My Latest Snag: High-Waisted Trouser Shorts.

I was loving the look of these ALC shorts but wasn’t sure I wanted to spend so much on a trend I’m not sure I’ll get a lot of mileage out of, so I was thrilled to find this chic and inexpensive pair from Old Navy. I’m imagining with a black tee and strappy sandals…will style soon!

This Week’s Bestsellers.

A heads up that this popular Target tote is on sale for $21 through today. Great for schlepping all the things to the pool/sports practice/park/etc.

*This was a prime day deal but I REALLY hope that if you didn’t get it on sale, you will still give it a try in this travel size. It is SO good. I’ve been using it a lot the past few weeks and it really clarifies my hair after all my running, sweating, pool time, etc. I just feel like my hair and scalp are squeaky clean and happy! I was worried that all the scrubby bits would get stuck in my hair but it comes right out, unlike sand!

Weekend Musings: Standout Magpie Comments.

Magpies brought it this week. I enjoyed so many stirring, thought-provoking interactions in the comments, via email, and over DM this week. Two that have been at the forefront of my mind:

“When I feel nervous about a social situation, I try and remind myself to focus on making sure others have a great time, and to draw someone out who seems to feel out of place. I have told my children this many times when they haven’t wanted to attend an event they need to be at: “Just make sure _________ (a friend with a special need/ someone struggling) has a good time. That can be your purpose.”…This strategy has served me well my whole life. Just being intentional about zeroing in on a person who needs you has alleviated social anxiety for me.” — Erin

Erin wrote this in response to my post on social calisthenics, and the way I occasionally guard myself / pep myself up as I’m about to head into a social setting that I anticipate will be uncomfortable or stressful. I absolutely love this reframe, and have already been trotting it out — even in situations that aren’t particularly straining. It’s a beautiful way of re-centering my focus from myself to others, a pathway to presence in the company of a friend. Thank you, Erin. I know I will be leaning on this reframe for years to come, just as I also draw heavily from another Magpie reader’s recommendation to shift from saying “I have to do this” to “I get to do this” when facing something I don’t feel like doing (exercising, going for a doctor’s appointment, an inconvenient drop off or pick up). There is almost always a gift in there to be grateful for — a strong, healthy body; the ability to pay for good medical care; a car and safe place for my children to be during the day; etc.

The other comment that has been on my heart came via DM from a lovely woman I am lucky enough to consider a friend in my personal life. She responded to the same post Erin did by saying:

“This is very true for me, too. I’ve spent a little time investigating where my standard hyper-vigilance setting around socializing comes from, and it can stem from a parent or sibling around which we felt we needed to be on our toes, even if just for emotional safety. Open invitation to set your tools down around me! In my opinion, real friendship should have inherent grace as we all learn to become more our truer selves more of the time, and learn to relax more comfortably into it.”

I mean — wow. First, I am grateful to have this open-hearted woman in my life (can we all take a minute to acknowledge how wonderful it is to have someone say: “open invitation to set your tools down around me!”), and second, the gentle wisdom here bowled me over. I had not thought, for example, about how previous relationships and situations may have shaped my instinct to put on a mask or tiptoe when in the company of others. I can now see the way they have conditioned me, an awareness that I find wildly helpful.

Thank you for a deeply thought-provoking week, Magpies — as I said to yet another Magpie this week (you can see my full response here), “I feel as though any time I am straining through something, in the throes of cognitive dissonance, with a sensation of guilt or dread whose provenance is not immediately clear, I know I’m doing important self-work. I’m asking hard questions that will eventually lead to clarity. Which is to say, to myself if not the lovely Magpie I was chatting with – keep going. Keep digging. Worth it to know your own heart. Be an expert in yourself.”

Onward!

+Fun colorful sundress.

+This dress, with strappy sandals, is a yes.

+Love the unexpectedness of this nude-colored embroidered top with matching shorts. Entire look under $100!

+While in Baltimore, both of my girlfriends swore up and down about the necessity of a good makeup setting spray — which I’ve never used! I’m hearing good things about Tilbury’s formula. Does any have a rec or review?

