Sephora’s spring savings event launches today! This is a tiered promotion where VIB Rouge members get 20% off starting today; VIB members get 15% off starting April 5th; and insiders get 10% off starting April 7th. Always a favorite time to stock up and try some new beauty.

My Current Favorite Beauty Products.

Below, my favorite beauty products at the moment — these are the items I use in my daily (certain products closer to weekly) makeup routine at the moment.

SUPERGOOP GLOWSCREEN — This is marketed as an SPF product but I wear it as a stand-in for tinted moisturizer and just let my natural skin shine through. It affords a tiny, tiny bit of coverage/evening-out, but mainly just adds glow (and SPF). It wears so beautifully.

LAURA MERCIER EYE BASICS — I love this eye primer and use it most often as a stand-in for eye shadow. It just evens out the lid and makes for a nice neutral, even-toned skin tone across the face. I think of it sort of like concealer for the lids.

ILIA MULTI-USE PIGMENT — I am obsessed with the “Temptation” color and have been using daily on my cheeks and lips. Just the prettiest peach color for spring.

LAURA MERCIER CANVAS PRIMER — I use this if I’m going to apply Westman Atelier foundation stick. If not, I just use SuperGoop and concealer. But the primer I find acts like an additional layer of hydration and illumination as well as an adhesive that just makes Westman Atelier all the more impressive in its results. My mom describes this as “spackle” — ha! It really helps smooth on and adhere foundation and concealer.

GUERLAIN BRONZER — This is hands down the best bronzer on the planet. Super natural looking, blends beautifully, and it smells like heaven. A palette also lasts a long, long time.

HOURGLASS AMBIENT LIGHTING POWDER — A truly beautiful, luminating powder I sometimes dust over my face after applying concealer/foundation.

WESTMAN ATELIER FOUNDATION STICK — I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve mentioned this wunderproduct. Simply the best in its class. Glides on, blends in, looks like skin. BIG caveat: you must moisturize your skin very thoroughly if you want to maximize results. I love this gorgeous day cream from Clarins as a first step.

WESTMAN ATELIER HIGHLIGHTER STICK — Still my favorite highlighter. Glides on and affords colorless sheen. I like to put this under my brows, on cheeks, on the tip of my nose, and clara’s bow.

HOURGLASS EYEBROW GEL — I’ve turned several friends evangelical about this product. It is so easy to use – swipe on and it fills, evens out, and shapes brows beautifully. I went back and forth for years over whether eyebrow gel was necessary. It felt like an extra step. I think gelled eyebrows complete a look and frame the face wonderfully.

In case you’re wondering about some major omissions, I am currently using and loving Thrive mascara, concealer from Cle de Peau and/or Kevyn Aucoin (depending on severity of breakout / undereye situation), and eyeliner from Nyx (absolutely indistinguishable from Stila, and just so easy to use), none of which are carried by Sephora.

My Current Favorite Skincare + Haircare Products.

skincare and haircare sephora

TATA HARPER REGENERATING CLEANSER — Been using this for years and will simply never quit it. I love the way it exfoliates my skin and keeps breakouts at bay. It just scrubs the day right off, and it smells lovely to boot.

SUMMER FRIDAYS JET LAG MASK — I’m late to the game on this one but absolutely adore this product. I often sleep in it when I feel like my skin is dry/tight/in need of TLC, and I sometimes apply it as a spot hydrator if I have a patch of dry skin (post-breakout, etc). I battled a nasty cold last week and I could barely get out of bed for two days. I had two products on my bedside table: this, which I kept slathering all over my face — I just felt so dehydrated! — and Elizabeth Arden 8 Hour Cream, which I slathered on lips and nose (burned from all the tissues!). I almost find Summer Fridays comforting, like pulling on warm socks in bed. I’m obsessed.

CLARINS EXTRA-FIRMING MOISTURIZER — A slow burn favorite. I received this as a gift from Clarins and started using it and then could not stop. It has a lovely, mid-weight texture — glides on like gel but really hydrates without leaving skin greasy. I love the way it illuminates my skin. That’s my goal with every layer of skincare: how much glow can I afford myself with each layer? Personally, I think the combo of a vitamin C product, Clarins serum, and this moisturizer is the ELITE trio for achieving a great base glow.

CLARINS DOUBLE SERUM — Will never stop singing its praises. This is one of those products I cannot go a day without. If I am ever short on time, I will trim vitamin C and moisturizer, but I will not go without this serum. It is hydrating, smoothing, plumping, invigorating, glossing, youth-affording. I don’t know, it just makes your skin look 100% better.

BIOSSANCE VITAMIN C OIL — I’ve tried a lot of vitamin C products and personally believe Vitamin C is THE mover and shaker in the category of skin-brightening skincare. Biossance’s is my favorite Vitamin C formula. It is a dry oil and very easy to apply — I apply with the dropper directly onto my face so as not to waste a drop (a little dot on my forehead and each of my cheeks, then blend with palms).

FRESH HESPERIDES BODY LOTION — I think I’ve been using this body lotion for going on ten years now? It smells like heaven and hydrates skin wonderfully. It’s sort of a part of my signature scent at this point!

FRESH SOAP — I love to buy these to keep in the guest shower/bathroom, and to give as little gifts! They come in the prettiest paper and smell gorgeous.

