer bowl” for my godson, who will be making his first communion soon! If you’re looking for a sweet Christening gift, I’ve been giving these little Bible affirmation cards. A framed prayer card would also be precious.

+Love the longer length of this knit coatigan.

+I don’t yet know what I need 20 tiny plush bunnies for but some kind of Easter goodie is materializing in my mind…

+You better believe I’m buying pink shin guards and cleats for my daughter’s soccer season!

+Sweet baby gift.

P.S. Amazon finds.

P.P.S. Zara favorites.

I wrote last month that I’d ordered these Splits59 Airweight leggings that so many people had raved about, and received a few requests for review. They are fantastic, and easily in my top three favorite pairs of leggings, alongside Lululemon Aligns and ColorfulKoalas. Detailed notes below:

Splits59 Airweight Leggings (seen above). These are more compressive than Lululemon Aligns, though they boast a similar ultra-soft, almost “brushed” handfeel. They hold you in / feel more snug and contouring than Aligns. They almost feel like wearing tights? I think these might be the most versatile leggings you can buy because they have no sheen and do not read as “athletic wear” (though that is my principle use case for them). You could easily wear these as a casual legging with a sweater/sweatshirt and not look like you’re en route to the gym. The notes on the site claim: “these super-soft Splits59 leggings are made for your workout but polished enough for whatever comes after,” and they hit the nail on the head. I love the silhouette. I would say these run TTS — I took an XS — but the fit is, as noted above, a bit more compressive than I was expecting so they feel snug (though not restrictive). I have run in these but they feel better-suited to yoga/pilates/core/mat exercise purely from a sweat standpoint. I finish my run and I am drenched. These leggings can tolerate sweat but they just feel like they’re meant for low-impact mat exercise — a slightly more polished vibe that isn’t meant for mud?

Lululemon Aligns. A favorite favorite. The most comfortable legging I own — not as compressive as Splits59, especially in the waist area, very stretchy, with an ultra-soft handfeel. Some Magpies have written to say they’ve worn these comfortably all throughout their pregnancies, though I wore primarily post-partum and beyond. I think the sizing on these is forgiving/semi-elastic, but I generally size up in Lululemon, and have pairs of these in both a 2 and a 4 that fit wonderfully (and…identically, to be honest? I can’t tell which are 2s and which are 4s). My personal preference is to go one size up from my normal size (a 0) in most Lululemon pieces, and two sizes up during postpartum. I find this brand runs pretty narrow/tight, and I’m petite to begin with–and life is definitely too short for too-tight fitness wear. Yuck. Would rather round up here. Every time I admit this, people tell me I shouldn’t be doing it, but I do run in these, and happily. I know they are not designed to be running leggings, but I’ve run in them for years and years and find them delightful jogging companions. No cinching or pinching, but they never fall down at the waist / feel like they’re falling off either. These are also my go-to leggings for when I’m home on a cold/rainy night and want to curl up in a big sweatshirt with comfortable leggings. Finally, I generally find Lululemon pieces are incredible quality. I have leggings of theirs from eight or nine years ago that still wear like new, and I will admit I don’t always launder them as recommended. (I often toss in the laundry with non-performance wear and then dry…and they’re still great. You are supposed to launder performance wear with other performance wear, and then hang dry.) A great investment.

ColorfulKoala Leggings. Honestly, these are fantastic running leggings. They are flattering, comfortable, have a good amount of stretch, and I love the price point (around $26), which makes me feel comfortable taking them out for muddy/rainy runs. Strangely, some of the colors look more like spandex/have more sheen (my black and camo pairs), and some look more matte (pastels). These claim they have a “buttery soft texture” that led me to assume they’d feel like Lululemons, but they’re not the same brushed/soft handfeel (more traditional performance legging feel)–but I don’t mind. These are straight-up great inexpensive leggings. I just checked and I bought my first two pairs in September 2020. I’m currently wearing the first pair I bought and they’re still kicking, and I wear them probably once a week or once every other week to run in. I’ve just recently noticed that some of the material at the waistband is pilling a bit, but after 2.5 years of heavy service, for $26, I feel like that’s a fair run! (And I’ll continue to wear with the pilling anyway.) You can take your true size in these.

