Random Notes on a Monday Morning: Hostess Gifts, Baby Gates, + Dresses.

By: Jen Shoop

+I have been receiving a lot of inquiries about hostess gifts lately, which just lifts my spirits as I am imagining many happy reunions and resumptions of traditions. A few favorite hostess gifts…

CUSTOM NOTEPAD

+Don’t forget the chic gift enclosures!

+On the subject of gifts, just ordered this sweet cross for an upcoming Baptism. This shop also does gorgeous custom/personalized crosses.

+And while on the subject of Church, this magnet set was a total lifesaver for me with mini between the ages of 2-3 back when I went to Church in person! We still have not resumed. Planning on doing so after we move!

+We will need baby gates in our new home. Micro is…startled and obsessed by the discovery of stairs in his new home. Isn’t it funny to think that a little two-year-old has not had many daily chances to climb stairs?! (We live in an apartment with an elevator!). I am looking seriously at one of these elegant wood styles that sort of blends in with the woodwork near our stairs: love this and this. I had also had this in mind, but then realized it doesn’t “screw into” the wall and so can totally imagine Hill knocking it over/bypassing it. But I LOVE the look! Would be good for dogs!

+Another rather niche gift for a scrapbooker! So lovely.

+Have also received a number of inquiries about tennis/golf gear for little ladies, and just came across this under-$15 polo dress that could be an option over these kick shorts, which are my absolute favorite for layering under ALL of mini’s dresses. More tennis/sport options for littles (and mamas) here.

+My girlfriend Inslee is just so talented. That is all.

+I really need to get back into the habit of this post-work buffer. I have been all over the place the last few weeks!

+A few new dresses I’m loving:

THIS ZARA

THIS DRESS WAS SO, SO POPULAR OVER THE PAST FEW DAYS ON LE BLOG…PERFECT FOR BACK TO WORK

THIS FLORAL SUNDRESS IS SO, SO PRETTY

SEVERAL OF YOU ORDERED THIS MINI AND I…WANT IT TOO IMMEDIATELY

CUTE MATERNITY-TO-POST-PARTUM DRESS

FUN (!) WEDDING GUEST DRESS

+15 special occasion dresses under $230.

+Just ordered two new products from Saie, which I’ve been eying forever: this raved-about mascara and this dewy primer.

+Um, this bag is so chic?! Reminds me of the Hermes Evelyne in shape!

+Truly adore these pima cotton collared dresses on mini. We have a few of the Nantucket Kids styles and they just launder so incredibly well — they come straight out of the dryer looking pressed/ironed, I swear!

+Again, random things, but we had to buy a new washer/dryer for our new home. Mr. Magpie did so much research (no really, so much research…he boiled it down to a few specific models and was actually circling the differences to compare/contrast and asking intense questions about how often I clean my sportswear, as apparently some of the models have specific settings for performance fabrics!) and it seems like most of the top-recommended models are LG. This is the exact model we ended up with.

+These woven loafers are just the chicest.

+These totes in the largest size are just the BEST things ever for car travel with littles. I tuck all their stuff in their and then wedge them underneath their carseats and it’s SO handy to have an open-top, wide-mouthed tote with pockets lining the interior (!) to get literally anything you need while in transit.

+I get the vibe that this outdoorsy brand is THE gift for people who actually do things outside, like hike, camp, etc. These shorts would be a good gift for an outdoorsy sis! Kinda want them for myself…

+Speaking of athletic gear, have my eye on a few new items at Lululemon: this Align tank in new colors, these streamlined shorts, and this tank.

+While packing for our trip this past weekend, I belatedly realized that Mr. Magpie needs some new swim trunks. He has these Vilbrequins in white, which I am SO obsessed with him. He pairs them with a white or black Lacoste polo and looks like a million bucks. Somehow he is always tan? I don’t understand. A few other cool pairs:

THESE FROM SOLID & STRIPED

THIS CORAL PAIR

THESE RLS COME IN GREAT SOLID COLORS

+ICYMI: The most popular items on le blog this year.

+If you don’t have children, you may have missed this post, which has some interesting little details in the post-scripts.

What’s going on with you?

P.S. Another recent smattering of thoughts.

P.P.S. A woman who cuts her hair is about to change her life.

P.P.P.S. I miss my friend.

  1. We have this crystal gate (wall mounted, so extra safe for stairs) and it is so easy to use, functional, and attractive. It also made our install super easy — as we have baseboards, and for many other gates would have had to buy extra accessories. It may provide a good options for that C&B one you were eyeing, but with added safety!

  2. I highly recommend a pressure-mounted gate if you need it because it won’t damage the walls/banisters. But if you can get away with it, I would leave them off completely. We used gates when our babies were crawling to avoid an accidentally head-first trip down the stairs, but as soon as they are old enough to navigate stairs, we remove them because the gate almost makes the stairs a more attractive play area (especially with my boys who viewed it as a climbing jungle gym). It’s a painful couple weeks but they learn quickly when they aren’t supposed to be going up and down the stairs.

    1. Good point! Interesting — we never removed all of our decor/objects from the living room area and were instead consistent with setting boundaries and we’ve never had anything broken, even fragile items. Still, having just spent the weekend in a home with tons of stairs, I am concerned about my adventurous two year old…will have to think on this…

      xx