+I love S&L’s rug selection, and many are on sale right now. We have this in our family room right now and I have this in my studio, and this gingham has been a Magpie reader fav for awhile! Love it as a kitchen runner or in a nursery.

+Into the Khaite-like sensibility of this sleeveless knit. So good!

+These are great utensils for sending in with your children’s lunches. The forks actually spear things (unlike many other brands, where they are dull to the point of useless / should just be a spoon). Love the colors, too!

+My friend Stephanie has looked SO chic wearing this Loewe bag around Europe! I have so enjoyed living vicariously through her spectacular travels this summer.

+Everlane has some great new arrivals, including this caftan and this structured pencil skirt.

+Kicking myself for missing out on this gorgeous summer wedding guest dress while still available in my size.

+This romantic blouse is giving Doen.

+Cute retro-style running shorts for your little love at a great price.

Lately, I’ve been undergoing a kind of style evolution, gravitating towards blacks and whites and architectural shapes that feel sophisticated, metropolitan. Today, sharing a mood board representing all of the top items on my mind for achieving this look. I am seriously eyeing so many of these items, but think I NEED to have these Old Navy linen shorts!

Are you familiar with Rachel Ringenberg? She runs a quiet, insightful blog with musings on homeschooling and rural life, and something about the simultaneous generosity and specificity of her observations moves me. She will write about summer with haiku-like crispness, the shapes and sounds of the season distilled to stick figure shapes that somehow telegraph its feel with near-visceral clarity, and casually mention the kindnesses she bestows on her neighbors as if such warmth is unremarkable. Her way of life is different from mine — her thoughts on homeschooling and harvesting maple syrup from her farm having little bearing on my own ministrations — but her voice resonates, richly. You might do yourself a favor and sign up for her. I find her writing among my favorite on the Internet.

In her most recent post, she mentions a homeschooling book by Sarah Mackenzie called Teaching from Rest. Ringenberg writes: “Her book is a short but concise view of the mental challenge of teaching from rest and from a space of low-anxiety.” Reading those words was like falling into a familiar hammock I hadn’t realized I was feeling for. It suddenly seemed obvious that my ethos, my experience in so many realms of life could be characterized by “the mental challenge of parenting/running a home/living a life/navigating relationships/running a business/writing/creating from rest and a space of low-anxiety.” It is, truly, a struggle, as the pace and complexity of life seems determined to strip me of rest.

I wrote earlier this summer about eschewing the ersatz glamor of “busyness.” I don’t want to be busy! I want to sit still, and absorb my children, and take in the cardinal-dotted arbor vitae in my suburban backyard. I want to read. I want to play games while condensation drips down the side of my water glass and the fan clicks overhead. I want to unfurl into the day. I don’t want to live life just having visited, a flurry of appointments and checkmarks — I want to sit squarely in its center. I want to take up space, a tree rooted and branching.

Yet these naturalist sentiments are in constant contest with the administrations of life that, for reasons benign and not, feel necessary even as they consume my free time: the children’s programs and their attendant forms and gear, the desire to feed my children diversely and healthfully, which often introduces additional mental load in the conceptualization of the week’s menus, trips to the grocery, accommodation of their ever-changing palates, the intent to volunteer in my children’s school that simultaneously nips at my productivity in other realms, the aspiration to stay in good touch with old friends, which can occasionally feel like chasing tails. Even my erstwhile commitment to exercise seems occasionally antithetical to my desire for rest, for pauses that aren’t filled or “productive.”

This past year, Mr. Magpie and I have been more aware of good sleep hygiene, and have been startled by how much easier life feels after a good night of sleep. We find ourselves more patient with our children. We have more energy for creativity. It is so obvious and yet for my entire life, I have thought sleep was the margin I could cut into, no harm, no foul. Didn’t have time to make the cupcakes during the day? I’ll stay up until midnight getting it done. Couldn’t finish my essay because I was chasing twenty different admin items? I’ll sit down after the children are in bed and wrap it up. But I think I am in a place where I need to start protecting those evening hours, valuing them as much I do the good food I eat, the stirring books I read, the stimulating friendships I nurture. Because rest is just as important.