I have to give a runner up vote to Tracksmith’s Turnover Tights. I live in these during the colder months — they are specifically designed for winter runs with a proprietary material that is insulating but bulkless, and they do deliver on that front. I find myself warm enough even in 10, 15 degree weather. However. I have found that these do not hold up fantastically. You are not supposed to launder them often (and I did not), and I carefully followed the care instructions, and still they pilled and the waistband is kind of snaggy. I also don’t love the tight waistband to begin with — it has an almost elastic waist that I’m sure is designed to keep everything in place / less frictional during longer runs — but I find it mildly uncomfortable. You have to size up in these if you have any curves. I took a S instead of an XS.

For sports bras, I have tried so many brands and always come back to my cheap C9 x Champions. I don’t need a ton of support, and these are just so comfortable. Nothing digging into your skin or shoulders. I prefer the styles and colors Lululemon has on offer, but generally find their bras are not that comfortable. Even if I size up, I’ve just never found one I loved, and I’ve tried probably four or five of theirs. (I still wear them when I want to look cute!). If I’m doing yoga/mat/cycling, I love these Beyond Yoga cropped racerback tanks. They are SO comfortable and so cute! But they aren’t right for running.

For running tops, I LOVE these $12 tanks from Target. They are super-soft, come in great colors, and I love the loose fit. When I want something more snug (e.g., layering during winter months, or to pair with looser fit shorts), I love the Swiftly Tech long sleeve and short sleeve tops from Lululemon, and for really cold days, Tracksmith’s Brighton tops, which are a merino wool blend that really keeps you warm (but is highly breathable and soft).

For running shorts, I like Lululemon’s Hotty Hot shorts in the 4″ rise. I size up (per note above) to 2 or 4. I’ve been hearing good things about these inexpensive ones from Amazon, so just ordered a pair to test. Will report back.

For socks, I like Nike’s crew socks (tall) or Feetures (low). Both are super-plush, soft, snug. The feetures are the best low-rise running socks I’ve ever used. They stay in place and offer a good amount of cushion.

I need to run with a cap to keep the sun out of my eyes — I like the Nike moisture-wicking performance ones.

For shoes, I’m still a Nike girl. I’ve been meaning to go get properly fitted at a running shop for ages and ages, but my Nikes are still doing it for me, and why mess with a good thing? I’ve dabbled in a few other brands and they’ve left me with mild injuries / I can feel the impact on my gait. So I’m sticking with what works: Nike’s Infinity Reacts. I think I’m on my fourth or fifth pair? They are ultra-lightweight and wear almost like a sock with their mesh upper, but the base offers more support than previous styles of theirs I’ve tried. I love them. And they come in such great colors, several of which are on sale at the moment.

-Tom Petty

I listened to this song (covered by Drew Holcomb) by chance last week and found myself, improbably, moved. My life is pretty far from wildflowers at the moment. Raising two children and running a business leaves little room in the margins for the kind of wanderings Petty invites. Listening to the lyrics, though, I found myself instinctively chiseling away at the things on my mind that did not matter, as though a student simplifying a fraction. And I was reminded, too —

Of how much “Wide Open Spaces” (by The Chicks) meant to me as a teen. I must have listened to it hundreds of times on my Sony Discman, laying on my stomach on the blue carpet of my childhood bedroom. “She needs wide open spaces / room to make her big mistakes / she needs new faces / she knows the high stakes”: I’d listen and I’d listen and I’d beg for life to happen to me.

My high school year book quote ran: “She wanted to be alone, where it was high and cool.” (From a Fitzgerald novel.) It was a horribly affected choice, but not untrue. I had spent most of the summers of my childhood in Colorado, and I knew exactly the sensation I was after: I wanted a livable transmogrification of the intensity and expansiveness of the blue skies in Aspen. The way you’d feel yourself drawn in, then out, in a pleasant kind of vertigo. Elizabeth Bishop captured it perfectly:

The world is a mist. And then the world is

minute and vast and clear.

I’d live to experience it.

When I was nineteen, Mr. Magpie took me driving through the sticks of Virginia. We were going tubing, and had to offroad to the launch point. I’ve written hundreds of times about that core memory, the way my bare feet looked on the dash, the cut of his profile at the wheel, branches of hornbeams and blackgums thwacking the side view mirrors. He used to rest his hand on the gear shift of his Jeep casually, absent-mindedly, and he’d intermittently reach for my fingers. When we’d jostle over a root or divot, he’d yell: “HANG on, baby!”, and the way he’d say “hang” would come out like howl. I can still see him standing on the bank of the James, holding my sandals. It felt like we were the only people on earth. Everything seemed to blur around the periphery, even the time of day and the year, and yet it was though I was seeing water up close for the first time.

