What Are Your Fall Swaps?

By: Jen Shoop

Earlier this month, I asked: “What are you most looking forward to this fall?” and one of you responded: “Making the switch back from my iced latte to a hot latte.” I love this Magpie’s celebration of a simple swap to accommodate the season. I’ve written countless times about this, but Mother Nature is a live model for accepting change with grace: she reminds us even in the turn of seasons that we must let go of certain comforts to accept the joys of the new.

What else are we trading in as we approach autumn?

+Airy cotton for wool and cashmere

+The comforting whir of a fan for the crackle of the hearth

+The stretch of loose summer schedules for the structure of the school year

+The slow swell of heat for the acute nip of cold

+”No one puts baby in the corner” for “Don’t you love New York in the fall? It makes me want to buy school supplies”

+The round give of ripe fruit for the unctuousness of jam

+Polishing salt scrubs and exfoliants for nourishing moisturizers

+A Carly Fortune July for an Anne of Avonlea October

+Bare feet for heavy socks

+Citrus and salt for warm spice

+The lush for the sparing and precise

What are your other favorite fall swaps?

Post-Scripts.

+Two vibey autumnal playlists from Spotify: Vintage Fall Jazz and Listening to the Rain in a Cabin in the Woods. I love the specificity of the latter! What art!

+I started to read our Magpie Book Club pick for October this week — it is captivating, and I find the writer’s style comforting in a way I can’t put my finger on. What has been your favorite novel from the Magpie Book Club series? I am still not over Trespasses. What a masterpiece! I was just reflecting on that book yesterday, thinking: “What a time to be alive, while geniuses like Louise Kennedy are releasing perfect books like this?!” I almost can’t believe that novel just came out. It has the shape of a classic.

+The softest kinds of love.

Shopping Break.

+25% off orders over $200+ as a part of Tory Burch’s fall event, meaning our favorite suede crossbody is now under $200. Other items to contemplate adding to cart: this elegant satin shirtdress, this colorblocked fleece, their bestselling poplin skirt (so many ways to style –!), and their Hank sneakers.

+Per my note above, a few ways to style the full skirt for fall:

LEFT: MAXINE SHIRT (ON SUPER SALE) // MONCLER JACKET (LOOK FOR LESS HERE) // SKIRT // MANSUR GAVRIEL BAG (LOOK FOR LESS HERE) // A SOLIANI FLATS // AURATE RINGS (USE CODE BDAY)

RIGHT: CASHMERE TEE (ON SUPER SALE FOR $129) // SKIRT // BEADED NECKLACE // WOOL-SILK SCARF // MINI BAG // FLATS (LOOK FOR LESS HERE)

+25% off that SEA cape trench that we’ve all been obsessing over here! While you’re there, scoop up this perfect fall wool-silk scarf. I love the way these scarves look layered over light knits and tees with jeans!

+Oo! Alex Mill’s fall collection is gorgeous. I’m swooning over this polka dot skirt (pair with a chunky knit or navy blazer!) and this cashmere sweater jacket.

+Also loving the sherpa trim on this quilted jacket. Perfect for layering over athleisure. BTW, the two leggings I keep reaching for this season: these ultra-soft (almost like brushed cotton) leggings from Varley in the espresso brown and these Rhone leggings. DO NOT SLEEP ON RHONE. I am telling you, not enough people are talking about Rhone athletics for women. I find the fits are absolutely perfect. I hate to say it, but it’s what Alo wishes it were in terms of fit and function. Everything just wears beautifully and works so well — plus they have cute little encouraging mantras on the interior lining of the clothes! My code SHOOP20 gets you 20% off everything at Rhone.

+A look for less for the Varley leggings!

+Fun pop of color for fall!

+Speaking of fall swaps: I mentioned on Instagram that I’d recently restocked this shampoo/conditioner (such a gorgeous lather and scent) “for my fall haircare” and someone asked what else I change during this season. Mainly, I retire my salt scalp scrub and layer in a lot more of this hair mask (the smell is DIVINE), but I also do like to switch up shampoos seasonally. I don’t know if this is true or not but someone once told me your hair eventually “gets used to” the products you’re using and they stop being as effective? Not sure, but I do like to mark the seasons by switching up products and I like that I then associate the season with a new shampoo scent. Very excited to reintroduce Roz after a summer of Guerlain!

+Current favorite fall moisturizers: this inexpensive barrier cream, St. Jane’s Phyto Mucin, and InnBeauty’s Extreme Cream (a great “dupe” for Augustinus Bader, which is 20% off here in case you’re a devotee!).

+You can get my beloved Dyson Airwrap for 20% off here!!! I continue to be obsessed with this tool. Review here.

+Love the laces on these Sambas.

+We have a few fall gatherings coming up and I just restocked our supply of St. Agrestis “phony negronis” — this has become my favorite non-alcoholic mocktail. They really nail the body and bite of a cocktail better than any other brand I’ve tried. (I used code FALL2025 for 10% off.). Try this custom mix pack option so you can try a few different flavors but avoid any you aren’t fond of. I like white, limone, and classic. Landon and I garnish ours with both a lemon and orange peel.

+I mentioned this a few weeks ago, but I can’t wait for Landon’s Life Builder belt to arrive from Smathers + Branson. I had SUCH a good time picking all the custom iconography from Landon’s life. I just know he’ll treasure it. Two of my favorites: the airedale to commemorate our sweet Tilly girl, and a Maryland flag, which I personally think is one of the coolest state flags! I also think these monogrammed valet trays, these needlepoint hats, these fox and hound coasters, and this Thanksgiving koozie are fun gifts for a dude!

+My favorite cashmere turtleneck. It is soooo lightweight and soft and perfect. Great for tucking into wide leg pants and full skirts — keeps the upper silhouette slim.