DPHUE APPLE CIDER VINEGAR LEAVE-IN THERAPY — I ended up so-so on the actual apple cider vinegar rinse (could be user error but I felt it made my hair feel really weird and oily much more quickly than usual) but THIS THERAPY IS THE BEST. I spritz it on post-shower when I am letting my hair air-dry and it detangles my hair like a dream and then primes/protects from heat tools and somehow it yields the softest, most shiny hair I’ve ever enjoyed in my life at the end. I swear my hair looks like Vermeer painted it afterward! Truly an outrageously good product. I have had a few readers ask about the scent — it DOES smell a bit vinegar-y when spritzed, but the scent quickly evaporates. I do not smell it once I’ve styled my hair at all. Still, if you are sensitive to vinegar scents, this might not be for you.

CAUDALIE BEAUTY ELIXIR MIST — I rediscovered this facial mist after a hiatus and love it. Is it essential? No. I would rank it the lowest on this entire list of beauty and skincare products. But does it feel great? And does it set makeup beautifully? And does it serve as a stand-in for the demarcation between my work day and evening? Yes, yes, and yes.

ORIBE SHAMPOO — My favorite splurge shampoo. IMO, the only prestige shampoo worth the price. (Otherwise, I stick with Pantene Pro V.)

OUAI TEXTURIZING HAIRSPRAY — Every now and then, I do style my hair in loose waves, and this is the golden ticket for cool girl, lived-in hair. I curl large sections with a 1/2″ Hot Tools curler, alternating the direction of the curl with each section, and never touching the ends. Then I spray all over with this, flip my head upside down, and run my fingers lightly through my hair to break things up. 10/10 would recommend.

What’s In My Shopping Cart.

A few new-to-me items I want to try —

WESTMAN ATELIER CREAM HIGHLIGHTER — I’M CRAZY ABOUT ALL OF THIS BRAND’S PRODUCTS SO WHY NOT ROUND IT OUT WITH A NEW HIGHLIGHTER?!

LAURA MERCIER TRANSLUCENT LIGHTING POWDER — TINX DESCRIBED THIS AS THE G.O.A.T…AND SINCE I’M RUNNING LOW ON MY HOURGLASS PALETTE, I THINK I’LL GIVE THIS A WHIRL NEXT

TOWER LIP AND CHEEK BALM — I LOVE LIP/CHEEK COLORS THAT CAN BE APPLIED WITH FINGERS (SEE ILIA PIGMENT REFERENCED ABOVE!)…THIS ONE EARNED ALLURE’S BEST OF BEAUTY AWARD SO I’M OFFICIALLY INTRIGUED SINCE I TEND TO LIKE MOST OF THEIR PICKS

P.S. What beauty tips have stuck with you?

P.P.S. What items do you splurge versus save on?

P.P.P.S. Household must-haves.

OK, I am totally in love with two cover-up brands this season: Mikoh and 9Seed. I am having serious buyer’s indecision with regards to which styles to purchase but I want them all. The top contenders —

MIKOH MIRAKAMI DRESS IN CRYSTAL BLUE (SEEN ABOVE IN TAUPE, CAN ALSO BE WORN ON SHOULDERS)

9SEED CAFTAN IN WHITE — PROBABLY THE MOST VERSATILE

9SEED ANTIBES DRESS — I LOVE THOSE FLUTTER SLEEVES

9SEED TUNIC TOP

MIKOH JUMPSUIT

9SEED OVERALLS

You can get this gauze coverup look for less with this under-$30 steal, which comes in several great colors, or this Michael Stars score, which is somehow marked down to under $40, plus an extra 25% off with code EXTRA25! I think I need it in the white or navy…

I am, if you can’t tell, into the gauzey texture these brands boast, and I have had this J. Crew top in a similar fabric in my cart for awhile, imagining I’d pair with simple denim or jean shorts. J. Crew makes a button-down style in the same fabric, too, if that’s more your vibe, and Gap has a really cute collarless variation (love the hot pink). Upgrade pick: this style from Xirena.

Shop all these picks and a handful of other brands here —

I am loving the idea of these breezy styles paired with sleek, strappy The Row-inspired footwear. The balance feels just right, and modern, and sophisticated to me. The Row had a pair of sandals called “The Bare Sandals” a season or two ago (still available in a fun yellow color here) that I so wish I’d snagged! But, luckily, there are tons of similar styles for less out now. A few favorite pairs along these lines:

P.S. If it’s swimwear you’re after, I shared some of my favorite suits here and updated this list when answering the final question in this week’s shopping query post!

P.P.S. Chic home finds for under $100.

P.P.P.S. Do you remember when we used to take our time?

Another draft chapter from a fictional work of mine. You can read earlier segments of the book here, here, here, here.