Sleep is an obvious starting point for those of us after a more rested, low-anxiety lifestyle. But today I am auditing my daily routines to ask how I might further shape them to invite more rest and low-anxiety. I can tell you that sitting down to a proper lunch — not spooning it into my mouth absently over my keyboard at my desk — has been a small but meaningful change to my daily life that has introduced a sense of relaxation, or pace, into the middle of my day. I also think our family’s “one thing a day” rule (other Magpies have similar mnemonics, like ‘do the small thing’) is helpful for maintaining a sense of ease and low-stress on the weekends. Of course, these are not always and invariably achievable — life does get in the way — but they are useful guardrails.

What other ways do you introduce rest into your life?

+”Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself.” Love these words so much.

+We publish the good news.

+On how Invisalign helped me make space for better things.

Shopping Break.

+In the above photo, I’m wearing this ultra-comfortable midi length nightdress from Lake Pajamas’ new collection.

+Lululemon just released some great new lounge shorts. Love the slightly higher hem at the outer thigh.

+RMS just sent me their new SuperNatural radiance SPF serum, and I am legit legit obsessed with it. I apply it after my skincare routine and it kind of acts like spackle/primer for makeup, but can also be worn on its own on the days I’m going to exercise. It provides good sun protection — you can almost feel the barrier! — and a lot of glow. I’m in love love love. It’s 20% off at BlueMercury with code SUNSHINE.

+I’ve been doing penance for forgetting my Chanel sunglasses in a Target dressing room for the past ten years or so. (Still makes my stomach turn.) However. I think I need this Loewe shades in tortoise or pink. What do you think?

+Speaking of shades, this new style from Le Specs has a very Loewe/Celine vibe.

+These raffia dad sandals are under $100 and SO GOOD.

+Not sure if the price is a mistake (?) but this Sarah Bray hat is listed as $100.

+Been on a major gingham kick lately. Love these shorts and this mini.

+Sunhouse Children is running a warehouse sale. Love this suit for girls, and these trunks are among my favorites my son owns, and currently only $13!

+This caftan is giving Pippa Holt vibes (ahem) for a fraction of the price.

+Looks designer, is $139.

+Target is offering 50% off pool toys this week, including three of my children’s favorite summer items: these divers, this rainbow sprinkler arch, and these light-up wigglers.

+CHIC scalloped bath mat.

+Obsessed with these pants.

+I can’t stop thinking about this sweater polo from VB. I am just LOVING everything she’s putting out.

+Fab swimsuit.

+Fun Marni crossbody.

In the melee of Prime Day*, you may not have seen that J. Crew is basically giving away clothes for free by offering an extra 70% off sale prices with code 48HOURS, through tonight. This is when I stock up on lots of basics — I ordered a few of these tees ($5 with code) and these ribbed tanks ($7 with code), and this ribbed striped tee ($8 with code), as I can never have enough of them.

Major steal: have you tried their plunge one-piece?! It’s my “go-to-when-I’m-not-feeling-a-million-bucks” suit. It is SO comfortable and flattering, and the website describes it perfectly as “the goldilocks of coverage — not too much and not too little.” For me, that means a low vee but full rear coverage, which this suit nails. Perfect basic to have on hand when you’re not feeling like a Hunza G moment. It’s currently under $30 in several great colors.

Also worth a gander —

THESE PLEATED DENIM SHORTS ($21?!?!)

THIS BOW-SHOULDER ONE-PIECE (ALSO $21?!?)

CUTE FITNESS DRESS ($15)

Lots of shoes included. If you run, you might luck out and score one of the final pairs of these fab slides for $24 or these Mansur-Gavriel-esque woven flats. (Comparison.)