I’d live to see more moments like that, most with Mr. Magpie, some entirely alone.

I remember driving home from work one warm spring night when I was maybe 22 or 23. Mr. Magpie was going to take me out to dinner that evening, and I had just “purchased” my first car. My parents had actually paid for it, used, in cash and offered me an interest-free loan to remunerate over the course of a couple of years. The sun was setting on the Potomac, and I was driving over Key Bridge with my sun roof open, and I felt as though my soul was radiating outside my body. How could one person have so many good things? I saw the seagulls, and the cherry blossoms, and the reflection of the waterfront on the water, and I felt the wind in my hair, and the sun on my face, and the sensation of unencumbrance born of the license of my own car, as though it signified my adulthood. I imagined Mr. Magpie’s imminent arrival on my doorstep. He would appear as he always did: freshly-showered, tender-eyed, expectant. I felt recklessly happy.

Those experiences of near-heedless, ecstatic open-heartedness are fewer and further between these days. This is not necessarily a demotion; I find joy more frequently, but in much smaller doses, in my current life. Happiness arrives in startling sips, in little dots along the seams of my days, rather than the enormous gulps of my younger years.

And maybe this is the way of aging? Things settle and shift and shrink in some places?

But maybe, too, it is good to endure the agita of Tom Petty reminding you that you (still) belong among wildflowers, because —

well, maybe it’s a good idea to cut bait and do less today,

to play hooky with your husband,

to go somewhere you feel free.

Maybe the wildflowers aren’t so far afield.

When in doubt, a combination of blue and white never fails to satisfy. I’ve had a fleet of pretty ones hanging within my line of sight the past few days that are just calling for warmer weather. (Seen above: seen below: Mirth’s Sonoma Dress; seen below in front Mille’s Saffron Dress.)

Notes on fit: Mirth runs a tad big for me; I take an XS but could probably take an XXS if they offered it. However (!) — all of the pieces I own of theirs are very cleverly/thoughtfully designed, with self-cinching waists, sleeves that can be pushed up or tugged down, etc. For example, the Sonoma dress above has a cinchable waist that you can tie in the back (as I’ve done above), but you could also easily leave it loose/untied while expecting or for a flowier/looser fit. The pattern on this dress is beyond perfection. It would be lovely for a spring cocktail party/wedding but also just as easy to throw on after a shower and pad around the house in. The material is really soft, brushed, airy cotton and it feels like a nightgown.

Mille (first dress seen below) runs very oversized. I take an XXS and am still swimming in their pieces. I don’t mind the oversized fit, though. I really like the cotton/materials they use — the pieces are always soft and comfortable. I write this pointedly, as I’m currently wearing a Lee Matthews blue and white striped top (that I love the look of, and that I scored on sale at Shopbop for under $100, but which retailed for $450), and it has the same look but is itchy. The Mille Saffron dress below is the kind of thing I reach for without a hesitation on days I’m writing/working from home and/or have only errands or minimal plans. I love the midi length (hits midi on me; I’m 5’0 — taller women might find it hits closer to knee), the effortless fit, the neckline, the way I can wear it with my favorite cheap Amazon seamless racerback bras…pure comfort, but I still feel pulled together and presentable.

Lately, we’ve been into using them for Jovencourt Daiquiris (seen above), which I’ve elsewhere referred to as “a cocktail for mezcal skeptics.” (<<Recipe is in that post.)

03. PROPER TABLE COASTERS. I’m a broken record, I know! But I love these cheerful, wipeable coasters. They add a welcome punch of pattern/color and catch all the drips and condensation from your favorite beverage. Bonus: they’re virtually unbreakable, so not a problem when they live somewhere little hands can reach.

04. HALF PAST SEVEN HOME TRAY. Oh my goodness, I am in love with my new scalloped tray from Half Past Seven. The gals there generously sent me this tray and I immediately realized I’d previously been using a tray way too small for our coffee table. It has a nice, oversized shape and a fun scalloped design that attracts the eye. This would be so pretty on a bar or console.