Powell was the centrifuge in my spiraling life, even long after we’d gone our separate ways. I’d registered this with a churning stomach at a Virginia football tailgate nearly four years after we’d split up: he was the steadfast center, and I was continuously measuring the radius between him and the new boys I dated and the new versions of myself I wore and the experience of eating brook trout not fried, and therefore not how Powell liked it, for the first time. I was at the tailgate with my boyfriend at the time, Javier, a well-dressed Spaniard who stood to inherit a fortune from his shipping magnate father, and had no qualms about his disinterest in pursuing a trade or livelihood of his own. I dated him almost by accident, shruggingly. I was living on R Street in Georgetown at the time and working as an assistant to the gentleman who ran his father’s philanthropic office. I crossed paths with him two or three times in those strange professional-but-personal interactions of the ultra-wealthy, where, for example, I boarded his father’s mega-yacht while it was harbored at the Georgetown Waterfront in order to deliver some papers for signature and ran into Javier lounging on the deck, scrolling on his phone. Similar happenstance meetings seemed to proliferate over the following weeks, and then suddenly he was inviting me to events and, without any conversation, calling me his girlfriend, a naming that hung ill at ease with our lack of intimacy and compatibility. He drove us in a red sports car from D.C. to Charlottesville, clocking two speeding tickets on 29, and wore forest green suede driving moccasins, khaki chino shorts cut about six inches above the knee, and a pristine white polo shirt with an enormous embroidered crest to the tailgate that day. He was absurdly attractive, but I found myself embarrassed by his flashiness that afternoon amidst the mud-speckled SUVs and lived-in Rainbows and red solo cups of my alma mater, and I was aware all at once that I had not been dating Javier so much as calculating the distance between he and Powell.

We were standing with some of my girlfriends, mixing mimosas, when I saw him. He had his forearm leaning against the open trunk of an SUV from which frat boys were retrieving plastic handles of liquor, and he was looking right at me. He waved once, a slow movement of the wrist, and did not smile. I saw immediately that there was no use in hiding and approached him. I was a riot behind a stone facade.

“Hi Powell,” I said, manicuring my tone with inconceivable restraint. He looked more mature, more serious — more handsome, as if he’d settled into his own features somehow — than I remembered. He was wearing a new leather belt, uncreased at the punch hole, and I could not help but project a fiction about Sumner selecting it at Eljo’s for him: her fanning around in a Lilly dress, and him looking on helpless and beholden.

“Howdy,” he said. A boy walked between us to hoist a flat of mixers out of the trunk. “Hey, Wallace, you seen George?” Powell asked him. I blanched. I saw immediately what he was doing: putting me in my place, embarrassing me with his disinterest. I turned on my heel.

“Caroline. Caroline.” I kept walking. “Hey, Caroline!” I spun around to confront him.

“You’re horrible,” I said, sifting through shades of dismay and thrill. It was bracing to verbalize a pale version of what I’d wanted to say to him for years. He lifted his eyebrows. “Treating me like that after — after –” And I couldn’t give a word to it. Because what had it been? Even after four years of laying the facts of our breakup in front of me, examining each like a specimen, I did not know. Was it a misshapen form of selflessness? Was it patronizing? Was it a feint to conceal a falling out of love? It did not compute that someone who walked back into the Harris Teeter in Barracks Shopping Center to pay for the bananas that had not been rung up in his groceries was capable of romantic chicanery. It also did not seem possible that he had fallen out of love with me all those years ago. No matter how many times I conjured his cutting words that morning in the garden, I thought mainly of the pained look on his face as he said them, and the way he always walked me to the door of his fraternity house — intolerant of the likelihood for shenanigans, projectiles, and errant comments that might waylay my progress — and his forbearance as my date at countless functions he had no interest in attending. I could see him at The Down Under, too gallant to wear his true feelings as he danced with me in the neon-dotted dark, and held my mixed drink for me, and posed with me in Party Pics, never wallflowering or sulking behind in the way I’d seen other boyfriends do. In a fit of rage against my heels on the long walk home, I had hurled them at the train tracks that ran along 14th Street.

“Good night y’all,” he’d said to the pack, summarily, and he retrieved my heels wordlessly and picked me up and threw me over his shoulder, as though a sack of potatoes, and I remember thinking how strange my size six heels looked in his hands, as though an astronaut holding a tube of lipstick in his gloved palm. The implied familiarity of this possession stirred something in me then, as it did when I stared at his hazel eyes that morning of the tailgate, ticking through these sundry nostalgias. Had there really been a time when he had fished my dropped earring out of his pocket (“you left this–“), and pushed my hair out of my face, and pulled me into himself by my waist as we jostled along the open flat bed of some fraternity brother’s truck? “I mean, you are horrible–” I repeated. I felt my voice catch and stopped short. He looked distraught, rearranging his lean build such that his shoulders — always thrown back — softened as he shoved his hands into his pockets.

Caroline,” he said again, this time each syllable shorter than the last, as if saying my name was an accelerating answer.

“Why were you so rude just now?” I gestured to the back of the car. He ran his hand down his neck and looked back at me.

“You overwhelmed me,” he said. I knit my brow as if to demand: “What the hell are you talking about?” Even still, I was taken by his fleet-footed reaction, by its uncomplicated earnestness. He shifted feet and took his baseball cap off and curled the brim in his hands. “Seeing you — it knocked the wind right out of me.” He couldn’t bring his eyes to meet mine. I felt a breeze turn in my favor.

“Sumner around?” I asked, unable to suppress this immaturity.

“Sumner?” He squinted in puzzlement, returning his hat to his head and situating it in a compulsive gesture of his I’d forgotten. Then he rolled his eyes in sudden apprehension. “I’ve never been with her. What you saw that day — that graduation day — was not what you thought. We were never together. I’ve been alone since you.” It was other-worldly to hear him speak like this to me. It took everything I had to shrug — actually shrug — my shoulders. We stood in silence. Then —

Caroline.” Almost an apology, now, his head at a tilt, and I had never known my name contained such multitudes. He rested his hand on my arm and squeezed gently three or four times, as if to soothe, and then moved his thumb across my bicep. I momentarily yielded to a possibility I had foreclosed upon for the past four years. The fracas around us seemed to blur and mute.