*I also did want to mention that my three favorite Prime Day purchases have been this RMS Beauty mascara (somehow almost 60% off), this portable charger (so slick-looking!), and these children’s goggles. I had seen a lot of those goggles at the pool this summer, and some of the moms were saying that the double elastic straps are much easier to get on/off (and don’t snag in hair as much) than the standard thick rubber one. Several Magpies wrote in to endorse them, too. One said her daughter HATES anything around her face/head but tolerates these easily — they are comfortable for kids.

Last but not least, my favorite sunglasses — the ones I own in three colors — are on sale for $50. Get the caramel! You’ll be surprised how much you reach for them, and they add just a little OOMPH to any outfit. The shape is fantastic. All my Prime Day finds here.

P.S. You all also loved the Doen sale yesterday. I bought this, and a ton of you bought the striped dress I also ordered last week (under $70!)

P.P.S. You’re where you need to be.

P.P.P.S. Great travel gear for families.

*Image via Veronica Beard and I want to immediately recreate this entire look immediately, from the ivory shades to the white tee-paired-with-ecru-denim and suede flats.

***Prime deals keep coming! I am updating my shop regularly as I find new great buys.

Q: Summer date night outfits.

A: I’m loving crochet — this feels like a trend most men will appreciate (versus puffy sleeves, which baffled all of them) — as it has an effortless, barefoot vibe but is also sexy and fashionable. This Zara dress with some flat strappy sandals would be perfect, or a crochet tank like this with chic black jeans. Also love a breezy white dress like this Doen or this ASTR. Effortless, sweet, romantic. For something a bit saucier, love this two-piece set, especially in black.

Q: Wedding guest dresses please! I love the Bernadette you shared!

A: A few wedding guest dresses I’ve seen and loved recently:

THIS EDDY DRESS

THIS POLKA DOT

THIS CARA CARA

THIS J. CREW

THIS STRIPED REFORMATION

THIS MONIQUE LHUILLIER

THIS A.L.C.

THIS LOEFFLER RANDALL

THIS DRAMATIC STAUD

MY FANM MON (SEE ME IN IT HERE)

Q: First week of preschool – for bebe and mama.

A: Aw! The first thing you need — a lot of grace. This transition really snuck up on me when it came to be my son’s turn and I felt twenty ways about it. For outfits, I’m not seeing a lot of BTS pieces from my favorite children’s retailers yet, but I would keep an eye out for TBBC, Little English, and Cecil and Lou if you want something traditional. Something like this or this would be cute! TBBC usually does really sweet but not too-pigeonholed-to-first-day-of-school (e.g., you can have her wear them again) plaid dresses/jumpers and I put mini in those most years (prior to uniform). I also can’t recommend this “first day / last day” flag enough. I have the cutest pictures of my children with them and I love that you only need ONE flag (vs. one flag a year). For backpacks, I would consider State, Apple of My Isla, TRVL, or Paravel. And these tags and stickers from Erin Wallace are the best!

Q: What to wear to nice dinners/BBQs at friends’ houses.

A: I would reach for a sundress like this, this, this, or this.

Q: A 5 PM city summer (80 degree) wedding reception dress.

A: Fun! I think a lot of the dresses from the wedding guest dress roundup above would work, but would specifically consider this Reformation or this Self-Portrait, as they both have a more urban/modern sensibility. I also like the idea of something on the dramatic/fashion-forward for the setting — like this or this.

Q: My twin boys’ first birthday party. F1/race car theme.

A: Meri Meri always does the cutest takes on themes. Love their race car line of party products, and how cute are these for favor bags?

Q: Pool towels for new house!

A: Congrats on the new home! I love these ones from Amazon. We use them all summer long and they come in great classic stripe colors.

Q: Good shampoo and conditioner!

