In one of the greatest compliments of my life, my brother-in-law once said that I dress myself “like a present.” I knew what he meant, too: ever the Magpie, I am always drawn to bows, ribbons, jewels, add-ons, details, dramatic proportions, embellishments. If I were a present, I’d be wrapped to the high heavens with a wide, white satin bow. Below, a few Magpie-like pieces I love…
THIS JEWELED BUTTON MOCKNECK SWEATER ($120)
BIG BOW EARRINGS ($125!) — ALSO LOVE THE PEARL
WOULD LOOK AMAZING WITH THIS SCALLOPED, BOW-BACKED TOP
THIS AMAZING DUSTY BLUE COAT WITH JEWELED BUTTONS
PINK EMBELLISHED COLLAR SWEATER
ZANOTTI FLATS (ON SALE – PERFECT HOLIDAY SHOE)
STAUD BOW TOP (PAIR WITH HIGH-WAISTED TROUSERS OR SKIRT)
THIS $20 H&M STEAL (I LOVE THE GRAY WITH THE TINY PEARL CLUSTERS ALL OVER)
THIS SHIRT WITH ITS CRYSTAL BOW BELT IS BANANAS
DRAMATIC NECKLACE TO LIVEN UP YOUR TRUSTY OLD LBD
FUN SEQUINED HEADBAND (UNDER $15)
AND JUST BECAUSE A GIRL CAN DREAM…THIS OSCAR DRESS IS PERFECT
P.S. One of my favorite luxury hand soap brands, on serious sale.
P.P.S. Avoiding a denim rut.
P.P.P.S. Moving to revisit this piece when we were still so early into the pandemic.
Oh what a lovely compliment, Jen! I can totally see why, too — you have inspired me to go beyond the “basics” in my wardrobe. I had mistakenly thought before that as a petite woman, some of these details can be overwhelming on someone with 5’0″. But it can be done! I still stick to one type of embellishment or detail at a time, per my comfort level, but it’s been fun to experiment!
On a related note, this reminds me of my mother’s philosophy of using the “good china” and the “good silver” for everyday — well, at least after my brothers and I were old enough to treat them responsibly at the table. I admire the way she would have proper place settings with matching linens etc so that every meal feels like a celebration, as we gather around the table in gratitude. No time like the present, as cliche as that may sound.
I love that!! Definitely in you mother’s camp. Use the good stuff!!!