“I’m with someone,” I said finally. The thump of music and chatter of the crowd roared back. I withdrew my arm and gestured behind us. Powell closed his eyes, then nodded slowly, as if recovering from something. Though I knew I had delivered a passable performance of the revenge scene I had rehearsed hundreds of times — right down to the dismissive shrug and gratifying invocation of a new beau — I longed for the exchange to continue, or start over. I could not take him in quickly enough. His cheeks and forearms were browned from what I surmised were hours of recent fishing, and his Virginia cap was more deeply frayed and faded than I recalled, and I noticed for the first time his initials branded onto the leather of his belt — a gift from his tasteful mother? And as I absorbed these minutiae: this cannot be it, after all those years? Where I had expected the cool vault of satisfaction, I found instead an unbinding desire, and I struggled to accommodate this anagnorisis. Still, I felt myself begin to retreat, and this motion — though sanctioned, correct in my imaginings of our would-be path-crossing — ran obverse to every natural instinct in my body.

“Good seeing you, Caroline,” he said.

I was shaking, thrumming as though sick with sunburn, when I returned to my friends. The sight of Javier ran sour. I grabbed Charlotte’s hand, still aware of Powell’s eyes on me, and threaded my way through crowds and cars to McCormick Road.

I longed to retrace my steps, to find some excuse to cross his path, to feel his hands on me again. Would it do to just walk back down to that SUV? Charlotte and I exchanged meaningless observations on his appearance, the fact that he was even here, whether my Spanish boyfriend had noticed, as we absconded to the Engineering Library in search of restrooms. I stared at myself in the mirror —

“It knocked the wind out of me.”

His shy admission replayed over and over. It wasn’t just the sentiment: it was the apprehension of something primordial, as though Powell and I were nuncios, or pawns, or simply the improvised patterns of dust directed by forces greater than us both. Charlotte and I preened one another in front of the mirror, and, as we exited the bathroom, I grabbed her shoulder for a second and steadied myself. She understood from this wordless gesture that I was skating across a thin surface of indecision, and that any small shift in ballast might send me into pettiness, or tears, or some other form of scene-making I would later regret. Ill-advisedly but with the good intention of distraction, she retrieved a small silver flask from her purse, and we dipped into a window-lined nook of the library.

“To Powell Early Being Too Goddamn Late,” quipped Charlotte.

“I don’t want to, but I’ll drink to that,” he said. We wheeled around, and there he was.

It was inevitable after that. I knew it as soon as I saw him silhouetted against that empty library hall. Peripeteia, embodied. What will had he mustered to follow me there? Or had his pursuit been as inexorable as the tick of time from the clock that echoed in the dampness of Clark Hall that afternoon? I swear I could feel the day unwind in front of me in slow motion, one long scroll: Charlotte’s flustered and cartoonish extrication unfurling as if a tier of panels in a comic book, the way he pressed his palms against the wire frame of the stacks behind me, the afternoon transformed into a mid-tome spread across two pages.

I have been loving all of the punchy shades of orange, tangerine, and melon out this season! Below, some of my favorite warm-toned finds inspired by the many vibrant (and hopefully beachside) sunsets to come in the next few months.

P.P.P.S. What is the antonym of curiosity?

*Image above via Mija Mija.

Q: Snappy casual outfits.

A: I am loving the utility chic trend right now — it is casual but has a definite perspective, as seen on Mija above. (She is wearing Nili Lotan, but you can get the look for less with this Free People or this Pistola. I shared a little roundup of other inspired pieces here, including her minimalist-chic black sandals.) If that’s too edgy, I would go for some fun statement blouses to pair with your favorite jeans — I few I love at the moment:

THIS ULLA-INSPIRED NAVY TOP

THIS EMERSON FRY

THIS RUFFLE-COLLARED STRIPE

THIS TARGET STEAL

THE GORGEOUS CUSTOM-ORDER TOPS FROM PIETRA MADRID

THIS SEA TOP

Alternately, I like to “rough up” (?) staples like solid colored tops and striped tees by pairing with statement footwear, like hi-tops or spring sneakers (more great spring footwear here), and then layer with several pieces of everyday jewelry (think a couple of gold necklace with personal significance) on top to make it all look intentional.

Q: A large soft leather tote that will fit my laptop and then some.

A: Have you considered Cuyana (they also have a zippered version great for travel)? I still reach for this when I’m schlepping my work gear around (laptop, cords, notebooks, planner, etc.) because it’s sturdy, well-made, but not crazy expensive and so I don’t need to fret about it as much. For something a bit more upscale, Mansur Gavriel makes beautiful, unassuming, classic styles, and Clare Vivier offers pieces with a bit more funk to them. For a splurge, I swoon over the pieces from Metier. So elegant and distinctive.

Q: White sneakers that don’t get trashed in the rain. Are Golden Goose worth it?

A: Honestly, I was just telling a girlfriend that I can’t believe their staying power in my closet! I bought mine in maybe 2017 and there was a year or two they didn’t see much light but I’ve been wearing them constantly this winter/spring, and the sneaky thing is that since they’re made to look distressed, you literally cannot tell that they’ve aged or been worn all up and down Manhattan and Bethesda! I like this new pair with the pink stars on the side. I’m a firm believer in “wear what you love” and my pair still bring me joy and have held up wonderfully over time.