05. MILLE SAFFRON DRESS. The kind of thing I live in during the week / on casual days at home. Throw on and go, but feel a bit more polished thanks to the shirting stripe. I paired mine with my Inslee x Pamela Munson bag. I swear it goes with everything!

06. WOVEN SIDE TABLE. I mentioned last week that I’ve been dutifully focused on outfitting my writing studio. I had Mr. Magpie hang a ton of art that had just been collecting dust in our basement (shame on me!), ordered a rug, hanging rack, and enormous basket for packages, and now am eyeing some finishing touches. I think I’d like a woven side table next to the occasional chair in the corner, and am eyeing this, this or this.

07. WESTMAN ATELIER VITAL SKINCARE COMPLEXION DROPS. OK, I really disliked this product when I was first testing it. It sat in my drawer unused for weeks. I currently prefer Saie Slip Tint followed by the Merit Complexion Stick, which I use almost like a concealer/brightener wherever I need it (under eyes, under nose, blemishes, etc.). I was honestly shocked because I am a huge Westman fangirl and have loved (!) and obsessed over (!!) almost everything else they’ve ever made. But I found this difficult to apply, difficult to blend, strangely scented (sort of wet concrete-like scent?), and expensive for the amount you receive. While I was sick the other day, I went down a TikTok Beauty hole and noticed a lot of the girls were applying product using beauty blenders. It’s been awhile since I used a beauty blender — I used to love mine, but I replaced it with the Artis a few years ago and haven’t looked back — so I ordered an inexpensive (generic-brand) set and played around with Westman’s complexion drops this week and I’ll be damned if I’m not now converted? I just didn’t have the right tool to apply! This week, I’ve been applying the slip tint and then placing a little spray of dots/dabs of the Westman product directly onto my forehead and cheeks. Then I wet the beauty blender and dab away. Wow! It is amazing! Brightening, evening, with a bit more coverage than the Merit stick. Good for days when you feel you need a little extra help/coverage. Glad I revisited because it was killing me that I had a $68 foundation product just wasting away in my drawer. Will use!

08. TARGET PINK FLORAL MAXI. This dress is so good for the price — $35! I love the pattern, length, and design (tiered / slightly flared at bottom). The straps are adjustable, too (!), which surprised me. It does run big. Sadly, I am probably going to return mine because I don’t think it’s worth taking to the tailor to pay $50 to have it taken in at the bust (since it was a $35 dress), and there’s no smaller size. You can see me trying mine on above. I really love it and recommend — I think if you’re between sizes, you can size down.

09. WOOL DRYER BALLS. It’s been a minute since I raved about these little guys. They obviate the need for dryer sheets, which I love (less waste, less smell, and cheaper in the long run) and they actually work to separate sheets/towels so that they don’t end up in a twisted, damp mass. I wanted to mention two things: 1) A Magpie wrote to that she bought these and hers smelled awful, like wet dogs? Ah! The note has haunted me since I received it maybe two years ago. This has never been my case, and I’ve now purchased three sets of them. They smell like nothing right out of the package. Totally scentless. And they’ve stayed that way. I’m not sure if she bought a different brand or what happened?! But I wanted to flag. Has anyone else received stinky wool balls? You can buy essential oils to scent them if you prefer a scent, but I don’t use anything on them. 2). A Magpie also asked whether these are noisy. I do not find them noisy at all. Maybe a very soft thud now and then? But definitely not like a you have tennis balls pinging around in there!

10. LOEFFLER RANDALL LEONIE BALLET FLATS. You’re going to be seeing me in these a lot this season. They are so comfortable, easy to wear, on-trend, and they feel right with everything — jeans and dresses, dressed up or down. Love love love. This brand generally runs narrow but TTS otherwise. The strap is nice and stretchy — it doesn’t dig in at all.

11. SET OF WOVEN HEADBANDS. For $10, you get two in slightly different colors. Such an easy way to welcome spring into your wardrobe! I love to pair with my new raffia flats for a matchy moment.

