Weekend Vibes, Edition No. 151: Shiseido Facial Cotton + Short Stories.

By: Jen Shoop

My Latest Snag: Shiseido Facial Cotton.

If you’ve been reading this blog for awhile, you will know that I have long been a devotee of Shiseido’s facial cotton and have used it for some time now, but I just reordered and thought I’d mention it here in case you’d missed my earlier posts about it. IT IS AMAZING! So much softer and gentler on skin, and much thicker and more absorbent, too. A small but noticeable upgrade to your skincare routine. I use it to remove makeup with Bioderma micellar water.

More of my favorite beauty products.

#Turbothot: What Are Your Favorite Short Stories?

I have been laid up in bed, sick as a dog (I caught what Emory had), for the last two days and I have been more or less incapable of a full thought during that time, so I thought I’d cast out for some input: what are your favorite short stories? I love the form of short fiction — it puts pressure on writers to give shape to something in such a compressed amount of space — and I enjoy the experience of reading something to completion in one sitting. I’d like to read more of it. What do you think of the medium? What are your favorites?

  1. Oooh, co-signing You Think It, I’ll Say It (Sittenfeld) and nearly anything by Lorrie Moore, especially Self Help, Like Life, and Anagrams! I did not love her Birds of America as much, though.

I also have Grand Union (Zadie Smith), about which I’ve heard mixed things, but I love her novels so much that I bought this short story collection to try. Will keep you posted about how I like it!

Also, it’s not fiction, but Jia Tolentino’s Trick Mirror — a collection of essays that I LOVED.

    xx

  2. Anagrams by Lorrie Moore is a must-read for short stories! She takes the same characters and reinvents them over and over in different lives and scenarios.

Also love anything by Fitzgerald or James Salter in this genre.

  3. I love short stories!! I read a lot (A LOT) and find that I crave shorter form after a few long novels. Here are few collections I have loved in the past year or so. Most feature one or several that you can find published online in the likes of The New Yorker, etc (another great source for short fiction!)
-The Largesse of the Sea Maiden, Denis Johnson
-Come West and See, Maxim Loskutoff (I read this a year ago and still think about it all! the! time!)
-Everything I Know About Love, Dolly Alderton
-Impossible Owls, Brian Phillips (one of my favorites of last year)
-Grand Union, Zadie Smith (my favorite writer!)
    -Florida, Lauren Groff
-You Think It, I’ll Say It, Curtis Sittenfeld
-Joan Didion! Esp. loved the White Album.

I hope you are beginning to feel better!!!! xx

  4. So sorry you’ve been sick! Ugh!!!
I am too tired to “read” (or my eyes are too heavy) when I’m sick, so I usually audio a book as I rest. It’s a great way to relax and take your mind off of things. Hope you feel better soon.

Heard this was good when you’re sick :

  5. I used to say I was a die-hard novel reader and short stories didn’t interest me much. Curtis Sittenfeld’s You Think It, I’ll Say It totally changed my mind! I read it last summer and delighted it. Her style is apparently not for everyone, but I’m a huge fan of her short fiction. Also a collection of delightful short essays—musings on motherhood, perfectionism, friendships and other matters—is I Miss You When I Blink by Mary Laura Philpott.

    1. Thanks for both of these suggestions! Had heard of both but don’t think I’d had anyone personally vouch for them. Adding to the list…xxx