However, if you end up going with a different brand (I am also really loving my white pair from Madewell this spring) and don’t want the distressed look, I also swear by these sneaker cleaning wipes, which are specifically made to treat sneakers. They keep white sneaks looking fresh!

Q: Gift for a female friend throwing my baby sprinkle for me.

A: So sweet. A heartfelt hand-written note and a Julia Amory pareo or some beautiful embroidered cocktail napkins.

Q: Dress for my son’s Baptism in two weeks. Day event but needs to be a lil fancy and prefer sleeves.

A: Congratulations! I wrote a post on what to wear to a Baptism (plus how to dress baby, what to give as a guest, etc) here, but I think my top pick is this elegant style from Emily Hertz’s collection. Beautiful, form-fitting but not tight, sleeved, the perfect length! Just nails it all.

Q: Travel wallets and organizers.

A: I love Neely & Chloe’s style, and have heard it’s wonderfully designed for all your day-of travel needs from Nan Philip, who owns it and gives wonderfully detailed and forthright reviews. For more of a splurge, Smythson has a wonderful multi-zippered pouch that would be excellent for travel (you can get the look for much less with this very similar Royce style), and Anya Hindmarch has a clever clear crossbody situation that would keep everything you need (ID, boarding pass, glasses, etc) immediately at hand. But in general, I am a pouch lady through and through and can’t recommend them enough for travel days. I shared all my favorite pouches here — these clear Truffle pouches are heavy-duty and wonderful for TSA-approved liquids in particular. I have a few and use them constantly, but originally bought them when I was traveling twice a month for work and attempting to streamline my travel days.

Q: Spring jacket for NYC work trip. Not utility, so trench? What’s cute?

A: If you work in a creative field where fashion-forward is embraced, I am totally lusting after the statement patchwork ones from SEA. (You can see my DC friend and fellow creative Lauren Neff in one here — so, so chic.) I shared several similar patchwork/quilted coats to varying degrees of intensity in this post — J. Crew has one that nails a similar floral/quilted vibe with a bit more polish/structure that may be better suited for work though. If those styles feel too loud, J. Crew also has the same ladylike coat in pastels. I have also long loved these gorgeous capes from Marta Scarampi — so chic layered over some smart pants. Last but not least, I actually think a raincoat would be versatile, practical, and striking in this pretty green hue. And of course if none of those suit, a trench coat will never, ever go out of style. I like this one from Barbour, and Mango always has chic styles at great prices.

Q: Outdoor blankets for dinner guests when it gets chilly.

A: So thoughtful! People absolutely love Chappy Wrap throws for this purpose, and they have some really fun spring/summer patterns to choose from (love this sage trellis/bamboo print). They are machine wash and dry and I’ve heard they hold up beautifully, so you don’t need to fret if they get a little dirt or spill on them, or if you leave them out for dew to collect on. They also have a specific set of water-resistant blankets but those are really more for heavy-duty picnic/tailgate situations. (Still, not a horrible idea if you intend to more or less keep the blankets on a porch.) Alternately, I would go inexpensive with these Target throws (love them in all the colors, but especially the cheerful yellow and Serena-and-Lily-esque blue) — you can get five for around $100 and if one gets destroyed, you won’t have heartburn about it. Stow in a cute basket like this right by the door.

Q: Classic white button up.

A: I know many women who swear by Gap’s button-ups, and have heard the ultra-chic Caitlin Fisher wears them. For something more casual, I love Ralph Lauren’s white oxfords and the slightly boxy style from Ayr. For buttoned-up uber-traditional, you might consider J. McLaughlin, Boden, or Theory.

Q: Amelia Island wedding in April. Long floral dress under $300 – no pastels.

A: My first thought was this $248 Scotch and Soda — I love the fabulous flutter sleeves and bow at back — but not sure if that hue of melon reads as “pastel” to you? It feels so beachy-chic! Alternately, love (!) this loud and happy Farm Rio. Mille has some fabulous ones, depending on the level of formality requested — I love this in particular — and this $128 steal from Lost + Wander is currently in my cart. If the affair is dressier, Reformation is just the ticket (similar floor length style available here). This backless yellow floral also turned my head — so striking and beachy! Last but not least, this En Saison!

Q: Men’s bathing suits, not surfer style.

A: Mr. Magpie has several pairs from Vilbrequin that he loves — this is a European jetset style trunk with a shorter inseam than many American brands. Ralph Lauren has a pair that feel somewhat similar for much less and come in really good colors, too. It’s funny you asked this because I was also just eyeing this striped pair from European label Beach Club Apparel for him, and I also love this lemon-print style from OAS.

Q: Bathing suits!

A: I think about half of my Magpie readers will be stunning beaches and poolsides across the nation with the exact swimsuit I bought for myself this summer: Maygel Coronel’s Rosa style in white. But there are SO many fantastic swimsuits out this season. People rave about Hunza G (and the “inspired-by” style at Aerie, which the internet is OBSESSED with) and many of you have written to extol the virtues of this flattering Tory Burch style. I am also a longtime fan of Solid and Stripe’s Anne Marie style — it is SO flattering on. I own in a few patterns. For on-trend prints, you might consider Agua Bendita, Johanna Ortiz, or more affordable label Capittana (so fun!). And then of course there’s Marysia! I own a few of their suits already, but have been eyeing the Antibes and Mexico styles all the same. You can get the look for less with this style from Mango or snag one of the final Marysias on clearance here. Finally, for budget swim, H&M always has great styles — love this one and this one.