A: My longtime favorite luxury set is Oribe (they have tons of lines that cater to specific needs, but their Signature is a good starting point), and I have yet to meet someone who doesn’t love this line. The products really work as marketed, lather beautifully, and smell wonderful. My salon uses their products and stands by their quality. But lately I have been using Amika’s purple shampoo for blonde hair (I had been feeling like my hair was looking a little brassy) with Davines Oi conditioner, which is absolute heaven. I am absolutely obsessed with the scent and it leaves hair so detangled. I will often alternate between these higher end brands and my tried-and-true Pantene, which I think is excellent. I recently tried Goop’s new shampoo and conditioner and was REALLY impressed for the first few washes but it ended up really weighing my hair down — it has protein in it that was too heavy for my ultra-fine hair. Which brings me to my last point: this Christophe Robin scalp scrub (at time of writing, a Prime Day deal), which is ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE. If you have any build-up or need to just get your hair squeaky clean after a summer of beach, sun, etc, this stuff is bananas.

P.S. More shower favorites here.

Q: Boys’ twin bedding for shared room. Ages 3 and 4.

A: I like the patterns and quality of The Company Store’s kids sheeting. We use it in my daughter’s room and on the bunk beds in one of the guest rooms in our home. Specifically love this star pattern (we use in the blush in my daughter’s room), or this one (which we use on the bunks). I like to mix and match patterns, so might do a star sheet with a striped comforter or vice versa. Also love this blue toile and this cabana stripe from S&L.

Q: Maxi skirt for the summer that is casual and gives tailored/chic vibes, not boho.

A: Try Hill House’s Delphine skirt — I own and love it and usually pair it with a white tee or a striped button-down for a little pattern play (see here). Also love the look of this or this!

It’s a big shopping week, Magpies — in addition to Prime Day (just updated my picks here) and early access to the NSale for certain tiers of cardholders (my top finds here), Doen just launched an epic warehouse sale and the striped mini dress I just ordered last week is included and heavily discounted! Currently under $70. If I’d only waited a week…sigh! This dress is giving me major lakehouse vibes. Imagine with Birks and a ballcap while sitting in an Adirondack chair on the deck. Love.

I did manage to snag this floaty dress from the sale just now — the price is crazy relative to quality!

Note that I almost always size down a full size in this brand. Runs very roomy.

P.P.P.S. Some of my absolute favorite buys this summer.

I was bowled over by the reactions to my post last week on the delta between me when I’m alone and me when I’m with company. I received several heartfelt emails and direct messages that made me realize how common it is to feel this way, especially if you believe yourself to be a particularly empathetic or emotionally-aware person. Since writing, I’ve been wondering whether bringing your public self and your private one into perfect parity with one another is a realistic or even desirable objective. Perhaps the dissonance, while briefly uncomfortable, introduces a good kind of friction in the sense that it invites deeper self-knowledge? As in: “I know this isn’t my full self, because my full self is [fill in the blank — funnier, snarkier, gentler, etc].” On the other hand, perhaps finding balance is a worthy goal, as it suggests deeper comfort and communion with your true self. (“To thine own self be true,” etc!) Or maybe it’s about finding the people you can be your whole self in front of? A lot of angles.

Anyhow, in that essay, I wrote: “Maybe you are like me and in need of a kind of social calisthenic to find grace in my self-expression when I am with others.” The concept of an inner calisthenic — be it an exercise, mnemonic, private rule, ritual — has been on my mind since. Do you have practices like this? I’m thinking specifically of the way I will sit in my car for a minute after reaching my destination in order to gather myself if I am feeling slightly anxious about the impending social interaction. I usually launch into a quiet pep talk (“remember that you are an interesting person! you are fun!”), or centering myself around a social goal (“just put out good, friendly vibes”). I’m curious if you have similar emotional or social calisthenics that you find helpful in navigating your day, maintaining a positive mood, or maneuvering through social interactions.

Amazon Prime Day launches today! I will be updating my Amazon Storefront throughout the day as I find new items, but I am sharing all the best deals I’m already aware of here.

Already waiting in my cart for purchase: Mustela children’s cleansing gel, which I’ve used and loved since my children were infants, Affresh laundry machine cleaning tablets (I use these once a month and they REALLY work at keeping the tub clean and odor-free), and this R+Co Pomade stick, which is apparently the secret to achieving a slicked-back bun according to sleek bun queen, Mary Glenn.