12. MEG CARTER EARRINGS. Pinch me — I received the most beautiful package of spring earrings from Meg Carter the other day and I cannot wait to use them all season long! These big bloom studs are especially my style. I had a similar pair I bought from Nicola Bathie awhile ago but the front came off the stud and I glued it back together, unthinkingly forgetting to remove the earring back before hand, and therefore unwittingly gluing the earring and back together permanently. Yikes. Very excited to receive this pair to fill the void!

13. MAREA MIDI SHIRTDRESS. I can’t rave enough about this new-to-me brand. I plan on living in these dresses all season! They are exactly what I want to wear. Lightweight, coastal/beachy, feminine, easy enough to wear on a daily basis but interesting enough to put on for dinner or to entertain friends. I would say the brand runs TTS. I took an XS in both pieces and they fit great. Not as roomy as the Mille pieces, which run enormous, and maybe a tiny bit more tailored than SZ Blockprints, if you know either of those brands.

P.S. More recent home finds.

P.P.S. When was the last time you felt really happy?

P.P.P.S. Inspired by French kitchens.

My Latest Snag: Mirth Caftan.

I am absolutely ecstatic over the arrival of this gorgeous new caftan from Mirth, generously gifted. I recently gave my writing studio a little face lift and now have a hanging rack for special garments I want to be sure to photograph to share and it’s kind of become like a mood board! I’ve been arranging favorite current-season items there, and this Mirth one is front and center, just waiting for warm weather to arrive. I never get bored of blue and white.

Weekend Musings: This, Too, Shall Pass.

A couple of months ago, I wrote about “catastrophizing,” or a tendency to assume the worst possible outcome. The comments on this post were fascinating — everything from: “I don’t think I’ve ever had a single one of these thoughts? Lol. Life is a rich tapestry!” to “My therapist told me that overachievers and people who are used to being correct are prone to catastrophizing bc we think all our thoughts are true.” Wow! But one comment has really stuck with me over the past many months, and in contexts well beyond the aforementioned. Rachel wrote:

“One of the most transformative thoughts for managing my anxiety has been learning that anxious thoughts pass. This feels simple, but it is challenging to remember that in the moment. I’ve gotten much better when experiencing anxious thoughts to think to myself, “Just wait. This will pass. You will feel better really soon.” Sometimes even setting a timer helps! 30 minutes on the clock and often that anxious moment has passed.”

I cannot tell you how many times I’ve leaned on this. I even borrowed the sentiment when I was accidentally late to an event at my daughter’s school. I felt badly in the aftermath, and I consciously thought to myself: “This is not a good headspace. But this, too, will pass.”

I think the same when I’m up at night in a spiral of worry: anxious thoughts pass. I visualize them as swift-moving clouds, even straining to imagine them alongside other, friendlier-looking clouds, attempting to trivialize or at least rightsize them alongside better thoughts.

How do you make your way through a temporary rainstorm of worrisome thoughts?

Shopping Break.

+Happy jeans!

+If you missed out on my Casita dress from Marea (I know a lot of you loved this but it flew and there are only a few left in a few sizes!), this Mille has a similar vibe, and the Casita comes in a few other fully-stocked colors, too. And you can get a similar boho/blockprint vibe with this Target steal.

+While we’re talking Target: don’t miss these striped button-downs with matching shorts.

+Such a pretty Easter/springtime wreath.

+This statement platform sandal is just SO GOOD.

+Insanely expensive, but so gorgeous.

+Love these scalloped planters.

+Wicker footed urn! Such a chic statement!

+Adore this woven cardigan. (Under $50.)

+Cute scalloped storage bins. Sweet for a nursery!

+Dying over these sandals for a little.

+Chic gingham rain coat.

+Just bought my children some of these as a little spring surprise. Wind them up and put them in an envelope or box and they will fly out!

+In one section of the built-ins in our family room, we keep paper, coloring books, markers, etc. I just organized their paper using these trays and keep their markers and crayons in personalized crayon boxes like these.

I just did a big shop for micro — he’s squarely out of 3T but I’ve been stuffing him into his 3T wardrobe in the hopes of eking by until the warmer weather. Now I feel more comfortable buying him items that fit as I’m buying layers and colors that can be worn through summer/fall. I bought him nearly everything in the collage below in the past few days, but a few of my favorites seen immediately below, including our growing collection of Oso + Me shorts and pants (we have several other pairs not photographed). I really love their shorts especially. A short inseam, great colors, and they launder better than Minnow/TBBC.