*Image above via H&M featuring their Staud-reminiscent maxi skirt in punchy apricot. This would be adorable paired with a patterned blouse like this or with a white poplin top tucked in.

Goodie goodie — new finds from Target and H&M! My top pick is this striped maxi. I cannot decide between the stripe and the blue floral — both are so cute! — but think I will order the stripe to pair with canvas espadrilles.

P.S. Chic finds under $100.

P.P.S. “But the thing worth doing well done // has a shape that satisfies, clean and evident.” More on this sentiment (and how to find joyful items for your own home) here.

P.P.P.S. Bedroom refresh.

I love nights when the candles burn low, leaving constellations of wax on the table,

And there is no urgency around clearing plates and washing dishes.

I love the fullness of that moment when you put your napkin at the side of your plate,

And curl up on your chair with a still-full glass of wine,

Asking for nothing but conversation.

The main act is over, but you sit in warm, still communion with friends.

A dear girlfriend of mine nodded emphatically when I mentioned this sensation years ago:

“Yes! Fare la scarpetta,” she said, which in Italian means “make the little shoe,” and in practice refers to the act of taking a small crust of bread to mop up the last of the sauce on your plate.

Leave it to the Italians to immortalize the feeling in idiom.

I hadn’t thought on this for years and then, over the weekend, I sat with Mr. Magpie on the floor of our living room lingering over a spread of oysters, shrimp he’d sous-vide-d in olive oil, olive bread from Bread Furst and outrageously expensive but delicious Isigny St. Mere butter, lemon-dill hummus, peppers and green onions he’d blistered on the grill and then dressed in olive oil and garlic, and muhammara. We don’t normally eat this way in our home; Mr. Magpie prefers a well-rounded plate with a protein, starch, and vegetable lovingly prepared and arranged in beautiful concert with one another. This night was different, and we sat there for hours, unwilling to clear the plates. The words occurred to me as I floated up the stairs a bit later: fare la scarpetta. The most literal, pin-prick specific way to capture the feeling of enjoying time spent together to its very ends.

I’m carrying that sentiment with me this week. I want to turn everything off and enjoy the things that bring me pleasure until there is only the faintest ring of coffee left around the basin of the mug, until I’ve drawn the last of the bread through the last of the sauce, until the loving conversation ebbs and evaporates into the silence of sleep.

To making the little shoe!

+This is yet another stab at remaining present.

+We were more or less enjoying an indoor picnic. And I love an indoor picnic.

+Are you an adventurous eater?

+Much of today’s essay also plucks on themes from my essay on remaining open to joy.

+I especially enjoy evenings lingering over dinner al fresco. The season is nigh!

+You can subscribe to receive an email alert when my posts go live at 5 a.m. each morning here. I know many of you do this and read Magpie bright and early, in your beds. Thank you for inviting me into your daily routine. I have recently added a little shopping section to these posts where I switch up the finds weekly. Just a little glow up for my morning magpies.

+My favorite Vitamin C product is 25% off right now with code SPRING25. I wrote more about it here.

+Love this French straw bag with the Hermes-orange handles.

+A propos of the above: Mr. Magpie always shucks our oysters at home using one of these gloves — it’s a MUST — and I just ordered him one of these shallow galvanized metal trays to serve them up in. We’ve been making do serving them on cookie sheets but this will be more civilized.

+Obsessed with Anthropologie’s selection of Lucie de Moyencourt pottery — especially this enormous dish (imagine piled high with citrus on your counter!) and these canape plates. Would be cute to buy one of these and place a little parcel of cheese straws on top and wrap the whole thing in cellophane as a hostess gift.

+This dress make me want to enjoy a margarita. (With the spicy rim — IYKYK — in my favorite glass for rocks drinks.)

+More of my favorite glassware/drinkware here.

+I’m telling you, terry is enjoying a moment right now. (Terry’s publicist must be v happy with herself — HA.) It is all over the place! I love the terry pieces I bought from Minnow for my son (top and shorts — you can get the look for less with this and this from Dillard’s), and then just picked up this J. Crew terry romper for my daughter, too! For adults: Kule has a bunch of terry pieces out this season, including this little romper situation which has been selling like wildfire.

+When I bought that coverup/romper for mini, I also bought a few other adorable things at great sale prices: this nightgown, this t-shirt and a long-sleeved variation (we have these in several colors, but the colors on sale are around $10 so I tossed a few in the bag), and this rash guard (not as heavily discounted but high sell-out risk and I love it).

+I adore everything about this dress. I own a number of Saloni dresses and the fit and tailoring of this brand’s pieces are always exceptional — impeccable!

+WOW these sophisticated sandals are only $119 but remind me of a much more expensive pair by The Row. They feel right at home with these minimalist chic pieces.

+I know we’re inching out of cold weather, but these inexpensive thermals for littles are incredible — my children wear them as loungewear in the winter but we also layer them beneath snowsuits, which, it bears noting, are on rare sale at Reima, and Reima is SUCH a good brand. Incredibly made pieces. I bought mini a jacket from here that she’s worn the last few weeks and it really is impermeable.

+I am hearing good things about these Spanx pants. SO many of you love and swear by their other styles and I like this new trend-forward style.