I also wanted to flag this ruffle plunge swimsuit, which gets strong reviews and reminds me a lot of my new Summersalt swimsuit. Good way to get the look for less and comes in several cute colors and patterns! And! If you have young children and/or a dog, you can’t live without this Bissell rug/fabric cleaner. It’s saved us! Finally, these are the best inexpensive sleeping pillows — we use them in our guest rooms and children’s rooms!

P.P.P.S. Taking your own joy seriously.

A few months ago, a Magpie reader wrote to tell me that her six-year-old son had passed away unexpectedly, and that, after his death, she had discovered hundreds of photos he had taken on his iPad, many of (in her words) “everyday things he found beautiful — light/shadow, flowers, a bumblebee, our dog.” She went on to write: “Looking closely is what our children do best. It doesn’t require patience or practice for them; they innately know how to do it. To see things through their wondrous eyes and love things with their entire hearts.”

I have been holding this mother, and the memory of her son, in my heart for weeks now. I think of her boy often when I catch my daughter taking selfies on my phone, or with her plastic-y Tonka truck style camera, its viewfinder the size of a thumbnail, or when I rifle through the mountain of drawings my children routinely leave on our countertops and shove beneath our bedroom door in the morning. Their dawn contributions map out a constellation of insular references: the pool where they spend their days, the Lisa-Frank-style cheetahs drafted from a new coloring book, a stick figure with a pink dress on “because pink is your favorite color.” I think of her boy, too, when my four-year-old son is desperately trying to communicate a string of details that have no discernible interconnectedness, as he did yesterday, when he was telling me about feathers, and trees, and “those yellow ones?” I still can’t quite make out the object from his verbal penumbra, but I listen to him and I strain to honor the narrow web that makes up his tiny world without dismissal.

It can be, let me be honest, a challenge to maintain adequate wonder as a parent. I remain continuously at war with the everyday monotony of child-rearing, the way it can obscure or dullen the sweetness and magic of early childhood. Because bedtime, for me, often shape-shifts into a hurdle. Bathtime can feel like an aching back. Dinnertime can sound like a repeating volley of “bottom in your seat” and “try at least one bite” and “if you’re not hungry enough for dinner, you’re not hungry enough for dessert.” I know I do not need to apologize or qualify these truths to this community. I know I can look honestly at my experience of motherhood in your company.

And yet. I also know that there are mothers reading this who miss the bathtimes, the marinara-stained cheeks, the “Mama!” cried out in the middle of the night. And so I want to sit for a minute in the discomfort of knowing that all of the parts of motherhood — even the deeply fatiguing ones we must muscle through with grit — are a privilege.

I am writing this for you, A., because you have been to hell and back, and I see you in your grief. I remember your son, the legacy of his photos, when I am running on empty as a mother. Sending love, and always —

Onward we go.

+Every phase is a good phase.

+Onward.

+If you’re looking for shopping, I shared a roundup of the top links and looks on my mind last night.

+Adidas Sambas and Gazelles have been a thing for a year or two now but I am suddenly, intensely, wanting a pair in court green. These are in my cart. Will I wear them?! I’m so inspired by the street style starlets of Europe — why not!? Like, how cute is Josefien in hers below?

+…Or should I continue to hold out for a pair of Loewe Flows? Mr. Magpie’s birthday gift to me is a trip to Italy next year, and I’m already imagining I’ll need lots of Euro street style pieces that are also comfortable/walkable. I keep hearing the best things about the Loewe Flows from a comfort standpoint, and they are just so chic.

+Another slow-burn item I’ve been eyeing from the sidelines for several seasons: Longchamp mesh bags. A Magpie wrote advising I avoid them because she found hers highly impractical, but they look so incredibly chic…! I was newly reminded of this when I subscribed to Megan Strachan’s Substack. She wore hers in black and ecru all over Paris and damn did she look chic while doing it!

