X Marks the Spot

By: Jen Shoop

I recently stumbled upon these eye-catching map prints of Paris, London, and The Big Apple ($55/pop, MadeByGirl), and was completely obsessed with the idea of buying a  few and hanging them together, in a cluster, in a rather unadorned corner of the apartment.  {Mr. Magpie and I have an all-or-nothing policy when it comes to wall art — either fill the space with goodies, or leave it bare.  Nothing sadder than a miniscule print lost in the middle of a huge expanse of white wallpaper.}

I haven’t been able to get them off my mind since, so it looks like I’ll be doing some negotiating with Mr. Magpie this weekend.  {I’m going to guess that he won’t be a huge fan of these graphic colors cluttering our walls.}  They reminded me of these darling city-specific totes I found a few weeks back (the ones pictures below are the “beach tote,” but they have a range of styles, shapes, etc — $37, MapTote):

These cheerful little canvas totes led me to daydreaming about my upcoming trip to San Francisco (!!!!), for which I plan to pack BRIGHT colors {even though I’m told that the look there is much, much more dressed-down than the East Coast…any tips?!} — like these phenomenally kitschy Karen Walker Deep Freeze sunnies (Karen Walker’s shades are where.its.at right now — I’ve seen the tortoise shell version of these shades all over the place! — $180, Gargyle), or these bold Kate Spade flats (love the neon against the subdued oatmeal linen — $198, Kate Spade), or these punchy Virginia Johnson scarves (in.love — $195, Virginia Johnson):

Any of the above would look killer with a crisp white shirtdress, or white skinnies and a basic tee.  In.love.  Tuck all your goodies (including this neon passport cover — Smythson, $120, Net-A-Porter; an Archie Grand travel notebook — $10, Amazon; and  day-glo polish — the pink Essie “Pink Parka” hue is my uber-chic little sister’s absolute favorite — $4.50, Amazon, and the geranium red is one of my personal favorites — $3.95, Amazon) into one of those maptotes:

For daytime, I’m all about POP of color tops (love the funkiness of this turtle print topper — on sale for $136, Virginia Johnson) paired with white skinnies and t-straps ($58, Need Supply):

The outfit would look lovely finished with a burnished gold/silver/opal-esque statement necklace, and I am in.love. with these Alexis Bittar styles ($495, Alexis Bittar), which look almost like oysters:

Finish with a casual day clutch — I was drawn to this sunny yellow envelope style by Halston Heritage (on sale for $459, MyTheresa) — and those Karen Walker tortoise shell shades mentioned earlier ($180, Shopbop):

For evenings out, I simply must.have. a floaty white/cream maxi dress for the season (the one below is $195, Calypso — but I’m REALLY coveting this Rachel Pally number in cream…TDF), which I’d pair with bold turquoise accents ($69, Pret-A-Beaute)

I’d finish with some bold espadrilles — and we have LOTS of choices this season!  Consider these darling (and affordable) Dolce Vita puppies ($125, Amazon):

Or a pair of DVF colors (in just the right colors — $255, Nordstrom):

For the label-lusters, these Lanvins might be up your alley ($595, Net-A-Porter), although these TopShops give them a good run for their money ($135, TopShop):

Any and all of the above would be gorgeous finished with a cork clutch ($150, Elaine Turner):

And as an aside, a dress like the one above could easily be dressed-down for daytime jaunts — just swap out the wedges for some sandals (I love these sparklers, which I found in one of the shops — 100% Capri — in the Taigan online shopping conglomerate), and I might finish with a bold neon-accented straw tote (Marc by Marc Jacobs, $178, Shopbop):

Happy travels — ooh la la!