+This beach tote!!! And this dress!! YES! I know I’ve shared this before, but I bought one of the embroidered caftans from this brand two years ago and I LOVE to wear it at home, barefoot, all summer long. Like the perfect evening outfit: slip into it post-work and enjoy a glass of wine.

+Seriously eyeing this linen mini for a rehearsal dinner for my sister — the floral reminds me of Monet! But I also love that playful butterfly print…would be cute for my 12 year (!?) anniversary this summer.

+I am transfixed by this stripe dress from LR. It is SO unique. Love.

+Ordering these $10 jammies for micro.

+Pucci vibes.

+Gasp – this skirt is beyond gorgeous. More beautiful skirts for spring here.

+Debating between buying micro a pair of Sperry boat shoes for the season (starting with Easter Sunday) or buying this $20 pair of loafers in the next size up. Both are great because the top velcros down into place…

+This Baby Gap outfit is beyond adorable. It’s reminiscent in some ways of the Doen dress I just treated myself to!

*A recklessly happy mini in her summer uniform: Lacoste polo + CPC kids shorts.

As an accompaniment to yesterday’s post — spring shorts for children! This has been the major area of buying for me lately. I recently bought a few pairs from Minnow (some terry and some canvas), a pair from Smockingbird x Julia Amory, and am about to buy some of these from Oso and Me after I was so impressed with the quality of my previous order from them. I almost always pair micro’s shorts with Lacoste polos but I also love the Henry tees from Busy Bees (run on the large size IMO — love the buttons on the shoulder and the quality cannot be beat!) and picked up a few of these pocket tees from J. Crew because the colors were extraordinary. I also wanted to mention that I bought micro a terry polo from Minnow and shortly after discovered these ones from Dillard’s which look very similar and are considerably less expensive. Just added one of those to my cart, along with the matching shorts. Going to be a terry cloth summer! While at Dillard’s, I found these adorable swim trunks! Added those to my cart, too!

Spring Shorts for Girls.

I’ve written about this a lot, but my absolute favorite brand of shorts for mini is CPC. They are pricey but durable and I flat out love the style — a short length and semi-slim-but-not-too-slim fit. Totally classic and adorable. I find so many of the other traditional brands have these enormous balloon-y shorts? That said, J. Crew has a new style out this season that I LOVE — I bought her these in the lilac gingham. I’m also eyeing these in a few solid colors for good everyday camp shorts to pair with Lacoste polos and tees — she has a few of these heart pocket ones from J. Crew and I will be ordering her a few of these from Cat + Jack, which are inexpensive but sweet (also available in toddler sizes — mini had those last year and has now upgraded to big girl sizes!). Last but not least, this adorable shorts set has been in my cart since the moment it was released. I think it has to be mini’s!

P.P.P.S. Things that feel like answers.

A week ago, I fished my backpack out of my closet. It’s seen much less use since living Manhattan, where going anywhere with two young children required two free hands. Here, in Bethesda, the margins are wider: spaces tend to be less crowded, street-crossing is less common, and there just seems to be less confronting us as immediate peril. When I unzipped it, I found a stash of diapers, and micro is now toilet-trained; socks he’s since outgrown; and a half-eaten packet of pretzels, used no doubt as a distraction while in some restaurant or on some stroller ride. I held the diapers in my hand in disbelief, as though confronting the remains at Pompeii. The last time I packed that bag, I had no idea it would be the final time I’d pack it with a diaper. Any parent who has survived toilet training knows that moving to life without diapers is difficult and immensely rewarding and so why would I give half of a sentimental thought to the before stage? I don’t know, but I felt something catch in my throat. I write about this, and write about this, and write about this, and still I circle the drain: how can time steal from me in this way? I feel sometimes as though he is slipping through my fingers. He is not, I know: he is here, everyday, chirping and tumbling and wailing and exclaiming. I hold him and read to him and scold him and know his every last preference. Lately, he has eschewed the lullabies I have sung him since he was an infant, “Edelweiss” from Sound of Music and “O Little Town of Bethlehem,” instead telling me: “No no no no — Woody song,” by which he means “You’ve Got a Friend in Me,” which is a surprisingly difficult tune to carry. But I do it, and every now and then, I have to compose myself mid-refrain: “But none of them will ever love you // The way I do // It’s me and you, boy.” I know even now this song will one day be a vestige of his youth, just like the diapers in the backpack and the half-eaten packet of pretzels (at one time, his preferred snack). It is jarring, though, how quickly these relics disappear beneath the rush of the everyday. You might be puttering around unassumingly one Tuesday night, packing backpacks and lunchboxes, and then you unzip a pouch and find the now-forgotten selection of rocks your daughter insisted on carrying around for months on end, and you find yourself knee-deep in an emotional archaeology.

I have no answers for this. There are no salves, no remittances. I think one of the tremendous burdens of motherhood is letting go of the firsts and lasts, but still, onward we go —

+The internet is going crazy over this Hunza-G inspired one-piece (under $50 — the O.G. is $205). I mentioned this recently, but my sister raves about Hunza G. She wore it while pregnant and will wear post partem too!

+I have this sage green button-front pullover in a soft terry material I bought from Old Navy like five years ago that I am obsessed with. I wear it constantly. I wish they’d bring it back because it’s my favorite lightweight layering piece for pairing with Aligns, jeans, etc when I am running errands and the like. Anyway, I found this popover that is VERY similar and am inclined to buy it as a back-up/alternative to this piece because I wear it SO MUCH. Specifically in the sage green for some reason. Looks great with light-wash denim, white, and any manner of spandex colors.