+Then I went back and forth on the size she’s wearing versus the new mini size. I have been really wanting an itty-bitty crossbody bag to hold just my phone and card case and car key lately. There have been many instances where I’m just running out for coffee, to the grocery, to return something, to a neighbor’s, and don’t want the fuss of a whole bag. Strange how bag size correlates with phases of motherhood, isn’t it? After six years of schlepping all the things — water bottles, snacks, bandaids, toys, spare underwear — I am newly liberated by the thought of carrying as little as possible. Ha! Anyway, my dream itty bitty bag would be one of these tiny Bottegas, but that’s too much of a splurge for such a frivolous whim. I hunted around for photos of the tiny mesh crossbody styled and found some on TikTok styled by Gen-Z-ers and was, frankly, sold. Gritty screen grabs below.

+I should mention that Megan, mentioned above, is founder of the hot jewelry brand Dorsey, known for its lab-grown gemstones. I first learned about this brand from fashion queen Becky Malinsky, who seems always to have her finger to the pulse. Her style is, to me, a total marvel — so different from my own (hers is sort of androgynous-minimalist-low-key-chic), and I find her intriguing precisely because she approaches clothing in ways I would never imagine. She’s made me want to play around with different silhouettes, try new brands, and…wear a Dorsey necklace. I was overjoyed when Dorsey sent me one of their bestselling Kate Riviere necklaces, and Becky is inspiring me to style it in ways that I wouldn’t intuitively. I have been wearing mine with cocktail dresses — especially strapless ones that really showcase the jewels! — but she wears hers with tank tops and other layered necklaces, and I want to try it out. I mean, it’s really kind of insane to wear a necklace that looks like inherited diamonds (which would retail for tens of thousands of dollars) but cost under $400. Wowza. Fellow fashion queen Courtney Grow also styles up and down in really interesting ways you can see here. A little collage of Dorsey below. +Nicole Cassidy is making a strong case for the denim maxi/midi skirt. Selon elle, Slvrlake is the “it” version, but you can get the look for less with this or this one (selling fast) from Gap.

+Excuse me but J. Crew has some amazing markdowns that are on sale, plus an extra 50-60% off (as of time of writing this). In my cart: this eyelet popover, this striped ribbed tank (not on sale but so good), and this olive green tee, which I already ordered for like $8.

+These high-rise white jean shorts are a good way to get the Agolde look for less. A lot less. At time of writing, they are only $30!

+Another great (!) sale is running at Bergdorf’s, with serious designer pieces on sale plus an extra 30% off. Don’t sleep on these L’Agence coated denim pants (under $100!) for fall. Yes, they have a skinny leg, to which some of us boast new-found allergies, but they will look fabulous tucked into a tall/mid-shaft boot or with classic ballets. And maybe tuck these splashy Emporio Sireneuse shorts into your suitcase for your next summer trip! So good with just a white tee or tank.

+The Outnet has some killer pieces available at the moment. Love (!) this white eyelet maxi skirt, this Sachin and Babi dress, this Zimmermann, and these The Row sandals.

+On the last point — the sandals from The Row — I have eyed those for multiple seasons. I don’t know what it is about sandals this week (as you know, I also ordered the Ancient Greek Eleftherias a few days ago), but I suddenly felt very much in need of a new “dressy” sandal. I have worn my Hermes Orans (you can score pre-loved at The Real Real or get the look for less with these) for at least six summers (?) — I definitely bought them when I lived in Chicago! — and need a new pair or a change-up, as they were looking a little ragged. I looked all over for something interesting and neutral and landed on the Elftherias, but I also did consider these from Margaux after spotting them on the ever chic Caroline Gilroy, seen below. After ordering the Eleftherias in nude, I realized I also wanted a pair of black strappy sandals to pair with white dresses and white jeans (and also, perhaps, my new Harlow trousers?). The white and black just feel so fresh together. I first contemplated the Row ones, but they were sold out in my size. Zara has a GREAT lookalike pair but only available in a brown leather and I was really after black. I turned to The Real Real and found a single pair in my size of Alexandre Birman flat espadrille sandals with black leather straps for $100 and ordered on the spot. I am SO excited. But jut a reminder to always patrol TRR if you’re looking for something specific. You never know what awaits!

Have a great week, friends!