+Speaking of Lulu, I love this new running windbreaker and the new colors of their running shorts!

+People LOVE these Lulu-inspired leggings, BTW. Have not yet tried!

+This dress could not be any more “me” if it tried.

+Pearls and rattan — yes and yes.

+LOVE these boldly colored lacquered trays.

+FULLY in love with these planters. OMG. Beyond.

+OOO this striped dress, YES.

+These monogrammed, patterned mini stools are beyond adorable for a nursery, where there are always a million and ten needs for a stool — little ones turning off the lights, reaching books, looking out the window, etc! More finds for children’s rooms here.

+Saw this dress and immediately imagined wearing it on the FOJ.

+Glitter jellies! OMG – who else had these?! More adorable footwear for littles here.

+Love a tunic top and this one comes in the best misty shade of blue.

+Pretty decorative woven bowl.

+Just head over heels for these gingham mules.

+Chic dress — would wear to a backyard BBQ.

+Excuse me but this $28 sweater gives me major La Ligne vibes…love both colors!

Men’s Shorts.

I know many of us shop for our men — thought I’d share a few pieces Mr. Magpie already owns and a few pieces I just ordered this past week for his spring wardrobe, too. He especially likes these casual weekend ones, which come in several great colors (and prints) and can be paired with a polo (<<these iconic Lacoste polos are currently on sale! I just bought them in navy and white for Mr. Magpie; I bought two others on sale in pink and blue here, and inside tip: if you have an AMEX card, you can currently add an offer to your card to get $20 back on every $100 spent at Bloomie’s, so these were technically even MORE discounted) or tee for farmer’s market, playground, etc. I prefer the shorter inseam — the look is throwback in the best way. I also bought him this striped tee (seen below) and these slightly dressier shorts in the isle of pine color (not seen below). For uber-casual, Patagonia’s Baggies are the best — they work in water, while gardening, at beach, as a stand-in for athletic shorts, etc. Finally: I just ordered Mr. Magpie these Sperry boat shoes in the fun tan color with the bright accent colors — fun for summer, and on sale for under $40?!

My Latest Snags: Parterre Dress.

On the heels of writing a post about great everyday dresses “to live in,” I discovered Parterre’s Day Gown and had to have it in the evocative green color. Just gorgeous! (Would work while pregnant!) It comes with a sash, which is not pictured on the site, but an absolute must for me to afford some shape. I feel like I will be wearing this dress all spring and summer long and love the unique print and shape. I ended up ordering a plain pair of Vibi canvas flats and also these raffia mules and feel both will be the perfect complement to the dress while puttering around the house and chasing the children.

Weekend Musings: Happy in Small Ways.

Edith Wharton wrote: “Be interested in big things and happy in small ways.” That’s it, isn’t it? Maintaining a sense of perspective and awe and curiosity when it comes to the Big Stuff, and yet finding joy in the middle, in the slenderest of details?

I’ve been unwell with a bad bug this week and Mr. Magpie has capably held down the fort in my absence. I can’t remember the last time I slept from 7 PM until 7 AM — not even with COVID, which had me pretty badly down and out — and yet I needed that rest and Mr. Magpie gave it to me. One of the mornings, I listened to him run the A.M. routine like an absolute pro, and strained to hear to the footfall and chatter of the three people I love best in the world float out the door and down the back steps to the garage, on their way to school. A few minutes later, Mr. Magpie texted me the following picture and added: “Pic taken at 8:08 a.m.” Which is shorthand for — he had them dressed, fed, brushed, and out the door well before we normally do (around 8:11, 8:12 is typical) — and he was deservedly proud of this accomplishment. But what struck me most was the fact that he’d taken the time to tie my daughter’s hair and put a bow in it, and had even brushed my son’s hair (and I normally just let him go out as he is, since he squirms and shrieks when I wield the brush). This little gesture of care made me glow with love and the joy of being cared for, and having your loved ones look after, too. Happy in small ways, yes.

P.S. I’m reminded now of an earlier essay I wrote in which I suggested that maybe happiness is not a continuous state of being but rather little gems to be found and treasured throughout the day: “These are the little moments of glee, of near-reckless happiness, glimmering sequin-like throughout the drag and pull of everyday parenting and adulting which — let me be honest — has felt particularly leaden-footed these past few weeks…Now that I think about it, is it possible to experience a full day of happiness? A full afternoon? Or does happiness always exist like this: in startling sips?”

+Cute and inexpensive coveralls for a little boy.

I have gotten so many requests from expecting moms looking for chic maternity wear. It feels like a different lifetime that I was waiting for my son to arrive — and yet, pictures like the one above draw me right back to those tender-hearted, impatient moments of waiting. During my pregnancies, I tried wherever possible to buy non-maternity so I could re-wear post-baby, and I also tended to invest heavily in statement footwear and accessories to “dress up” and have fun with the staples in my closet (I had one black dress similar to this I probably wore 200 times but would diversify the look with accessories). Like, why NOT go for those wild, trendy Chanel sandals and just wear them all summer long to give your look a bit of edge? I must also say I splurged on maternity pajamas (these were my favorites and I had several pairs I since gave to my sister — they also work great postpartum/nursing) and maternity underwear — they made those uncomfortable months just a tad more comfortable! Below, some favorite maternity-friendly finds…
